That old temperance movement picture is enough to drive any man to drink 😖🥃
I'd say
Im howling, the perfect comment
@@ArizonaGhostriders is fire water a real nick name for Whiskey in the old west? I understand that's what the Native Americans called it
@@eliotreader8220 Yes, and it actually IS credited with native american culture.
I dig how much fun you’re having with making these. Truly contagious:) Many thanks for the grins.
Our pleasure!
One of the most popular drinks in the Old West was Basil Hayden Kentucky Bourbon. It started in 1796 and was favored by George Washington shortly before his death in 1799. During the 19th century it was the most popular bourbon whiskey and remained so until probition in 1920. After the recall of the dry bone law, and probition it regained some of it's popularity and remains today as a venerated bourbon of today and yesteryear.
I've had it. definitely not a bad one, but not one of my favorites.
I think the actress who said,”That’s the good stuff” is Linda Hunt who stars as Henrietta Lange on NCIS Los Angeles. I didn’t realize that she’s been acting that long. I really enjoy her character on that show.
It is.
Old Forester is one of my favorites, especially the Rye. Another great video Santee.
Thanks 👍
i love the old west saloon scenes in movies,i just love how a person bellies up to the bar and orders a whole bottle of whiskey, a mug of beer and a shot glass
I I have heard that the term "a shot of whiskey" came from the practice of trading a small glass of whiskey for a revolver cartridge if the drinker was short of cash. True?
Untrue. The term "shot" came long before the cartridge era, and cartridges were a lot cheaper than a serving of whiskey.
I heard that also
@@ArizonaGhostriders Where did the term come from then?
@@debbiekerr3989 In 15th century England a. "Shot" was a "charge to be paid", and was recorded as a phrase when talking about whiskey drinks at a tavern.

In Nevada there's a little whistle stop east of Reno called "Pizen Switch" that once hosted a frontier-era bar.
Personally, my favorite firewater is 151 proof British Naval Rum. It lives up to its nickname and tastes naturally of burnt sugar.
Put a flintlock on the side, tie that wild rag around your head, and we can go reenacting like pirates!
A few neat shots of naval rum will have you saying "aarrrggh!"
Aaarrgh!
Well Santee, I'd have to say this video was your best. Very well played out. Good job!!
Thanks, Bob!
Fun fact: Tarantula juice was actually developed into its own drink later on. It was mostly made with whiskey, but had a few dollops of poison to give it a deadly tang.
They were risky back then, it appears.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Indeed. The poison was supposed to make your stomach tickle like there were spiders crawling in ya.
I used to have a horse named Whiskey. I miss him so much.
Sorry to hear of his passing.

My mom love Johnny Walker whiskey!! Whiskey is a great name for a horse!!😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍🥃🥃
It's a better name than Pinot Grigio. That's a horrible name for a horse.
Arizona Ghostriders I agree!😊😊😊
Ah yeah aint nothin like an AGR logo resting on a wood cask at44 to brighten youalls day. Liken it smooth!! Well done again...
Old Grandad used to be my favorite. Sometimes I would mix it with 7-UP..oh that was some good stuff..Mmm Mmm. Can’t forget about a good cigar to go with it but I gave all that up years ago.
I've tried Old Grandad. Can't remember it...
Only time santee has a problem with whisky is when the bottle is empty
Correct!
@@ArizonaGhostriders get you some jim beam honey. They make it down the trail about 60 miles from me. It'll put a grin in your face steel wool won't rub off lol
Cowboy Kent led me here and I like this channel, a lot! Lindsey, Lindsey, Lindsey oh dear oh dear whisky/whiskey drinking is never a problem unless like Santee and me you only have one mouth. There is much debate where it originally came from Ireland or Scotland iam always drunk by the end of debate so don’t know the answer but the Gaelic name is “uisce beatha” it means water of life! Just like wd40 whiskey fixes most things and it tastes better!
I grew up near where the “pilgrim fathers” came from and theres a pub called the “the pilgrim fathers” so given the evidence booze is clearly the way forward, my advice is to start on Irish, them move to scotch then that stuff you have in US and before long you’ll soon be on the brake fluid, turps and those wipes that come with 1st aid kits.
Another great vid AGR! much respect from the the UK
Thank you Lee!! Much appreciated. Got it: Irish, Scotch, Bourbon, Brake Fluid. IN that order!
Thanks for the heart means a lot! Especially to an old soak 😂 . I think whenever booze and history are combined it proves to be great, especially when your watching history drinking booze, probably why history was garbage at school! That old rubbish about about the folks from Europe coming over and shooting kings in the eye with arrows and wrong uns going round smashing up machinery you know them there Luddites.
Perhaps if teacher took out a bottle of “teachers” (thats cheap scotch here in the uk tastes marginally better than than stuff they put in chemical toilets) history might have been stacks more interesting.
It’s important to know where you came from to know where you going and.........it took lots of whiskey drinking to realise that!
We have so so much history here in the uk we take it for granted so the lesson is drink more whiskey! No no no sorry 😐 i mean pay heed to history for fecks sake!
I almost wish you did a newer follow up on this. There's got to be some more stories, anecdotes and fun fact about the fire water that you could tell.
Oh I will. Don't you worry.
@@ArizonaGhostriders I'll second that. I'd love for you to get into the questions of distribution, bottles vs. casks, the innovation of "bottled in bond" sales, and even the differences in town drinking (where drinking straight whiskey was frowned upon and folks more commonly drank cocktails like the "Stone Fence" or, you guessed it, the "Old-Fashioned") and frontier drinking (where straight whiskey was more tolerated if not outright celebrated).
Strike that request for the cocktail notes! I just saw your "Mixed Drinks" video! ruclips.net/video/K5zuWUXOVUg/видео.html
Everytime I see that Temperance Pic I think I know why them fellers drank so much-we'd have gone Extinct otherwise.

