Can't wait to give this a try. My local crochet club has a request for a large bag full of Men's winter hats. This will be perfect . Thank You for such a great design.
I really liked this pattern, but I got SO confused with the measurements and the crochet hook size. I just HAD to do some in-depth research on this. I hope this helps clarify some others who feels the same way as I did, without having to search through all of the useful comments below. Like how many others pointed out in the comments, the end-result length becoming EXTREMELY long, with her in the video mentioning "6mm crochet hook", having 56 chains (or 66 chains to fold the end; the word "brim", to me, is a visor-like part, so I won't use that word) -- all did not quite make sense to me. She also mentions the beanie to have approximately 21-inches circumference, which means the width of the beanie we see there is like 10.5 inches, which looks slightly shorter than the length (from top to rim), which looks kind of like 11.5-12 inches.. I searched for that specific yarn she used. It's a number 4 medium worsted yarn of "knitting Gauge: 20 sts in Stockinette Stitch = 4 inches (10 cm) with a 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) knitting needle". In the video she says she used a 6mm-crochet hook. However, there was no way her gauge will look like that with a 6mm crochet hook. Thus, I believe she misspoke having used a U.S.G-6(4mm; Boye brand 4.25mm). And then she googled 6mm crochet hook, and it (of course) gave her the J-10 for the U.S. size, so she just wrote that in the description.. But if it were actually a U.S.G-6 crochet hook, 56-66sts will make around 11-13 inches, which then sounds right for a length of a beanie. I just hoped she corrected it in the video description later, when there are so many comments mentioning about that.. Also, I think it would have been more clear if she measured both the width and length of the finalized beanie. And I didn't really understand why she mentioned "to stop crocheting once it reaches about 18 inches", when in the beginning she mentioned the circumference to be around 21 inches.. I started using a #5 bulky Premier Puzzle yarn (Gauge: 15sx20r = 4in/10cm on size US10/6mm knitting needles-- just because I had that yarn, it was actually a yarn for a 6mm hook, and it is machine wash/dry-able. I tried crocheting with a 5.75mm hook, wanting a more tightly crocheted feel. But then it didn't feel right anyway, I got all frustrated with the measurements, so I stopped after having crocheted for like 5 inches (I have already adjusted the vertical length to be around 9.5 inches) and undid the whole crocheted fabric. I decided to calculate and measure how long that beanie in the video may actually be, got the better measurements, and started writing this comment..! So, eventually I am using a 5.75mm crochet hook for the Premier Puzzle (#5 bulky) yarn, made the loop with 12 chains (hoping the length of the loop shouldn't be too different..), made 39 chains and a 2-chain-post in the beginning that makes a 12inch-long chain to start with (I wanted the beanie to have fold). I am now way more optimistic that it will make a good beanie. Anyway, thanks for sharing this video -- although it gave me a massive headache for the past 3 days. LOL
Thank you so much for your research and explanation. I’ve just ripped my chain out for the third time !!! 66 was reaching my neck! 😂 So I’m using #3 premier yarn, coffee shop! With a 4 mm hook let’s see if it works, if not I’m moving on!!!
Thank you for the research, because I got frustrated and took my hat apart. It just didn't feel right. I was using 100% worsted wool. I may try again, but I would love to see how your beanie came out.
@@xlena60 I actually ended up with a very cool looking beanie with a 2-inch fold. It felt a bit crowded when I was trying to sew the top part together, but so much better than without that ring on the top. It comfortably covers (snug and fit but not tight) from the forehead-ear(measurement was done by passing the earhole, and the beanie covers the whole ear until the earlobe)-backneck (1inch below where skull ends) which had a circumference measurement of 25.5 inches. (I have intended it to be worn like that). FYI the circumference measurement of the head normally done for hats and caps (from forehead to the most convex part of the back of head) was 22 inches. Hope this helps!
the absolute BEST pattern, tutorial and technique. impressive. you're a GENIUS! thanks for a fantastic video. this will be my go-to, as I wear hats nightly (and am always in need of hats which go out of season most of the year).
