    For myself, my truck for too long was woefully neglected, so it developed terrible death wobble. The first thing I did that really helped was start rotating the tires frequently and maintaining fairly even and relatively high tire pressure - about 60 PSI seemed to do the trick to allow me to go faster. I then all at once replaced the front steering linkage with the 4th gen t-style, steering damper, pitman arm, ball joints, shocks, and sway bar end-links and bushings with halfway decent replacements. I also had the tech at my tire place tighten the steering gearbox a 1/4 turn when they did the alignment. Absolutely no more death wobble and I can go 90 down the interstate hitting all the bumps and bridge joints. I keep my tires about 50 PSI still since I do a lot of highway driving and some hauling.
    Last and this summer I took my daughter camping and we got beat to hell driving on the backroads, and we spent more time driving on them becauseI had to go slow than we did camping. That part really wasn't pleasant. Less time driving, more pleasant and fun, easier ride, more time camping. That was my wakeup call.
    I still have some steering wander so next on my list will be the Carli track bar. The reason I held off on that is that when I get new tires I'm going to level my truck and I'll need to adjust it to those. Not long after that I'll get the Carli sway bar. I'd get them all at once but I won't be able to afford them all and I really need new tires before winter! Will likely get Toyo AT3s since I do a lot of highway driving and need tires that do well in snow and ice.
    Right now I'm waiting on new ujoints, brake heat guards, and hub assemblies to refit all my brakes since I've already gotten the complete Power Stop Z36 calipers, rotors, and pads. When we were going camping, my brakes badly overheated going down long stretches of steep backroads (yes, I was using 2nd and 3rd downshifting and the Tow-Haul function, it was that steep).
    Probably next year I'm going to get a decent gearbox, Redhead or the bigger Mopar, along with a new Borgeson steering shaft. I'm on the fence about whether to get a gearbox brace. Eventually I'll replace all the steering components with the top-tier stuff, likely a Synergy linkage, Carli ball joints, Moog or Spicer u-joints, and replace my spring spacer leveler to a full Carli suspension level, at least the Off-Road version but I'd like to go with something nicer with the King shocks. Definitely have to replace my crappy factory rear leaf with the Carli Spring Pack. Then Carli radius arms.
    Getting new tow mirrors, headlight assemblies, taillight assemblies, and fog lights, will probably do all that this year. Replacing radiator, heater core, water pump, thermostat, cooling fan, and a variety of other little upgrades while I'm in there.
    When it's all done I'll probably do a video myself!

    For early 03-08 trucks the MOPAR 09+ steering is direct replacement upgrade. Both my 05 and my 08 dialysis have them, I agree with everything you said, unless you guys with big wheel and tire lifts including dropped pitman arms, those setups, the box brace is so necessary, my 05 on and 8” w, 15.50’s went through 2 stock boxes both chewed through the pitman shaft and seal from the lateral torque, the brace ($80 on Amazon) -+ new box fixed it and the death wobble on that truck. For most people the things mentioned in the video work. Also download Thuren alignment settings and have your local alignment shop set you up to those specs

    My trac bar bushings were so far gone and while doing them i snapped the passenger side trac bar mounting bolt nut that is tack welded from factory on that tab you know? So anyways i had just experienced the death wobble and i installed the Big ol Bushing kit and it was a lofe saver i just have to weld them in place and ill be set. It was daunting with cute little dewalts drilling 1" holes into my trac bar mountings holes but it was worth it. Also went with oressed in bushing as comapred to the 2 half bushing, insert style. Super clean truck you have sir!

    Just one clarification thing about the steering box braces, they are not intended tighten or fix any steering behavior, they are simply there to keep the steering box from torqueing side to side when you steer the truck and therefore help keep the box from wearing out pre maturely. They absolutely do something on these trucks because just rotating the wheels puts a tremendous amount of side load on the box and its only held on by 3 bolts. these truck frames twist pretty easily and you can check for yourself by driving one wheel on something elevated and try opening the door.

    Thanks for the great video. It was very informative. I have a question you may be able to answer. I have a 2013 RAM 3500 that has death wobble. I didn't have any death wobbles until I got a recall on the drag link. V06 - A drag link separation can result in a loss of directional steering control. Their fix was to weld the jam nut on the drag link. So my question is: Could this fix be causing my death wobble? Should I replace the welded drag link?

