I would've preferred if John went with this story. It offers a solid explanation for why he's physically capable, skilled with a gun and also reflects his real past.
I think the reason why the devs didn't go with this explanation was to emphasize that John was lacking in not being found out, probably going with a worse explanation out of fear of being found out. Most times people are not experts in hiding, that's litteraly how most criminals are found out lol.
@theenglishponey1295 That's my point. My issue with John in the epilogue is that they clearly went out of their way to depict him as a clumsy oaf when it came to adapting to his new life and coming up with an identity. Not that everything should've gone smoothly for him, but at least have him be able to maintain his identity and story, not changing them every scene.
@@theenglishponey1295Nah his new explanation just makes John out to look like an idiot. This explanation is way more in character with how John’s supposed to be in rdr1, which is only 4 years later lol. Rockstar did this on purpose to make Arthur stand out more considering John in the epilogue is completely ruined and retconned both characteristically and physically.
I can’t believe they cut this. It fits in so well and it’s something that John would actually say. It provides him with explanation on how he is physically capable and good with a gun. The Epilogue is wasted potential.
Basically he is on about the gang as he says his commanding officer (Dutch) lost his mind. But instead he describes it as being in the army as a cover story. Interesting

i don't think he was in the army. he was just making an excuse that if a shootout starts (which it did) he would have an answer to the things people will ask about his skills during the shootout. he doesn't want to give away his outlaw past so he says he was in the army
It doesn't make sense to me why they'd cut this line when it instantly provides a better and more plausible explanation for why he's physically capable.
This wouldve been a far better story to go with, also would've had leeway for dickens to not believe him. Asking questions like "Which war?", "Which batallion?" Maybe he was a vet too so hes more inquisitive whilst having john stumble but having him seem less of an oaf
Guys, he's not talking about the army. He was never in the army. He's talking about his time in the gang. See, why this dialogue was cut now? Half of us don't even notice what he's talking about. 😂