Thank goodness I read the comments. Thanks Jessie! I love the look of the hat but mine was getting too long as well with a 6 mm hook. However my major issue is working anything with black wool ( my hubby’s choice of colour) and so many rows of slip stitches. I admit I gave up. It is a great pattern, just not for me. If you give it a go, check Jessie’s comment down here for the correct hook and gauge and DON’T use black!

Thank you so much for this pattern! I have been searching for a decent men's hat pattern for some time and it seems like I've found it at last! 👏🏻👏🏻. I really like this pattern. I've been looking for simple beanie patterns that I can use as a stash buster with the intent of donating the hats to a local emergency shelter for the houseless. They request winter hats every fall. I'm going to do this one, but instead of the ch12 at the beginning, I'm going to use the magic circle method demonstrated in later videos. I think that will make the top easier to close. Thanks for the pattern!😇
I was just searching to see if anyone had tried this!!! I attempted this with Weight 4 yarn and a 3mm hook and quickly ran out of room in the 12 chain circle! Trying again with the magic circle today!
I LOVE THIS BEANIE! Thank you for the most simple and effective method, tutorial yet! I’ve been looking all over for a pattern that is well explained for making adjustments to size as I am making this beanie for myself and have a smaller sized “bean” to cover! lol.
Thank you so much for publishing this pattern and the video. This is a great structure, very different than the usual circle ones and quite knit like. I used a Tunisian crochet that makes it easier to crochet into the slip stitches that can be hard to grab sometimes. I didn't find the same yarn so for me it was more 35 stitches than 55 for the size with hook 6mm
I definitely understand. I had to adjust my starting chain several time. I had to reduce to 57 stitches instead of 66 stitches. This is the tricky part when using different yarns.
I've been trying to teach myself and finding your channel was the best that could happen! The way you explained it is wonderful and clear, thank you for sharing :)

Hello I know this is kind of late but do you perhaps have any pictures wearing the hat? I'm having trouble knowing if this was the type of hat my friend wanted and I'm gonna make it for him too 😅
idk if i did something wrong, i used the same size hook and yarn as you did, but my hat was like almost like 1.5 feet long? even with the cuff it was still really big.
Thank you SOOOO MUCH for making this pattern free & even including a video tutorial!!! Dream come true! I’ve been looking for this style of crochet beanie for a long time & hard to find a free pattern I like. I wear lots of beanies and only been crocheting seriously for 2 months so this makes things much easier for me (dabbled for awhile though). I even get to use my favorite Furls hook to work it up! Can’t wait to finish it! I’ll probably end up making several 🥳🤩😱
I did also initially. Make sure you are recognizing your stitch. V part of stitch toward left, curved part of stitch towards the right. Hope this makes sense to you!
I love this pattern especially for gifts for the men in my life! I am having trouble though. The bottom of my hat (not near the ring) isn’t straight. When I hold it up it’s diagonal. I counted my stitches and they have been consistently the same but I’m about 12 inches in and it trails off. I feel like my tension is the same as well. I have been crocheting for two years and never had this issue. Please help!
I did find the same with mine but when you stitch it together at the end it will straighten out as long as you’re not adding or subtracting stitches :)
I could use some help...this is the second hat I've ever crocheted. Is my length supposed to be this long? It measures 16 inches from the end to the circle after only once through the pattern (3 or 4 inches wide). It seems as though this hat is twice the length it should be? Also in your vid it says repeat rows 1-4 but on the written copy it says 5-8? Thank you for your help!!
I used the correct yarn size and hook...not sure if something as simple as tension could change the hat length that drastically but I am new to the craft?
