I like to take a zippered U-Shaped pillow case (designed for travel pillow) and instead stuff it with a sweater or puffy jacket. This counts as a pillow, so doesn’t need to be placed in suitcase. And, I use it as a soft squishy pillow during flight

OK, Laurie, we are back travelling. Just returned from Japan and Singapore.
Looking at your videos again, I had forgotten how encouraging and bright you are.
I could listen to your videos just to hear your voice and humour.
You are a very seasoned traveller, but your humility and empathy constantly shine through.
Everyone loves an expert who is learning and wants to learn from her audience.
    You fit that description exactly.
    Love it.
Thanks for doing this - I am a man, so the examples work less well, but the ideas work perfectly and have meant that I could pick up a few pieces which will perform better than what I had.
There are a couple of trousers that owe you their existence in my travel rotation!!
Love what you do and, most importantly, HOW you do it.
Thanks for all your efforts, and I wish you all the success possible. See you again in another video.
    So glad I am subbed!!

My black skechers work well with a black legging/skirt combo.. I agree.. a scarf or necklace elevates the whole look. thanks for your ideas.. and thanks for getting to the point so quickly!

Based on your tips just trial packed for a 2 week tour of Edinburgh, London and Paris. My husband and I used your recommended compression cubes. Wow. I have space left to maybe buy some perfume in Paris. I'm traveling out of Orlando. It's often hot in the airport so I'm planning to wear a black camisole with a shelf bra, a long cardigan to have for the plane, some lightweight black pants and my sturdy black "teacher" shoes. My carryon will have a down jacket stuffed into its pocket. I've had too many freezing overnight flights to Europe. I also bought a pair of Duluth Trading pants that can tolerate the rain. I look forward to finally using all of the Travel Tips by Laurie. Thanks a lot.

Hi Laurie, I travel about monthly, not always exotic locations. Through the years I have honed my travel outfits and essentials so that packing is simpler. As soon as I return from a trip, I replace, refill, launder certain items and pre pack them for my next trip. I keep a spreadsheet for different types of trips (Disney, Cruises, Business, long flights) so that I know what worked best the last trip. Thanks for your videos.

My normal airport outfit is a cute shirt (normally one with a cute design on it), jeans or leggings, compression socks, and tennis shoes. I’ve never worn shorts in the airport because I’m wearing compression socks and I think it would look dumb to have knee compression socks with shorts (that and any time I’ve flown it’s been in the fall or winter)

18 days in a carryon - I 100% believe it, and soon your husband will, too😉: last Christmas, I was able to pack everything for 4 weeks except my pillow (I have a very finicky neck, so I have to use a very particular pillow), medical stuff (for longer trips (>2 1/2 weeks), those already always get packed in a separate bag that doesn't count as carryon allowance), and knee-high Muck boots in my 19" carryon and 20L backpack, and I still only did laundry once a week (which is how often I normally do it anyway, even when on a long road trip like I went on last fall (3 1/2 weeks on the road, combo of hotels, camping, and staying with friends/family) - all my clothes fit in one load), while still having all the layers I needed. I now no longer have to bring the pillow back and forth (got a second one to leave at my parents' house), and I could forego the Muck boots if I needed to (which is saying something for a MN winter, but I prefer wearing hiking boots rather than Muck boots for the driving days on a winter road trip, and my Muck boots need to be resealed on the sole in a couple places anyway, so it's not like I would be playing in the snow, so no real need for snow boots - good waterproof hiking boots and warm wool socks are enough for me).
On another note, I live less than 3 hrs from Grand Teton NP (makes for an easy day trip, though I haven't been since June last year), so your mention of "out west" has me intrigued.

