I just spent an hour watching a documentary about a meal I’ve never had, from a country I’ve never visited... and yet I found it thoroughly entertaining and educational. I absolutely enjoyed this.

Cecil Rhodes (Rhodesia) once said :- 'Just remember that being born British you have just won first prize in the lottery of life'. If you are saying you have never had fish (cod for me) and chips in your whole life I think Mr Rhodes was right. It was the food that drove the industrail revolution, was a major factor in winning two world wars (it wasn't rationed) and along with vinegar, the humble pickled onion and pickled gherkin still fills millions of bellys to this day. OK, I'll add tomato sauce if I must. Drop of tartar sauce, crusty bread and butter. I'll pray to Demeter that your country needs her. Poor, poor chap.

I have been all around the world and i can tell you, nothing comes close to having fish and chips in the UK, everywhere else does a poor imitation, you should come and try for yourself !

You absolutely must have some fish and chips. For those n NZ, I can personally recommend the fish restaurant on the quay in Queenstown and I can recommend red snapper and chips! Thank you, New Zealand.

What an absolutely wonderful documentary! Towards the end I found myself becoming rather emotional.
All the skills and knowledge coming together. And the enthusiasm (dare I say love) for what they were doing. What a great bunch of people, one and all.
    Well done and thank you!

Here in Phoenix Arizona, a restaurateur brought three Irish buildings to reassemble into a Restaurant. The main building was a two story structure with the pub on the lower level. The office and staff areas were on the upper floor. A second building was much more simple and when attached to the pain pub housed the kitchens. A final utility building more like a shed provided storage. Every piece was numbered and shipped to be reassembled by local craftsmen. The main pub had an authentic thatched roof created on site by Irish craftsmen. The interior was everything you expect in a 100 year old pub. Many considered this unrealistic excess. Others appreciated it for what it was; a glimpse into a time now gone. The local building officials would have nothing of the thatching citing fire hazard. In response a complete fireproof roof was installed and then the thatching reeds were authentically installed. All the reed bundles were soaked in a fire retardant solution and tested to the satisfaction of the local authorities. Nothing better than a rainy winter afternoon with the wonderful smells and sounds of a pub. A bit of music completed the atmosphere on Saturdays. Thanks for allowing us Yanks a peek into your lives.

This took me back to the tiny fish and chip place around the corner from my elementary school. The tiles and fish and chips wrapped in newspaper. It stayed hot until we brought it back to school to eat. Great memories.

Outstanding effort! This reminds me of a "Time Team" episode where they showed how people in 1000 BC baked salmon encased in flour over hot coals in a pit. This indicates to me that the idea of a fish fry is probably a lot old er then we think! Potatoes of course are a new world vegetable and would have come later. But the idea of fast food goes back to the Greeks and their Gyros, and food served in the Roman Agora!

"Oh look mom" we're eating chips / aka: fries out of a rusted out metal pail!!
Gee, I wonder if everybody is caught up on their tetanus shot. (No haters, please. Just a little 'tongue and cheek' comment).
As for the toilet: nicknamed 'Turbo Flush' -- gee I feel safe around that, too. In America one of the reasons why we had to stop using the 'Turbo Flushes' wasn't b/c it, wasn't efficient (as one can see). It was precisely b/c it's uber efficiency created a mini earthquake effect and loosened tiles and mortar surrounding the toilet base beneath. The flushing action was a little too strong for the floor's stability.
Great historic documentary. Fantastic bit of storytelling. Looking forward to more docs.

What on earth was that Charlie trying to do, he moaned about everything. Dan Cruickshank can be very critical at times but I got fed up with Charlie's complete lack of enthusiasm
.'Underestimated the scale of the challenge' - 'Seriously telling me this was a fish and chip van' - 'smoke comes straight up into your face'. However as he liked corrugated iron, I'll let him off.