That is a good question, 55 chains like she suggested was way to long... 35 or 40 Chains would have been enough. Now it is to late to go back and fix it. What a waist of time and yarn. :( Love the pattern though, I will try again and start with 35 Chain and a smaller middle circle. 😀
The brim of my hat is looking a bit zig zaggy when it alternates from the single crochet rows to the slip stitch rows and i doing something wrong?? should i do a row of slip stitches at the end to make it all look straight?? please help
@@RichTexturesCrochet hi, I bought this pattern from you yesterday on Etsy. I am trying to make this hat with the same hook (6mm) but my work seems to have different height.... Can you tell me what height should this beanie have without a brim? Mine has 32 cm
How do you crochet the edges straight in this pattern? I've noticed that when I crochet this pattern my edges keep turning inward. I think its because we are only supposed to work in the backstitch but I honestly have no clue. I just want a beanie with straight edges ): I like this pattern but im so tired of restarting because of the damn edges
You can search this up on RUclips like I did because i suck at explaining things. When you are done a row you add another loop and skip 1 or 2 holes. Just always make sure you double check if it’s straight :)
Hi! Absolutely love this pattern! I’m using a bulkier yarn to make this hat. Any chance you know how many inches it should be from the circle to the bottom of the hat? 56 stitches looked enormous! Thank you!
You will want it probably 8.5-9.5 inches without the brim for an adult (add 2 inches for a brim). For your foundation chain chain 1 inch longer because the chain will shorten as you work into it :)
@@RichTexturesCrochet If you could please put this in the pattern and or text overlay on the video it would be great! I worked a whole hat and found it was so long it is unusable.
Hello🤗 I'm kinda new to crocheting. All I have as far as hooks go... Is a 5.5 and a 6.5. Which one do I use and how do I make the chain measurements come out right. The stitches will be smaller or larger than yours. Please help. Im making Christmas this year
I would go with the 6.5mm (if you find the hook too big then switch to the smaller) as it may make the slip stitches easier to work into. Then for your starting chain simply work it until it reaches the desired length and then add 1-2 inches because it will shorten when you work in to it. Hope that helps!
Love this! I am in the process of making it I’m up to around row 14 but I’m having some trouble with it. It’s starting to become like a corner in the top bit right before I have to take it through the top circle, and it’s not curving it’s more straight and flat. Do I just keep going and it will eventually come together?
I’m having the same exact problem... spent all day on this so i don’t want to just give up but I don’t want to waste more time doing it wrong ... we’re you able to fig it out ?? 😩
It will look like it is but as long as your not losing stitches, when you crochet it together at the end it will even out. Just make sure you’re keeping the stitch count
I tried following different videos for a beanie and they confused the life out of me. You honestly did a really good job explaining each step which made it super easy to follow! All that’s left is to get on making one in the morning
I am so frustrated with this pattern. Idk what I'm doing wrong. It looks like the stitches are moving away from the brim. The thing that confuses me is skipping the first two chains. Is that only done the one time you mention in the video or is that for every row and turn?
I'm not currently making this pattern but am making a similar one by this creator and I've come across a similar issue as I got confused with the chains. When you're finishing a row on the side of the starting chain-circle, you slip stitch into the circle, turn and chain one, then skip the slip stitch and chain and start working into the final single crochet of the previous row. And you do that every time you finish a row on that side. For all other rows you finish them like normal, with a chain 1, turn and skipping the chain 1, instead going into the last single crochet of the previous row. When I used to have issues knowing where the last stitch of a row was I got advised to put a stitch marker in the first and last stitch of the row and it really helped and now I can tell where they are just by sight. That may help here as long as you remember to put the marker in before you slip stitch into the chain-circle.
I am having the exact same issue. I’ve been marking every 10 stitches to help me count but my edge is losing its straightness. I’ll try marking the first and last stitch of the row as suggested and see if it helps. Is there a way short of frogging to return to a straight edge?
this is beautiful pattern which looks like knitting but in actual is crochet. I needed this thank you! I want to ask can i make this beanie with not so strechy and regular yarn ?

LOL
Omg I did a few rows and was whoa that's way to long. Thanks for the info!
