@Opiates&Tits yes it's actually a diesel, i mean there's winter diesel which can handle cold temperatures a little better but still diesel can flocculate at -40°C
W212 did OK here. I was commuting to work in Siberia at -40..-30 C. A piece of cardboard or other insulation helps in front of radiator, otherwise the stream just blows heat out of the compartment. Full synth oil is a must for cold starts, look at 0W and check freeze point in specs. After start I left idling for 5-10 min, then checked steering, brakes and shifted transmission from N to D several times. All fluids flow - ok to move. The heater needs to be in circulate mode if it's on high vent setting, outside air is just too cold to heat up this fast. I've been changing steering and brake fluids before every winter. Had a piece of insulation fastened on hood cover, too. Insulation helps building up heat under the hood, coolant flows and heater keeps working.
Wow, the northern lights / aurora borealis! That was an unexpected bonus at the end of the video. Awesome performance from the W212. We have a W212 E400 but the enemy we have here is heat & humidity, not icy cold temperatures. Great video!
I think I definetly would NOT turn off my engine at around -30.. -40°C. Fuel lines might freeze if the fuel flow stops for too long. It already has problems keeping cooling water temperature, so I would just let it running. You can put your transmission box into manual and try to keep at least 2k engine rpm. At around 1k and light throttle it produces almost no heat but at around 2k it should make sufficient amount of heat. Sports mode as someone stated isn't necessarry, but manual might be useful. Anyways, thank you very very much for this video. Its really interesting to see this perspective of the world. greetings from germany! :)
They use different kind of diesel in arctic winter conditions which does not freeze so easily. Also additional mask in front of the engine is recommended so that the crankcase Vent Hose does not freeze (happened to me couple of times,it blows oil out of the engine through the oil cap). Also electric engine block pre-heater is must. Due to law it's forbidden to run engine for more than 4 minutes (2 minutes in summer) if you don't drive (atleast in finland).
Had a W212T, half-facelift (2011-2012), 265HP 4Matic with air suspension and full options. Absolutely amazing car, never left me in doubt when it came to reliability. Consumption was a bit on the high side, but the car was so relaxing to drive I can forgive it for that.

To keep cars warm during the trip in -40C in Siberia we use glass-wool blankets in the engine bay and stick a piece of a cardboard in front of the radiator to protect it from winds. However, these measures do help only a little, and only if the engine is "hot" enough to sustain its temperature while running (smaller engines like 1.0L 3cyl will be underheated no matter what you invent.)
In my old 2002 a6 v6 gas, I use nothing. 10mins idle in -40c in cold Canadian morning and it is at full heat. Transmission fluid gets warmed by the antifreeze. So as soon as coolant is at 90c, transmission is usually also at least 30. Oil takes a bit longer to get to 80, but in 10 mins idle, it definitely is above freezing. I never put cardboards or anything. I drove for 1500kms at night in -42c on the hwy doing 110-120kph and I kept the heat set to 21.5C, because if I'd put it on high, I'd die of heat.
On my way to toronto from calgary in 2022 january, i encountered -42C weather. I parked my old 2002 audi a6 3.0 v6 gas powered car at the hotel's parkade and went to sleep. German cars are very strong. I wouldn't be surrpised even if it started at -60. I've seen TDIs diesels start at -41. It is all about what oil you use, the antifreeze you use, and how much cold your battery can withstand. Most modenr batteries 2009- to now are tested to run good until -55. Even newer batteries and oils are being tested until -70 degrees Celsius. The engineers definitely know that there are people living in these conditions.

Midac Sigillum CA-Hybrid Battery and 92C Mahle Termostat. Also, you have to blick off radiator with Fabrivk and Cardboard. On my w211 E200D (2008) I keep revs at 2000rpm. -36C the no issues.
With W212 and newer using webasto heater below -25C seems to mitgate stuff good. But... Isolating radiator is needed At -35c or lower. Kits for this are available...
