- Questions are surrounding New York Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant following the team's first round exit in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Friedman joined NHL Now to discuss what the Rangers could do next.
firing Gallant would be a big mistake. He deserves at least another go at it.
Zero adjustments in 2 years. Outcoached by every single coach on any team and carried by Igor. He doesn’t last anywhere for more than 2 years and we’ve already witnessed the reason.
@@zaythedon3561 perfectly said
Welp, seems like the org disagreed with you on that one
Best players are soft they are stuck in east west game even though coach told them to play north south game. Until they get rid off the bad habits they'll be a soft team.
Calgary Flames: "Please fire Gallant. Please fire Gallant"
If there was an empty/open net, Panarin would probably make one more extra pass. People hated on Kane but on a bum hip he put up 6 points. I’d easily take him back. But we needed more grit.
@KDAWG1287 You have a point about Kane. I would take him back too if they can fix his bad hip. But, from what I've heard yesterday, it would mean that he would not be ready to play when the next season starts and who knows for how long if he has to go through surgery.
Not to mention the cap issues.
We say this every year about grit. I’m not asking for goons but enough with figure skaters
@@Ghoulfella Ryan Reeves was needed more than ever. He should have been played and not benched in the regular season. If anyone could have motivated the team there was no one better than Revo to do ir.
Gallant did a great job In the regular season, only 3 games the Rangers played great,Sasterkin played great all games. The Rangers need players who play great in the playoffs.
Messier will straighten these players out.
I don’t know man. Messier is the man, but his judgement may be be clouded by his love of the team.
Gallant has to go. They were up 2 nil and with the exception of games 3 and 6, didn't show up and especially in game 7. We were watching the Stars-Kraken game last night and I turned to my wife and asked if the Rangers had the same intensity in game 7 and she said "hell no." If you can't get your team up for game 7 then you should be fired.
If you can’t stick up for a coach that brought you two good years after several awful years, you deserve to be awful.
His players didn’t play well AT ALL in Game 7. There’s only so much a coach should have to do to get his players to play. The problem is they’re paying too much to Trouba and Panarin. They also brought in Tarasenko and Kane despite needing more grit, not flair. Did Gallant give them that money and make those moves?
@@logand3957 They interviewed Trouba Yesterday and asked if Gallant should stay--his answer wasn't very enthusiastic.
@@fasteddie9867 Yeah I saw that. Ironic coming from the overpaid guy. I guess maybe there’s something brewing in the locker room that I don’t know about, but it still seems strange to me. In most cases, firing Gallant would be a step back. Look at what happened with the Islanders firing Trotz
Gallant was not the issue. He juggled his lines as much as possible and played match up hockey. Our defensive core was not good. Trouba was not good, Miller was not good, in fact very very soft in his play. Fox made some bad play decisions that cost us a goal or two. Panarin for the 2nd straight year did not show up. Kreider was fine. The kid line was a non factor. The 4th line with Motte, Vesey, and Goodrow was pretty good. Kane is now washed up. He did not help at all. He was slow and pensive and everyone deferred to him because of his pedigree. Tarasenko is a keeper. The difference last year was toughness, Ryan Reeves. We have a lot of skill and talent on paper but no toughness. The same thing happened in the Cup finals in LA, lots of talent but no toughness. The make-up of the team is on Drury not Gallant.
Keep Gallant, sign Tarasenko, Trade Laffer, toughen up Miller or trade him, promote Chytil and Kaako. GET MORE TOUGHNESS!
This is Drury and dolan
Agreed
@@robbynealzucker3408 lol. Well he’s now gone. Let’s see what CD brings in.
The team needs a real X's and O's coach, they need structure. GG is not a systems coach.
Ryan Reeves should never have been let go.If there was anyone to motivate & wake up his team Revo was the man to do it. Don't put the blame TURK blame the entire team who left Igor to be THE LONE RANGER.
