Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t the dragon have magic resisting scales, this comes into why Frieren herself didn’t just deal with the dragon on her own, it’s because if she had, she probably would have destroyed its hoard(and the grimoire) with it. This is all to say that Stark didn’t have this issue because he doesn’t attack using magic but instead attacks with just sheer kinetic force.
Gotta love how Eisen - one of, if not the greatest living Warrior and member of the Heroes' Party that slayed the Demon King - hit Stark hard enough to scar him on pure reflex because he actually thought his student was going to kill him. I love the 'trope' of a student being so strong they almost accidentally kill their teacher, and the teacher tries to play it off all cool-like but internally their going: "I WASN'T HOLDING BACK AT ALL, I ALMOST FUCKIN DIED!!"
And that's the same eisen who got hit by a much bigger dragon thing and thought "Oh, they hit pretty hard." and dusting himself off. He thought stark with sparring equipment might harm him badly lol.
Stark is honestly my favorite character of the show. He's so... normal compared to everyone else. And yet, he easily killed a dragon with one hit- and that was BEFORE he got training from other warriors.
According to Frieren the only one who would have a chance to defeat Serie (the most powerful mage of all) would be Stark, but the problem with Stark is that he is a novice warrior without much experience in war... if he polished his skills more, he would surely be one of the most dangerous characters in the series. (although I doubt it will happen, Stark doesn't really like to fight, he only does it when someone else needs help)
The thing is, he always wanted to fight, but not for himself, he only fight serious when its for others, and thats the point, he needs to let it go of his past and strenght himself so that it never happened again. He just cant accept he is now strong because he was always told garbage of his dad, and never had the chance to prove him wrong
I think Frieren could definitely kill that dragon with ease but she let Fern handle it.... she was training her for the things that they will encounter on their way to Ende. That Fern could be able to imagine to defeat strong opponents... And that could explain Frieren smile when Fern exclaimed that she could kill Frieren. She was happy that Fern made such a progress.
Another angle would be the amount of power it would take to defeat the dragon in one shot would’ve destroyed the surrounding area including the loot they wanted.
That's something often overlooked: in many fantasy settings fighters use apparently mana to enhance their physical strength, speed, and endurance. This results in a vast gap in power levels between different individuals and it's not visible for the most part, as they don't have three skulls floating next to their name above their head... Now, speaking of real life, there's still a surprising mismatch in perceived and actual strength and I'd like to give examples I've seen: 1) A woman challenged a bodybuilder to a contest of strength and she won by a landslide! The task was to hold out a weight. For the bodybuilder, it was a puny weight, but the bet was about who could hold it in their outstretched arm for the longest! What she didn't tell him was that she was a waitress and served the huge mugs of beer at the Octoberfest in Munich, Germany! She was thus used to carry absurd weights (from the perspective of a woman) all day! 2) The next two examples involve the same people at the same martial arts club: I had a female colleague there, who was a bit over 5 ft 9 inches tall and frankly obese. She was however surprisingly strong and fast. Despite her excess weight, she could climb in climbing halls and would do so recreationally. This makes her quite a scary grappler together with her technical skills. I'm not particularly muscular, but almost 7ft tall and look like a frigging slenderman. My best asset is my hand speed when it comes to martial arts. I can slap a heavy bag at surprising speed and it still has a lot of mass behind it thanks to my size. This makes practice quite awkward, as I'm for one much taller and secondly the strongest person in the room... (though I'd lose against even a mere 6ft bodybuilder...). I was used to spar against that girl and I always had to hold back my strength for obvious reasons... Now, a new guy joined the club. He was almost 6ft tall and looked more muscular than me. So, I thought, finally, someone I don't need to hold back to... When he was supposed to use a heavy pad, which is usually used to practice kicks, my task was to punch it. Since I never had him as my partner, I decided to hold back like I did with the girl and then hit increasingly harder to see how far I could safely go... What happened? The first punch was enough to drive the pad into his face breaking his nose! However, I hit with the same strength that girl had no problems dealing with! 3) a few months later, he was sparring against the girl and since he was toller and as mentioned muscular, he thought that he could wrestle with her (basically going off script). It was such a ridiculously bad idea as she ragdolled him all over the place! She was built like a frigging bear and all he saw was that she was smaller and fat... Neither my laughter nor them going off-script was particularly appreciated by our teacher...
You're missing something HUGE: Fear in the story isn’t portrayed as a weakness but as a source of strength. Why, you ask, my sweet summer child? Because in the end, fear itself doesn’t matter-what matters are the actions you take in spite of it. Would you fear the dragon? Would you flee? Even when you have strength, you never truly know how strong you are until you’re tested. No one does. For someone as strong as Stark, the only way to test his strength is to take on challenges that would seem suicidal to others. And despite being rational, no matter how terrified he might be, he never runs away. Courage is what you missed.
I notice that people Iike to compare zenitsu with stark. I actually find that insulting to stark. For zenitsu, he’s cowardly except when he sleeps, which is basically escapism. Also he’s a simp and used for bad comic relief. For stark, he’s scared, but he is not cowardly. He is willing to attack his enemies head on after some motivation. And he doesn’t know how strong he is. It shows a lack of self confidence, but it shows his room to grow.
While I love the scene where Eisen hit Stark in both the anime and manga, I think the manga does it slightly better as we get to see the exact moment and reason Eisen hit Stark. In it Stark had only raised his arm while arguing with Eisen not intending to hit Eisen but still out of anger raising his arm and Eisen a warrior with no ability to read mana was able to feel and see the pure aura of Starks strength surrounding his arm to where he feared Stark and hit him with the strength he would a strong monster at his age since the presence of Starks strength was so menacing and it was so amazing to see the exchange take place
Yeah I think Frieren genuinely could have handled the dragon solo, but since she talked to Eisen she knew it would've been more beneficial for Stark to kill it, either for the future of the next generation of heroes or just for her entertainment
Stark has serious confidence issues. But considering how his father treated him, how he was raised in a warrior village where everything depends on streng and talent, and most importantly how he get his scar from Eisen, the most important person in his life, and thought the whole time it was because how much of a disappointment he was due to Eisen's horrible social skills. Frieren didn’t tell him the real reason either, so I think he still thinks that way. It is quite sad, actually...
I really wish they could have given him more cool scenes like when he fought the dragon, especially in the manga. I get the story is not about him but he is one of the main casts. He is supposed to be insanely strong but we hardly see that when he’s fighting. It’s only those random moments where we remember how strong he is.
It was said by Frieren that stark is the only one who (if polished his techniques) is able to defeat serie (the strongest mage), so we might see his potential grow as the series goes on
We do see it whenever he fights. it's just that the magic exam arc had Stark doing nothing while the other chars get to show off. I think we could get more cool moments with Stark in the next season
