I would think the luckiest F1 drivers are those who never got seriously injured.
Like Sir Jackie Stewart?
He was lucky to survive
@@disturbdplayernot really 1966 Belgian Gp if I remember correctly
Romain Grosjean...
@@pollemar did grosjean ever have major injuries? maybe in the spa crash but i cant think about anything else
It's crazy to think that despite living for another 43 years, it was the effects of this crash that did ultimately kill him...
Sounds like a Hiroshima story
@@Williamottelucasfuck off, you can't compare radiation poisoning to a fire
He also had 2 kidney transplantations over the years due to that accident, because all those medication he needed after Nürburgring wasted them.
Not before winning 2 more championships. Drivers those days like Lauda and Jackie Stewart drove with the high chances of death at the back of their minds in every race. Modern F1 drivers not so much, had the death statistics continue to be high, you can bet most would retire after winning 3-4 world titles.
You can live 1 year with cancer or 50 year
But if the cancer gets you in the end its get you
Dosnt matter how long a injury take.
But if it willing to take ya out
Youre clock is running
Getting back in the car just a month after you almost died in the most gruesome way imaginable is probably the most badass move F1 ever saw.
True
True. Its pretty amazing or just insanity at its best
100% B.A.D.A.S.S.!
Then... he pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history, getting back into the car at Monza, with criticisms from the reporters and the blood pouring from his wounds

Niki Lauda was lucky to have a great condition, a good strength and a survival instinct like no other. R.I.P Niki.

"tell the priest to fuck off", what a legend
You people have serious problems and you won't be thinking that's funny and so cute when you're standing in front of GOD!!
I've read somewhere that he went back to the scene of his crash some years later with some friends....a fan spotted him...was in awe and asked him what he was doing there.... Nikki's reply....oh.. just looking for the other part of my ear!!!! legend
@@peteanderson4395 hahahaha thats some really cool fact, thanks for sharing
@@minigiant5138 I know that was documented in one of the many books I have about Lauda
@@peteanderson4395 🤣🤣🤣
There are F1 drivers, that had more success, that have more titles and more records under their belt, but in terms of sheer badassery, no one comes close to Niki Lauda, a man that nearly died in a horrible crash, was severely injured and despite all that, a month later, went back to racing.
Austrians... Hermann Maier did something similar... after almost losing his leg, he went on to win the Alpin Ski Championship again, not to mention his crazy sh*t in Nagano.
@@ZapOKill It is the kind of story everyone likes: Someone who overcame tragedy without flinching.
Drivers in those days like Lauda and Jackie Stewart drove with the high chances of death at the back of their minds in every race. Modern F1 drivers not so much, had the death statistics continue to be high, you can bet most would retire after winning 3-4 world titles, maybe only just 2 titles, as there are 2 times more races in a year now.
Niki Lauda was one of the most determined men in history in my opinion. After being on death's doorstep, comes back to win the championship 2 more times, then after leaving racing, decides "Oh, well I suppose I'll create an airline now and pilot one of my fleet aircraft". I can't imagine a more impressive comeback than that. He will always be remembered for these things, and I'm sure he will continue to inspire more generations of ambitious young people everywhere.
It gets crazier still.
When one of his planes crashed, Niki was absolutely horrified. Investigatiors concluded a thrust reverser had activated in flight. (It redirects engine airflow to help stop a plane on the ground - a technical glitch caused it to make an uncommamded deployment in flight, as there wasn't a fail-safe.) Boeing, the company that made the plane, said such an event would _not_ be catastrophic (...once they finally admitted it could even happen). First they tried to blame the engine manufacturer. When this was disproven (the engine had functioned correctly; it has recieved a false signal from the plane), they claimed pilot error. "They could have recovered if they had done 'this' and 'that'." Niki was absolutely furious, and after 15 attempts in a flight simulator, concluded it was not recoverable at all. Niki demanded Boeing make a public announcement to absolve the crew of any blame. Boeing responded by saying it would take months for the legal team to "adjust the wording". Lauda actually told Boeing that if they did not release a statement _the next day,_ he would personally take an identical plane and deploy a reverse thruster in mid air under similar conditions, with media present, just to prove it was recoverable like Boeing had publically claimed. Boeing realized he was dead serious, and they finally admitted that the pilots had no hope of recovering the flight.
TL;DR:
Niki Lauda was a badass (and borderline maniac) who did not fear death.
@@Dat-Mudkip Boeing apparently has a long history of shifting blame about their technical quality control. Thanks for the story, man.
@@arloeikerson3009 They've been doing it for decades. My brother (who is studying to become a pilot) suggested that Boeing and Lockheed are tied together so closely that they can afford the ability to cut corners and get away with (most of) the consequences.
Compare this to Airbus, who at least have to _pretend_ they care about safety for the sake of staying in business.
@@Dat-Mudkip This has aged wonderfully, knowing Boeing hires hitmen to kill whistleblowers
I remember the accident well. We had been following F1, and were shocked at the accident. In my mind, Lauda is still one of the Great Champions.
I was 8 years old when he crashed.
I was 8 too, remember it as if it was yesterday. I was in the UK, little did I know that one day I would be living in Germany only 10 mins away from Nürburgring 😂
Lauda s coming back on the circuit so soon after that terrible accident and clinching third position is the 02nd most greatest moments ever in sports . . .
Arturo Merzario didn't talk about miracles, he said:"necessity makes the mind think sharper" 5:39

