  • In this video, I demonstrate the process of converting a grip or twist style shifter to a trigger-style shifter. Sometimes the twist style shifters require more effort to operate than a small hand can muster. I run through the supplies needed, cable routing, and basic front and rear derailleur adjustments.

    Getting ready to do this project on my daughter’s bike. This was a really great video. I’m expecting to have a little trouble with the front derailleur but I’m excited to learn how to do this stuff myself.

    Lots of useful details on cable routing and fixing.
    Doing the same for my friend on his daughter's bike as she cannot operate the grip shifters.

    First things first….thank you for sharing your knowledge. Great instructional video. Just to confirm….for rear shifter and cable install, start by setting the gear positions to small cog in front and small cog in rear and shifter setting to highest number (7,8,9,etc)?
    How about for front shifter and cable install? Where do I set the gear and shifter positions?

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  3 года назад

      Yes, highest number available in the rear, position 1 in the front. These would be the positions to hook the cable to either derailleur as well as installing the cable into the shifter for virtually all brands and types of shifters except Shimano rapid rise rear shifters, but those are pretty rare.

    Can I just leave the gear shifter cable in place the way it is, remove the grip shifter and slide on the trigger shifter and then use the same cable that's already set up inside the trigger shifter and be good to go???

    My grip shifters are stuck on the handle bar? I've removed the screws holding them. I've dismantled the housings n I've tried hammering them off but won't even budge.
    Pls advice . Cheers !

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  Год назад

      Maybe, it just depends on if your derailleur(s), chain, and gears are index compatible.

    I just done this to a old trek 240 24" kids mountain bike. The factory twist shifters imo are junk. They are hard for an adult to turn. So i took apart an old iron horse mountain bike from dick's and stole the Shimano shifters off it. The old trek is a 3x7 while the iron horse is a 3x8 on gearing. So far the front works perfect and the rear does 1-5 really well. Past that it just clicks and doesnt move. I just got it together a few hours ago. Definitely alot better than it used to be. kids cant get their hands around those fat twist grips to reach the brake levers let alone shift gears. My boy struggles a bit with the left hand 1-3 shifter but the right hand is easy for in. 2:1--2:5 is about perfect for 99% of our riding. Stole the rear disc brakes off the old dicks bike and slapped then on my old monocog single speed 29er. Nobody wanted to buy the old iron horse. The shifters and grips would have put me back at least $50 and the disc brake i dont even know. It was cheaper to gut the old bike than it would be to sell it and buy the parts. Good luck

    great tutorial,but if I change my shifters to shimano for example must I change the derailleurs as well

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  3 года назад +1

      If the rear derailleur is a SRAM, it won't work with a Shimano shifter. Front derailleurs are pretty interchangeable usually. SRAM does make trigger shifters though.

    Hi Joey, Thanks for the video. I want to go the other direction. I have arthritis in my thumbs and cannot press the thumb shifters. I'd like to install grip shifters. What company do you recommend? Do you have any other thoughts? Thanks again!

      I will go to a bike shop for install on a dual suspension mountain bike, possibley a Salsa Spearfish.

      SRAM is the company that makes the "grip shift" brand of shifters. They offer several models that work with different pull ratios (Shimano and SRAM derailleurs require a shifter to match the specific number of speeds and models), so they should have something available for your specific application.
      Another option, although more expensive, would be electronic shifting. The SRAM GX AXS upgrade kits are readily available. If you already have a SRAM 12 speed eagle drive train, this kit is an easy upgrade and requires very little thumb strength. I made a video of this shifter set up about 6 months ago. ruclips.net/video/7BoutjFoKWU/видео.html

      One that matches the number of cogs/chainrings and is the same brand as the derailleurs.

    Hi what gear should it be 1 or 6 mine goes to 6 when putting the new gear

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  3 года назад +2

      Any time you're installing a new cable or new shifter in the rear, the derailleur should be in the smallest cog and the shifter should be in the highest numerical number gear, or 6 in your case.
