  • I videotaped this off TV around 1981. This report shows the Seattle punk scene at that time including clips of the Fartz, RPA, Visible Targets, and many interviews including John Bigley, Nicki, the Refuzors, etc. You see the Gorilla Room, Wrex and a fashion show at the Showbox.

Respond to this video... I'm the guy at the beginning of the Showbox footage jumping to The Fartz. Was this The International Punk Expolosion Show? That was my first hardcore show, in April of 1981. I was 20 going on 30. I came home from that show inspired to do a fanzine, and one month later I published the first issue of PUNK LUST. R.I.P. Nicki, you were rad!

2nd Time Around was such an awesome place to get music. Loved the U District Street Fairs, and be able to hunt for cheap music there and Cellophane Square.

Good depiction of Seattle scene around 81 and how people reacted to punk those days... But how these slightly older dudes described punk, its relation to new wave, politics etc. is just bogus. Anyway, fun to watch.

You can say the first real punks were the Kinks. But then again, who influenced them? Link Wray? Duane Eddy? Dick Dale? Big Bill Broonzy? How about Sister Rosetta Tharp? You're durn tootin' it wasn't new.

a whole new concept in music and fashion? wow is this guy late to the party! to put it in perspective Sid Vicious died two years earlier and the Ramones first album was 5 years old at the time of this report and played Aberdeen a year after that album came out.

@MrWilum oops, 29 going on 30. Man, a long time ago. I turned sixty this year, but if I was in that crowd this very moment I'd be acting just the same. Punk is STILL so rad and so real. Makes me want to do a new issue of Lust.

Ze Whiz Kidz were a local troupe of glam drag artists/musicians. Tomata Du Plenty was one of the founders.

I think punk roots are in NYC. Think Patti Smith, Jayne County, NY Dolls, Iggy, The Ramnes, … Just saying. Lived in Seattle back then. This was awesome to see. Thanks for posting.

New wave and punk are not synonymous. I heard it described once back in The 80s. Punk Rock is a bunch of angry young people who picked up instruments and beat the hell out of them. New Wave is when Punk Rockers actually learned how to play those instruments. In reality New Wave as music is the progression of disco, while the look is the progression of Punk Rock. Saying they are the same is typical of any generation where people over 30 would just say “it all sounds the same to me!” True even for today.