Thank you so much for your research and explanation. I’ve just ripped my chain out for the third time !!! 66 was reaching my neck! 😂
So I’m using #3 premier yarn, coffee shop!
@@jessiel9754 Yes, it does. Thank you.
the absolute BEST pattern, tutorial and technique. impressive. you're a GENIUS! thanks for a fantastic video. this will be my go-to, as I wear hats nightly (and am always in need of hats which go out of season most of the year).
Thank you so much :)
@@RichTexturesCrochet OMG...U R A GODSEND. I STOPED the hat i was makin and starte this
Thank goodness I read the comments.
This is a marvelous stitch pattern - the best I have seen in a long time . Can’t wait to make this hat!
Works up beautifully....looks knitted but takes a tremendous amount of time to complete. Glad I made one but won't make another
Love how the top is done very different to what i have seen before. Can i ask does a magic ring work at the very start also?
I'm making these for men cancer patients. The oncology treatment clinic near by gets a lot of donations, most of which are for the women in treatment. Sometimes the guys get overlooked. I'm in a crochet group and we are taking care of the guys this time. Your pattern is perfect.
SOOO glad I found you, Sarah! I love this pattern. It will be so easy for my crochet group of ladies to make for our "Warming Tree" this winter. Thank you for the free patterns.
You’re welcome :)
You are a life saver! I was making a beanie for my dad when I realised that the way I was doing it would for sure make me run out of yarn. I was upset because I put effort into it. I wanted to fasten it off in case I needed it for anything. I went browsing on RUclips, finding the same tutorial over and over again until I found yours! I’m halfway through and it looks amazing. Thank you so much 😊😊❤❤
i watch so many tutorials an you are the best so far, thank you

Thank you so much for this pattern! I have been searching for a decent men's hat pattern for some time and it seems like I've found it at last! 👏🏻👏🏻. Blessed with fussy men in my family from husband down through sons and grandsons, I all but gave up knitting or crocheting hats for them- until now .... stand back and be amazed boys, you are about to be anointed with all those beautiful skeins of manly colours of yarns collected up over the years 🤗
You’re welcome :)
Dropping this project an hour into this,,, might comeback later another year
I really like this pattern.
After the Elizabeth beanie, this will be my next hat. Thanks for offering a brimmed and brimless version. I cannot wait to start!
I LOVE THIS BEANIE! Thank you for the most simple and effective method, tutorial yet! I’ve been looking all over for a pattern that is well explained for making adjustments to size as I am making this beanie for myself and have a smaller sized “bean” to cover! lol.
I’m glad you like it :) thank you for watching!
Pamela Heath me, too. I wear child size hats, lol.
This is fantastic & you are such a good teacher thank you so much
I've only done scarves and blankets.
I will definitely try this. It seems foolproof
I love this pattern, I only made 40 stitches in mine and it turned out great. The 60 stitches were way too long
I literally did what she told me to n now my hat looks like a giant sock. It’s a good thing you didn’t do friggin 65 like she says to do 😭
@@No_nAmE731 yep same here haha, started over 3 times or so.
Did you did the folded kind?
@@ReannaPeters12 folded? You mean did I make thr hat wide enough for a fold over? Yes
@@annettemiliken3555 yes thank you
This is a beautiful pattern to stitch. The hard part is when you're using a different yarn, and trying to determine the guage!!!
I reallly enjoy this technique and the look it produces. I’m definitely going to try this out.
I've been trying to teach myself and finding your channel was the best that could happen! The way you explained it is wonderful and clear, thank you for sharing :)
I am very impressed with your technique as well as with this tutorial. Thank you for sharing

Thanks, thanks, thanks! Clear, easy to follow and lovely at the end. Making a beanie for my brand new son-in-law out in Denver, CO (currently getting snow!!).
I’m glad you enjoyed the tutorial and I hope your son-in-law enjoys the hat :)
LOVE this. I've been making hats similar to this in slip stitch (knit stitch) only but i love the look of adding the SC row. Thank you for sharing this tutorial. I love making hats!

