How To Clean & Lube Grip Shift Shifters
HTML-код

- I show how to remove, clean, lubricate and install a SRAM Grip Shift shifter. There are different models of Grip Shift shifters. This video only shows one style. But other models are similar. I have other videos that show the process of installing the cable on different styles of GripShift twist shifters. I also explain why Jonnisnot is recommended over Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly).
Here is the Jonnisnot that I used:

How come whenever I try to do anything to grip shifters they break into half a dozen little pieces.
I have a question. Putting a 120 on my bike. if I take the small ratchet peice out of the shifter and cut the cable long, can I reuse it as a twist throttle? I want to make a budget build series out of it, and I have $0.
Thanks for this. Twist grips were always a mental block for me. To be honest, you've taught me two things
1 - How to fix a twist grip
2 - My slippers are sooooo boring :)
First time I have seen the alcohol used to remove the grip. I tried it today and it worked like a charm!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You also don’t always have to cut the cable like he did. On some bikes, put the chain in the biggest rear cog, and hold the derailleur there while turning the shifter itself back to the smallest cog. That will create slack in the cable, and if you have exposed cable sections like this bike, where the housing ends are secured on the frame, there will often be a slot there. You can then move the housings out of the frame holes and hang them loose and have as much cable and housing slack as you need to clean and lube.
I wondered about cutting the cable. Didn’t think it needed to be cut from what I seen from this video and another one
@@archieblevins833 yea there’s often no need. In addition, a pro tip. When you do install a new cable, before you cut off the excess after routing, take some super glue and lightly coat the cable in the area where you’ll cut, say an inch before and after. Let dry. Do your cut, and put your cable tip on. The SG will keep the strands together and if the tip falls off they won’t fray but more importantly if you ever have to remove the cable again and don’t want to replace it, having the strands super glued together will likely allow you to thread the cable back thru a housing.
Thanks for the video and for keeping it active considering its age. I have this very project on an older bike my son acquired and I've never worked on grip shifts before. You and Homer do good work!
I like the Homer Simpson slippers.........;)
david White bit
I love them. Perfectly for safety.
LOL
You always have the exact videos I'm looking for. Thank you, RJ and greetings from Germany!
The best bike channel. Go on in the same way!!!
i was going to get my bike to a repairer or junk it, but having watched this I reckon I can give it a go. Excellent video
Man.....u saved me....I was trying to figure out the cable thing, and, no sucess, til I find this video...thanks.
Hard to focus with Homer staring at me like that. Lol, thanks for the video.
YES INDEED
I wasn't sure how serviceable these were. I'm new to bikes. Thanks for sharing
superb job. you have an excellent gift of clarity.
I love your work boots.
That was simple, useful and detailed thanks a lot my friend 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
yet another useful video you do a good job explaining the processes.
Great how-to . Thanks for posting it !
Struggling with a FALCON Grip Shift . Your video is inspiring .
Video was a Great Help ! Thanks!
Thanks again RJ!
Superbe vidéo, merci beaucoup !
You make this look easy. Now I am going to try it.
Thanks. Bit more complex than I would of expected, but helpful video.
great vid. concise. what is needed. thanks
Much appreciated for the video and advice.
Thank you for this perfect guidance...
Thank you for this video.
I used a hair dryer to warm up the rubber grip worked great in colder weather and the Windex
Love those heavy duty work shoes!
very useful video. Thank you.
Your videos are awesome!!! Thanks for teaching, I love fixing bikes and keep learning new stuff from you. Thanks teacher!!! ^_^
Thank you for a very interesting video. I'm lovely the homer Simpson slippers. 😂🤗👍
Vero good indeed! Thank you
this video totally saved my ass! Thanks RJ!
excellent film work thanks
Great vid. The shifters were still stiff after overhauling the shifters, cables and housing. The actual grip was rubbing and causing friction against the outside of the shifter housing. Adjusted the grip and all problems are resolved and shifting through gears works beautifully.
There is usually a plastic washer between the shifter and the grip. It may have gotten lost at some point.
Very true. At the same time an easily overlooked / missing part can cause serious frustration if you are not careful.
