The tea first / milk first thing came from the days of domestic service. Upstairs the family would use fine china / porcelain, which sometimes would shatter if hot tea was poured into it first, so milk was added first to temper the heat of the tea. Downstairs, domestic staff used clay mugs, so the tea could be added first with no danger of shattering...

So good of you Gary to give Rick another chance. The location and food looked stunning and this time the price ok.Exellent and very, fair review makes a change for one of Rick's establishments keep em coming pal

Very good review gary. It looks lovely there. Food and price excellent value. Glad you had a good experience. It’s great when you have had a good meal. Take care👍👍
Incredibly beautiful setting. Very jealous of you today, one of my favourite parts of the country. I used to travel a lot for work and got around a lot. Restaurant looked so nice. Don’t get around much now as I have a disabled partner and a crazy Boston terrier dog. Watching your channel has opened my world up a bit more for me again, thanks Gary and Son 🥰
Thank you Gail. It's truly beautiful isn't it so I'm really glad you liked it today. Take care and have a wonderful weekend. Best wishes to you and your crazy dog!!
That shows how long ago I went to Sandbanks (I live about 18 miles away) didn't know he had arrived! That food looked lovely and not overpriced, considering just a few yards away is one of the dearest roads in the world, houses wise that is! Hope you've done some more vids in the vicinity? 110,000 subs a few days before your 1 year Anniversary! Well done, sirs!
Tea first milk after.....that's how it's done on the tea plantations..... The reason milk was put in fist in the 18th Century was due to the tea cups being very delicate China but as time moved on and tea became more popular, the tea cups & mugs became thicker so it depended on prefrance
Arnold Bennet was born in 1867, in a house on Waterloo Road in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, the Ceramics capital of the world. No one else can make the China so thin and delicate as the the skilled people of the Potteries, but times have changed and most people want cheap far eastern rubbish not quality. These thicker tea cups and mugs are imported and are of poor quality, that's why most of the factories in the Potteries have now closed, theirs still a few but nothing like the thousands their used to be. I live now approximately 2 miles from where Arnold Bennet was born.
Hi Gary, really glad you and Rick are "mates" again! 😁. The location was fantastic and even though I can't eat fish, the dish looked absolutely fabulous and glad you enjoyed it. A bit surprised as well by the fact that Rick Stein had a North African dish on the menu, but that as well looked really good and with some good bread to mop it up with, even better. Another fantastic review, mate, and congrats on reaching 110K subs, it's a new milestone for the channel. Really happy for you and your son. The wife and I are headed out for dinner in a Michelin star restaurant tonight, first a few drinks, to celebrate our anniversary. The sun is shining and it's nice and hot, do not miss London at all. It's so relaxing down here and you're really able to disconnect. Have a wonderful rest of your day and enjoy the summer back home.
Nice one, Gary. First off eating in Sandbanks for that money, amazing, Rick has that right for my mind, it helps if you know, Sandbanks. I went there before it was famous back in the 70's so lovely. You really are good to change your food like this, the Gordon Bennett looked totally amazing, I could taste and smell it off my computer (it is apple, though, ha ha). The other dish looked incredible but not for me for breakfast a bit rich looking. You are a gem, Gary and I am addicted to your shows. You are going to have to put up with comments through them all, no order just RUclips chucks them at me. Keep it going, thank you as always, Gary!
Gary I have to say that the views was absolutely stunning.the breakfast it's definitely different which makes it intriguing.im glad you enjoyed it.positivity peace and love ♥️
Hi Gary, In 2010, I worked at the haven hotel sandbanks. Great location and you can see why the rich want to live there. Arnold Bennett omelette was the first thing I learned to cook at college, but you rarely see it on menus these days. Glad you enjoyed it, it’s definitely worth ordering. Thanks Alan 😊
When I settle down for dinner I will either check if Gary has a new video out or I will watch an old Rick Stein programme because I grew up watching him and its pure comfort. So to see this end on a high note has made my day!. Look at those subs increasing by 1K every time I look, and so well deserved.
I can sincerely say without a doubt... Gary always gives an honest and unbiased opinion. 👍That`s why I watch his channel. If people can`t work that out, there must be something wrong with them.
