This is THE best video on the internet for instructions on adjusting and indexing a rear derailleur. Super clear, good camera shots, everything. I really appreciate this content
I agree! Very clear - concise - covered everything in the correct order! Just my opinion but, the "famous bike tools" video on the same subject was . . . honestly, it was just horrible. :(
I can not express how helpful this video is and how much of frustration it takes out from the transmission adjustments process. Let the Gods bless you, Sir, you have added 3 more speeds to my Cannondale Topstone Carbon 4 and you’ve earned yourself a lifetime fan! Thank you SO MUCH!
The absolute best video on youtube that covers this subject. Somehow everyone else including the big channels like park tools manages to make it seem more complicated than it needs to be.
This really is the best made video on the topic I've seen. You even simulate the potential issues that you will be fixing through indexing making the whole Idea very easy to comprehend and actually allow someone with ZERO experience to understand what he will be *trying to achieve* without having done it before . Great video really, hope more people see it!
Yeah I was super anxious about doing a derailleur swap myself because in the past I got bad explanations about the workings of it and messed up my gears. With just this 8 minute video I have a brand new Shimano kid running perfectly. Thank you so much.
Lol. Right? It's literally just a couple of screws touching and a few twists away. But this channels is a stratosphere away from others in terms of clarity. 🎉
Without a doubt the single best video on getting a rear derailleur set up properly! Just got a new bike and was struggling with bad shifting on my first ride. Managed to get it running perfectly in less than 10 minutes while watching this! Unreal video, thanks a lot for putting this out there!
Best how-to rear derailleur video on the net. The use of a 4 mm Allen key as a measurement tools for the b screw is a nice touch. Clear concise precise, thanks for taking the guesswork out of what can be frustrating process...
Thank you so much - it finally clicked for me when I watched your video. Those simple graphics summarizing "turn clockwise to decrease the tension and move the jockey wheel right" is what I needed!
I watched so many videos about adjusting front and rear derailleur but they are all confusing, like they don't want to let you know to adjust them 100% right. Videos from buycycle guys are perfect. Thank you!
Was halfway up Mount Shasta this morning and my two lowest gears kept slipping. Found this video and it saved my day! Pulled over, had it diagnosed and fixed in 10min. Back on the road and atop the Mount soon after. Thanks so much!
THE best tutorial I have every seen on dialing in your shifting. My Casati XCR with Campagnolo Chorus 12-speed shifts brilliantly and quietly. Thanks, Amico!
My first comment ever on YT, but this vid deserves one! Absolute fantastic video!! Makes the corresponding GCN and ParkTool videos look like nonsense gibberish. Thanks a lot!
I love PT’s Calvin but this guy explained it better and more concisely than the PT guys or anyone else. I hope he does more lessons. Hes got the talent and the brains to make it digestible.
I've watched quite a lot of videos on bike maintenance and I try to do everything on my own. I can honestly say that your video is hands down the best that I've seen of all the videos on adjusting and indexing rear derailleurs. All this time I've been looking for this one video on rear derailleurs that explains everything in a clear manner and with the right camera angles and I can tell you now this is the only video on this subject that I'll be coming back to every time I need to service my bikes. Well done and thank you sir.
I have never been able to do this (silly as it sounds ) been MTB for over 15 years! This is by far the most Easiest and fully Comprehensive Tutorial on YOU TUBE , Thank you my Friend 🙏
Man, you are my hero. The method with pulling the derailleur by hand to the lowest gear is just perfect, I have not ever seen this method before and it works absolutely perfect!!!! Thank yoU!!!
That's fantastic to hear! We're delighted our method worked so well for you. It's all about sharing what works best, and we're thrilled it made a difference for you. Happy riding! 🚴♂👍
This is the most rewarding and clear bike derailleur video I've watched in the last 5 hours. I've been looking for a solution to my rear derailleur top jockey popping noise to no awhail. And so far it's either cleaning the chain, or all the solutions in this video. Thank you for taking the time to make such a clear video. I feel confident in being able to do this at home now. Just need to get some tools. I got my bike yesterday, and I hooked it to a trainer today and the chain started making noises.
Crazy how I saw hundred other videos and still couldn't get the indexing and limiting right but this one video helped me ace this in 5 minutes. Legendary stuff. I am now waiting for the next video on the front derailleur adjustment. Keep helping my friend. God Bless!!
I totally agree with the other commentors. This is the BEST video I've found for understanding how to adjust the derailleur. I'm upgrading both the freewheel and the derailleur on my ebike and needed to find out how to adjust it. I watched many videos on the subject, but it still didn't "click" for me until I saw your video. You make it seem so simple and the key is I actually understand it. I'm excited now to do the adjustments and get my bike shifting smoothly. Thank you very much for the clear video and instructions on how to do this. A++ 👍
I tried adjusting my derailer watching a couple of different videos and just couldn't get it correct and it seemed so tedious. This video made it a breeze and had my derailer adjusted and shifting smoothly in no time. As a new to biking person your this video made it clear and simple.
I completely learned so much in this video that I did not know before. I have been riding a long time and should have watched this video like 20 years ago.
I've been sifting through videos, scratching my head, and screaming at the walls for almost 2 weeks trying to figure this out without confusion. I really wish I had found your video sooner. Thank you so much my friend! Great video!
YES!!!.. Someone that eliminates the tension In the cable first, before adjusting the higher/lower limit screw... There's a few videos that doesn't tell you to take tension out of the cable first..... Park tool video is just as good.
