    This story actually really reminds me of Rigoberta Menchu, a K'iche' Mayan activist. She had a biography written about her by an American anthropologist and she told really intense stories about the Guatemalan civil war that, some of which when fact checked, didn't actually happen to her. However, in her specific community (not saying all Maya but rather the Maya village she grew up in), stories are passed down orally and traditionally told as if they happened to the speaker. So she got blasted by American media for lying, when in fact she was conveying the emotion her community had gone through as if it had happened to her. She said, "I'd like to stress that it's not only *my* life, it's also the testimony of my people." With the media coverage, there was very little room for empathy or understanding of the cultural difference, and that has always stuck with me - American media would rather focus on inaccuracies than the actual bigger problems. When I ask why that is and look into it, I find it almost always comes down to money and where it's going.

    • @emotionally_invested
      @emotionally_invested 7 месяцев назад +79

      So interesting that you brought this up! Rigoberta Menchú told such an important story for her people, but was widely discredited in the US because of “factual inaccuracies.” But her story was rooted in the Latin American tradition of testimonio which is loosely translated as testimony, but that translation really does not encompass all of the nuances of the story telling tradition. It really is very similar to the idea that a joke is funnier if it happened to me. (I can’t remember exactly, but I feel like Reservoir Dogs and Seinfeld both have bits about this??) I would have never have thought to link these ideas. Also does not feel like a coincidence that in both of these cases a white person is bringing down a brown person for using their platform to represent their people. Sorry if this doesn’t make sense. I am drunk and very passionate about this lol.

    As someone who's been watching Hasan Minhaj since he premiered on the Daily Show, I was already side-eyeing the New Yorker article when it came out, and didn't even bother to click on it until Minhaj released his response video. Perhaps the most infuriating thing to me was that in the New Yorker article, the girl who rejected Hasan Minhaj in high school said that she was "invited" to his comedy show and felt terrible afterwards, claiming that she was invited only to be humiliated by Minhaj. But in Minhaj's video, he says that the woman BOUGHT TICKETS HERSELF and went to his show on her own will... If Minhaj is telling the truth here, it is absolutely PATHETIC that this woman would cry victim to the New Yorker in an attempt to bring him down a peg. This article just confirmed to me that America hates seeing brown people succeed.

    The whole article just feels odd to read and incredibly biased. It feels like they wanted to portray Hasan as a someone who is capitalising on people's sympathy and paint him out to be a bad person. Like the stories he tells in his standup are legitimate experience that brown people go through and he's using his platform to highlight those problems and issues. Writing a bad faith article like that just enables more racist rhetoric and painting brown people in a bad light. Its so nice to see someone cover this because as an Indian it's very difficult to see famous brown figures in the west get crucified like this. Can't have another mindy kaling problem.

      Some youtubers may be posting about this situation on their personal social medias like Twitter/X or Instagram.
      Some other goutubers may not want to talk about it in video because they want to produce feel good content and leave the news and informed opinions to people who are much more informed about those kinds of situations.
      I say this generally, because there are a lot if people talking about this tragedy already as well, so maybe the youtubers you're referring to are avoiding it as to avoid over-saturation of such a large topic.
      Even with that said, I believe a simple 'one and done' post about the side they are on with a quaint, mild explaination if even that, would suffice. But again, i point directly to my previous paragraph.

When i learned that the controversy was that hasan exaggerated some of his stories in his comedic standups, i then lost interest and i alredy suspected that the person who interviewed him was a white person. When i saw hasan's response video, that just further confirmed that the person who intervirwed him was a white person - and i didnt even read the article yet or know who interviewed him - with how there was so much emphasis on implicitly disbelieving hasan's encounters with racism, the police, the fbi, and islamophobia.

Even if Hasan did cut out an email in which he initially invited her to his show, at the very least interviewing them both at once could’ve pushed the truth out, but her ALLEGED account was treated like a CCV recording. I refused to watch any video criticizing Hassan based on the article until he responded and then I read the article again. Clearly they had already planned the direction of the article and what's worse is that the writer implied that because he took creative liberties in terms of his stand ups that people shouldn't trust his journalism either. She didn't even bother publishing his full refutation on that line of thinking! Also many comedians exagerate or fabricate situations as comedy is a creative career. Hasan did embellish certain parts of his standup but it tackled specific issues that the community faced in the US, so he didn't make crap up in order to claim and racism/Islamaphobia , he exagerrated and embellished to highlight the realities of these people's lives, which unfortunately include racism and Islamaphobia. Your comments on Palestine is appreciated, you have a new subscriber :)

    a bit late to this video but very grateful you made it, saji! hasan’s work has always been so inspiring and important to me as someone at the intersection of 2 ethnicities. seeing him use his platform to support education on sociopolitical issues has always been so special, and even the commentary in his specials has clear impact! reading that article and watching his video made me viscerally mad and just so disheartened. lately i’m finding myself truly question so much about how i consume information. i’m glad you’ve used your space to discuss it this way, and provided some resources! can’t wait for the next one

    yeah i never seem to understand why white liberals (maybe conservatives) love describing us like we are rare legendary exotic pokemon. all you have to do is say we are brown or south asian, you don't need to do all that wumbojumbo "they are curry baljeet 7/11 mothu and patlu *insert every south asian stereotype here* indian descent." do they even describe other white people like this in their journalism?

    Man, I don’t subscribe to this morality at all. Comedians embellish stories all the time, to heighten the emotional response. Sometimes they tell the story of someone they know as if it happened to them because putting themselves in the center of the story makes it easier for the audience to relate. And sometimes they make up stories completely because it illustrates a point or conveys a feeling. Comedy is art and artists use lies to expose truths.
    If Hasan had lived a perfectly privileged life and never experienced racism in any form, but he got up on stage and told a story about a guy being racist to him, that’s not a lie, it’s a performance, and if he were telling a story that illustrates a common experience for people who look like him, then there is truth in that performance.

    I don't know, it still feels really fucking gross to lie about genuinely fearing his daughter was a victim of an anthrax attack. That's disgusting, and is so much farther beyond embellishing a story for comedic effect. Where's the joke there? As for the FBI informant, again, what was the joke supposed to be? He was literally just making shit up to gain sympathy and advance his career, not embellishing a story to make it funnier.
    The prom story is the only point where I think he was treated unfairly by the article.
