It also then provides potential quest opportunities around the finding and rationing of your mistletoe. Your players have to make some tough decisions when their food and healing supply overlap so heavily.

Some things to consider, you’re not always sitting on spell slots at the end of the day. If they day was balanced properly, it should have been taxing on your spell slots and you should be out or close to it, so at best you can do this before your first day of adventuring and then to a minor extent with any leftover slots during the adventure.
Also, if you use all your spell slots before going to bed, you better have a really good scout or be in a safe location (tiny hut) because otherwise a nighttime attack with no spell slots is going to go poorly for you.

    • @filipmarkowski2473
      @filipmarkowski2473 2 года назад +1

If you're above 5th lvl you can dump those leftover 1st lvl spellslots. Your cantrips do good amount of dmg at this moment, sometimes can even outrun spells. Do not use all of your leftower spellslots on goodberries b4 long rest in a middle of nowhere (those couple 1st lvl spellslots can be "wasted" but i would not use my higher lvl spellslots on it if i have any). Some dms consider fighting as an activity that ends your long rest (you can do only light activities during lr) so you can be left with no spell slots after such encounter. That's why it's always good to have someone short rest dependent (like warlock), cuz you can just wake him up and let him kill those 2 goblins (they are not a threat in a way of killing you, but in a way of making your next adventuring day harder if your dm considers fighting as a "failing long rest"). Ofc, if something with cr hing enough to kill someone comes, you better fight it with everything you have, even on a cost of "failing" a long rest.
With that said, there is a way to dump all your spellslots into goodberries safely. If you know that next day you're going for a dungeon crawl, you can use all of your spellslots while you stay in a save inn.

I have nerfed goodberry in 2 ways. First is that it consumes a sprig of mistletoe as a material cost. Second is that goodberries provide enough food for half rationing and the nourishment does not stack. Half rationing in my game means that you eat only the minimum to sustain your body at any given day, which means if you half ration a long rest, you do not gain any of your hit dice back since you are not gaining enough nourishment to effectively grow reserves. I do this not even for the survival aspect but because I love food in games and I always have my characters learn how to cook properly in every game I am. This goes so far that I have a space wilf space marine who knows how to cook properly in a homebrew GURPS game.

As for getting "enough" nourishment, it is beyond vague on what "enough" is therefore it is simply enough no matter how much or how little nourishment you actually need with no downsides, as in if you pop a goodberry waking up for the day so you don't have to eat then pop more after a battle you only get "enough" nourishment that you would have lost inbetween eating the berries

Pack tactics talking about "enough" nourishment like Willy Wonka telling Charlie he lost the contest.
    Content below: GM tips
GoodBerry is so weird to work with RAW as a Gm. Having the world able to use it can potentially make alot of jobs, characters, and situations completely invalid. Due to being restricted too nature casters. Good Berry can help sustain a frontier town, with hunting game more of a nessesity to keep nature balanced. In a gameplay sense spending all your slots on goodberries before you rest is an easy way to be magically unprepared in an ambush. Even more so if the bandits know goodberry is common in that area, and or an enemy knows they consistently do this.
That's all I can think of now, if you plan to keep goodberry unchanged. I hope this helps alot. Thank you for reading my comment.

Since this video just dropped I’ll reiterate my point about disciple of life. While you can argue for the synergy between disciple of life and goodberry, it seems against the spirit of the spell as well as breaking it. In addition, goodberry is a transmutation spell, essentially growing a bunch of magic berries out of a sprig of mistletoe. Three spells tagged as healing are transmutation school, the other two are directly used on the pc you want to effect whereas goodberry is applied to a secondary item then consumed. As a DM you have a strong case against stacking that buff.
As an additional note: imagine if goodberry was the main reagent in health potions, just watered down and preserved via the alchemical process, and if you want to punish your players for using it a lot ( not saying you should) make them addictive… can’t get enough of those tasty magic berries, if you stop you get withdrawal symptoms. Another proposed nerf for the spell in survival settings is to say that the component is used up while casting... so instead of looking for food, you're looking for mistletoe sprigs... but I think I like yours more.
Also, to prevent the druid from walking around with 130 free Goodberries, I only one instance of this spell be in effect (like Familiars, you cast it again, the first set lose their power). That way, you can go to bed with 10 free berries, but not 130.

If the spell lasted 24hrs and could be dispelled I might be inclined to think disciple of life should work with it because the berries properties were an active spell effect, but goodberry is instantanious, meaning once the berries are created they are no longer affected by a spell, and they are not themselves spell effects.
Think about it like this: if you use wish to create a healing potion, and you have disciple of life, that healing potion still follows the rules for a healing potion, because it's a potion and not a spell.

