Ema - The Heart and Soul of Jewish Jamaica
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 июл 2017
- A tribute to a lively, lovely, 100-year old Jewish Jamaican, Evelyn Matalon, also fondly known as "Ema", who recently passed.. Compiled with love from the Team at Cornerstone Jamaica.. Stayed tuned for more from our Jewish Jamaican Heritage Project.
I really didn't know what racism was about until I migrated to America...Jamaicans are filled with love.
Man/sista I'm from the north of Brazil when I moved to Rio de janeiro I started seeing the racism .. when I was in the north I didn't see the boundary between ppl ....
In RJ some black ppl don't like when white ppl use black things . They acuse them of steeling their culture..
I Know exactly what u mean
I experienced it my third day in america
Really. Look around jamaica and see who own most of the wealth. Racism in Jamaica may not have been blatant but it exist. Why do you think there is a huge bleaching problem in Jamaica.
Yeah, but these non black Jamaicans sure are racist towards black Jamaicans when they come to Canada
P Money thats racist
Oh my word! I’m sure this same lady, Mrs Matalon, was my Brown Owl (Brownies Leader) back in the 70s at Yallahs Primary School, St. Thomas! The person I remember was sweet, kind, patient, nurturing and oh so lovely. I remember she used to travel from Stanton all the way to Yallahs to run the club. I smiled even more when I noticed that we were both born on the same day of November 😊. I came back to the U.K. many years ago and sometimes wondered what happened to her. Thanks for posting this - brought tears to my eyes to see this.
My great gran was married Murray but she was said to be Philip's who it is alleged to be Jewish but had name changed.
Yes, I remember her as Ms. Eva, same brownie lady. Kind, sweet and a generous heart. Used to get a lift from her from Stanton Rd to Morant Bay High.
Elaine Hamilton I went to Morant Bay High too during the Parkins headship. Left in 86 to come back to the U.K.
@@thegreencord2985 Common threads...beautiful memories, those were the wonderful days of old🎈
I was born in Morant Bay and lived in St Thomas till I was five years old. Been in the UK ever since. Can't wait to go back home - Yah willing!
What a lovely woman! My grandmother that passed away before I was born was a Jamaican Jewish woman and whenever I see a woman like her when I'm in Jamaica, I imagine that must be what my gran must have been like. 🥲
I love these random Jamaican-themed videos. Little by little, they all contribute to disassembling the global stereotypes relative to Jamaican culture. The island has such a rich, multicultural history. It's refreshing to see more varied Jamaicans lending their voices as testimony to the island experience. There are many different ingredients responsible in creating the distinctive flavor that is Jamaica.
very true
This lady reads without glasses.
Janet Hutchinson: yes! 😊. Incredible.
Amazing 😂
Prolly had laser eye surgery.
Healthy Jamaican food.
Janet, thanks for pointing that out, didn't even realise
I recall meeting her and she was every bit as delightful. I was amazed by how much technology she used to keep in touch with family and friends. Such a remarkable lady. Thanks for capturing and sharing the love.
This is jamaica. Superb and splendid
I agree with her as a Jamaican, I never what was racism growing up, we were all one. God bless Jamaica. She is a Lovely lady. Speak truth from the heart.
Lol Jamaica was literally built as a country of slaves
@@stefan_4508 You sound like an outsider.
Same for my parents when came here to England. One teacher said to my mom live in Mud hunts and mom said sorry but your wrong we love house built out brick. My mom told me and my little sister.
When Blacks sre the majority there is rarely ever racism.
Proud Jamaican here... bless up.. I have Jewish blood also
You mean European blood.
Beautiful lady, it’s very important to highlight the cultural minorities in Jamaica. Like East Indians, Germans of Seafood Town and the old Chinese community. Jamaica is a country that is largely populated by people of African decent who are the greatest influence on its unique culture.
