- Bending and lifting - what should you do/not do if you have scoliosis?
Lifting is a hot topic in the general health and fitness world, and it's even more important to pay attention to your technique when you have Scoliosis or Scheuermann's Kyphosis, or if you've had a spinal surgery (spinal fusion, Harrington rods, VBT, laminectomy, discectomy, or other).
Whether you have to move a box at home, lift a weight at the gym, or grab that pen that you dropped, we all have to do some sort of bending and lifting in our day-to-day lives, so we made a video to address your questions. In this short clip, we discuss:
0:57 - Anatomy of bending and lifting
1:28 - Helpful analogy of the 'bowl' and 'bell' to find your neutral position
2:04 - Issue #1: Caution with rounding when lifting
2:58 - Issue #2: Caution with over-arching when lifting
3:22 - Two solutions to issues #1 and #2
3:59 - Issue #3: Caution with twisting and lifting
4:10 - Solution to issue #3
4:17 - Issue #4: Poor organization of items in container
4:51 - Two solutions to issue #4
5:06 - Issue #5: The sneaky error we don't even know we do!
5:28 - A saying to remember as a solution to issue #5
*Remember - if you have pain, or you want 1:1 advice on your own bending/lifting technique, contact a scoliosis-trained therapist near you, since the information in this video is generalized and cannot be taken as medical advice.

good video. But its difficult to keep your spine aligned perfectly straight as you scooch your hips back when doing a deadlift. I no longer have much of a problem bending my spine too much outward but sometimes it bends too much inwards as well and its hard to keep it straight because I worry I will go back to bending it too much to the outside do you have any exercise to help with that. i can usually make a deadlift movement relatively close to what it should be. I never tried actual deadlift with actual barbells (i don't have the space) but I did do it with kettlebell. also I would like some neck exercises that would help strengthen my neck.
Yes we’re not saying that movements need to be perfectly straight, but rather just try your best to move using as neutral spine position as possible
