So I tried this fix today. Modified the idea a little bit. Used some Ez-flo Polyethylene Tubing that I picked up from Lowes but the same size used in the video. It was around 10 bucks for 25 feet. It is a bit more stiffer than Vinyl tubing but not as harsh as metal/alloy ones. Overall super easy to put in and it works GREAT. Took 90% of the slop out of my steering and definitely noticeable and is very worth while. I know this is an old video but hope this helps somebody in the future. By the way this fix works for around the same year 1500's as well. Safe driving everybody!
Great fix.....genius idea!! Just as an FYI to others with the same issue, EMF makes little press in bushings designed specifically for this issue. I think they're about 10 bucks for the pair.
So I have a 2007 5.9 cummins, pretty mint 80k miles when I got it 3 years ago. It had a petty bad wandering issue especially when towing.. I changed to a thuren track bar, new t style tie rods, it felt better but still kinda went down the road like shit, I was about to order a redhead steering box, I just did this hose job I used 3/8 i.d. 9/16 o.d. I had to put a slight taper on the o.d. with a razor. Got em in, taped it up, and the truck drives better than it ever has, I'm blown away like a fucking queef in a tornado 🌪 I wish I knew about this 3 years ago..... thanks for the video!!!!!
EMF Balljoints has alloy bushings that are cheap and work well also. With their bushings you would have less steering play but maybe a bit more vibration.
Wow I just did what you said and my freaking steering is now awesome I have a 2008 Ram 3500 4x4 with new All Terrain Tire’s and my steering wonder freaking sucked this pretty much solved my wonder issue thank you
Actually this is a good quick fix. Took slop out and helps dampen vibration. The softer material absorbs energy. Works better then any metal bushing or sleeve. Kinda like the old rag joint theory.
I don’t comment on videos very often but I’m going to on this one because holy crap... this made a ton of difference in my steering. Like he said in the video, my joints are good but this was moving a lot and this fix really helped me.
I’m struggling in vain to fix my 09 Power Wagon! Been finding a lot of good tips and fixes on RUclips. Thank you for the video. I’ve yet to find where all my excess play is coming from though. Love my Wagon but I’m ready to drive it into a bridge abutment!!
While this is a VERY inexpensive fix for what could have been a complicated repair, I would imagine that eventually this fix will give out at some point and need replacing later on. The beauty is the price to fix and ease of install, so replacing it again later should be a snap!
I gave this a shot. It helped slightly but the truth is I think I'm in need of a new steering shaft. I've replaced almost everything but the shaft and now it's time to pony some bucks for the Borgeson. Thanks for putting this up though.
Did you ever figure out what was causing the up and down play in the steering wheel? I'm having the same problem a year later and no one else seems to be having this issue.
Try the fix from PermaShield.net it's 60 bux with shipping and fixes the ovaling of the steering box, caused by bad engineering from the factory. If you have a clunk in your steering and have slack in your steering this fix should help.
tried this out earlier! haven't drove yet though will first thing in the morning! I couldn't get the tube to slide in as far as yours did though. hopefully this helps out the dead spot I have in steering wheel
a better way is to go to local auto parts and find 2 of the right size bushing for your door that matches the diameter of the pin on shat and hammer it in on both sides. permanent fix. there usually brass i'd try to find steel ones if you can but the bras will work but not last permanently like the steel ones will being that the pin is steel and harder than the brass.fixed mine 2 yrs. ago still looks the same
i have an 08 Power Wagon.. similar issue i started noticing right after replacing a tie rod.. my wheel has play up and down mostly when i hit a bump.. it's like i have to brace myself now..i'll look into this but will likely have to get a new aftermarket shaft i guess.. for now, iv had my wallet jammed inbetween the steering and the cluster, it sort of lessens what i feel, but it's still there and annoying.
Bro if this works I’m going to use the saved money to buy a ticket to fly and kiss you! I almost sold my truck because I am so pissed about the steering!
I'm working on a truck customer says its making clunking, popping almost sounds like metal grinding everything they turn and only when they turn it got louder when they started hualing around trailers could this be the steering column? I changed out all the suspension except for the shocks and yes I even changed out the rack and pinion.......
Sorry for the slow reply I'm not on RUclips much lately. that almost sounds like it could be the Ujoints in the front axle... but without seeing it in person it's hard to give very accurate advice. Anyway good luck.
@@jaxturner7288if it's an older truck I'm sure owner won't mind getting new parts. If it's in the shop and a tech is fast at changing out parts, go nuts is what I think about it.
I didn’t want to do anything rigid, I wanted to retain some of the stock dampening affect without the harsh impact of the pin hitting the side of the joint and causing the clunk/feedback in the steering column.
It tightened up my steering. If you have a heavy wander I think that would be an alignment issue possibly tie rods/ball joints, or improper toe setting.
@@thatmanmrchris yes I did have a look. And there's no play in the pin you pointed out. The rubber around the ball joints lowers is dry and cracking so I thinking the same as you. But your video is a great place too start. Thanks for the uload.

