Thank you for your history telling stories. As a Belgian it is very interesting to listen to your stories. A thankful, big warm hug from the other side of the Northsea 🤗❤
Fish and chips every Friday growing up for me but chips were never the same once they banned the newspaper wrap 😂. Enjoyed both your histories so far. I always love hearing about the history of nursery rhymes, I’m sure a lot of them are from Victorian times. My great Aunt used to sing them to me over 60 years ago now. I bet I’ve forgotten more than I can remember. She was a proper Victorian even down to her bloomers. 😊
A popular thing for sure! Have some good subjects on the way, also speaking to the pankhurst centre in Manchester who are allowing me access. So that will be good. Victorians had a lot right.. plenty wrong though 😂
Growing up as a Catholic, we used to refrain from eating meat on a Friday, due to good Friday. therefore only eating fish on Fridays. School dinners were always fish and chips. 😮 Very interesting. Thanks for this documentary on fish and chips.
Thoroughly enjoyed your vlog on the history of Fish and chips. Well done you! One of my friends mum is Japanese and always steamed white fish on a Friday with soya sauce and chop sticks! Making me feel hungry the Crispy batter of Cod and Chips! Yummy! 😊 Parsley’s eye is looking better too! 😊
Enjoyed this doc, being catholic & having a grandfather from London had fish and chips every Friday growing up. As I live by the ocean in Nova Scotia Canada we enjoy certain restaurants that have fish & chips ( not fish and fries lol). Salt & vinegar!
i am a 87 year old i well remember as a child eating my fish and chips out of a wraping of newspaper and when it was all gone i used to suck the vineger soaked paper (oh what joy) ,didnt do me any harm ..
Here in Canada they all seem to serve it with Tartar sauce which I love, though I've once had a place that did a dry rub... I definitely wanna try Salt n Vinegar, Mushy peas, and curry dip if I ever visit the UK
Great documentary! We do order the occasional fish and chips here in Michigan, USA but it’s certainly not what we enjoyed on our recent trip to the UK/Ireland. I like a dash of hot sauce or tartar sauce with the fish and prefer brown gravy 😳 with the fries (chips) but I have been known to splash a bit of wine vinegar on the fries from time to time. Now, just to mix it up, I will absolutely dump some ketchup on that plate for fry dipping. lol, gotta love the ketchup shoutout though in your vlog.
There’s A LOT I had to leave out. Go past 15-20 minute format, sadly people drop out lol. Bradford snuck in as it kinda had most shops in the country at that period 😂
We use to take plates to our chippy he would put them in warmer while we waited ,this usually happened Friday but now it’s expensive a fish supper born and bread in Manchester ❤
Good Doc. Look into Antoine Parmentier for the transition of the potato from animal feed to a peasant staple. Also the cooking medium from tallow to veg oil
Who knew? Thanks for a very interesting history. But what happened to the mushy peas that went with fish and chips back in the day in the north of England? Do people not eat those these days?
To keep it to a 15-20 minute format.. much couldn’t be added from scripts lol. Too long, people switch off sadly 😂 mushy peas very acquired taste these days. Very southern thing usually 😂
Ok, that’s really weird then!! To be fair.. RUclips not been kind to me. My subscribers keep “unsubscribing” and they don’t know about it! Hopefully ok now 👍🏻
Not for me no Tartar sauce or curry sauce. I like Cod OR Haddock with Chips & Mushy Peas. Proper brewed vinegar like Sarsons not that non brewed stuff & Salt. I remember Remember going in chippy's in the 60s as a kid it seemed much better than now The chips seemed more crispy not soggy & fish crispy coated tasted better when fried back then. Must be these modern Oils used now instead of beef dripping

One day I will make the pilgrimage to the UK and have some true fish and chips. For now, I will enjoy fresh Calabash fried fish from the coast of North Carolina with hush puppies. I plan to visit my ancestral home in County Cork as well. Also, a fluffy baked potato would be great as a side with fried cod. Must be my Irish blood, because I can eat potatoes any way but raw. Each St. Patrick’s day (also my son’s middle name) I make shepherds pie (with lamb!) or cottage pie and a side of bubble and squeak. The farts afterwards are horrible.
If you do come over and want a authentic fish and chips , don't go to a restaurant, go to a actual. Chippy, you'll find them more authentic and better tasting
@@da90sReAlvloc I’ve always wanted to get some of the fried drippings that accumulate after frying all the fish. Can’t remember what the term is, but it sounds delicious.

Love tartar sauce with my fish and chips or no sauce at all if we’ll seasoned. Sorry, have to agree with you on the curry sauce and brown gravy.