I like it with the brim best. I really like the way you do the tutorials.
Hi Sweet Sarah🤗 I'm going to start on making these for all the men in the family❣️ LOVE the construction of this hat!!! Brilliant job sweetie 👍👏Thank You & have a great weekend Much love💕☮️
Thanks Peggy! Hope you had a good weekend too!
Wow! I wouid never have thought of that!
Thank you for your unique design. I am going to make one soon.
Love your videos
please tell me the advantage of the beginning loop instead of crocheting a rectangle and sewing sides and top hole
Thank you! For me, I liked the way that the top of the hat closed, it’s not as big of a seam. :)
@@RichTexturesCrochet thank you
After three weeks of on-again, off-again crocheting, this hat is complete. Even though it is complete, it is not the way I wanted it to look like at all. I tried to get the same style as shown here and I have failed. I am going to try again, and this time I try to cut the flip of the hat off and try with multi-color yarn.
Wow after watching this, I’ve deciding I’m going to learn how to crochet. This is so cool!
Great decision! You'll love the crochet life...enjoy! 🌸💕
@@malikastone I just finished my first beanie last night on a circle loom! I did a knit three/purl two pattern and it turned out better than I expected. This version is next on my list. I’m hooked, thanks again for making this.

You did a great job on this Tutorial. The instructions were very clear and you went at a pace crocheting the stitches that was very easy to follow along.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it :)
Is it normal for my work to slightly curve at the end? If not, do you know of any way to fix this without redoing my rows? Thanks!
yes it is normal
this is my favorite beanie pattern, ive made probably 5 of these beanies (some as gifts)
Just finished making one for my boyfriend as a christmas gift. Thank you so much for the pattern and your instructions 😊❤️. I really enjoyed making it 😁🙏🏼.
So happy to hear!
im about to make this for my bf too but idk cause i never do it. is it hard? :(
How long did it take you?
Hello I know this is kind of late but do you perhaps have any pictures wearing the hat? I'm having trouble knowing if this was the type of hat my friend wanted and I'm gonna make it for him too 😅
I've never seen a beanie made like this. Nice pattern and video. I look forward to making this. Thank you.
You’re welcome :)
Super detailed instructions! Im a beginner but super excited to see if I can do this. New sub!
Thank you so much for subscribing!
idk if i did something wrong, i used the same size hook and yarn as you did, but my hat was like almost like 1.5 feet long? even with the cuff it was still really big.
Same im trying to figure out how i can fix it
Thank you SOOOO MUCH for making this pattern free & even including a video tutorial!!!
Im making this for Takashi. (Not my boyfriend.... Yet 😼)
Anyway i love him and he gets cold ears when he skates ♡︎
I really like the top of the hat - very neat.

Was that a pun?
This is a lovely hat; thank you for the demonstration. Do you have a suggestion for a yarn substitute, now that this one is no longer available?
I'm having a hard time finding the back stitch after I've got about 3 rows it's hard to determine
Me too. I am confused at row 3
I did also initially. Make sure you are recognizing your stitch. V part of stitch toward left, curved part of stitch towards the right. Hope this makes sense to you!
Same! I am doing all she said and I'm looking for back row BUT it looks more like a spiral to me :(
I couldn’t figure it out for the life and me and undid all my work I was so frustrated.
Great idea, gives it a knit look 😊 Could you do a magic ring at the top instead of 12 chains?
Possibly - it may depend on the pattern but you could certainly give it a try
If you measure the 66 chains, what is the length (in inches) supposed to be? Mine is 20" and I wonder if the hat will be too loose if it stretches?
I love this pattern especially for gifts for the men in my life! I am having trouble though. The bottom of my hat (not near the ring) isn’t straight. When I hold it up it’s diagonal. I counted my stitches and they have been consistently the same but I’m about 12 inches in and it trails off. I feel like my tension is the same as well. I have been crocheting for two years and never had this issue. Please help!
