Solved the gear mystery of my son's bike! I was so inspired I also fixed his front brakes, kick stand and lock. Installed new lights and a new bell! Happy little boy, Happy mom. Thanks so much!
Fantastic walkthrough. I’ve never worked on a bike before and this make it simple, outside of my human errors. So clear, the different section were fantastic, and it blew other how-tos out of the water. Thanks so much for your hard work on this. I was able to save my kid’s bike!
I was manhandling the seize up grippers but only for it to slide back into seventh gear and get stuck again. Thanks man I really appreciate the video now I can actually fix my entire family’s bikes lol.
Had some problems with mine being really tight hard to twist. Soon the outer plastic split. Upon inspection the cable had some gritty rust spots. Being close to water it tells me we should also be lubing the cable that rides in the plastic outer also. Thanks for your helpful video! I got some answer to sticky shifter out of this. Always finding nuggets of knowledge and wisdom, tricks and great help.
@@TheOriginalMechanic Thanks and it did! Turns out I had snapped a small plastic piece inside so I had to replace the grip shift anyway, but now all fixed it runs as smooth and quiet as the day I bought it :D (Tern Link D8 gen1)
My lil spring was broke 😢I looked on Amazon for a replacement. To my surprise I could get the entire gearshifter for $10. I replaced mine and it’s working great. I usually buy top rated and whatever else everyone is buying on Amazon. I picked up some new brakes and intertubes too. After 1500 miles finally doing some deferred maintenance 🤣🤣
Thank you. The front derailleur works by the same principle and has the same problem -- the grease gets stiff. This is a problem in Shimano's road bike brifters too. The grease gets stiff.
Great video. You know how to demo. Thank you. Also, your voice is sharp and clear, not to mention that the cardinals and others added melody to the proceedings.
Thank YOU much! My Trek RST's Rt. Side shifter has gone down and I'll now have the courage to get it back up and running without me fighting it everyday for five miles! I noticed the Cardinals before you mentioned it. It's an elite bird that's rare to have giving you live music.
perfect. You get right to the nitty gritty without all the blah blah blah at the beginning. Grip shifter will be worked on tomorrow thanks to you... Great video
I'm working on a Walmart Shimano bike that any else would have thrown away it was in such bad shape with rust etc. It was a good way to get to know a bicycle. lol the shifter wasn't so bad. The shifter came apart after freeing clips that hold it together. Unlike yours. Part of the cables got rusty. I got them loosened up with WD-40 and cleaned. That took a little while. Thank you for the information.
Thanks so much for sharing this video. I now need to try it. Just bought a used bike at a garage sale, 7 gears, but will not shift at all, and can only turn 1 click on the twist shifter. I know nothing about repairing bikes, so this hopefully will be the fix. If not, I hate to think what else it needs. I realize now, that I paid far too much too! It is always something...ugh! I am beginning to believe that "Murphy" must be my Siamese twin!
Finally, no beating around the bush! My local bike shop wanted $140 to do an annual tune up on my kids bikes to fix this issue. I could get them new bikes for that price. So thank you for helping me save a few (a LOT) of money on repairs. Best video on this topic!!
That washer with the lip between the cable and the nut should have the lip over the cable so pointing down. Also correct assembly and adjustment of cable/shifter is always done in highest gear, not lowest. Always shift to highest before beginning to work on a bicycle.
Yes, watching this video was like man, people are fixing the shifter half wrong. You must put on highest gear( the small gear) than pull cable snug not too much force.
Thnx, this is very helpful. My brother's mountain bike has trouble shifting; thought derailleur was too tight, but makes sense. He cracked his shifter, dirt likely got in there. I'll probably wind up replacing it thou. Thnx again 👍
Great video! I have a mountain bike that was left on the curb for free. I put new tubes on it and adjusted the brakes. Come to find out the same shifter was stuck as the one you just fixed. I figured I would watch a video first before I just started taking stuff apart that didn’t need to be taken apart. This was exactly the same issue I was having. Thank you for the video!
Smh same with mine, dudes wife said “ he only rode it once or twice” okay lady why is everything rusty and broken? It was 10 dollars, which honestly I should’ve just gotten a Walmart bike or something
The front derailer shifter disassembly is now a problem. Taking it a part and getting it back together is now my other problem getting it back together right.
I suspect this spring is sold as part of an entire assembly. Your best bet might be to take one off another bike or maybe see if a bike repair shop has one lying around.
hi!! Im having this exact same problem with my boyfriends bike... I wanna fix it for him!!! I dont know much about all these lubricants though and i know some can be harmful for certain material if the correct one isnt used. Is there a specific lubricant you would recommend? When i looked up yours on Amazon, a whole bunch of options showed up 😵💫
Experts don't recommend petroleum based lubricants such as white lithium on plastic. I have personally used them without issues but apparently it depends on the plastic. Instead they recommend silicone based lubricants for plastic. Searching under that will result in many products.
Hey do I need that front derailer to shift my Gers on the back derailer? Thing is a headache. I wanna use the middle front of my 3 and just take the thing off. Is that possible?
The cable has to be loosened up some to get the grip shifter apart. I've seen a few videos where they actually cut a perfectly good cable to get the shifter apart. As for the bracelet...lol.
Came across in my recommended... Not sure how you put the cable back on, but it's way easier to be in the highest gear (7 in this case), pull any slack out of the cable, and tighten the bolt... No force or several pairs of pliers needed, you are not pulling. a lot of tension, just removing slack, plus, yeah, I would have change the cable at that point. Nice video though, I repair all sorts of these grips often, these particular once are one of the easier ones to take apart.... Ride on.
Good video but if my cable end looked like that I would be replacing the cable as you’re probably going to have to anyway sooner than later unless you can wind that up tightly and put it in a cable end. I would change it as I’ve got it off anyway saves doing it again later.
Just picked up a free, almost new bike, and the shifter won't move at all. I'm glad I ran into this video because now I can see if this is the problem.
A non-petroleum based grease is suggested for this job. WD-40 would be a no. A bike shop may have the ideal grease. I used what I had on hand. It's called Lubriplate.
Only other person Ive met who calls an Allen wrench an Allen wrench not a key people ,it wont start your car🙄😄Thank you this is vindication I feel like Howard Hughes when he said oops and that old spruce goose took off haha
My grip shifters are literally stuck. I've taken out the screws holding the shifter grips and they won't slide out. I've tried hammering them just to loosen them , still won't budge. Any ideas?
Two things: The cable has to be loose by cutting it or disconnecting it from the derailleur and the handle bar grip must be off. Then it should pull apart.
Does me, so the clicking sound is normal on these twist grips, thought something was wrong, thought 💭 it be less noise, smooth and a little noise, not click, click while twisting, so does me.... 👍