I live 3 miles from there and its a lovely area and you picked the correct day as not raining which is rare at the moment. Another good review and may go try there one day.
So glad you enjoyed Dorchester's , Sandbanks and Rick is in your good books . The breakfast , although not my first choice , looked well presented and you obviously approve , 10/10 for value , I was expecting twice the price !
Hi Gary, Two things I like about this channel 1. You are 100% genuine on your reviews, it comes across in how you express things and your mannerisms. 2. It doesn't matter where you are / what you review, there is no bias. It can be a single restaurant we've never heard of, or a large chain / well known celebrity chef. What the reviews seem to have shown though is that the name above the door doesn't matter, its about the staff on site and how they work (or don't work) as a team. You can 100% guarantee that the name above the door is not cooking your meal. It would be nice though if they had quality control across them to ensure consistency, as after all, its their reputation on the line. Customers can always choose to go somewhere else. Case in point - Jamie Oliver. What would be even better is if they went around randomly to their franchises and cooked in the kitchen every now and then, and as a customer you only knew after you had eaten.
do you think it would work doing joint reviews with fat andy and danny mae lan malin.😂😂saying let's put knacker ballbags away and garlic bread ol camera starving not getting out. Now then 😂
Thank you very much to say that, Tim, I agree with you. It is all about who is working in the kitchen and on the floor clearly on this occasion Rick has his finger on the pulse, maybe he needs to do that that’s fish and chip shop
Had to record the rest of my beloved golf to watch you😂 What a beautiful place, and the view. Milk second, you are right. Oh I would love that haddock dish. Not the spicy one. It looks as if Rick is doing you proud, thank goodness. Such an enjoyable show again Gary. Back to the golf now, Shane Lowry for the win. Once again what a wonderful view. Worth every penny.
I just love the way you enter into any of the reviewed restaurant with a clear mind, regardless of any previous poor reviews ! Great video once again ! The food really did look top notch 😃👍🇬🇧
Gary you are a very humble and nice man..the world will be a better place with more people like you..Rick stein should contact you for such praise to his restaurant
@0:48 Love the classic Silver Ferrari 308 GT passing you by Gary... Most will remember it as the car driven by Tom Selleck in the American TV Series Magnum P.I. 👍
Gary gives the most honest review of every establishment he visits. It doesn't matter who is the owner , celebrity or local chef . Thoroughly enjoy every review he posts . Thanks again m8.
Wow, I really enjoyed sharing that view with you, and the food was so interesting. I never had a dish of haddock and eggs but looked amazing. I will look for the recipe. Appreciated you inviting us to breakfast by the sea.
Well, there's an eye opener, normally if I see a celebrity chef diner,I keep walking to the cafe round the corner, but after watching your excellent review Gary, I think we might just stop off and give Rick another chance 😊😇👍
Wow wow wow! That looked amazing Gary. What a brill breakfast. Both of them. Rick deserved his 9/10. I’m glad cause after the padsto experience I wasn’t expecting much. You are always honest so I’m surprised you took flak from viewers saying you have something against him. A thing popped up on UT saying you earned $1900 a month. So what? Whose business is it? It’s not exactly a get rich quick scheme. Great as always. 👍
It was really good, Philip third time lucky. I’m gonna call Rick the postman as he delivered. Unfortunately, even on this video people are saying I’ve got paid to do it. I have seen that video it actually says 19,000 a month which would be lovely unfortunately not accurate. Please have a wonderful weekend and see you soon.
Nice Arnold Bennett Quotes: 1) "Your own mind is a sacred enclosure into which nothing harmful can enter except by your permission." 2) "It is easier to go down a hill than up, but the view is from the top." 3) "There can be no knowledge without emotion. We may be aware of a truth, yet until we have felt its force, it is not ours. To the cognition of the brain must be added the experience of the soul." 4) "The moment you're born you're done for." He wrote 34 novels, 7 volumes of short stories, and 13 plays, and a daily journal. He wrote realism for the general public. I guess Virgina Woolf knocked his writing because it was realism and not modernist writing. (I like Virgina Woolf, but if she did that, shame on her.) Knowing this, it is nice they named an omelette after him. It was his favorite omelette at the Savoy. I also had to look up Gordon Bennett. Location is great and food looks good.