I did find the same with mine but when you stitch it together at the end it will straighten out as long as you’re not adding or subtracting stitches :)
Rich Textures Crochet thank you! I was becoming disheartened. I didn’t want to continue because I thought I was doing something wrong
Sooo glad I read this comment before I started! I'm about halfway into the hat and have found it doing the same diagonal thing.
i don't really understand when you first start it as i can't tell if you are doing the sc in the back stitch or the front
I'm having the same problem I dont want to keep going and then have a giant hatt
I have the same problem. 66 stichtes end up being 20inches for me.
Are you guys using the right size yarn and hook if you are then you might just need to adjust your tension
I used the correct yarn size and hook...not sure if something as simple as tension could change the hat length that drastically but I am new to the craft?
Sar Greenbird maybe move down a hook size if nothing else is working it should make the size smaller
That's wonderful! Could I use a magic circle instead?
Yes you can :)
@@RichTexturesCrochet I'm trying ut now, but it's hard to keep up with the last stitch.😊its a work in progress.
Thanks for the pattern! Mine's a little long, I think it's because I used a thicker yarn. How long in inches do you recommend the chain being?
That is a good question, 55 chains like she suggested was way to long... 35 or 40 Chains would have been enough. Now it is to late to go back and fix it. What a waist of time and yarn. :(
Love the pattern though, I will try again and start with 35 Chain and a smaller middle circle. 😀
This pattern is brilliant! Thank you for sharing it.
You’re welcome :)
The brim of my hat is looking a bit zig zaggy when it alternates from the single crochet rows to the slip stitch rows and i doing something wrong?? should i do a row of slip stitches at the end to make it all look straight?? please help
Very clear and concise tutorial. Thank you.
I can't wait to try this pattern. It looks so simple. Thank You
You’re very welcome, I hope you enjoy it :)
@@RichTexturesCrochet hi, I bought this pattern from you yesterday on Etsy. I am trying to make this hat with the same hook (6mm) but my work seems to have different height.... Can you tell me what height should this beanie have without a brim? Mine has 32 cm
Just genious with a small loop on the top. So much easier.
At the last stitch instead of going into only the back loop go through both not only the back.
Thank you so much!
@@RichTexturesCrochet you are awesome, truly🤗 Have a Merry Christmas to you and yours❣
Love this! I am in the process of making it I’m up to around row 14 but I’m having some trouble with it. It’s starting to become like a corner in the top bit right before I have to take it through the top circle, and it’s not curving it’s more straight and flat. Do I just keep going and it will eventually come together?
How many rows do we need to do
I’m having the same exact problem... spent all day on this so i don’t want to just give up but I don’t want to waste more time doing it wrong ... we’re you able to fig it out ?? 😩
Does anybody know where I could find this yarn. I like the sound of this blend and that it gives a stretchy feel.
Question: I feel like by the time I get to the end my rows are shorter than the one I started with but I followed step by step..any suggestions?
It will look like it is but as long as your not losing stitches, when you crochet it together at the end it will even out. Just make sure you’re keeping the stitch count
Rich Textures Crochet okay great. Thank you!!
You’re so good at explaining everything, thank you so much!
I tried following different videos for a beanie and they confused the life out of me. You honestly did a really good job explaining each step which made it super easy to follow! All that’s left is to get on making one in the morning
I’m so glad you found it helpful and easy to follow :)
I've had a time trying to find a way to crochet a hat and hope this will do it for me. Thank you 🧶❤
Thank you for the video. The pattern is pretty but I have a question, how long of the first 12 sticks?
This is absolutely brilliant!!! Thank you for sharing!!
this is beautiful pattern which looks like knitting but in actual is crochet. I needed this thank you! I want to ask can i make this beanie with not so strechy and regular yarn ?
You’re welcome and yes you may use another yarn
Unusual way of making the hat ..... and will try to make one. Thank you for sharing.
It is different! I like it though because of the minimal sewing and how it gathers at the top. Let me know what you think when finished :)