He was the heart and soul of the team! They did him dirty. They leaked to the media he requested the trade. He did not. He wanted to stay.
that guy is a locker-room jester, the worship with that slow plug needs to stop. He's not what they need, they need a Bertuzzi or Wilson, unironically
@@TheFaustianMan This guy Dead Pixel who called Ryan a locker room JOKE Jester. Is dead wrong as his Dead Pixel surname. Every teammate he has ever played with Loves him. I loved him from The Blues to Pittsburgh to Vegas to New York & Minnesota. Treated unfairly by former teams who did not know what he contributes. Check out the new analysis on today's video. This guy defends Revo and hits a Bulls Eye on what The Rangers need. Mike Keenan was the perfect coach for them and they couldn't walk over him. It's produce or be benched. Over the years Rangers have had soft coaches starting with Emile ( The Cat) Francis) who was a Pussy Cat. When The Flyers were terrorizing The League Brad Park said he instructed them not to fight. Francis caused the 2 Best Goalie Combo Giacomin & Villlmure Cup Rings. Henrik ( Hank) Lundqvist THE BEST GOALIE THE RANGERS EVER HAD & THE BEST IN THE NHL DURING HIS CAREER WAS ALSO DENIED A RING BY HIS TEAMMATES WHO ALWAYS LET HIM DOWN.
Gallant needs to go. The core of the team is not changing and they are not playing well for him anymore. Panarin especially has a very fractious relationship with Gallant. Unfortunately, the Rangers are not two gritty forwards away from winning a cup. The team needs a change in culture. They a very complacent.
The team has averaged 50 wins the last two seasons. Thats not a culture issue. The reality is Drury falls in love with Eurostars who are masters at skating but forgot you need a balance with speed and physicality. Once they traded reeves away they became the softest team in the league. Only Trouba knows how to hit people. You can put all the skill talent you want on a team, but at the end of the day the playoffs require being gritty as well. They were two gritty forwards away from winning the cup, but we got Kane and Tarasanko instead.
@Eric Dorsey Then, why did Zibanejad only score 1 goal the whole series? He's not a "Eurostar". The team is complacent. They need a change in leadership
Everyone's accountable including the sins of the last regime.
Trouba mistake
Zibanjad should be 2nd line center or needs MUCH better wings
Trichrck perfect 3rd line. Kreider bumped to the 3 rd line too
Somethings gotta change because the DNA of this team just ain't enough
Are you insane? Mika scores 40 goals that’s not a second line player.
you understand you cant pay a 2nd line center 8.5 mio, a 3rd line winger 7 mio?? take off your manager hat, you have no clue what you are talking about. management decided to pay a regular season monster and -16 career playoff performer 12 mio bucks. Mika hasnt been doing hot in playoffs either. either they perform or the Rangers arent going anywhere with 20+ mio spent on guys not bringing it. Trading Buchnevich was beyond stupid, the high draft picks havent worked out. they either give it another shot or make some moves like trading LaF.
The did not look good coming down the stretch, they looked apathetic and disinterested just cruising to the playoffs. For a large part of the season they played well below capability aside from a couple of stretches, especially the stretches where Shesterkin was on his game. I don't dislike Gallant, but he's overly rigid especially when it comes to the kids. He's a players' coach and no tactician, either he didn't listen to the advice of his assistants as to in-game adjustments OR they didn't provide any answers. Something needs to change - either the assistants have to go or GG and his coaches. It's also just possible that despite their veteran talent this teams needs a different coach, perhaps more of a taskmaster or a coach who exhibits less of a laissez-faire attitude towards the players ... and NO, no to Quenneville ... please, no more tired retreads.
In the end the players are responsible for mailing it in, that said it's easier to make a change up top rather than try to move the players primarily responsible.
If anyone thinks this is Turks fault your kidding yourself! They went for skill, instead of gritty hard nosed players! Just look at Florida! & what there doing! Turk wanted grit& they went the other way. Plain & simple
5v5 play was already weak before Tarasenko & Kane were brought in. It’s been weak the 2 seasons GG was here. Team has trouble winning when the PP goes cold, which is not a recipe for winning the Stanley Cup.
Madison Square Garden, where hockey coaches come to die. Wash, Rinse, Repeat.
And Nostalgia acts, aka washed up players. Kane, Gretsky, Jagar.
A SC 1940..a SC1994… patience isn’t a virtue here..there’s a pervasive restlessness. It’s a big place with piles of hockey narratives..every year a lot in the mix..running coaches and players through it’s a choppy blender..
Rangers may need a new owner not a new coach 🤷♂️ othmann and some other surprises not to mention 4 million dead cap coming off the books. Next year was always the play for the rangers. You always want to win but this team is just not there. I feel bad for maple leaf fans more so then anyone.
The only thing Gallant deserves is to be under the microscope nxt year, he does not deserve to be fired, that said if a 3 x Stanley Cup winning coach is available, reality is your letting your current coach go to get him.
