For my money and after many decades of opera going and listening and performing, , Neblett is my number one Minnie, also to my taste no one has topped her Marietta's Lied and one more thing, there is a very early Sempre Libera that is frightening it is so good. Love Carol, one of the greatest under rated Sopranos of my llfetime
In 1949 while in Mrs. O'Neal's 4th grade class in South Fort Worth Elementary school she asked the class who would like to see an opera. Only a few of us raised our hands I being one of them having absolutely no idea what an opera was, lol.. That was 68 years ago and I remember the name of the opera as Girl of the Golden West. From that day I became a lover of the opera and classical music in general. Maestro Domingo along with the other two famous tenors have been my favorites. But my first favorite tenor was of course Mario Lanza.
Thank you for sharing this with us. I am still on the hunt for this Fanciulla del West on DVD. I got the Barbara Daniels' version, also with Domingo, and it's ok. I have also just watched one with Zampieri Domingo and Pons which I liked very much. But it is getting increasingly harder to get his work on DVD in the US. I'm just sorry more of his work wasn't committed to film, rather than VHS videotape, which is far too flimsy and cheap for archiving anything. I ask everyone who has anything even remotely interesting to at least, digitize what you have by uploading it here. Chances are good that the copyright/DRM stasi won't or can't care because of the age. Please. L'ora è fuggita!
I suppose no video exists of the dream Neblett/Domingo/Milnes cast (as on the DG cd)? How marvelous that would be to see! Also magnificent to the ear would be a cleaned up sound reissue of the Nilsson/Gibin/Mongelli version. I own that one on vinyl and always loved it -- there is so much drama in the vocal performances that visualizing the show would seem entirely secondary -- Mongelli's Rance is surely the most villainous I've ever heard.
Just read that Ms. Neblett died. Pity her Elletra in the late 1970s at the Lyric in Chicago was not registered (or filmed) - by far, by far the best. Her hysterical laugh at the end of "mad scene" must be heard. Unforgettable: have been looking for a recording, but there is none (there is a recent youtube posting of that aria at the SF opera). She stole that performance of Idomeneo. As Vittelia in the DVD she is riveting too. Do not know why she did not record more or appeared more in DVDs.
I had the privilege of working with Ms. Neblett in the 80's when I was chorus master of Edmonton Opera. She sang Tosca and Aida. In the first two Aida's she had trouble with the infamous high C in 'O patria mia', but she nailed it in the third performance. At the cast part after as I was saying goodbye to her she gave me a peck on the cheek and whispered in my ear 'I finally got that f...ing high C!"
Hey! I was there. He is magnificent in this!!!!
Domingo
he is a god of Olympus

Agree 100%. Fortunate to have several lessons with her teacher, Esther Andreas. That instruction has never left me, it was so profound!
Ditto for me. Her recording of Die Tote Stadt is exquisite and yes, nobody tops her Marietta's Lied. She disappeared far too soon for my money.
2 vocalita' stupende...ASSOLUTAMENTE adatte al repertorio. Grazie
Beautiful voice!! I’m sitting here in Coronado with her husband and were looking at photo albums of them and their beautiful children ♥️
Marianne.😢😢😢. *ex-husband

Maestro's Johnson is the best I've ever seen!
Brava!

?Zampieri? Gran actriz y soprano gritona. Ella fue el lunar en la Scala.

I live for these anecdotes. 😄
Ms. Neblett is great - I don't think there's a BETTER soprano, in this excerpt.