I’m so pleased you’ve restored my faith in Rick Stein and yep those breakfasts looked fantastic as did location and price. The shakshuka looked really good - I order merguez sausage with it to make it a hearty breakfast at our local tin of sardines - I believe there’s one in Poole. Great review Gary - by the way it would be interesting to see/ hear about Customer Service if you ever need to comment on stuff - I see you are thinking about it.
I had a view like that at a very simple seafood place in Rockport, Massachusetts. The food was very good, but the view from our window side table made it an outstanding experience. Thanks for another enjoyable video!
Not related to this video but you made me cook a full Sunday roast (on a Saturday, cheeky I know). Never tried to make English food before but it came out great! Even the Yorkshire puds! Thanks again for your genuine good-hearted content!
Hi Gary and Mr Cameraman Well our Rick is a very Lucky man that your giving him another bite at the cherry. Well this place looks lovely inside, but the breakfast opening hours are a bit limited at only 8-30am to 10-30am. That first dish you had (Omelette Arnold Bennett) looked amazing, to which not sure if you know but Arnold Bennett was an English novelist who wrote over 30 books, and a number of short plays. When in London Bennett liked to eat at the Savoy Hotel's Grill. He often ate an omelette made with smoked haddock, and this has become known as the Omelette Arnold Bennett. The Omelette Arnold Bennett has remained a Savoy standard dish ever since. My wife actually has one of his Books called 'Anna and the five towns' Your second dish the Shakshuka (of i believe Tunisian origin) certainly seemed to get your thumbs up, but it may just be me, but im not a pepper and spices person for breakfast, but who knows i could try it and change my mind instantly. Score wise i agree 9 was fair, especially as there was enough for two. Chris.
I really appreciate your comment Chris, I did not know a lot of this so much appreciated as always. I think the Shakshuka was a little too sloppy in all honesty but that's fine because the Arnold Bennett nailed it, thank you for watching as always
Rick Stein again? You're a glutton for punishment Gary. 😂 What a beautiful location and restaurant. Ooooh I love a good Arnold Bennett omelette but they are very hard to find. Glad to see the food looks and tastes a lot nicer than your previous Rick Stein experience.
Nice review Gary I love the fact your videos are from all over the country, its a great advert for visiting and checking out the area and the places you have dined!
@@rodmitchell8576 It was milk first before China cups were made or imported, to stop the clay cups from breaking from the hot water. But since Chinaware was introduced in the UK, it didn't really matter which one you poured in first. Although I agree with Gary, I'd like to see how dark my tea is and add milk accordingly.
Looks good! I lived in Bournemouth for 35 years before I moved to Turkey. If you do go to Sandbanks, nice beach but busy, drive a few hundred metres up the road and take the 10 minute car ferry to Studland and Shell bay beach. Its stunning.
At the risk of sounding pedantic Poole Bay is the open sea on the other side of Sandbanks, Poole harbour is what he was overlooking, as a local I'd like to claim it as the biggest but its 2nd to Sydney.
@@DerrickWhittle-mm7jz Over a 100 miles of coastline in there, 6 islands ( 1 with a castle ) a quay and no end of jetties and marinas...its Poole harbour, 2nd biggest in the world.
Only found your channel very recently but I have to say I really enjoy watching a genuine honest review from a real person plus cameraman 😮loved each video so far thank you for appearing on my feed keep up the great work ❤
I love your reviews Gary, you are so honest so please don’t change I started off watching another Chanel but was so fed up of the interruptions for selfies and the food he was reviewing that I had to look for another reviewer and came across you 🙌🏻🙌🏻👍👍 The food you review is just the sort of food I miss so much now that I live in Australia, it give me great pleasure to see you eating it and describing the taste 😍😍
I normally don't comment. I'm from Denmark and will probably never visit many of the restaurants you visit, but love your style, your OH WOW when you like it. I also get a real sense of the country, the 'not fancy ' food , the scenery. Great work to you and the guy behind the camera.
I have shakshuka at a Yemeni restaurant at least once a month. Yours looked fantastic. As always, your video was delightful to watch. Thank you for always "giving it a go" and producing excellent content.
