"Migraine" is one of my favorites, by far... lyrically speaking... Also Some of the first album ("The pantaloon", "Trapdoor", "March to the sea"...). And totally agree with you: you can use these lyrics in a literature class... in fact, I do it often with my students!! Hugs from Buenos Aires!

I always imagined the letters by his bed to be the drafts and song pieces, the mental notes he scribbled down when the shadows wake him up at night. And I can see it being the other type of letters, too. I think he would leave it up to us to relate.
This song is one of their best, imo as well. Every line. Some other little things I like are when he's making the gesture about his pain ranging from up, down, and sideways, it makes a sign of the cross. His struggle with faith is painful in the beginning of the song, and by the end, he's talking about preserving hope. I also like what you said about it being cardinal directions, and he's giving us the location of his mind instead of saying 'mind,' sort of signaling that we'll have to find the location of our own wars to wage, too. That fits really well with dema lore.
I also really like the lion references. Always makes me think of Cut My Lip and Tyler leaning on his pride... of lions. He's replaced the suicidal crazed lions with a pride of lions, a family who protects each other. 'I don't mind at all, lean on my pride, I'm a lion.' And he wears the big cat shirt in Guns for Hands, so the transition was in progress.
Actually, I really just love every line of this song, too. When I taught high school English, I had my students do a presentation on their favorite song lyrics as poetry. The outcome was really inspiring. Too bad we didn't have TOP then. I def would have done a whole unit on them, if not a whole class, easy!
    Lovin' what you're doin'! FPE |-/ 🤍🤍

I actually think the Bible makes perfect sense for Sunday’s being his suicide days. Later on, he discusses how he’s sorry for putting on a fake front by telling people that his days are going great with green gardens, etc. When deep inside he is distressed. That’s a very common thing among Christians on Sundays because they have to go to church and feel the need to present everything in life as if it’s going well when we are actually struggling deep inside. I know many people who dread Sundays because of that. At least that is always the thing that comes to mind when I hear this song that he is dreading Sundays because he has to put on the positive Christian charade When that is not what is going on inside.

This is one of my favorites. And it’s even more amazing live. Tyler let’s the audience sing the first verse. It’s so powerful.
This song is linked to the video for The Outside in several ways. I love how the themes connect across the albums. Once you go through the Scaled and Icy videos and you get to The Outside, come back to these lyrics.

Tyler has always questioned his faith and the existence of God. The lyric of "up down and sideways" is him making the sign the cross. Fridays tend to be the end of the work week but you still have to go to Church on Sunday which seems like work. He's suicidal during those days.
As a former Catholic, altar boy and choir member I know what this can feel like. It's not fun having this weekly ritual and replaying it over and over and over again. Having to tell the family it's not your thing makes it worse. My grandma cried for three days when I told her I didn't believe it.
It's a constant struggle when you are young when people are trying to indoctrinate you. You don't know who to trust and it's a migraine.

Letters by his bed = day of the week

  • @travismattingly1414

So the Letter by his bed could be the bible because a common theme in Tyler's early music is his struggle WITH his faith, and it could have been written at a time where he had fallen out with his faith, and the bible by his bed on Sundays is like an icon to his self failings which has a big impact on the mental struggle.

great section as always. i think y’all pretty much got it right. the only thing i kinda felt different abt is the letters by his bed. i used to think he was referring to his songs/poems. he has mentioned in interviews that when he was younger he would fall asleep while writing lyrics and poems. and would wake up in the middle of the night with an idea or a line that he would add. but nowadays i agree with y’all that it’s most likely sui***e notes. |-/

My favorite song and video by 21 pilots. I heard the theory that the letters referred to the Bible but I think it’s suicide letters.

Great videos! I also feel like you should just let the music do its work for your friend rather than make suggestive gestures and try to instigate a reaction out of him (2:17). Otherwise it's not his genuine reaction, but rather it's him reacting to you. Which dilutes the purpose of the video. Just a suggestion!

They are college admission and rejection and scholarship acceptance and rejection letters.
They symbolize change. For many kids at the age Tyler was when he wrote this, the life that is just around the corner is t-e-r-r-i-f-y-i-n-g.