And now he's been let go. I swear NHL coach is the most disposable job position on earth.
Maybe Chris Drury should go, he seems to be the problem; bringing in a has been like Kane who couldn't crack an egg going into the corners. Not that anyone witnessed that.
You know, trades at Deadline either help you or hurt you. Big splashes to get Taresenko and Kane. However, the team chemistry got screwed up. You can see it in their play. There was no chemistry with core players, and the two additions!
We had no chemistry all season, GG runs a nonstop line mixer. This is 100% on GG and his system of having no system
@@mikenyr4life491 If you say so. No argument from me, just analyzing 7 game playoff games with NJ. Can't say about regular season, perhaps skill got them wins? Or maybe Shesterkin playing lights out?
Whatever Friedman. Sure it was all about the rangers playing badly, not one mention of the fact that the Devils outplayed them. Typical.
They did 4games they won but not 3games they loss. Something happen after Win Game 2. To me they tank or fix's was in.
The Devils did play well, but there’s no denying that the Rangers played very poorly. Both things can be true, no need to get butt hurt about it. Would you say the current 2-0 lead the Canes have over the Devils is because the Devils are playing well but the Canes are just so much better?
Management made a huge miscalculation by taking the risky ‘player rental’ option at the trade deadline. ✔️
the rangers were NEVER a great team this year , they have no heart they fell to NJ just like they played the whole year
I hope we don’t have to wait another 30 years for a cup! This is ridiculous!
If the do get rid of Gallant, which they SHOULD NOT! I want Sutter now.
That’s a downgrade even players in Calgary waived their NTC to get away from him
@@pottytheparrot310 exactly… tell me you have never played professional sports.
@@Hockeistguyalive Id say get rid of GG too but i’d go after coaches like Sullivan if his job holds up
@@Hockeistguyalive have you played pro sports?
Do not get rid of Gallant. His lazy fat cats are to blame. If Gallant was to go I think Hank or P.K. would make good coaches . Impressed by their insight in Pre & Post Game & Intermission analysis
With all this talent and the effort they put forth in game 7 is a head scratcher
They weren't as good. It's really that simple.
Not all his fault Drury is at fault mostly and dolan
New Jersey is a good fast young team, that’s why they won, should they not deserve credit, Colorado lost. Boston lost , THATS playoff hockey
I felt the Rangers needed to win in 6, because game 7's usually goes in favor of the team on home ice. And face it the losing coach is the goat. The Rangers jumped leaps and bounds in the past two seasons. Gallant shouldn't be fired, the Rangers need to find players to help them win more low scoring defensive games
Bro always looks like he has a hangover
Friedman sucks
Ridiculous to say that the Rangers looked good going into the playoffs.
They were beating teams 6-0 7-0
The meltdown continues.
THIS IS NOT GALLANT'S FAULT!!!!!
He's the coach of a team that laid a turd in a game 7, dudes partially to blame for his team playing like ass. Lindy Ruff pants Gallant in that series.
It's not. The Devils were the better team and outplayed the Rangers. But you don't hear anything about that, predictably.
@@daniellamont7265 Because the Rangers shit the bed more than the devils dominated
@@mrm6923 i disagree. NJ was such a fast team and exploited the rangers best players. 30+ years vs players under 25
The leadership on this team has gotten stale. Zibanejad hasn't done squat since he was traded here and is as soft as a cheap piece of toilet paper. Other than scoring tip ins and mucky goals around the net Kreider hasn't improved as a playmaker since he joined the team over 10 years ago and doesn't have enough hockey sense to be a leader. The team's two best players Shesty and Bread don't speak English well and rules them out as leaders. That leaves Trouba who did the best he could but isn't the team's best player by any stretch of the imagination. Then you have the hired guns Kane and Tarasenko who were leaders on their previous teams but as temps probably stayed mostly quiet. So there you have it. A coach who doesn't coach and a leadership group that doesn't make any sense. Time to make wholesale changes.
Kreider, and Kakko, OUT. Try to look at Kreider when he goes to the the boards offensively. He is one and done. One poke check, and done. I have NEVER seen him fight for that puck like the rest. Kakko has NOT come around at all. IF anyone know that Gallant can not and has never inspired or motivated this team then, yeah, maybe gone. But I see the player at fault much more than him. Kane stays. Tarasenko stays.