Interesting to tension the wire while on the largest cog...
Same shifter, same problem. Thank you so much

I suspect this spring is sold as part of an entire assembly. Your best bet might be to take one off another bike or maybe see if a bike repair shop has one lying around.
what about if its stuck at 7th gear
Probably 1) Cable tension problem if the shifter is still twistable, 2) shifter is broken, 3) it’s stuck

No, the front derailleur doesn't need to be shift-able for the back to work. Just leave it in one position and don't use it.

@@TheOriginalMechanic 😂😂😂
if you use a hair drier you can dry everything inside nicely
Good and clear instructions, thanks!!!
Cable retainer nut is 9mm. Put shifter and chain in high gear to not have to battle derailleur spring. Front derailleur do opposite.
Hey my shift gear refuses to go into gear 1 the other 5 work perfectly any ideas?
There may be a stop or limit screw that needs to be adjusted slightly. This is there to prevent the chain from coming off.
Iam the first one that got you from 2999 to 3000 likes!!!!
Thanks for that lol!
For the lube part, am I able to use wd40 instead of lubricant?? Basically just use oil instead
I know the pros recommend a non petroleum based lubricant. These can damage plastic parts.
WD40 isn't a lubricant. It displaces water and allows you to unsease moving parts.
Tks...comes in handy working on my grandkids bikes...
My shifted works but my low and high left handle dsnt go to high it’s stuck in low how do I fix that the same way ?
I would think that the same method would work on the left gear shifter.