Muy bueno !! Me volví loco para armarlo jaja gracias x la ayuda !!
Great video
Very good thanks!
great video thank you so much!
Mil gracias hermano
great video thanks
Thanks a million!!!!
RJ Great video! Helps a bunch! I have those same grip shifters on an old Schwinn Skyliner. The grips are deteriorating and I am hoping you know of a process to clean and repair the grip without buying new. Currently apart for cleaning but will have saran wrap grips til I figure out a cheap way to repair...darn quarantine!!
DOOD! FYI.... A fluorocarbon is based on a hydrocarbon, so it is (at its core) a petroleum based product. It's made by taking and replacing one or two atoms from a hydrocarbon and replacing them with fluorine (halogen atoms) :) But yes, it is very different from petroleum jelly.
Great video though. Thanks for the valuable info on how to do this :)
Well done son. Clearly explained. Thanks. Love the slippers ! ;-)
Dad? I didn't know you were on RUclips!
awesome, thank you
Perfect thanks For that you are a great master
great video thank you,,, my them slippers are brill
Very informatinal once again! I like your new profile picture btw.
Thanks!
Cheers Mate !
Thanks you!
thanks Mate !!!
Great tutorial. The only one that I could find on RUclips that demonstrated where the ratchet belongs. Used this to repair a shifter where the ratchet fell out.
I have a couple related videos where I show how to replace the cables in GripShift shifters, and I usually try to point out where the ratchet goes. Glad I could help!
You can also use silicone paste to lube the shifters.
Explains very clearly, nice job! Thanks a lot 、、
Was it nessacery to cut the cable as opposed to lossen the nut on the brake and pull the cable thorough?
RJ the fucking bike guy man. You solved my grip shift installation. Thank you a lot, for this and all of the other videos you have taken the time to film, edit and upload.
The grip shifters I was working on confused the shit outta me: On the left shifter, the cable head attached to the rotating part of it. But on the right shifter, the cable head attached to the fixed part of it (to the non moving part bolted to the handlebars). I was going crazy dealing with that shit.
Grip shifts are great.
Nice slippers 🤠
Hahaha look at those slippers =P
Nice tips, ta. I hate this grip shift shit, it's so fussy and uncomfortable, was lookin' for tips because my younger sister's bike has grip shift and it's so stiff, I can barely twist it.
Nice shoes
Anyone know we’re the index ratchet springs are available ? Thanks for the video, cheers 🚴🏼♂️🚴
My 1999 GripShifts have just recently stopped shifting, and the chain is sitting on the two smallest gears fore and aft. That's okay for now, but I think I would like to try to take the shifters apart and clean and lube them.
The shifter set is a 2 x 8-speed set up on a 1999 Specialised FSR Enduro.
I don't have easy access to a shop to get some of that SRAM lubricant so I'm thinking of trying some lithium high speed, high temperature wheel bearing grease I have in the shop here.
Would that kind of grease be okay?
I ~just~ missed picking up a set of shifters for a 2 x 8 speed system 2 months ago: all that's available on line now are 3x8 speed sets: can I use the 3 speed front shifter in place of the 2 speed one, or will I have to get a 3 speed front derailleur?
Of course, I could buy a 2-speed front shifter along with the 3x8 speed pair....
Very interested
RJ, quick question. Since I don't have any SRAM Jonniesnot available to me right now, would have to order from Amazon, do you think Super Lube Synthetic Grease (which I'm pretty sure I bought after watching your how to overhaul a socket wrench video👍) would be an acceptable alternative since it has no petroleum products in it? Thanks.
good video, buena tarde
Nice video. Learned to hate grip shifters over the years as I struggled getting the cable in. Never thought of doing it on the bar before. Thumb shifters are so much easier for cable swapping so I may just stick with them. Why do I have spider pig going through my head?
Yeah, I prefer trigger shifters too.
I have a falcon 3 speed hub. The shifter needs replacing. My issue is, that both ends of my cable have an inline lead barrel. The lead barrel unclips from the grip shifter through a slot. What replacement shifter will allow this, can be a thumb shifter ?
So now I know - thanks.