I’ve heard of many different types of ppl in Jamaica, but I never even thought about Jewish people in Jamaica. That’s so cool!
Our motto’s OUT OF MANY ONE PEOPLE 🇯🇲 don’t see colour
Yes my dear, I am part Jewish , my granddad was French Jewish Orthodox and my Grandma was Spanish Catholic, on my dad's side of the family, my mom's side is English and Scottish descent
Am 21 years old and my due to my shin color ppl don't believe my great great grandmother is also jew , my great grandmother always said her mother was a white woman and she herself is brown because her father is black anyways I only know my great grandmother story since her mother died long ago
So am Jewish decent too
UMM IF YOU DID RESEARCH YOU WOULD KNOW WE ARE THE ORIGINAL JEWS “ CHILDREN OF ISRAEL” theres plentt of reggae songs explaining this too
Jamaica is an Island of all races, out of many one people.
"Ethnicities," Paulette J. There is just one "race" -- the human race! And we are all of the human race.
I know, though, the pervasive problem. Many of us were either brought up with or otherwise exposed to such misleading & actually inherently prejudiced terms as "races" -- which term unfortunately suggests that we are not all simply of the one race began with Adam & Eve being created by the Almighty -- & we who believe all human beings are of equal biology & value have without realization taken to using these terms coined or distorted by the hateful segregationists although we don't agree with their wicked ideologies. From I have realized this, I have exercised great attendance to my vocabulary so that I am not using the terminology & phraseology of those with whom I disagree & so that I am not inadvertently promoting points of theirs. "Races" in this context is such terminological use to avoid.
Please note that I believe you are not an ethnic bigot but are rather just a person like me who loves every nationality & ethnic group of humanity. I'm just trying to point out that we need to be careful that we are not using the very same terms & phraseology of the opposite side, of the haters who somehow think themselves right in hating those who do not look like them or use their same language.
Anyway, be blessed!
Paulette J. Almost every country is a place of all races. Yes, Jamaica has many races, however how you can say it is an island of all races when the population is approximately 90% Black is quite frankly ridiculous.
You sounding like an Agent, please go check your facts cause they are not truth.
The Only Truth Jamaicans had revolutions and rebellions what did your people do to fight back? They gained an homeland of their own like other islands in the Caribbean . I think you need to worry about the fact that black Americans still live under a colonialistic system and in a land that is not their own and their leader doesn't look like them.
The Only Truth so why should that bother you? You are not Jamaican. Let Jamaicans deal with it if They see it as an issue which most don't.
Everybody was just together"..... Out of Many One People.
I think people from other countries find it difficult to believe that's how we live, especially Americans.
Americans are ignorant. I dont bother with them
true
@@overnow4315 not all Americans are ignorant to other cultures. I am American and I love learning about other cultures. I will say that for the majority of Americans, it sometimes depends on the level of exposure they have to other cultures and interest they have to learn about them beyond what they hear on the news.
I grew up having my mother listening to the Three Tenors and both of parents exposing me to going to stage productions , my first, my dad took me to see "Dream Girls" @ 10 yrs old. My mom and I spent many years going to see operas and concerts and we went to Europe 12 years ago.
I've watched hours of American public television where I've learned about different ethnic groups that have immigrated to America from all over the world. I have met people from Kenya 🇰🇪, Albania🇦🇱, Ukraine, Jamaica🇯🇲, Belize 🇧🇿, Ethiopia🇪🇹 Eritrea🇪🇷. All over the world really. I live in a major city and state that is very diverse with people from different nationalities.