I share the same observation of W212 automatic heating issue with the freezing windscreen even though I have never seen colder than -32 degrees in my car. It needs manual settings in cold weather. It's kind of exciting to drive in such weather knowing that the fuel in the tank is no longer liquid below -29 (living a bit further south on the Finnish side), but it starts forming chrystals in the cold weather. In practice, it is still possible to drive the car below that, but it's always interesting as one never know how far exactly below the rated temperature of the fuel one can go. OTOH, if a diesel starts at all, then it will keep running, as the return flow back to fuel tank heats the remaining fuel that is not used (yet).

It's better to turn heat to front window right after you started the cold engine in order it to not get cracked because of hot air hit and too fast temperature change. When engine is not heated, window gets cold air at first and is slowly warming up with engine.

Yess I actually use the auxiliary heater from time to time and especially when is this cold, but for video I wanted to drive with the normal settings. I think the fluid I use this time was for -25 when adding 1/1 water, and this I only used concentrated.
lovely filming. I miss cold winter. we have about -7 at the most here. but I learn in the army tha when it is wery cold, cover up most of the radiator. then it is easyer for the engine to get up to 90 c. I have an 211 320 cdi and drove in -19 and the engine temp. was 92 c with no cover over the radiator. but that is far from - 40 c.
Do you have cover on the mask/grill. I usually cover the lower front opening at least. So the intercooler is not going to freeze. At those temperatures I would cover the whole front. It just warms up so much faster than way. It's been quite cold here -20. But today it dropped to -8.

Agreed with the engine temp, it's run cold in winter time. I covered the cooler in mine MB, but it did not help much. Thinking about changing the thermostat to a 103 degrees, but then maybe it will be a problem in the summer, I will take a think and check if someone I know has done it, first before I do it, because I think it's not good for the engine goes to cold in Winter time when it is 20 and below. Ps.Do u know some that's change termostat to 103 degrees and if that works even in summertime?
I'm pretty sure stock thermostat is closed anyway when the engine is at 60-70 degrees, I don't think replacing it would change anything in this particular situation.
@@Gfalkh.57, maybe it’s beneficial in some other scenario… can’t think of one though. A lot of things exist just to make money on us, like ODB2 power boosters and fuel savers. (=
The thermostat is going to try and keep the temp that it is set for.... But it cant do more than close the circulation... no matter if its a 103 deg o 90deg. And if closing the circulation doesnt get the coolant temp up to normal operating temp then there's nothing extra the 103 deg thermo can do that the 90 deg cant.

I had a 2006 Ford Focus 1.8TDCi and on my bro's b-day 26 February back in 2018 it was -35°C here in Bosnia that night, plus the car was on a parking lot next to a small stream in a 500m, when I started the car it was just fine and I usually don't hit the road in these colds immediatelly I let it warm up for 5-6 minutes then I went on my way, as soon as the turbo kicked in the air tube on its output popped out in such a loud bang I thought the car's engine exploded, terrifying experience.
It's better to turn heat to front window right after you started the cold engine in order it to not get cracked because of hot air hit and too fast temperature change. When engine is not heated, window gets cold air at first and is slowly warming up with engine.
Very nice video, nice end with the autora borealis. Also lovely car and stay safe on those icy roads
Thanks! More videos coming hope you check them out also 🙏
In these conditions it makes sense to put a little bit of cardboard in front of the cooler for the water😅
In Germany, it's forbidden to leave engine ON, while car is not moving !
I love this video , Greet from Poland 🇵🇱😉!