This worked well on my 2010 Ram 1500. Very noticeable improvement in steering now. Thanks!

Also 1/2" O.D. - 3/8 i.d. copper pipe works as well.
Thank you for the video...followed your instructions and the play in my steering is gone!
Thanks for the information. I spent $0.49 on tubing and it really helped my 04.

Wow, my truck has the same problem but would have never thought of this.... Thanks!
Smart man I like when you can fix things the cheap way
EMF Balljoints has alloy bushings that are cheap and work well also. With their bushings you would have less steering play but maybe a bit more vibration.

Thanks, I just did this and the annoying feedback I've had for a year is gone!
emf ball joints sells steel bushings to fix that, I made a set on a lathe and put a hose clamp so they cant come out

Brilliant dude! I’m all about the MacGyver fixes 🤙🏼
This is awesome man thanks for posting this
Put a hose clamp over the cut tubes to squish them a little tighter and then cant back out!
What size hose clamp
Man did this help me out! Thank you sir!
Just did this on my 06 ram. It would knock every time I'd take an on ramp or hit some bumps. Just got annoying thanks for this vid. Helped out

great work man, maybe add hose clamp around it
Or even a wide zip tie.
Awesome idea. Jesus bless
Thank you sir. Very helpful
Bro just buy the $19 kit from CJC that has steel bushings and fix it the right way where it actually lasts
What’s CJC sir?

Jebediah K .
It's usually the lower joint that goes, the one at the box or steering gear .
Check it first
Did you ever figure out what was causing the up and down play in the steering wheel? I'm having the same problem a year later and no one else seems to be having this issue.
AE4TheWin I’m also experiencing the same up/down play which makes a small “clunk” noise. Trying to locate the route of the problem

I guess I should have said the fix is for second gens tho, I don't think it will work on 03 and up
You are the king my man 👑🙏

Jorge Gonzalez .. if not check the joint at the lower end near the steering gear box.. it usually goes first
SMART THINKING. THANKS.

That's a good freaking idea
EMF Ball Joints sells a metal bushing kit for like $10. It's a bigger pain to install, but won't wear.
How do you like them
@@Whatisgoingon-od9yb they tightened up the steering a noticeable amount
Tried this in mine and unfortunately it didn't go away. I suspect I Might have to replace that upper shaft or dampener . But great video and idea..

Hey did it work ? Mine is a 12 too and same problem
I welded mine to the shaft.
You welded a rubber hose to the shaft?
so simple. thanks a bunch.

ill fly there with ya .... i know the feeling that feel of the steering has driven me nuts
Did you end up flying there and giving him a smooch? Or it didn’t work.
Thanks

Jezus maybe learn how to diagnose something before just throwing tons of parts at customers vehicles. 👌

Sounds like a topic for another Dodge upgrade video.
why can i not find anything on the rubber in the shaft?
So would this fix the dead spot in the steering?
It can't hurt to try it defiantly helped with mine.
I've done something similar. ive crammed o rings in there.
Mine is doing something like this. What size tubing is that?
Brady Foster. Did you even watch the video? He says what size it is loud and clear.
Since someone else wants to be a jerk..... 3/8 ID by 1/2 OD but it didn’t work for me.
Mike Long nope, the slack is actually in the steering box itself on my 2017.
Female metal cap ?
I didn’t want to do anything rigid, I wanted to retain some of the stock dampening affect without the harsh impact of the pin hitting the side of the joint and causing the clunk/feedback in the steering column.
CJC for sure
I had that problem with my 1500 😂
FWIW, my 2003 isn't built like this at all. It doesn't have any attempt at rubber mounting or isolating.
My 01 1500 has a knock in the steering column.
I cant figure it out
Did this fix a wandering issue?
It tightened up my steering. If you have a heavy wander I think that would be an alignment issue possibly tie rods/ball joints, or improper toe setting.