Good Berry saved our party multiple times. I was playing druid and would use all remaining spell slots at the end of each day to cast good berry. We also had a ranger do the same. We would then split the berries amongst the part. If someone went down anyone could get them up by giving them a berry. On average each play was carrying 4 good berries. This saved us from TPK multiple times. I disagree about using them in combat, as hating someone up as opposed to unconscious makes a masive difference.

for survival campaigns sometimes they ban the spell outright, they could also just remove the nourishment part like you suggested.
another popular option is making the material component of the spell (mistletoe) a consumable component then meaning you would need to find a mistletoe in order to cast good berry, i think this option was suggested by Zee Bashew (the guy that makes animated spell book videos)
Though that option does have a downside that it basically takes good berry out of commission until your dm decides to give you a mistletoe from my experience in my current game.
though we've been discussing ways to more reliably get a hold of mistletoes, such as getting a fort of refugees to start growing mistletoe's and training in the druidic way so that they can feed their fellow refugees

The alchemist add+int to healing/acid/fire/necrotic/poison rolls.
Later levels they add +2d6+int temp hp to all heal spells. According to dndbeyond, temp healing counts as healing so the initial +int to healing stacks (according to the coding of the website).
I used tattoo infusions to cast goodberry.
At lvl 11, my alchemist artificer was healing 1+5(int mod) + 2d6+10 (int mod x2) temporary hp per goodberry.
I also used tattoo infusions to cast find familiar.
    Every turn was:
standard action= potion, or goodberry, or cure wounds

Alchemical Savant only works on cast, not on use, AND it says the bonus is added to a roll of the spell which never happens with goodberry. At best you would only get the healing bonus when you conjure 10 berries. RAW you should get zero bonus.
"Whenever you cast a spell using your alchemist's supplies as the spellcasting focus, you gain a bonus to one roll of the spell. "
Restorative Reagents wouldn't work at all with the spell.

Its not like the feature changes how the spell is used or makes it viable for in-combat
Its like, oh man. Hes got berries that heal 4 HP with an action. Considering how many Berries you get from a Rest, all Disc of Life does is make it take less time to heal out of combat.
Taking a few turns instead of a minute to heal back up doesn't usually matter. So If they want to take a cleric level to make them have better out of combat healing, I'm fine with that

Funnily and sadly enough, it works by RaW. Look at how the feature is worded.
"Whenever you **use** a spell of 1st level or higher to restore hit points to a creature, the creature regains additional hit points equal to 2 + the spell’s level."
Compare it to the level 6 life domain feature:
"When you **cast** a spell of 1st level or higher that restores hit points to a creature other than you, you regain hit points equal to 2 + the spell’s level."
Difference being **use** and **cast**. I am definitely not casting Goodberry for the 1st level feature, but I am most certainly using a spell. Consuming a pre-cast Goodberry does count as using a spell.
I mean, I myself hate it and Goodberry juggling, but sadly it really does work.

"you can expend one spell slot to deal radiant damage to the target, in addition to the *weapon’s* damage."
So looking at it hard RAW, if there is no weapon to add on the radiant damage to, divine smite would deal 0 radiant damage when you punch. I don't like that it's ruled this way, but that's RAW for ya.

As a druid, I don't like to Goodberry juggle because I have to ask myself, "Is this healthy for the game? I'm I power gaming and abusing this spell?" Even if it's RAW, I have to consider this. You could use good berries at its maximum potiental. A long rest is 8 hours, so after spending all your spell slots on good berries, it's possible you may have a lot left over for the next adventuring day to use. And if multi-classed as a life cleric, a single spell slot may equal to 30-40 worth of out of combat healing, totaling around 300-400 non-combat healing if you had 10 spend slots before a long rest. And you may still have good berries from the other day.
It's a problem because it makes traps and consequences that involve taking damage out of combat irrelevant. And worst of all, it's basically FREE! If it inflicts nasty conditions where it hinders a character's ability checks and fighting capabilities sure. I highly recommend introducing Goodberry juggling to your DM first before doing it outta nowhere in-game.
EDIT: I do Juggle Goodberries, but not to such extremes.

So I know you did a video on the gloomstalker. Could you do one on the new drakewarden at some point?

I don't ban goodberry, I just make it consume it's material component. I think it actually adds to the survival challenge. Now you want to find as much mistletoe as you can because of it's utility. It forces you to act rather than be comfortable, without detracting from the spells strength.

Side note thay elves can get 2 long rests in 8 hours if you already used all your spell slots or you can judt double the amount of berry's

Thank you for making this and even more so for NOT making it about taking a Life Cleric dip!

Hey kobold what's your opinion on Shadow blade?

On the enough one can assume that goodberry being a spell just know how many calories you need, even when the number is close to 0 because you just ate one.
Otherwise it wouldn't make any sense since a big goliath and a small gnome would need a very different amount of calories. If we assume goodberry knows once then at the second berry it just know that you just have to replenish the calories needed to eat a berry

Kobold, what's your opinion on Animate Dead? And what's the mathematical sweet spot on undead controlled vs spell slots used?

Another way to nerf Goodberry for survival campaigns is something I came across when watching an Animated Spellbook video: Consume the component on-cast. Every time you cast Goodberry, your material component (a sprig of mistletoe) is consumed, thus resulting in the need to roll Survival checks in order to forage for more. Since the material component is consumed, the cost can no longer be replaced by, let's say, a Druidic Focus. If the DM thinks the party's becoming too reliant on Goodberry, he can simply increase the scarcity of mistletoe in the area, thus resulting in higher Survival rolls needed.
