At 6:39 you can see the flat (20 yards away )that I used to live in 40 years ago. Back then at the start of the rise of Covent Garden as a tourist attraction (200 yards away) this was just an unremarkable chip shop mainly frequented by people local to the area, no fancy frontage or tables outside, a basic chip shop menu and take away only 😄
Food was always good, 8/10 and reasonably priced. Can't speak for how good it is today , I've not eaten there for many many years as I no longer live in the area and every time I've passed by it's swarming with tourists. Glad to see they are still thriving BUT despite their longevity I'm not sure if they are the oldest chip shop in London ?

What made the saveloy exceptional in this place was the fact that they'd soak the saveloys in hot water to keep them succulent. The old owner used to point this out to people whenever he got the chance. He was a grumpy so and so but when he'd start to recognise you he'd soften a little. It was one of the staple places you went for lunch when you worked around there, usually the 3/4 days after you got paid. The rest of the month you were eating out of No.1 Cafe on Earlham street.

It's criminal to pour curry and gravy on a delicate white fish like cod or haddock. Salt and vinegar, lemon and/or tartare sauce only. The curry and gravy are for pouring over the chips, mushy peas for the side.
The saveloy was a perfect "breakwater" to keep the gravy juices away from the battered fish. Alan Partridge would not approve of your philistine approach to cuisine.

as a northerner i've never quite understood the gravy on fish thing we do up here, fish and gravy seems an odd combination, i will stick to the tried and tested mushy peas and fish

@@paulmilner8452 This is because it is not usually possible to stop the mushy peas contaminating part of the fish rendering the delicious crispy batter all soggy. At least for people who eat from plates.
The opportunity of using a large sausage as a breakwater has been lost here.

Have to agree, gravy was originally something used to disguise the taste of poor food. id rather taste the fish, maybe a little tartare, never gravy or curry sauce.