Thanks for watching 🙏
Coldest I've been in with my car (VW CC) has been -25°C. But below -10 or so the coolant doesn't go higher than 60°C. Might need to have the thermostat checked
You can put Diesel additiv in your Car my friend from liquid moly its help to clean your Motor … and it is good when it is cold Outside when you have a diesel 👍🏼
why does he use it eco mode and then losing temperature as driving? Why don't you drive it normal or sport to get the engine with higher load thus creating more heat
I read the headline in the thumbnail and my instant thought was: duh?
very nice car. Please have a towel ready in car to use, and perhaps use some anti fog spray. The auxiliary light is very light but that kind of light is not aiming all to the front, but provides more glare, maybe try a laser projector(do the headlight retrofit) may works.
Was gonna note that the car struggled to get to operating temp. Then I saw you commented on that. As long as you were able to get some heat! What country?
The lowest temperature I have ever experienced while driving a car was 16'C in the mountains (toyota harrier)
in s210 E320cdi i didnt see these things. It started easy with -35 and got warm like always. id like to see what Tesla would do in these conditions.
Old diesels is lovely 👊 To be fair I actually know a guy owning a Tesla and he drive daily with it and even live in the coldest place in this town. From what he says in not any problem at all, but I not know for certain is not a close friend.
Here in Croatia the max lowest temperature recorded was -34.6 Celsius, here on lets say -10 my Renault Megane 1.5dci takes 1-2 pushes of the start button to start(new batter) while my mums Corsa D 2009 1.4 Petrol starts up a bit worse than the megane xD
Great video. I think you do not have heated windscreen yeah? What kind of windscreen washer fluid do you use? It did not froze to the windscreen at all. That is pretty awesome.
No heated window! Used washer fluid concentrate without adding water, is should be mixed 1/1 for -25!
OP German Engineering.
Beautiful Aurora😮
You should drive with rpm over 2300...to keep engine warm and also the car interior...
I have a 2015 E350. If you don’t drive it within a month it’ll need to be restarted and doesn’t like it. I left it out during winter and it wouldn’t start ethier.
They are finicky unfortunately when it comes to hard(er) strength tests like this. Everyday and in most situations I’ll still take it.
For hardcore situations like this or where it really matters.. I’ll take a Toyota Land Cruiser or similar.
What figures did you get on the coolant and oil thermometers?
On my N63A I get ~70 / 70 C for coolant / oil with outside temperature circa -10 C
Miss that ride and movies...
Bro is in -40°C weather with bare hands
Obviously u got an Independent heater which can work together with the engine running to keep the coolant temp high enough its good to know when u drive a diesel in north pole conditions btw I was really suprised by the washing fluid not freezing here in the EU they re selling a minus 20 C only ,which freezes at minus 7-8 C
Only 650 r/pm...my om651 works by 950 r/pm at "normal conditions" -5 till 40 dargees Celsius.
Can you Tell me wich oil do you use? 0w40?
I live in VT and I always keep my gas tank topped off in my Volvo at those temperatures.
Amazing car and video!
impressive, i have the e500 cab, not tried it at those temps :)
This is the e350d right? Same engine with my gle350d om642.😄
Yess
OM642 diesel power ; )
Do you have cover on the mask/grill. I usually cover the lower front opening at least. So the intercooler is not going to freeze. At those temperatures I would cover the whole front. It just warms up so much faster than way. It's been quite cold here -20. But today it dropped to -8.
I actually never done it with this car, but is pretty common here in town and also as you say is great to have it days like this.
Is this 4matic or just rear drive? greatings.
4-Matic, I had RWD and is unfortunately terrible bad in snow!
Why in Eco? For an example, in VW systems the Eco setting is controlling climate and heating too. But I'am not know very well the Benz.
Always forget to change it because is start with eco as standard mode! But is not affecting the heat system!
@@MB212G Cool. 🙂
There are no worse conditions for the car than winter conditions and big minuses. The car repair shops are full. I can't believe that the engine cools down while driving a Mercedes. how would these other mortals. :).
wouldn’t it be better to like tape off the front grille so cold air has a harder time reaching the engine? Then the oil temperature should be less of a problem
coldest i drove in was around -33c i'am from Canada but i really in the South of Quebec it gets pretty cold here sometimes and also really hot in the summer
Incredible! Imaging try to do that in a electric car.
