Sick series Boys, watched the whole way through, left a thumbs up as well. Stoked for the next one! Such an original idea and You and Sabo are a solid duo.
Advancing the timing on quads can sometimes work, but often times leads to weird running issues, one of them being an odd idle (which Sabo assumed was the aftermarket cam) and flame out issues. They seem like jetting issues when it's happening, so most people mess with the carb a bunch, get it to "good enough" and set the idle higher and the pilot richer so it doesn't flame out and then send it.
Having the timing too far advanced also gives the motor the characteristic "frantic" type feel with a very hard torque hit, but little to no over-rev. Almost as if the power just stops past a certain rpm. Many "just needs a re-jet" dirtbikes/atv's for sale with aftermarket cyliinders and/or altered timing really just have a mechanical issue that cannot be tuned out with simple jetting. In fact, the first clue that an engine has something wrong internally is that for some reason, you can't get the jetting/idle correct, no matter what carbs you put on it or what jets are in it. It feels rich and burbly but also backfires, or it seams lean but the plug is black.
In addition, non-oem cylinders can often times be taller or shorter, and if they're shorter, not only will the cam timing be retarded, you might have too little squish clearance, so when the motor gets nice and hot (for example, racing in tight woods, like you were) you get knock, and eventually it goes kaboom. That being said, the engine failure you experienced could be anything; as we all know, engines can be fickle beasts, especially when modified. The only way to know for sure is a teardown, and I'm pretty excited to see that.
For these reasons, I don't install aftermarket cylinders. After your measure them on a surface plate/height gauge (to compare to the original), check the piston to valve clearance, and also check the squish clearance, it becomes an all day job. You'd be surprised how often aftermarket cylinders are .010"-.015" shorter than OEM, which throws everything off. Then you have to order a thicker gasket or have a custom one made, and a one day job turns into multiple days + a few weeks of downtime with the quad sitting. No thanks. A proper head porting and bigger carb will do much more than a big bore will anyway, and you get to keep 95% of the factory reliability.
I know you and Sabo have been wrenching a long time, so please don't take this as a lecture, it's mainly for people that watch this video and go "weird, these same things happened to me too".

Doc im SUPER impressed with this write up, as you might know from a few vids i used to be an undegreed engineer for a decade and have been wrenching for over 22 years total ✊ so im with you on everything you said, we could definetely have an extremely long phone call with all of this kind of detail LOL. The raptor actually didnt exactly blow up, it had an internal failure but outside of the rotating assembly however it did affect the rotating assembly and i do believe it was my fault for no loctiting certain bolts 👊. Too much for text though! But i make mistakes like anyone else 🙌 love the info you provided and ill be sure to check cylinder height in the future as i was unaware that they could be that far off! I do usually check the piston to deck surface though when putting them together to make sure the piston doesnt exceed the deck surface. Also the timing, i was suspect that was causing the sporatic idle however outside of the original idling issues i had previously talked about in the beggining vids, after putting a 35 pilot in and running non china fuel screws, i got her dialed in very well. She doesnt die at idle anymore and she rips bro! Theres no lag bog, flame outs, or rpm power dropoffs etc, she just straight hauls ass all the way through the rpm 👊 id be happy to discuss any of the details with you if you wanna send me a number to my gmail in the description brother. I forget which video it was, but you talked about shaking the plugs loose, sucking in air and melting down a cylinder, and that was something I'd never even thought of. A guy messaged me on IG who blew up his CB350 multiple times, and both times the left cylinder just looked like it got wayyy too hot. I bet you that's what was happening to him!

Raptors are lit they have a unique sound and powerband. If you can finesse the suspension and steering to keep from shit whipping you they are very solid.

@@StupidFastJohn that sucks! I rebuilt both my raptor's and they run mint! I never have a issue and I run them hard!! I mean dude I can do between 79-82mph consistently with them. And I can do it in about ten seconds or so from a DIG! They are insane!! I weigh 140lbs so it's like I'm not even on it it's so fast. But my 05 troy lee edition predator 500 accelerated harder from a dig! But that was about it. Then I pulled him in hard and flew by him. And I run 14-40 gearing on the raptor and stock on the predator!

I’ve owned no less than 7 660 since 2001 and they’ve literally been the most reliable atv I’ve owned overall and I mainly mean sport atv.
And I’ve been throwing a leg over a quad since I was 4… Ive owned several 400ex, 300ex, 250x, 1 tecate, warriors, banshee, 1 ds650, wolverines, raptor 250, yzf450, Kfx450, crf450, 1 raptor 700 and a slew of utility atvs.. Not to say that some others weren’t or aren’t reliable but the 660 just always made it back to the trailer or garage without help! They have there handling quirks and some things that can be made better but they hold up.. I’ve seen others who have ran them without water in the radiator or low on oil with water added to the oil tank and they kept running. I had one tranny issue with a 01 model that had been abused before I got it, but with the new gear with updated dogs it never had another issue even after I put in a big bore kit. The 660 engine was notoriously reliable in the motorcycle that it originated in!
To the case of the 700, I can’t say anything bad about it either, but I only put about 120hrs on a used one that already had several hours on it and it never had the first issue.. The ds650 was overall good too but Ive only owned one! 🤷🏼♂️

For 400$ I’m guessing it’s been rode hard and put up wet and dirty but they are actually one of the most resilient and reliable quads I’ve ever owned!

The major difference between the 2 was composure, the 700 didnt want to wheelie as bad as the 660 because of the singarm position under your butt. But the 660 is definetely more violent power lol 👊🙌

It feels like it has a lack of power, and iv went thro the hole damn bike but I havnt cracked the motor open yet. figured I'm a run it till I have to crack it open or if it lasts thro the summer open er up over the winter. and even tho I think there should be more power she still rips and fires up right away every time. maybe I'm just tripin! lol
