Oh my: Just two months before filming of this programme began, my husband and I brought my 85-year-old father -- the most committed railfan I ever knew -- on his "last hurrah" trip back to Britain. In November 2010, we three rode the Settle-Carlisle line, his favourite, on just such a wintry day as George filmed, and I treasure my dad getting to chat with various members of crew and stations along the route about his love of trains and this beautiful countryside. Happy happy memories, and a brilliant build!
I don't know why the planning commission doesn't allow their own architects to work with these new owners who buy these buildings for instance work and help them draw up plans that would be acceptable instead of folks drawing up their own plans that get rejected all the time. It just makes no sense that they haven't come up with a system folks can approach them and work towards a more effective system than the one they have been working with for decades and decades that only seems to cause grief and heartache to folks who venture out on such projects. The money time and frustration that folks have to endure is completely unnecessary as far as I'm concerned. Where not living in the 15oo's anymore we're suppose to be living in modern times aren't we? smh.
This is one of my favourite episodes. Such a beautiful restoration. And such a sweet couple.
I live where no rails were built, though the locale was settled by in the mid- to late-1800's.
Super-Southern, desert Utah is so thoroughly Savage? Insular? Parochial? The entire approach & history of management is savage.
George makes a wonderful host for this series! He has such grace and kindness with all concerned. Thank you so much!

My favorite episode EVER
I am always fascinated and the passion of the individuals who take on these restoration projects. But equally amazed that anyone would take these projects on given the arcane, obstuctionistic, bureaucratic and territorial rulings of the planning versus conservation offices. I don't really think they want to save these structures. Too much lip service. Those officers just want a job. But the persistence of the people who are so invested the continue despite these obstacles is absolutely awesome. Plus George is such an invested host. Love him.

Yes!! I'm younger then them and I bought a one floor home....no stairs for me!!
Elevators are very expensive.
Lift / elevator installed - it was always part of the plan.
I love the way they bring in all the skilled craftsman! This couple's passion for the railway and then the tower is just amazing. If we have more people who were willing to "gladly" give so much of their assets and life to a great project would transform the world. Thank you George. This one made me cry. :)

They have been an elderly couple in 2011, while restauration. I wonder how they will come along with all the stairs now in their 80‘s.

Wonderful restoration. Surprised planning commission let them do almost all they wanted to do. Luckily this building wasnt in Scotland.
Im always surprised that someone wants an old building to make it modern.

It is a beautiful restoration and it is wonderful for people with such a passion for trains to be able to buy and restore this building. My only concern is that most windows cannot be opened apart from those in the new extension. I know this is northern England but still when it's warm outside, it's nice to be able to have a breeze in your home.
We have heat-recovery ventilation so the windows stay closed. For fresh air galore we pop up to the roof.

I do too. He is just adorable and I love his voice and accent. I listen to these videos when I go to sleep because his voice is so soothing. He needs to record some affirmations to listen to.
George separated from his wife, but shares the care with care regarding their children I read it

Great now all you have to do is get the local council to stop putting such restrictive building codes so these buildings can be fixed at a reasonable price. I guess they really actually don't care and this is how the council shows that it cares.
It's a lovely building but all that uncovered glass at the front entrance makes walking around in only your knickers a Settle peep show.

June 2011. Never gets old to watching... great job George, as always. The George staircase is so smart. It's great that there is a planning commission, because many people would buy these buildings/homes and paint them pink or turn them into a modern bit of junk...but can be frustrating waiting and waiting for decisions. Needs an elevator/lift, being in their 80's now. Little kitchen. The roof top would have been wonderful during "lock down". Great restoration.

What a fabulous building. Love it. Only thing I don't really get is the fire escape on that side. I think it would have been less disturbing on the other side along the new extension. Then it would have been shorter too due to the hill side. Although the material en design used suit the building in a way.

Britian railway in India also changed our entire countries situation, as evrything every damn thing were looted and transported from all over country for THE GREAT BRITAIN development.
I'm like the wife Pat, I really don't want to be standing on a glass floor you can see through; and the Narrator is bouncing on it which perpetuate the situation even more. The finish is product absolutely beautiful.

Imagine the pension the dude's on...
Bungalow is more practical because as the senior ages kick in so does the impractical stairs for aging joints 👴.
Using stairs can keep seniors agile and more fit. I may not be as fast I used to be but I can still walk up the six flights of stairs to get into my flat.

Unbelievable. I wouldn’t even think of trying to turn something that ugly and nasty into a home.. it’s amazing what money can help you achieve. To bad more people don’t have that kind of money and of course vision as to what it could become.. it’s so nice
A lot of hard work.
They did a great job,but I see some things that I didn't care for. The blue stairs stuck out like a sore thumb I thought. Blue doesn't match the decor of the room. And seeing the underneath of the stairs going to the upper level....ugh! And glass going up the stairs instead of a rail.....but that's just me. They're happy,so I'm happy for them

A horrible space for a “home”. So English,not even started and there’s already an extension 🤦🏻♀️At their age,they seem like they haven’t lived an action live…