There will never be a driver out there that can go through so much and come out the other end still with such talent. No driver has ever beat death like Nkki has. Its more than just racing.
grosjean came close he got lucky that he was easily removeable from the cockpit, that he had modern fire retardant, and the halo all saved his life of 28 seconds in that fireball
@@7gamer630I was thinking of him when I saw the crash he was a very brave man
Niki was a fantastic driver and my Father and I watched in horror when his crash happened...I was only 10 but I'm pleased he survived the crash. RIP to a great technical driver, one of the best.
One of the all time greatest drivers. A proper hero to me. Him and Alex Zinardi for ‘getting back on the horse’ as they say.
i used to watch F1 with my german grandmother and everytime she saw nikki in the pits and garage she woukd be so happy and proud...he was a hero to the german people
Well he was Austrian but pretty popular in Germany too. In the 90s when I watched F1 he was the co host and expert for the broadcast on german TV.
I watched it with my Grandpa and when I saw him for the first time as a co-host, I asked why he looked like this (I was 10 and that was in the high time of Schumacher) my grandpa didn't really explain it to me bc I was so young. When I knew what had happened I began to see him with different eyes. Legend
@@RiesterMeisterGerman cultural sphere isn't really like the more common likeness of language though (e.g. USA, Britain, Ireland, Australia). Of course he's Austrian
I remember seeing him as a little kid on TV and being really frightened by his appearance- it must have been around the time of the crash. My dad told me his name and what happened to him. Even though we never followed F1 it left a lasting impression on me.
The man is a legend, RIP Niki
Niki Lauda is one of the best of all time
3 time world champion
2 of those championships came AFTER this!
Perfect "in-a-nutshell" on one of the most influencial drivers of all of F1 history, not only on the racetrack but so much behind the curtain. Would love to see your take on Laudas Ferrari pal and later disabled rally driver Clay Regazzoni or "gentlemen" driver Jo Siffert.
Man watching the movie "Rush" dedicated to legend Lauda and Hunt made me cry so much ...then i started to explore the early F1 SENNA and others are so brave as well as Romain...
I was lucky to meet him once and I can say that he‘s one of the greatest people I‘ve ever met! What a crazy life!
Man, every time I read about Lauda's crash it always makes me tear up. Same goes with any motorsport crash that is fatal or near fatal.
Niki was badass, not only surviving this awful crash and a coma but back in a car in 33 days. A staunch safety advocate after and because of him lots of things changed in F1 to keep drivers safe. 3 championships and one hell of a career. RIP Niki
I was on the track with my parents when I was 8years at that time, Niki had his accident but it was on the other side of the track!
From that moment on F1 had my intrest, and you guess it Niki Lauda was always my favourite driver!
R.I.P. a great driver and honest man 🙏🏻🏆🥇
Rest in peace Nicki you are still a great legend and a great driver kind regards to your family 😢
i met Nikki at the 2017 Australian Grand Prix, he was the nicest man i have ever had the pleasure to talk to. Its incredibly hard to believe that a man having gone through so much could be so open and kind. Nikki will forever be one of the greats in my mind.
the fact that he raced 40 days later with such serious and painful burns is remarkable and speaks to his motivation level. A true champion.

I am so old that I remember this accident. He was an unbelievable guy. Bless you, Niki.
I wouldn’t wish those 55 seconds on my worst enemy
Great respect to the drivers who tried to help and saved him, God bless you.
Without Lauda's accident Hunt would never have become world champion.
Does it hurt you? Life is unpredictable.
I do agree but I still think Hunt also earned his championship.
Wow! I sure wish I could have met this man! Also, I wish I could have met all of the men involved in his rescue. They are the absolute real deal. I still have goosebumps! You did a great job on this video! I have always loved racing both Formula One and Stock car. My new husband (M 1982-2016) was all about basketball and American football. He was incredulous when the Indy 500 was coming up and I was so excited! He had never watched it. (I then was incredulous!) LOL I was born and raised in Ohio so my whole family liked the Indy race. I also HAVE to watch The Triple Crown races too. He said cars going around in a circle...bah. Until he watched it. He was addicted to Nascar as bad as I was and Formula One. He had never watched horse racing, but he got into horse racing and I learned about football and basketball. I was always a baseball fan, since I was born in a suburb if Cincinnati. (Hamilton).
I saw this on the news at the time ,he was given last rights ,and not expected to live through the night. Real big news at the time.🙏🏆🏁🙏
Also severe lung damage from breathing the superheated air.
A classmate and his father stood just 50 meters away and had to watch this accident. The next day the classmate told us about it and he was noticeably still under the impression of this fiery accident.
great video, keep on doing that
Really happy you liked the video ❤️

