Not the image I'd want for the company if I owned it. Even it was reasonable food it is overpriced. The peas were a processed pea colour, probably not made at the restaurant. Possibly not a good pickling vinegar. Seemed to be aimed at a quick table turnaround.

I didn't like the look of it at all, Greeno. I also didn't like the way all the waitering staff were loitering around the entrance. Reminded me of shopping in one of those big furniture stores where you feel like a prey animal in a cage of hyenas. Fair score, and really pleased to see that your subs have jumped up 👍
I'm with you on this. When I worked in the US and went into a store, it would drive me mad to be immediately assailed by shop assistants asking whether they could help. Totally unfair as they were trying to help but I just wanted to scream...if I want help I'll ask for it. Now, after 40 years in France, nothing short of a cardiac arrest will bring a shop assistant to your side... on a good day🧐

If a restaurant brings our mains whilst still eating our starters I’ll send the mains back . The best way to combat this kind of third rate service in British eateries is order one course at a time and give yourself a little breather after your starter.

A mate of mine is old friends with the owner here and they’ve known each other from when they were teenagers . We were walking past randomly one day and my mate asked one of the staff if the boss was in and to tell him my mate was there . He came out and was happy to see my mate as they hadn’t seen each other for years and he sat us down, I thought he was going to give us a free fish and chips but all we got was a coffee. Tight bar steward! Considering he’s charging twenty five quid a pop he’s bleedin rollin in it!
The starter platter looks a meal on its own, great review, my wife and have frequented this plaice (pun intended) as we are ‘Londoners’ we enjoyed… but it is a little pricey due to the Covent Garden position.
Yes, it's a sharing plate (and I did share ha ha!) - of course there is always a premium for central London locations, I just felt this was still pricey for what I got

The name Rock and Sole Plaice was a bit of a clue. As you said Greeno, a bit of a tourist trap. Average food sold for above average prices. I noticed that the waiting staff were hanging around the entrance, waiting to drag people in.

The moment your main was brought to the table , you know that ut us ot a decent eatery. Send the main back. No quibbles. If they get shirty, pay for what you and ask to speak to the manager. Cause a ruckus so that other customers get the gist of your complaint. As for the colab with Gary, great stuff. Now all you need to do is take the Phall challenge!
If I had been eating wth Mrs Greeno then I would have reacted differently, but when I am filming I just kind of show how it is and get on and review the food, warts and all. As for the Phaal challenge, gary's stiching me up now isn't he ha ha! It'll have to happen I guess!

£20 for fish and chips. Didn't hear any crunch from batter. Tinned peas. Half the starter uneaten. Appalling service with main brought too early. If the staff are hanging around outside the front door...why🤔 Once worked in a turkey abattoir with long lines of us preparing the birds under the watchful eye of countless managers (a bit like the waitresses). One day I stepped out of the line and stood stock still. A line manager rushed up, "what the F are you doing?" Quick as a rattlesnake I replied, "I'm practicing for when I'm a line manager". HR reprimanded me but I swear she giggled!
Someone earlier in the comments mentioned about the staff hanging around saying "if you've time to lean, you've time to clean" 😂 Overall this is one I would recmmend avaoiding, much better out there.

Only the "pirates earrings" looked good. The rest, not so much. They seem to think, hey, tourists will come here because of the history. That is true, just to say they were there, so they will always be busy and serve average food. That unfortunately is what tourism is, yikes. Platter, why does it have Parsnips on it. Or are they spring roll rejectes? Prawns in my opinion bloomin fabulous ( why at this point, we're you over loaded with main meal and assorted sides 🤔🤔) Thought the Haddock looked greasy. Chips old fashioned 😊mixed sizes. Pretty sure coleslaw was not a traditional side for a fish supper. ( the sight of the staff hanging around the front door 🤔🤔😟🙁☹️) It's not a gherkin 😳in a chippy it's a wally 🥒Cut pickled onion??? Just mean. £20 for Haddock and chips 💷quite cheap for Covent Garden, highway robbery any where else. It was a real mixed bag, I just felt the negatives far outweighed the positives. The prawns were a highlight though ! I do know of City Spice - maybe that's one to try sometime !

