  • @dvmavgoor

    I'd first start the engine and seat heating and then would go scraping ice from windows. This way you'd get a warm seat right from the beginning of the actual ride and the engine gets extra 5-10 minutes of a softer warm-up cycle, w/o load from driving. Some oldies say that this way the engine lives a somewhat longer life, but who knows :)

    • @maximilianschober4240
      @maximilianschober4240 2 года назад +11

      Don’t do that. Engines are not made for heating up while standing

    • @dvmavgoor
      @dvmavgoor 2 года назад +5

      @@maximilianschober4240 That's true, a modern diesel engine won't build up any significant temperature while idling. Moreover, long idling on an under-heated engine leads to excessive amount of soot, acids and even water that dilutes oil. However, a moderate standing warm-up (~1-5 mins) lets the engine build up oil pressure properly, not to say about the gearbox. Any oil in -20C is not as liquid as water, so it takes time to lower its viscosity in order to properly lubricate all the needed things. That's why in such cold conditions, having no auxiliary heater, I prefer to let the engine idle at least 2 minutes before driving. That seems to me as a fair balance between the harm of driving the unlubricated engine and harm from under-heated engine idling.

    • @Mr0supra0
      @Mr0supra0 2 года назад +3

      @@dvmavgoor That is still not the correct way to do it. Oil pressure is there right from the get go, there is no reason to wait for it. Regarding the oil argument, all you do with standing with the idle warm up is to run the engine for a longer period of time under non optimal oil conditions. Get it, start the car, wait a few seconds and take of. That way you will achieve a suitable working temperature and oil state quicker. 2 Minutes idle doesn't do much to the oil in those conditions, it barely heats up, and you go about your day. Meaning every time you drive your car, you drive it about 2 minutes longer under non optimal conditions then neccessary.

    • @dvmavgoor
      @dvmavgoor 2 года назад +5

      @@Mr0supra0 I don't want to play a smart-ass here, this is not the right platform. But normally it takes only one good old oil leak from engine's rear seal to realize that your oil in -20C is not that liquid, in -30C it's even more like butter. It of course depends on the climate you live in, no doubts, in mine (winter is -25C for 3 months) it's almost inevitable to have your seals leaking during cold starts. Every 2-3 years you have to pay money to replace crankshaft seals, and this job is pretty expensive. People noticed, that having a car warmed up a little bit before driving reduces the chance of leaks. Pre-heating the engine with a block or auxiliary heater reduces the chance almost to 0. And the reason for that is oil viscosity, not that seals are of bad quality. The oil pressure sensor has also downsides: it's located in the main oil galley which is huge and builds up pressure fast. But smaller oil channels that are clogged with "jelled" oil are not immediately pressurized. This oil jelly barely squeezes through thin channels and hardly lubricates any bearing. This is one of the major factors of excessive engine wear-out in cold climates such as in Russia. Most modern petrol engines in cold climates by the time they hit 200.000km have almost totally destroyed bearings, crankshafts and oil pumps if they were not pre-heated. Diesels are more robust due to their nature, but not un-destroyable either.

    When driving longer journeys in winter so that the engine and the transmission warm up properly, the consumption goes down to normal summer time figures of 4.something litres / 100 km (in 4 cylinder RWD). The trick is, the lower winter time speed limits (at least over here on the Finnish side of The Gulf) compensate for the higher rolling resistance of winter tyres on snowy road.
    Kudos to MB212, please keep the videos rolling. Thumbs up!

    Heya. E550 driver here. I read about the driver icy front window "bug" in a big german forum, that it may help if you put down the car sun visor, so that the warm air can circulate longer between the visor and the windshield.
    I would be really interested if you could test that out for us 😃 👍

    • @MB212G
      @MB212G  2 года назад +1

      Interesting I definitely going to test it out later on 👍

    • @Hannu9999
      @Hannu9999 2 года назад

      I would not consider the sun visor an issue, as in such conditions one needs to wear sun glasses anyway. However, it is true that at least in pre-facelift W212, the Thermatic fails to take full load of 4 - 5 people in cold temperatures into account correctly. Even if I pre-heat the car before starting, the wind screen starts to freeze gradually from the top corners in cold weather. One can compensate this by manual settings (more fan speed, more air on the screen and close the center air vents) but it means the configuration of the Thermatic automatic heating is a bit off for cooler temperatures well below -20 or so.

    Man, Your engine doens't get to operating temperatures, I think you will be better suited with a gasoline engine, then a diesel. Unless your temostat is not working properly.

    • @Hannu9999
      @Hannu9999 2 года назад

      It's even worse with 4-cylinder diesel in the same car. I have got thermostatically controlled air flow shutters in my W212, but since unlike in the newer W213, they are only after the cooler, I usually block the lower air vent when changing to winter tyres. When the winter starts for real, then I block also the upper air vent (almost) completely, leave just a thin open gap between the lowest slates of the traditional Mercedes grille behind the extra LED-panel.
