  • I apologize for the late post but I’ve been very busy moving back into school.
Over this past summer I spent around 3 months working as a sortation associate for amazon. I wanted to share my take on the job and give an in-depth look for those on the outside. Lots of negative news has surrounded these facilities, watch the video to see my thoughts!

For anyone that's going to work at a fulfillment center, here's some things you need to know.
1.It sucks lol. Def not something you'll want to do forever.
    2. long hours, and most of the work is extremely easy.
    3. Some jobs in there are very taxing physically, but easy. Just doing it for 10 hours a day tends to wear on you.
    4. Mangers don't give a shit about you, they love to write people up for the most petty bs.
    5. Breaks aren't long enough. Takes almost 10 minutes to just walk to the break room, and by the time you sit down to eat, it'll be almost time to walk back to your station, and you HAVE to be back to your station signed in at exactly the time the break is over, or you'll be wrote up.
    6. It sucks

So, I've now worked as a sortation associate for about a month now, for those wondering here are my thoughts:
    1) be grateful you're not at a fulfillment center, they're horrible horrible places, I worked at one 3 years ago seasonal
    2) this job is incredibly easy, honestly it's brainless work, often I drift off and don't even have to think about what I'm doing
    3) that's the problem, this job is depressing, robotic like work
    4) it's much more social than fulfillment centers, but that's not saying much, conversation is still rare as most people don't even speak English
    5) in conclusion, if you need a quick buck and need a job asap, or temporary work while you find something better, this is for you. If not, avoid this job, I'm already gonna be starting a new job. I have no idea how anyone could do this robotic souless job for years.
    6) this dude works 4 hour shifts, that's no typical, most shifts are 10 hours and 7 hours minimum. Take his opinion with a grain of salt, 4 hours of work isn't shit.

Finished my second day at my local sorting center. First half of my shift I was stowing, second half I was picking. So far it pretty simple and straight forward. The scanner pretty much tells you everything you need to know so it wasn’t hard adjusting to the positions. The diverters can really screw you over while you’re sorting. I was assigned G9 and G10, the diverters kept messing up putting G8 items in my isle. Other than that the jobs not bad at all if you aren’t lazy

Yes, so they have what is called a blue badge, which is offered multiple times a year. This changes you from seasonal to permanent in essence. And for overtime, I'm not sure. Depending on where you work, they may push you away from doing it and ask that you not stay after if youre getting to close to that 40 hour mark. I assume if they need the assistance they will allow for it.

There’s only a 5 minute window, you have to be there for your entire shift if not then you will get disciplinary points. You could use your time off to make up every once in a while if you have to leave. As far as staying up, some people use caffeine others just adjust, id say just make sure you get to sleep when you get home and as long you get 6 hours you’ll manage. Plus it’s 4 days on 3 off so if you die for 4 days you could make it up on your weekend unless your a crackhead like me and pickup OT on Thursday night as well.

Physically demanding is somewhat of an overstatement, the job is active but if you pace yourself you’ll be fine. Standing on your feet for that period is a requirement though

Depends a lot on how many days a week, if you take extra shifts, etc. More detail would be better. To calculate simply multiply the hours x the wage (8x16.25) and then multiply by days per week (4? 5?) then multiply by 4 (4weeks per month) and you'll have your untaxed income. Figuring out tax is trickier, depending on your total income it varies

Only downside was it was part time, and the facility wasn’t weather controlled, so in the winters and summers it was one extreme or the other. They may have changed things by now.