I didn't notice the sign outside was dropping off and the chef was trying to hold it up as well as cook 😂. Don't worry, Lisa, I'm leaving the stage before I get booed off! 👍
Takes me back years. We used to go to Bournemouth for our holibobs. Stayed without fail at The Caledonian. Poole, Poole pottery, sandbanks thanks for bringing these happy memories to me
Firstly I would like to just say that Ive been following Gary for quite some time now, I find his reviews completely unbiased with absolutely no hidden agenda and as he says in this video, he bases his review on what he is offered and served, nothing else regardless of celeb eateries, chains or small independents, He is honest, has a nice bit of light hearted patter and is fair and this is why myself and 1000's of others keep coming back, Cameraman does a fantastic job too. Now regarding this review I am so glad you had a great experience at Rick Steins, The location is perfect, the Restaurant is perfect and more importantly that food looked perfect, I was drooling at the sight of both of those dishes and for what you got quality and quantity wise I think price wise was pretty good......not too sure about full English (if its just one portion of each item then that is very expensive) Overall a great review and great to see Rick back in the good books lol, cheers Gav
I'm happy you finally got a great meal at one of Rick's places! It did look amazing. And regards to the tea situation i agree with you Gary. Tea first then you can add milk as you like it. Everyone's different, i like a splash of milk, tea or coffee, no sugar, but that's just me.
Gary thanks for the review, the last time we visited sandbanks was many years ago, the only place we found to eat was the Haven Hotel which in those days was upmarket. Its nice to see Rick Steins restaurant gives people the chance for some fine dining, the location was an old gift shop 1960
Gary, your humour is infectious, I found myself laughing out loud several times with this review. Kudos to the cameraman for those lovely establishing shots. That food looked great, and not a bad price, especially with those views, could sit there all day sipping tea and looking out that window. Thank you as always for a relaxing and fun video.
I’m really pleased you enjoyed the video and I appreciate your comment regarding my son the cameraman. The food was very good and I thought for the location it wasn’t expensive at all. I hope you have a wonderful Sunday.
Nice to see you finish on a high note with Mr. Stein, Gary. My late wife and I always loved Sandbanks and Poole Harbour. (The tablecloth was a nice touch!).
Yayy! Could tell you were really enjoying that, it looked delicious and not too badly priced given location. Well done Gary for persevering 😊 Already looking forward to the next one 😊
Hi Gary, beautiful location & your son captured wonderful shots there at the start especially. So, Rick Stein again... Your food review nemesis! 😅 I am very glad that this meal was so much better! On-screen it looked very tasty. As always, your honest & fair description of the meal, along with the location is absolutely spot on. I'd like to try this place myself. All the best to you both. 💙
I apologise to you Erin. And I hope you are keeping well 'Down Under'. I lived in Perth WA, for a a few years, many years ago and found all you 'Aussies' so welcoming. You take care. S
@@sharoncox4776 No worries at all Sharon & thanks for your message. To be honest, I did find your reply the other day a little odd, but it's all good. So glad you enjoyed Dorchester's , Sandbanks and Rick is in your good books . The breakfast , although not my first choice , looked well presented and you obviously approve , 10/10 for value , I was expecting twice the price !
The hardest working man on RUclips. Looking forward to your review. Have a great day everyone.
Oh well that's very kind of you Bino thank you
Real youtube right here. No BS, no hype, just straight to the content.
Hi Gary,
Two things I like about this channel
Had to record the rest of my beloved golf to watch you😂
What a beautiful place, and the view.
Who is winning Ann? Thank you so much and glad you agree that tea goes in first... of course it does!
I just love the way you enter into any of the reviewed restaurant with a clear mind, regardless of any previous poor reviews ! Great video once again ! The food really did look top notch 😃👍🇬🇧
Thank you, that's very kind and it was excellent
So so good, wish I lived near there, lovely to see how much you enjoyed and appreciated the food
I was really pleased with the food that was on offer on this occasion and the location as well, Denise
Gary , you should become a postman , because you ALWAYS deliver !!!!
