True story - When Vincent Curatola auditioned for the part of Johnny Sac, he was hearing all of the other contenders auditioning for the part. He heard them screaming, yelling, swearing, etc. When it was Vincent's turn to audition, he sat down and smoked a cigarette and spoke softly. The casting team asked him - "You're doing something totally different from anyone else. Can you tell us why?" Vincent replied - "Johnny Sac is the number two man in New York. He doesn't want anyone to hear what he's saying. If you stood 20 feet away from him, you'd never hear his voice. He's the number 2 mafia boss, not a hoodlum." He was called back immediately to audition again...and asked to share his insights on the character's personality and potential motivation.

He also respected the hell out of Tony. Jersey was a joke but Tony had pull with every family and did his business exclusively with the most powerful of them, and went toe to toe with them on multiple disputes. Tony was respected even if Jersey wasn't. Hell not even Tony respected Jersey, he just wanted to be a boss, even if he was more of a colonel and less of a general. When Johnny tells Tony he blames him for legitimizing Carmine Jr, he's serious because Tony actually gave Carmine Jr enough pull by being approached directly by Tony. It started a war because Tony is known as a smart and serious earner who can match his mouth with aggression.
Besides the legendary Silvio Dante and hilarious Paulie Walnuts, i always loved Johnny Sack. He was easily the smoothest and smartest guy at the table whenever deals would go down. I love it when the show shows that when you are calm and collected, you will likely commit so much less mistakes. In the show, Johnny Sac moving to New Jersey was presented with the narrative that Johnny Sac only moved there to gather intel on Tony’s crew. But Tony seemed more worried about what influence Johnny could have on his crew because he knew Johnny was classy, well-kept, cunning and respected. That’s everything Tony felt like he wasn’t. Tony saw Johnny as a threat, not a snake. Tony knew his crew was more or less just two-bit con artists and hyperactive sociopaths with no foreshadowing skills. He knew NY only tolerated them because of financial purposes and out of respect for those who reigned before Tony did and not because they genuinely respected Tony. He knew his men were a glorified crew that was very impressionable. This becomes more evident when you see at Johnny’s house party that EVERYONE was there and genuinely having a great time and of course finally when he devilishly glares at Johnny from afar as his men are actually talking about current events after Johnny Sac ripped into them and basically told them to be useful lmfao. What’s funny is it seems like Johnny Sac WAS initially only there to gather intel, but soon saw Tony’s insecurities bleed through and started harping on that and influencing his crew more. The conflicting personalities seems like it could’ve genuinely ruined the whole thing until Johnny got sentenced and Phil stepped in. It seems like when Johnny moved to NJ and started playing on Tony’s insecurities in a way, that was the beginning of the end for him if buying that giant ass house in the first place wasn’t. Johnny started playing those games and swayed Tony’s crew so far off track that them wilding out now after Johnny inserted himself more kind of on behalf of NY and cross-mixing with NY more and more was the start of the end for the whole series I’d argue.