Works just fine in a electric car.
Volvo/Polestar no problem. ❤
Actually I never done any investigation in this topic. Never experienced any problem other then the engine temp going down.
@@vovs3167 Hmmm,,, but there most be a reason why a103 degrees termostat exist ;)
This is sveden so cool
At minus 40 I would not leave house, no matter what car was waiting for me in garage. Damn. I'm cold while just watching the video.
Om 642 the best diesel engine nowdays
I've seen TDIs start up in the mornings at -41. This is Mercedes and I doubt -40 will hold it back from turning on.
One question - why don't just buy gas engine while living in this harsh of a climate?
OM642 🔥
BMW would refuse to start at -39°c . No crank no start but i got an iDrive message saying engine start was not possible
How reliable is this car? I have heard bad stories about this generation?
Hey man nice car, what do you mean typical problem with ice? Because thats for all w212?
Yess something is not fully right with the window heating, I heard from other about same experience and also I have the same on all 3 different 212 I have own.
@@MB212G wow 3 cars, i really love design of w212 but why 3😀
First I bought a E220 2012 without 4-Matic that’s was a big mistake, then I sold it and got a E250 2015 with 4-matic I bought the car unseen big mistake paint was totally bad on the car, sold it and got this lovely E350 unseen not a mistake 😜
It's an old merc, it can do anything
does the ac work? the engine was at 80c most of the time
I can’t believe such cold
Is it a 4matic or a rear wheel drive??
isnt better to use recirculation for not frosting the windows inside?
4:03 WOW
Can't go to 80 grades in such cold :))
keep AC on at all time and any season!
Better choose lower gear, for keep engine warmer.
never see any car temp dropped while driving before.. in malaysia it will maintain at the middle temp which is normal......
What places did you drive?
I recently got a glk with 62k miles... yours is over 130
Wow benz are strong.
Do you find the heater to be able to keep the cabin at a comfortable temp?
Yess actually is really good at that. But days like this auto is not good need to blast it more!
how come the AC isn't on to get the moisture out? oh my, it's a diesel, running at 70 C... dpf death coming soon...
I live in nothern Sweden too and yesterday when i drove to stockholm i had the same problem thats displayed at 0:48 in the video and it was a pain in the ass , especially when my auto wipers went on.... and i was driving on the highway too. Volvo v60
Common issue and actually kinda hard to do anything when is this cold other then put some protection against the engine! But I feel this particular model is much worse then other car I drove.
In such cold temperatures u should hold at least 2000rpm so the engine can warm it self at least a little bit
Temperature shouldn’t be going down that fast. I think maybe there’s a problem with coolant control valve. Because I had same thing on my A6 in cold weather when idling due to this.
It was literally -40°C outside and he opened the hood.
@@Betis16 So what? If temp is unde 90c, coolan system close itself, and it should get warm untill 90. Something is wrong with a car
@@deki90to It’s completely normal in those conditions for Diesel car to have trouble maintaining the operating temperature. I drove E200d 2018 in -15 C weather and it couldn’t reach operating temperature because it was simply too cold. V6 Diesel is better making heat than the 4 cylinder though. If you haven’t experienced these kind of conditions and how it’s different with diesel you can’t know.
Ihope the cylinders dosent get *Frostbitten!* lol 😄
No, the engine can handle this temperature. When it goes below -45 degrees celcius, then you might have a problem with frostbitten cylinders.
I just keep on wondering how high quality your fuel is.... as the fule where I am (Bulgaria) is complete rubbish and often happens to freeze (diesel fuel - personal experience) within temperatures around -10 -12 ...
Probably betetr I don't have diesel but ive seen diesel cars/trucks drive in -40c in my country atleast. they make 4 different diesel grades depending on the weather.
Now imagine having a flat tyre there