Lol very good thank you
Gary you are a very humble and nice man..the world will be a better place with more people like you..Rick stein should contact you for such praise to his restaurant
That is a lovely comment, and thank you very much
@0:48 Love the classic Silver Ferrari 308 GT passing you by Gary... Most will remember it as the car driven by Tom Selleck in the American TV Series Magnum P.I. 👍
I absolutely missed that, Rick I’m going to have to rewatch as I love that car
@@GaryEats 👌👍
Gary, you are a joy to watch, mate! That's why you have all those subscribers. Keep going. Best Wishes from Dublin via Spain, Rob
Thank you very much, Rob. I appreciate you watching from Dublin or Spain 🇪🇸🇮🇪
Gary gives the most honest review of every establishment he visits. It doesn't matter who is the owner , celebrity or local chef . Thoroughly enjoy every review he posts . Thanks again m8.
Thank you my friend, that means a lot
Wow, I really enjoyed sharing that view with you, and the food was so interesting. I never had a dish of haddock and eggs but looked amazing. I will look for the recipe. Appreciated you inviting us to breakfast by the sea.
Appreciate that, have a great weekend
Well, there's an eye opener, normally if I see a celebrity chef diner,I keep walking to the cafe round the corner, but after watching your excellent review Gary, I think we might just stop off and give Rick another chance 😊😇👍
I have to say, Nigel I was really pleasantly surprised
Lovely words, especially the first quote.
Thanks for this information, great quotes x
Thank you so much for sharing this!!
Excellent comment, thanks.
"You can lead a horse to water, but a pencil must be lead" Stan Laurel.
Thank you ever so much Carol. I will do in the future, take care
I had a view like that at a very simple seafood place in Rockport, Massachusetts. The food was very good, but the view from our window side table made it an outstanding experience. Thanks for another enjoyable video!
I have never found your reviews to be anything but honest Gary.
That’s very kind and appreciated thank you very much
I regard you as a jolly, optimistic gentleman who receives his food with grace even if it was a t..d on the plate.lovely person you are Gary.
Thank you so much Gail, you're ever so kind
Rick got the nod you was. turning up.🤣🤣🤣
Lol very funny John
Not related to this video but you made me cook a full Sunday roast (on a Saturday, cheeky I know). Never tried to make English food before but it came out great! Even the Yorkshire puds! Thanks again for your genuine good-hearted content!
That is absolutely fantastic to hear. Well done.
Hi Gary and Mr Cameraman
Well our Rick is a very Lucky man that your giving him another bite at the cherry.
My wife actually has one of his Books called 'Anna and the five towns'
Your second dish the Shakshuka (of i believe Tunisian origin) certainly seemed to get your thumbs up, but it may just be me, but im not a pepper and spices person for breakfast, but who knows i could try it and change my mind instantly.
Score wise i agree 9 was fair, especially as there was enough for two.
Chris.
I have read most of Bennett's novels, a really good read especially if you're a Midlander like me.
@@VickyRussell-122 Hi Vicky, yes my wife loves then too,
Last time! Really really good though
stunning food and views...
Completely agree Mark, different level
Nice review Gary I love the fact your videos are from all over the country, its a great advert for visiting and checking out the area and the places you have dined!
That is very kind to say thank you very much Bobby
As always, a fantastic video filled with warmth and joy 😃
That’s very kind to say thank you
Agree Gary, tea in first and then just a splash of milk.
Delicious Rod
@@rodmitchell8576 It was milk first before China cups were made or imported, to stop the clay cups from breaking from the hot water. But since Chinaware was introduced in the UK, it didn't really matter which one you poured in first. Although I agree with Gary, I'd like to see how dark my tea is and add milk accordingly.
No milk with tea or coffee! Herbal tea and black coffee! It's the way forward!
@@SzTz100 Can you tell me where China Ware was introduced from.
Tribute to Rick - Oh Ricky, you're so fine. You're so fine you blow my mind, hey Ricky. what a pity you don't understand . Don't break my heart, Ricky
Lol mad as a hatter Tim
As always you were a gracious customer giving credit where it was due .
Thank you Catherine
I think that's a great trait Gary has. He's pleasant and considerate of staff and other customers wherever he goes.
Thank you
Wow that looked delicious, enjoyable video Gary!
Thank you very much, Edward. It’s really appreciated.
Looks good! I lived in Bournemouth for 35 years before I moved to Turkey. If you do go to Sandbanks, nice beach but busy, drive a few hundred metres up the road and take the 10 minute car ferry to Studland and Shell bay beach. Its stunning.