Aaaah, the great Klaus Kinsky. "Il Loco", even in real life.
Yeah, he was not very well liked, apparently.
Jack Daniels may not have old in its actual name, but does just below it. Check the label -- "old time whiskey," "old no. 7." It did back then and it still does now.

Old Overholt makes a decent "mock Irish Coffee". I just found this one

What's Rex like when he is drunk? Also I love whiskey and beer. If I ever had to pick an alcoholic beverage I would pick whiskey hands down.
Why is the rum always gone?
Johnny Depp drinks it.
Evan Williams BLack label bushmills still the oldest operating to this day :D
Interesting.
Hey Santee. For "hollywood booze", what do you guys use to make faux whiskey and faux beer (and I assume rum)? Does it depend on avilability or down to the colour you're trying to get? Like, I assume tea for whiskey, and same (with darker food colouring, for rum?) Or does it tend more towards things like unalcoholic cider. Much like grape juice as a stand-in for wine?
Addendum.
Is Sassparilla the TV-code pre-spagetti-western friendly stand-in for Whiskey?
I mentioned it in the recent movie video I did. Tea is good for whiskey and ginger ale for beer. Others have used thinned out coffee and soda, but drinking those are pretty nasty.
Thanks for telling me if the really gambled in saloons in the old west! But one question still baffles me...were duels in the old west really called showdowns and what were they really like?
They were not. That was a Hollywood thing.
Drinking some High West Double Rye and watching this
Cool! Like it?
@@ArizonaGhostriders Indeed
Right now I am sipping Jack Daniels in a small glass that originally contained Dijon mustard and was imported from France. On the glass are pictures of Bart Simpson and his pal Milhous. It's a licensed Simpsons product with the Simpsons logo. The world is so confusing.
Hey, whatever works. The important thing is you are getting the whiskey in your system!
@@ArizonaGhostriders That is so true! Now here's a song that addresses that very condition:

Fun fact: I heard of a rumor... that when they implemented prohibition, the end result was people becoming more drunk and alcoholic. XD haha! When they finally got rid of it we slowly went through the process of becoming less drunk over time.
Old Crow was Mark Twain's favorite Bourbon.

Good episode. Word of advice. Never drink scotch and eat nachos cheese Doritos. They really don't play well together in your stomach. Also Chocolate Ice Cream and Tequila seem to have friction between them too....
Good to know thanks! Ha!
Have you ever heard the phrase 1/4 Whiskey? Basically bar whiskey that was good but only about 45 proof.
No! Interesting.
Acording to some stories. Some towns rules about guns in town limits.had to do with drunk cowboys accidentally shooting there horses.then leaving them were they lay.which cost business or the town to remove.
I'm not sure that was a common thing. Especially when the horse was such an important tool for the cowboy.
Tried a brand Texas Fire with chilli juice...Haaaaaaaaaarrrrr!!!
YES
When I was a lil kid after watching so many western shows on T.V. I use to pretend I was a cowboy taking a shot of whiskey!! I used pickle juice...... WOOOOO WEEEE... that`s powerful stuff mister!! Kept a straight face to,,,, like a real cowboy man drinking WHISKEY!
Wow, you were a tough li'l kid!
Do I have a drinking problem...? It's only a problem when I run out.

Opening scene in the saloon. Now that's funny.
Buford tannen’s Kentucky red eye he busted after his horse threw a shoe
So in remote places, did they make monthly, weekly deliveries?
Pretty sure they did. There were freighters around who made that part of their weekly routine.
I don't quite understand the cgi t rex in these vids but I don't mind it

Rye rye whiskey rye whiskey i cry if I don't get rye whiskey i surely will die

Good ol jack danials but moonshine will work

So what were the prices of whiskey across the Wild West?
They varied. No way to really tell. Mining towns charged more because they could.
I make my own cough syrup. The base of which is yup, whiskey. It works. Although you need to add a few more things but I will never buy so called cough syrup again. It tastes horrible. If interested, its a old Appalachian recipe.

Was making homemade whiskey legal out west in the late 1800s? And did they have a whiskey culture like the one in the Appalachian mountains during the prohibition era?

Actually, the Bible doesn’t say that we shouldn’t drink but rather that we shouldn’t get drunk. Paul told Timothy to take a little wine for his stomach’s sake. The temperance movement sought to prohibit rather than to moderate, thus, it failed. Yay!
Well ok! LOL
I have a question what did you do in the western frontier against snake bites. I once heard the doctors in the western were one of the best doctors they also use knowledge from the native Indies and later also from the Chinese. Stop bleeding with hot irons.