I use keg lube. I make and keg my own beer and the lube for the keg seals is silicone based - and food grade. Much cheaper than shifter specific lube. But I have it on hand.
It is probably similar to Super Lube.
Just caught this video recently while replacing the shift cable on my old bike. I have the same style Grip Shift on my bike (SRAM MRX100, I believe). What I discovered is that, when re-inserting the cable through this particular shifter, I can first assemble the shifter, then try to push the cable into the hole in the backside (where the head eventually stays). Now, keep pushing the cable while twisting the shfter back and forth. Upon doing this, the cable will eventually come out of the other side, threading itself correctly.
Hi RJ. First of all, thanks for putting out this useful video to help people who needs help like me. I opened the grip shifter and the little piece showed in your video at 3'35" which holds the position of different gears broke. It explained why my rear shifter always stays at the smallest cog position. Can you tell me where I would be able to purchase this part please?
Um yeah, you probably don't. Replace the shifter.
@@RJTheBikeGuy Thank you so much.
If you have an air compressor stick the blow nozzle under the lip of the hand grip and give it a light squeeze. the air will blow around and eject the grip
Love the Homer slippers. You know he’s a nuclear reactor operator, same as my old job on a submarine. Doh!
When he cut the cable that actually hurt my soul I fix my own bike and I was working on a old one and the twist shifter it was seizing up I switched it up and took the cable out on the shifter
If you are going to overhaul a shifter, might as well replace the cables. Cables wear out!
Guillaume Bourdel, no you would not want to use regular grease. The Jonnisnot is a silicone based lubricant.
OK so no grease on plastic. I guess it's the same for oil?
Thanks again! :)
Yeah, no petroleum oils. Silicone oil would probably be okay. Just buy the Jonnisnot. Or visit your local bike shop and see what they recommend. I think there are some alternatives. But I would avoid regular grease, oil or vaseline. Jonnisnot is what the manufacturer recommends.
Guillaume Bourdel plastic is a bi product of the petroleum distilling process & will be turned to mush,by grease/oil/vaseline,only use lube that is compatible with plastic ie silicone based :)
I just use washing up liquid to get the grips off and on :) does the job easily
I don't like soap especially for putting them on as it stays there. Alcohol evaporates.
Thumbs up for the video and the "Homer" slippers!!!!!!!
do the grip shifters differ on the inside mechanism for the left vs right side?
Sometimes how the cable attaches, but mostly they are pretty much the same.
Dude you're homer slippers are hilarious but a bit distracting!
Hey RJ, why would you not advise using solvents for cleaning in this case? I would've probably used alcohol or simple green... will they also be fine?
Oh wait it's because the material is plastic right?
You can use plastic safe degreasers.
Ok thanks!
Barely started on bikes got a trek 930 has a grip shifter its stuck should i do this to. Fix it

Love the video, I have this same bike, could I ask a quick question? I need to replace the back wheel can you tell me what type of gearing it uses? I think shimano 7 speed freewheel rather than cassette? Sorry its a dumb question
I just pulled it off. It's a 7 speed Shimano Hyperglide Cassette. But please make sure you have the same thing. A different model year of bike, may have something different. If you aren't the original owner of the bike, someone may have replaced the wheel. and since I bought this bike used, it's possible this isn't the original wheel.
shyflirt1 just cleaned the gears up and it says shimano hyperglide so what kind of wheel do I need? Sorry to ask
Your vedeo was helpful but I jus wanna service an not replace bike been sitting awhile jus need to loosen up shifter

I've got a MTB with grip shifters. I can't get the left grip shifter to rotate enough to move the front derailleur. I've taken the cable loose from thederailleur and pulled on the cable by hand while rotating the grip shifter and the shifter seemed to work fine. But as soon as i reattach thecable to thefront derailleur the shifter won't turn more than one or two clicks. Any suggestions of what to try next or what may be wrong? The derailleur moves freely if i pull on the cable by hand.
ruclips.net/video/gwBQxhZhKnE/видео.html
I have a shifter for the front that won't stay in gear. As if there rachet is loose, broken or worn. New pair with cable is only like $20 bucks. Think I'd be better just to buy new ones?