Hi Greeno - nice fair review and coming straight of the back with your collaboration with Gary couldn't asked for a better way to relax after work. The prices reflect the area and it all looks a bit beige for my liking. And I love fish and chips, but I've seen much better (Gary on his tour for example). Bringing your main out whilst still chowing on your starter is a bit poor.
It was good to see you with Gary recently and good to see you on your own. I thought the food looked OK but horrendously overpriced. I wouldn’t go there.
Up North we would consider that a stingy portion of chips 😂. Those mushy peas look identical to ones straight from a well known tin brand mushy peas. For that price I would expect home made mushy peas. Lol
If you get the chance check out my local pub, it's call the Chester Arms in Chester Street east Oxford, they do the best fish & chips, sumptuous Sunday roasts & a steak platter to die for, it's not stuffy or pretentious, tame staff who focus on quality food & beers, parking in local side streets, it is a secret gem, a destination establishment.

I'm a Londoner and every once in a while I get this stupid urge to try fish & chips again. I have never had a decent fish & chips ever. The battered fish is always ...alright but it's the soggy chips that always let it down. I got in late one evening and couldn't be arsed to cook us our tea so tried the new chippy just up the road. I had the battered roe. Lovely. But the chips were rank. It was like they were a day old. His shop's been taken over by another chippy.
I have been to the Rock and Sole Plaice. I had their haddock and chips with mushy peas. They are delicious and so are the pies. The pies are either homemade or ordered by their bakery.
Yes i totally agree with everything you said- sure its London so you expect to pay, but considering my dining out lunches cost £10...you can imagine how i would feel about £45( mind you i never eat that much for lunch!) Seems everywhere in Covent Garden is pricey......although their is a large cost for traveling up to Bradford or other Yorkshire places i have seen plenty of good £10 fish & chip reviews up their!....maybe its worth going back to a breakfast cafe and try a lunch their? Might be good value?
My dad own a fish and chip shop and people used to queue round the corner in Deptford he worked in fish and chips all his life and he retired when he was 50 and moved to Canada

I think saveloys started out as a London thing, but we definitely have them in Dorset. Not sure about the coleslaw though, never seen that at a chippy before!

I can get 2 large fish about 11 inches long 1 large chips, 2 large curry sauces and 1 large sausage for 19 pounds from my local chippy and they are lovely.

Welcome to the channel - seems many of Gary's subscribers want to see me endure the phaal - so I may just have to do it - will probably be a few weeks off though with existing travel planes etc.
The only fish and chip shop that I find to be the tastiest is East Park Chippy in East Hull East Yorkshire. But you can't beat going to a chip shop near the sea, especially Bridlington, at Brid Bay fisheries. You get loads mate 😜

The moment your main was brought to the table , you know that ut us ot a decent eatery. Send the main back. No quibbles. If they get shirty, pay for what you and ask to speak to the manager. Cause a ruckus so that other customers get the gist of your complaint.

If I had been eating wth Mrs Greeno then I would have reacted differently, but when I am filming I just kind of show how it is and get on and review the food, warts and all.

Tip for handling spicy food is to have a side of sliced banana. When your mouth gets too hot, take a slice and smear it around with your tongue, it cools it down like a dream. 👍

£20 for fish and chips. Didn't hear any crunch from batter. Tinned peas. Half the starter uneaten. Appalling service with main brought too early. If the staff are hanging around outside the front door...why🤔 Once worked in a turkey abattoir with long lines of us preparing the birds under the watchful eye of countless managers (a bit like the waitresses). One day I stepped out of the line and stood stock still. A line manager rushed up, "what the F are you doing?" Quick as a rattlesnake I replied, "I'm practicing for when I'm a line manager". HR reprimanded me but I swear she giggled!
Someone earlier in the comments mentioned about the staff hanging around saying "if you've time to lean, you've time to clean" 😂 Overall this is one I would recmmend avaoiding, much better out there.
The fish+chips looked 150 years old nevermind the actual chippy haha. Top review Greeno

100% a Tourist Trap! went here once in 2013 with my workmate to give it a try...we sat down took one look at the prices, got straight back up & went to the The Fryer's Delight 19 Theobalds Rd.👌👌👌