Never adjusted Derailleur before and was pretty clueless on how to do it so always paid the bike store to do it. Your video was not only easy to follow but worked perfectly and has saved me money, so many thanks indeed for taking the time to make it. Much appreciated.
This proves again that just because you know what you are doing, you arent necessarily good at communicating that knowledge. I've tried fixing my gearbox thingy for the past 2 days and every "explainer" video I watched somehow made it worse and left me more insecure about what to do or how to do it. this was the first and only video in the astonishing sea of videos on this topic that left me fully informed and finally able to fix my bike. Thanks. The closeup shots and graphical elements where especially useful to me in finally understanding what each screw does and how to adjust them properly.
like many have said, this video has helped me understand the rear derailleur like the back of my hand, i have a marlin 4 and thought that the gap between rear cassette and derailleur was too close and sure enough it was, so this helped get all that back in order! huge thanks and great editing/videography showing exactly what each screw does and how to correct it.
This video is one of the best "how to" videos I have ever seen. Following it, I was able to perfectly adjust my rear derailleur. Thank you very much indeed. Well done!
Ditto. I trashed my derailleur in an accident, all local bikeshops were busy, I and this was THE best of the many videos I found. Very well filmed. He didn't obscure the part he was talkinn about, erc.
I had to replace a trigger shifter. This video helped me get everything back to working order. It was uncomplicated and worked perfectly. Thank you for posting this.
Thanks for the fine explanation! I’ve always been perplexed by indexing but now I at least have done it once…and to the point where I have no more ghost shifting. This is on a brand new bike that was shipped to me. 2x11 Shimano GRX….was ghost shifting like crazy in the middle gears, like 5-7…and mostly in the small front chainring. Now it shifts great, except for this: I can’t get enough tension off the cable to get it to shift into the smallest cog on the cassette. And it’s not up against the limit screw. Still plenty of room there for a shift. I just can’t physically rotate the cable barrel any farther clockwise. It won’t budge.
I have watch several ok videos on derailleur adjustment but they there were incomplete and fully useful. This video is much better than all that I have seen so far by a lot. The colored cogs and limiter info very good. The section that helped me a lot was taking off the cable and moving the derailleur by hand. That made understand more so I could isolate my issue. Thank you.
honestly I've found the easiest way is to remove the chain, remove the shift cable from the derailleur and then adjust the derailleur. I just got a new derailleur a few days ago and of course it wasn't dialed in out of the box. I installed it without the chain or shift cable attached and just adjusted the limit screws that way by eying the alignment of the jockey wheel with the highest and lowest cog. It took me literally 1 minute and once the shift cable was attached and the chain put on my shifting was/is perfect. This is also a nice technique because since the shift cable isn't attached you can reset the barrel adjustors making future adjustments alot easier.
seen a dozen of rear adjustment here on youtube and this one is by far the most easy to comprehend from a newbie point of view! well done @buycycle...thanks! and subscribed done!
I just adjusted my rear derailleur by watching your video and saved myself cash! Excellent video. I will be saving this one to my favorites for later! Great content, Thankyou!!
My fatal mistakes all this while: 1. 1:09 NOT detaching the cable as the very 1st step 2. 4:48 NOT backing up the barrel adjuster by 1 turn (counter-clockwise), prior to re-attaching the cable. This video is the best!
Once you get used to the accent, the video was beautifully presented, clear and concise. Arguably, the best rear derailleur adjustment video on RUclips.
Brilliant Video . Two things that I have had that caused erratic shifting / 1 bent hanger gears work but shift badly. 2 worn sticky gear cable .The gears seem to index then they go out of correct setting. You can check this when the chain is on the wrong cog by pulling on the exposed gear cable and letting it spring back to see if the rear mech goes to a different place if the cable is sticky the mech will go to a different position if the cable is OK it should return to same position
You don't understand how much this helped me. I recently got a new cassette and I wasn't able to go into my highest and lowest gear, and had weird noises when peddling. But thanks to you I no longer have these problems
thank you. my bike wouldn't go into the high cog in rear. I disconnected cable like you said to check for limit, but it turns out I had the cable a lil too tight, so kept it from going to smallest cog.
Between learning high is small and low is the biggest (gear ratios) it was confusing enough. This video is greatly informative. Woot woot for you, brother man.
Awesome video! I watched a lot of others and I couldn't get mine to index correctly. Your video was simple and easy to understand, I had it done in less than 5 minutes! Thanks for a great video!
This video just saved me! Every other video left me still confused and I was just going to bring it to a shop. Now I’m excited to try it myself! Great video, thanks man!
I can’t believe how clear this video was. PERFECT
Glad you enjoyed it!
I agree with you 100% 👍🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I think he's created the single best resource for gear adjustment.
The best explanation I've come across in years
The gears on my ORBEA rise are Gx and making horrendous noise in all gears ⚙️ exercises 4th , is this fixable?
This is THE best video on the internet for instructions on adjusting and indexing a rear derailleur. Super clear, good camera shots, everything. I really appreciate this content
thanks for that! glad you found it helpfull!
Big time!
Totally agree. I watched several videos on this topic and didn't get my questions answered. This one answers them all. Thank you!
I agree! Very clear - concise - covered everything in the correct order!