I got you on notice brother see you in the upcoming video! ❤
The greatest comeback story, not just in F1, but in all sports. I remember seeing "Rush" in theatres, and my first thought was of how are they going to depict Lauda's crash. It happened a couple years before I was born, but I've been an F1 fan for a solid thirty five years, and the story if Niki Lauda been legendary to me. Daniel Bruhl did an incredible job as Lauda.
I was watching Formula 1 in the late 90s and early 2000s. He was always on the German broadcast as an expert and it was so funny because his attitude just isn't made for TV. But they still hold on to him throughout the years :D
I was 14 when this happened. I remember James Hunt and Niki Lauda. Great days, I wish I could go back and meet my Debra as she was then.
My husband worked at the Mercedes factory for a couple of years and was lucky enough to meet this amazing man. He was the only one there that was allowed to wear a red cap. He was a lovely lovely guy.
He wore the hat to cover his screwed up skin. And he got every year several millions from the companies whose hat he wore. And in his business he was an amazing person, no question.
I met him several times privately. I was shocked to discover a very different person to his carefully constructed public image.
What was he like in public?
Could you tell us?
man these are the stories that bring tears to my eyes
This guy’s channel is underrated.
a man from a time gone by, will never see the likes of some one like Lauda again I had the pleasure to meet him as a young fan, people always say ''dont meet your heroes'' but thats just another silly rule that doesnt apply to him a god among men r.i.p my hero
he was a Legend all his life not only as a Driver but as a human beeing..Rest in Peace Niki
It seemed like Lauda would never return to F1. But then, Lauda got this run:
"he was like a ghost"🥶"tell the priest to fk off"these lines hit hard🥶
True legend felt death came back and beat it -niki lauda f1 hero next all the great ones up there 🙏
Surprised the film Rush hasn't received a mention in the comments, superb film about the Hunt Lauder rivalry
The word legend is bandied about far too much but this guy deserves that badge 100%
The way Ferrari hired a replacement the day after just goes to show how scummy these companies are
What do you want them to do??
They are straight up ruthless when it came to replacing injured drivers or taking responsibility for dead drivers.
Good video. Thank you.
Niki is one of the greatest racing drivers that has ever been. A pure genius.
An amazing person. Whoever doesn't know, look up his accomplishments as a pilot and a commercial airline creator/owner.
Great video! I think 7:33 it is Luca di Montezemelo, not Audetto.
He was a beast. Burns are really gruesome injuries. It’s not like a cut or broken bone that can heal on its own. I can’t imagine the pain it was to slide on a helmet 1 month after accident.
crazy how a 55 second fire took 42 years to kill him. he'll never lose my respect, even if he's dead
One of the greatest drivers in F1 not many drivers would return to drivers seat again after such a horrific accident but his determination he went on to be one of the best, then joined Red Bull in advisory copasery he,is sadly missed by all fans RIP
i don't watch racing but he is a mad lad. niki lauda is crazy
About 1 year after that incident a terrible accident happened that will be remembered for decades no doubt
may he rest in peace the biggest f1 Legend
When you watch the footage you can't believe anyone could survive that hell. Absolutely horrific
As a kid watching that happen live on TV, I'll never forget watching that incident! I remember my dad and I freaking out watching this going on! Burning to death, in my opinion has to be the worst way to go.
Nikki said that after his accident he started to feel tired like he wanted to go to sleep but he fought against it because he knew that ìf he had given in, he would have died. Rip Nikki ❤
James Hunt and Niki Lauda may have been the best thing to ever happen to the sport...different world back then. I think people assume because newer F1 cars are faster that it's more difficult....in some cases those old cars were like strapping a rocket to a steel tube. No ABS, manual shifting which is harder in more ways than most people know. Few years ago they took an mk23 out to show it around the track and it tail spun out and crashed.. very hard cars to drive. It was an amazing time for racing.
Lauda debuted when the likes of Denny Hulme, Emerson Fittipaldi, Jackie Stewart, Jochen Rindt, John Surtees and Graham Hill were still racing, and retired racing with Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Keke Rosberg and Nelson Piquet the Elder. Let that sink in.
Poor Nikki ....... hehad no looks before the crash.
RIP Nikki.
God Bless him. May he rest in peace.
He's the toughest, most badass racer in the history of racing!
and then he decided to make an airline
Coming in 4th, 33 days later! WOW!
I have had the worst day but this bad asses quote" Tell priest to FUCK OFF I'm still alive!" gave me some much needed hope. Fucking Legend
He become more iconic after that scares
Redefining the word legend.

Goosebumps 🥶 🥶
He " looked " like a champion..unreal guts
Great video! Very informative. Yet I still wonder if his wife loved him as much after the effects fiery damage?
He lived till old age good for him. Unlike Aryton Senna who died young. I used to watch him when he wasn't so popular with his black and yellow car. A great driver.
“twee gezichten, 1 formule, net als Lauda en Niki”

I can’t even imagine a minute of that kind of excruciating agony but people have suffered hours even days of that kind of hell. And sadly the majority of us will experience it for all of eternity. God is not merciful to his children…