Only the "pirates earrings" looked good. The rest, not so much. They seem to think, hey, tourists will come here because of the history. That is true, just to say they were there, so they will always be busy and serve average food. That unfortunately is what tourism is, yikes. But, you gave it a fair go, and gave compliments (although not much to compliment) when you enjoyed something. Another great one, thanx Greeno.
I like to be fair - even in the owrst meal if something is decent I'll mention it :-)

Platter, why does it have Parsnips on it. Or are they spring roll rejectes? Prawns in my opinion bloomin fabulous ( why at this point, we're you over loaded with main meal and assorted sides 🤔🤔) Thought the Haddock looked greasy. Chips old fashioned 😊mixed sizes. Pretty sure coleslaw was not a traditional side for a fish supper. ( the sight of the staff hanging around the front door 🤔🤔😟🙁☹️) It's not a gherkin 😳in a chippy it's a wally 🥒Cut pickled onion??? Just mean. £20 for Haddock and chips 💷quite cheap for Covent Garden, highway robbery any where else. That's the trouble with the " outer towners " Us locals can't foot the whole bill for the upkeep of the Capital. Take care, seek out the bargains, they are there. It was a real mixed bag, I just felt the negatives far outweighed the positives. The prawns were a highlight though ! I do know of City Spice - maybe that's one to try sometime !

Hi Greeno - nice fair review and coming straight of the back with your collaboration with Gary couldn't asked for a better way to relax after work.
The prices reflect the area and it all looks a bit beige for my liking. And I love fish and chips, but I've seen much better (Gary on his tour for example).
Bringing your main out whilst still chowing on your starter is a bit poor.

Up North we would consider that a stingy portion of chips 😂. Those mushy peas look identical to ones straight from a well known tin brand mushy peas. For that price I would expect home made mushy peas. Lol

If you get the chance check out my local pub, it's call the Chester Arms in Chester Street east Oxford, they do the best fish & chips, sumptuous Sunday roasts & a steak platter to die for, it's not stuffy or pretentious, tame staff who focus on quality food & beers, parking in local side streets, it is a secret gem, a destination establishment.
Just had a look at that online, what a place - the steak platter looks divine!!
Nothing beats a good poutine.

I'm a Londoner and every once in a while I get this stupid urge to try fish & chips again. I have never had a decent fish & chips ever. The battered fish is always ...alright but it's the soggy chips that always let it down. I got in late one evening and couldn't be arsed to cook us our tea so tried the new chippy just up the road. I had the battered roe. Lovely. But the chips were rank. It was like they were a day old. His shop's been taken over by another chippy.
You could always just not order chips I suppose, get the fish, some mushy peas and a bread roll or similar? That could improve the experience for you?

I have been to the Rock and Sole Plaice. I had their haddock and chips with mushy peas. They are delicious and so are the pies. The pies are either homemade or ordered by their bakery.

Yes i totally agree with everything you said- sure its London so you expect to pay, but considering my dining out lunches cost £10...you can imagine how i would feel about £45( mind you i never eat that much for lunch!) Seems everywhere in Covent Garden is pricey......although their is a large cost for traveling up to Bradford or other Yorkshire places i have seen plenty of good £10 fish & chip reviews up their!....maybe its worth going back to a breakfast cafe and try a lunch their? Might be good value?
I do plan to head north again later in the year as time allows !
My dad own a fish and chip shop and people used to queue round the corner in Deptford he worked in fish and chips all his life and he retired when he was 50 and moved to Canada

There are a lot of great places to eat - some are pricey, but there are also hidden gems about!
Rotten Sole or Sock and Mole. Shocking they pass that off with some historical provenance! Much preferred the food you ate with Gary and Eats Jnr at the Indian. Keep em coming Greeno. You make having down time interesting. 😊

I think saveloys started out as a London thing, but we definitely have them in Dorset. Not sure about the coleslaw though, never seen that at a chippy before!

The only fish and chip shop that I find to be the tastiest is East Park Chippy in East Hull East Yorkshire.
But you can't beat going to a chip shop near the sea, especially Bridlington, at Brid Bay fisheries.