bred? who uses such illiterate language.
She reminds me of my grandmother. She was the same complexion and was from fairy hill in Jamaica. Loved the video!
We dont know racism in Jamaica, my family is mixed with four different races and we all live one another,,,, Jamaica land we love
You don't know racism in Jamaica because blacks are at the bottom of the totem pole and hardly mix with the so called Whites who are at the top.
@@jennyhiggs5288 if you and many people have that mindset, then the outcome will be like that.
There is no racism but there ia definetly classism
Jamaicans sure know homophobia tho
I agree I am Italian decent all my life I have been around Jamaicans and people of the Caribbean thy have always treated me good thy Always offering me something to eat just like it is an Italian household you never leave hungry that's a shame
What a lovely lady, love sent to all races.

Nancy so true
Shes so cute.
I love my people. 🇯🇲🇯🇲
everybody loves there people but not everyone feels the need to make it explicit because doing so causes divisions where none should exist.
Watching this video to get a sense of my Jewish roots. My grant grandmother is of Lebanese decent or what we in Jamaican call Syrians
Her mind is on point!!!
Wonderful , a different kind of people with wonderful hearts .
Wow she looked great for 100 and could’ve easily passed for 80! Plus her accent was more UK than Jamaican. May she R.I.P.
Her accent is very much Jamaican, not UK. It's just an upper middle class Jamaican accent, which has a particular manner of speaking and diction. Many Jamaican families in her social/economic class sound like this (and not just the white ones).
they say out of many one people, one prefect love, love is universal and love never seen colour, 🇬🇧🍵💯love is the answer✌

This was a very goid interview. Soft spoken yet full of experiences and ready to share.
My condolences
This was beautiful.
Silly negative comments! All the black people who are claiming JA, remember we too are from Africa!!!
Yes, I never understand black Jamaicans who are telling others that they don't belong in Jamaica. We come from Africa! the only people who truly belong to the Island are the Tainos
Beautiful lady .... may the Lord Jesus continue to bless her and her family.
errol kong already seen Him.... and will see Him again. Give your life to Jesus and let’s go to heaven!
What a nice video and rip to the woman being interviewed. I recall the synagogue in Kingston, it was beautiful and historic. I went there several times when Rabbi DaCosta lead the services. He was a descendant of the Jews that fled Europe during the Spanish inquisition. Haven't seen that Rabbi in 15+ years, but I heard the synagogue has changed.
I am laughing at some of the comments. There was a time in Jamaica you had to be high light skin/ mix to work in the Banks , offices & for Air Jamaica most popular Airline at the time no black complexion was seen. Certain jobs especially you are not mix keep it moving. It got even worse when the blackmen only wanted to date & marry mix girls. 😎😎 . When I came to the USA and started working for a large corporation I saw every color different Folk from all over the world. We were all treated the same. Had I lived in Jamaica I would never be able to work for such a corporation. 😁 Yes out of many one people sounds so beautiful. BUT 🤓✌✌✌❤❤❤
Colourism was a big one ... Even now I turned 20 and there was outrage the other day when a application criteria said "light skin" ... However, I went to a Kingston all girls school and i was one of the darkest girls and I was not treated different compared to a white or Asian student... We all could be reprimanded or praised if we did well ... So I didn't experience it in school but in society yes ...
@Jodie Osbourne I find that hard to believe that an application said light skin. That company can be sued for discrimination. Did you take a picture of the application?
@@alexyoung7371 it caused great backlash and they withdrew it. But my stance is that, if you see a company do something like that you don't argue with them, just point it out publicly and watch them wither by withdrawal of support. Because they are not sorry and those thoughts do reflect their moral as a company and no sensible progressive person would ever work with them...
@Jodie Osbourne Good insight. Keep your head up and I definitely know that racism, colourism and discrimination is real; moreover, discrimination is rampant in the black community (the obsession of “light skin” and quote and quote “good hair”). It’s absolutely disgusting and shows a lack of education as well as understanding. Embrace your Afro features and walk with pride by holding your head high because you’re proud of who you are. Moreover, don’t look for a job but rather start a little business and try to scale it. I can tell that you have a great spirit; don’t let it be broken and keep yourself pure. #Blessings
@@alexyoung7371definitely, I will be finishing my bachelor's next year, I will be joining the military as an public relations officer and then from my salary save enough to fund the starting of my own business. I am not interested to work for any traditional company that just wants to hire brainpower and intellectual black people to do all the thinking and analysing for them to make them richer. Business is for everyone, including black women...
She has that classic Jamaican accent. It is beautiful 😍 😍😍

The first Europeans to settle in Jamaica were of the Critical Colón family followed by Jews fleeing from Bahía in Brazil after Spanish & Portuguese fleet recaptured it from the Dutch. According to what I've read, they were the ones who let the English know that the island was unfortified. So their roots go as far back as the 2nd decade of the 17th century.
Ahhh you might want to check your facts as the British took over the island from Spain in 1654. Colonel James with then Penn and Venables captured the island from Spain. Colonel James then settled in Jamaica and had their first Daughter in 1655 and a son Richard James in 1656.

The majority of course were christians. Smith was the wealthiest of all and christian scotish. Lindo was the wealthiest jewish slaver.