Can't really tell you what the problem is without working on it.
where can i get the wire
Will greasing like this help a shifter down shift that is only up shifting?
ruclips.net/video/gwBQxhZhKnE/видео.html
Very nice video again! just a quick question, could you just use grease instead of this SRAM product? Will that again eat through plastics (as you answered regarding the use of judy butter when overhauling suspension forks)?
Thanks!
Guillaume Bourdel Read his advisory again, r..e..a..l s..l..o..w..l..y. The silicone-based lubes, which Finish Line also now makes, is expressly designed both to lubricate, but also NOT destroy or damage plastics. I've used it for years, and it is not only far better than regular grease for this purpose, but also resists water and stays put on the plastic-metal contact inside the shifter, makes the plastic uber-slippery, and works on other types of problem /specialty areas as well. If you're working on your own bike, you're already saving all the money special lubes cost anyway; don't be pound-foolish and try alternatives that aren't recommended. That's what RUclips shade-tree mechanics are famous for, and why so many look stupid.
With all the quarantine going on....can I just remove the whole cable rather than cutting it? That way I can reuse it. My local bike shop is closed ATM. THANKS! (my son's shifter is stuck, guessing the cable came off the track.)
ruclips.net/video/07Bc0QkudW8/видео.html
@@RJTheBikeGuy thank you sir!
The easy way to remove the grip without destroying them is using a 2 long screw drivers. Place one on top of the handle bar at the end of the grip and one underneath the handle bar squeeze them in parallel format and start pulling the grip outward.
I didn't destroy them. I just didn't like the old ones.
I use silicone grease in shifters as it is safe for all plastics.
I think that is what this stuff is. This is what is recommended though.
@@RJTheBikeGuy Yes recommended by SRAM, but what do Shimano recommend? It certainly won't be a SRAM product ;-)
What if you have a 3 speed grip shift and it clicks up to 7 times? How to you get it to just click 3 times as intended for a youth bike front shifter? Thanks Matt
It's not indexed. That is just the way it is.
there's two versions for the left: one with only 3 positions and one with intermediate clicks (which are like trim positions or help the front derailleur to deal with 'extreme diagonal' chain positions going from 2 in front to smallest or biggest cog in the back). The clicks are defined by the plastic 'wave' in the outer grip part. you can't change it unless you get experimental ...
Silicone grease is what I use. A dialectric grease, and plastic, or rubber lubricant, plus water repellant. you might find connector assemblies of vehicles using it for water repulsion.
I currently have a road master granite peak, and I would like to maintain the shifter tb one, could the same procedure be applied?
Probably this or something like it.
@@RJTheBikeGuyPlease its a video about the road master granite peak, and if possible change the transmission to 3x8 since factory comes with 3x6 greetings
@@juanpabloguachallagalean9564 It's the brand/model of the shifters, not the bike. Roadmaster's are very low end bikes, so I am guessing it has cheap off-brand shifters. I don't work on department store bikes.
Question why couldn't you use your favorite slick honey on the parts
I guess because it is a petroleum based am I right
It might work, but this grease is much lighter and is what is recommended.
Hi RJ, hey is there grease or fluids you won't touch with your bare hands? I never see you using gloves. Are you sure everything you mess with isn't toxic or accumulative?
Don't worry so much, grease won't hurt you no matter the type.
My bike's gear shifter is stiff and wont move a single slot and it is right now on 5th gear and my bike is supercycle sc1800. plz help, let me know a solution without replacing a shifter.
ruclips.net/video/07Bc0QkudW8/видео.html
Nice. Whenever I repair these the washer breaks because it's so brittle. What do I replace it with?
thskadow I have never had the washer break. I have bought a couple of the washers at the my local bike shop out of their parts bin. Actually I think they just gave them to me.
Another washer, lol. Just go to the hardware store and get an appropriately sized rubber washer.
The washers are plastic so they slip between the shifter and grip. I doubt seriously you will find anything like this at the hardware store.
Mines super hard to turn, and seems likel the gears that are only really light and easy to turn work. I have to pedal 100mph to move.