My last flight day, 5 1/2 weeks ago, I wore stretchy synthetic black cargo capris that I've had for years, a v-neck T-shirt, quarter socks, sandals (can wear them for anything from hosing off the driveway to a wedding, so didn't need any other shoes that trip), and a full zip lightweight hoodie. But the capris weren't breathable enough (all 4 airports were really hot inside), so this time (next Monday) I'm going to wear navy cargo joggers (I do love me those cargo pockets) in a cotton blend knit, either a v-neck or shortsleeve button-down (still haven't decided which - v-neck is cooler but button-down gives me a pocket for my boarding passes), quarter socks, and sneakers, with the same lightweight hoodie.
This trip is a bit different in that, since the zipper on my 19" needs repair, and one more flight being manhandled (or one more time bouncing down the baggage claim chute at MSP) will break the legs off my 23" (they're already cracked from getting manhandled 5 years ago; plus, it's too big to fit on the front of my wheelchair), I'm using my 17" suitcase that I got as a gift when I was 6 (those 3 are my only suitcases - I don't own a standard carryon size one, because I can fit everything I need into the 19"). So instead of packing everything I would normally bring, I'm only packing what I either need en route, or can't buy/order and have shipped there; but it works out, though, because several of those things are things I already wished I had a second one of (or multiples of, in the case of socks) anyway, that I could leave at my parents' house (or that will be replacing things that I already keep there). Hopefully this will be the only trip where I have no choice but to take my tiny suitcase, since the plan is to repair the 19" at Christmas, and I'm fine with the 19" going on a road trip (Christmas is always a road trip for me) in its current state of disrepair (since I can control what happens to it the entire time), just not flying.
So it'll be just my 17" suitcase and 20L backpack for 3 1/2 weeks. I've already packed up literally everything I'll be taking once already, so I already know it will fit into those, and that those will fit on my chair (the suitcase is just barely big enough to span the width between my luggage forks, so the luggage strap will be actually holding it on, not merely holding it still like it was with my 19" last month). My regular laptop is in the shop getting a hinge repaired and won't be ready before I leave, so I'll have to take my backup one with me instead, which is significantly heavier and thicker (elitebook 2540p vs. pavillion 13), but it should still fit just fine in my backpack.

I would rather not bury/hide my cell phone in my personal item which will be out of my hands. I would like to keep it on my person at all times but visible to Security. Is this allowed?

Hi, Laurie! I've been watching and enjoying your videos for probably around 1 1/2-2 years, and they helped me SO much to prepare for my first road trip in years back in June (3 adults in a Chevy Sonic, so space-saving was crucial). In a few weeks, I'll be taking my first flight since 2006 to Phoenix, and I will be taking one checked bag, a carry-on and a personal item. Thanks to all your tips and tricks, I already have all my lists made, organizational method planned out, and if I wanted to, I could pack up and leave tomorrow...so excited! :-D

If you’re coming to Canada in the winter, consider that Wisconsin is further north than many places in Ontario, Canada. The weather is similar to upstate NY or Michigan. In the summer it can be very hot!! Depending on where you are travelling to, the weather varies, so do your research. Our climate is not like ICELAND!!! Iceland’s average temperature is 12C (if I’m not mistaken). In July in Ontario, for eg. It can be 90F. If travelling to British Columbia, the weather is like Seattle. The East coast is different again, especially Newfoundland/Labrador. Do your research so you know.

First off, thanks for more good info and your tee shirts are adorable!
Taking off tomorrow for a Viking Rhine River cruise. We'll be starting in Basel, Switzerland and finishing in Amsterdam and The Hauge. In between is Germany and France. When I started my purchases and packing list, the temps were in the 90s. Now the weather forecast is 70s and rain... Like pretty much every day. Did I purchase waterproof shoes? No! I do have a raincoat and small umbrella. I'll be taking extra shoes so I can change for the next day. Hopefully this plan works. Airport outfit plan is to wear my black stretchy jeans and a dressy t shirt with my black cardigan. Still debating on wearing/taking my cute white lace up Keds that are in fashion to wear with a couple of dresses. Walking tours are usually less than 3 hours. I know comfort over fashion... Ugh! I have two pair of Skechers a black and a white pair since the majority of my clothing is white and black. First European trip for me as an adult. Hoping my choices work for this trip! Praying for no delays or lost luggage. The upside is that the rain is allowing us to stay on the ship and not have to ship swap or bus to destinations. Grateful for that.