I am a new cyclist and this literally enabled me to do it myself. Perfect video with the correct angles and explanation.
Perfect camera angles - made it so easy to understand the process you were describing! Thanks a million!

U just saved me a huge headache. I've been messing with mine for an hour and a half . After watching this video, it took 15 minutes.
Thanks

@@buycycle My derailleur only seems to want to move up and down. It doesn't shift when I move it. How do you move it side to side like that?

This is simple and straight to the point. No time waisting with so much introduction . Excellent video
same here, I tried other videos, this one is the best, easy no more no less.
That's awesome to hear! Keeping it simple yet effective is what we aim for. Thanks for the shout-out, and happy riding with those newfound skills!

Easily the best video iv'e seen to explain the dynamics of setting up the Rear Derailleur, concise, straight forward and clear, superb work sir.
i saw a few other videos before this but this is the BEST. His explanation with diagrams and markings makes it easy to understand.
I spent time on park tools channel and others.... This is BY FAR the simplest and best how to I've found! Thank you
You need to do one on front derailleurs. This is the new standard, this guy doing it.
Glad you enjoyed it! Front derailleur video is now out! ruclips.net/video/WI2DxdHHIGk/видео.html

By far the best video out there on adjusting the rear derailleur. Thanks!
Spot on; many thanks as I'm a mechanical nuff nuff and following your instructions fixed everything perfectly 🙂
Still coming back to this video every time I need it and it's amazingly instructive! Congratulations on a fantastic resource.
Glad it’s helpful! Thanks so much!
this is the most detail real derailluer adjustment i've ever seen. Thank you for making this video
You are very welcome!
My fatal mistakes all this while:
1. 1:09 NOT detaching the cable as the very 1st step
2. 4:48 NOT backing up the barrel adjuster by 1 turn (counter-clockwise), prior to re-attaching the cable.
This video is the best!
Once you get used to the accent, the video was beautifully presented, clear and concise. Arguably, the best rear derailleur adjustment video on RUclips.
What was wrong with his accent? 😅
So glad I found this. Finally this topic now makes complete sense. clear and concise.

thank you. my bike wouldn't go into the high cog in rear. I disconnected cable like you said to check for limit, but it turns out I had the cable a lil too tight, so kept it from going to smallest cog.
Clear cut information and straight forward explanation with clearly visible actions in video. Any one can easily do the RD settings. Thanks a lot.
Coming back to this video on how to index my rear derailluer for the third time. Just perfect, thank you!
Between learning high is small and low is the biggest (gear ratios) it was confusing enough. This video is greatly informative. Woot woot for you, brother man.
Clear, smooth narrative and great camera views make this highly instructive. Bien fait.
After this video, you deserve a subscription, it’s been done
Best video i have seen for explaining how to index gears, so easy to understand and far better than gcn, parktool or any other cycling youtube channel.
Now I can save few bucks and time going to bike shop because of this video. Thank you! From Philippines.
ur a legend. my gears went from being so cooked (the highest 4 weren't shifting at all and it was jumping two at a time) to working perfectly
That's fantastic to hear! Glad to be of help. Smooth gears make for an even smoother ride-enjoy cruising on your now perfectly working gears!
Thanks, informative video that helped me enormously. Took the mystery out of what was a daunting task.
Best explanation video I've seen, straight to the point and no waffle, thank you
I had to do it twice... but i did it!!!!
SOOOOOO HAPPY. Thanks man. Really appreciated. It has always been my dream to service my own bike.
Most clear, well explained, and to the point video I've seen so far.
Glad it was helpful!
Perfect video thanks! So many other channels skip important information but you've nailed it clearly and with on screen images for reference
Best tutorial! Thank you so much. Watched lots of others, but this one is by far the best and helped me out indexing my derailleur.
Glad to hear it! We're happy our tutorial hit the mark for you. Happy cycling! 🚴♂👍

This is the video that will help you, get the job done! Many thanks!!
Simple yet detailed explanation to tune the rear derailleur. Thanks!
The best explanation I ever came across. Well done 🎉
This video just saved me! Every other video left me still confused and I was just going to bring it to a shop. Now I’m excited to try it myself! Great video, thanks man!
Excellent video. Super clear, concise while not missing any important detail. Got it right the first time. Thanks!
I thank God for this video,, it'll help even generations to come...very clearly ❤
Awesome. Had a problem with ghost shifting, turned out to be my tension was off. Thanks man.
Best video I have found on this. Amazing work, thank you!! ❤
Know I understand how to make the high and low limit adjustments and know what they are doing. Awesome! Thank You!
Happy to help!
This video is very straightforward. Best tutorial i've seen
I've been using the Park Tool video for years, but i learned a bunch watching this method.