    • @JustDiesels
      @JustDiesels  Год назад

      No the weld wouldn’t. My guess is that they removed the drag link to weld it, and damaged one of the joints in the process. If you have a lot of lateral play or popping in the drag link ends, that’s the source! Basically just look for anything with abnormal play.

    First time I encountered a death wobble was in a 1979 K1500 chevy which was only 2-3 years old. Needed bushings in front. Death wobble has pretty much affected most 4x4 no matter who manufactured it Chevy, Ford, Dodge/Ram. The first fix should be the cheapest - get a master bushing kit. Often the most expensive fix is done first and doesn't fix the death wobble.

    The steering box brace does not do much, if anything, to fix death wobble. But I do highly recommend them, especially if you have the earlier smaller steering box and larger tires. They support the sector shaft. I installed mine after I broke the sector shaft. Luckily, I was only going about 10 mph when it snapped. And when I moved up to the larger steering box, I was told I no longer need the brace, but I’d rather have the added security even though I had to buy a new one to fit the bigger sector shaft.

    Before purchase the truck ran fine, suspension great, seemed to absorb bumps great. Upon purchase of a 2022 ram 2500 diesel. I had them put a 3inch leveling kit in it. It rides really rough now and when we go over a bunch of bumps in a row it death wobbles so bad we have to stop, it starts bouncing off the road or into another lane. Is it worth messing with the leveling kit or is a 4inch lift kit better as I hear a stage 2, 4 lift would solve the problem. Your thoughts

    Great video. Agree with everything u said. But the gear box brace isn't something u feel a benefit from it's just supposed to brase the shaft coming out of the gear box so it doesn't get lose like the factory one did. But with that steering stabilizer u have I'm not sure its nessisary.

      Make sure you only do what you need. No sense in replacing parts that are still good, especially since this stuff isn’t cheap. It has a bolt that is supposed to go through the trac bar bushing and the stabilizer as well. Is that an optional piece I should've bought? I'm also going to install a Carli adjustable trac bar and synergy steering kit at the same time so I'd like to have everything at once ready to go.

Was wondering if you had any thoughts on the product

    • @JustDiesels
      @JustDiesels  3 года назад +1

      Yeah Moog just doesn’t have quality parts for these trucks! Thuren’s drag link is awesome, but since it uses hiems it’s going to make some noise and be pretty difficult to align. As long as you accept that you’re going to get something that’s head and shoulders better than Moog! Synergy is a happy medium since it’s easy to align and work with, but the joints are nowhere near as durable and strong as a Heim joint.

  • @redsrt4

      I had one on the factory box too and I just don’t really think they do a whole lot on the boxed frame trucks! If you look at it from a dollars spent for improvement perspective, the ratio just doesn’t work out. On a second gen that totally changes and they’re well worth it.

    Steering box brace isn't really a waste, it adds a 3rd pivot point to the turning shaft of the Steering box. They have a pivot in the box on the top then one on the bottom were it protrudes out for the pitman arm to bolt to, that added leverage can and will wear out the box sooner, if anybody doesn't understand leverage then return to 1st grade, I believe it's explained there. Adding this 3rd location helps relieve the stress put onto the the length and puts some significant strength there, with your truck being as beast as it is with 37s and such, it will help the box last much longer. Love the channel and love the truck! She is stunning

    Currently looking at EMF ball joints for my 97 Cummins. I talked my dad into Carli joints on his 03 Cummins along with Mopar 08.5+ HD steering, new unit bearings, and u-joints. It was expensive but the steering was tight in that truck after the upgrades. If Carli made ball joints for my 97, I'd pay $800 today. Sadly they don't and they never will. If anyone has input on ball joints for a 97 please speak up. I'm ordering Synergy HD steering linkage and Carli control arms today. But I need ball joints and unit bearings next.
    I just found this channel but this guy missed unit bearings. My dad's were shot, and mine probably are too. Be sure to buy quality, as there is a LOT of junk on the market. And it doesn't help that those bearing assemblies are super expensive for third gens.

    With someone inside turning the steering back and forth....put on some nitrile/ disposable gloves and pinch the joints. You will get used to the difference of a joint articulating and one with a lot of play. You may not feel it good with a leather work glove. And know the spec. Some joints have a lot of play from the factory. Live and learn.