This was very impressive
Estuary? How very dare you! Poole Bay is a natural harbour, the biggest in the world! Estuary indeed….😂
2nd biggest.
Lol my apologies Ken
Sydney Harbour is actually the biggest natural harbour in the world
At the risk of sounding pedantic Poole Bay is the open sea on the other side of Sandbanks, Poole harbour is what he was overlooking, as a local I'd like to claim it as the biggest but its 2nd to Sydney.
Food review and Geography lessons all in one😂
Gary, Gary, Gary. its a Harbour!
Yes yes!
Didt see any peers or jetties to make it a harbour?
@@DerrickWhittle-mm7jz Over a 100 miles of coastline in there, 6 islands ( 1 with a castle ) a quay and no end of jetties and marinas...its Poole harbour, 2nd biggest in the world.
Peers ? as in Lords 🤔
@@JLGadgetguy26 sorry piears
Great review as always Gary. Your mate Rick has redeemed himself- food looks fantastic. Keep up the superb videos mate and varied content.

That is very kind to say, Sue thank you very much. I really appreciate you watching and commenting and so does my son the cameraman. ❤️
Outstanding again Gary, every video is 10/10. You’re by far my favourite RUclipsr, great, great work. Keep at it.
Thanks, will do!

Thank you very much Caroline. Rick is now known as the postman as he finally delivered.
Hi ya Gary. Fabulous review and breathtaking scenery. Please do a critique on Turkish breakfast. It's out of this world. Cheers
I will next year 👍👍
I love your reviews Gary, you are so honest so please don’t change
I started off watching another Chanel but was so fed up of the interruptions for selfies and the food he was reviewing that I had to look for another reviewer and came across you
🙌🏻🙌🏻👍👍
The food you review is just the sort of food I miss so much now that I live in Australia, it give me great pleasure to see you eating it and describing the taste 😍😍
Thank you very much Sue, you're very kind
Both those breakfasts would put a smile on my face they looked absolutely delicious. For me this is a most definite 10.
That is a great score, Colin. Thank you.
I normally don't comment. I'm from Denmark and will probably never visit many of the restaurants you visit, but love your style, your OH WOW when you like it. I also get a real sense of the country, the 'not fancy ' food , the scenery. Great work to you and the guy behind the camera.
That is a lovely comment to make thank you very much for watching all the way from Denmark 🇩🇰
I have shakshuka at a Yemeni restaurant at least once a month. Yours looked fantastic.
As always, your video was delightful to watch. Thank you for always "giving it a go" and producing excellent content.
Awesome! Thank you so much
You keep it real and simple. That's what we like about you.. Thank you for the food tour. Well done friend ! Jim and Harriet
Thank you very much, Jim and Harriet
The smoked haddock dish looked wonderful. Living in Madrid, I do miss smoked haddock. Thank you for a great review.
Thanks for watching!
You have the dedication of the chef or cook in the kitchen whom upholds rick steins name ,well done to that guy .
I didn't notice the sign outside was dropping off and the chef was trying to hold it up as well as cook 😂.
Don't worry, Lisa, I'm leaving the stage before I get booed off!
👍
I agree with you, Lisa. On this occasion the chefs done a great job 👌
The location is indeed beautiful. Makes/adds to the meal. 🥘 😊
The location was wonderful and on this occasion, so was the food
Takes me back years. We used to go to Bournemouth for our holibobs. Stayed without fail at The Caledonian. Poole, Poole pottery, sandbanks thanks for bringing these happy memories to me
I’m really pleased this bought you back some wonderful memories, John
Thank you much for this Gav. You wouldn't believe the amount of stick that I got on the other review so this means a lot!
I'm happy you finally got a great meal at one of Rick's places! It did look amazing. And regards to the tea situation i agree with you Gary. Tea first then you can add milk as you like it. Everyone's different, i like a splash of milk, tea or coffee, no sugar, but that's just me.
I really liked both breakfast and I thought the location was outstanding so well done on this occasion to Rick
Gary thanks for the review, the last time we visited sandbanks was many years ago, the only place we found to eat was the Haven Hotel which in those days was upmarket. Its nice to see Rick Steins restaurant gives people the chance for some fine dining, the location was an old gift shop 1960
I really appreciate that, have a lovely week
