My favorite bit about the "Notice meeee!" "Noooo!" joke is how petty Vegeta is. You're not really ignoring someone if you reply to them, but little Veggie just HAS to get the last word in, no matter what.
Oh my God... I never thought of it like that. You just made a funny joke even more funny for me 🤣🤣

My best friend in high school would randomly send me that clip all the time. It's just the Reverb and the sound of Vegeta being so far away when he says "No!" that kills me
My favorite part is that that line was used in Dragonball Budokai Abridged whenever Trunks won a round.
My favorite part about the Notice Me bit is that Vegeta answers with only one word. Then when we cut back later, Goku says "Ooh, only on two words." Trunks made progress :D
"This is supposed to be a place of fun!"
Piccolo being so distressed by the ruined joy of children is so hilarious to me because he's technically still a child. A very socially deprived one at that.

Piccolo: I was 8 years old the first time I died. And I went to Hell. So I was an 8 year old in Hell. Fought a galactic imperial tyrant when I was 9. Almost died again, then too. Then when I was around 14 when I would have died fighting some twin cyborgs in another timeline, but things ended up working out differently in this one.
Taka calling Dragonball “Journey to the West Abridged” is the best missed joke I’ve heard in a bit.

I like Lani's theory that it is not that Goku doesn't know how strong he is, it is that he gains power too fast and doesn't know how to adjust fast enough
Especially true, since Goku just recovered from almost dying in that scene... and we all know what *almost* dying does to a Sayian's biology.

I always loved the subtle detail of 17 being kinda mad about 18 blowing up a chunk of the forest, since he becomes a park ranger later on.
Part of Trunks' arc in Abridged is having his legendary superhero-like idea of the Z Fighters broken down in the most brutal way as he realizes that instead of noble, stalwart warriors they're really just a bunch of idiots and/or assholes who all seem to hate each other.
DBZA Trunks is a walking example of why the phrase "Never meet your heroes" exists.
I think it's also cool to explore his specific dynamic with his father. At the time when he dies, Vegeta would probably be seen as an anti-hero but definitely would be remembered for standing up to the androids. Plus, Bulma would never want to say she had a kid with an evil man. So, in re-tellings to her son about his deceased father, it's natural that she'd make him sound more heroic than he was. Trunks' entire view, not just of the Z fighters, but ESPECIALLY his dad, is absolutely shattered in this arc. Which I think makes him even more no-nonsense in his return because he's also disillusioned about heroics
And then there's Krillin who is the most grounded, but flawed in such reasonable ways it's very case by case if you can be mad at him. Makes sense he and Trunks have such a healthy dynamic.
I still say that “Either Goku’s awake or Moses has brought the Jews. Either way my pantry is not full enough” is one of the cleverest jokes you guys have ever written for just how well it works on so many levels
I love the history themed jokes, episode 8 of Hellsing also had a couple of good ones
I did the notice me joke at a convention. Lani yelled no back. Highlight of the day.
Tien being the one to realize the lack of dragon balls is really fitting as he's the one to point out how they trivialize death before.
Oddly the joke *“When you fall off the horse, you get right back up, and you eat that horse”* is equally hilarious and very motivational.🤣🤣👏🏽👏🏽

18's line, "Or we kill you, oh my god!" gets me every time. Also, I really enjoy the theory that 16 is the reason they aren't evil in this timeline.

I mean isnt that also kinda implied on the original, 16 wasnt there and he was kind of their moral compas
I think the canon explanation was since they didn't fight Gero in the Trunks timeline they had their morals deleted before being released, which is why they destroyed everything for no reason.

Chichi is absolutely tough. She later on went on to pound him in his super saiyan form for like a week straight.
Honestly, the "K, bye" and "It wasn't a no" aspect feels like it's also very telling of the actual closeness of Goku and Chi-Chi's relationship. He knows what she wants, knows that she's giving him a free pass on what is normally behaviour that ticks her off, and so he casually concedes without any fuss. Meanwhile Chi-Chi knows that Goku's too blunt and simple to have a deep 'should we have a second child' conversation and that trying to have such a conversation in the first place would just go right over his head or be abysmally frustrating to work through. So she accepts his reply at its face value, because she understands that if Goku had a problem he would have made it very clear and evident.
I never knew how to verbalize why that scene worked so well for them. But it's exactly this. If Goku had a problem with it, he would've said something. And Goku left, having made a concession in trade for "getting away with" something he'd usually have to negotiate with ChiChi for. It was a negotiation that is unique to their relationship, and they both got what they wanted from it. It was a cool little look into their relationship
All this time, Vegeta’s “What the f*ck is that?!!” being directed at Mr. Popo has until now always flown over my head. XD
I always assumed it was in reference to what Popo said, not Popo himself.

As a fan of pre-Z Dragon Ball, "He knows the Mafuba" is one of my favorite punchlines in the whole show.
I didn't see pre z dragon ball, (honestly I was at the generation where Kai ended up being the first thing I watched, )but I did watch Super, and recognized that was what piccolo was talking about there

I like to imagine that if TFS did DBS Super Hero, Dr. Hedo would be trying to stop Dr. Briefs for his mad scientist crimes rather than Bulma for having alien friends.
Ya know... that... makes absolute sense... Abridged Hedo would try to be like Dr. Light and make Megaman and Roll... to go against Dr. Briefs (Wily) for making abominations and breaking every moral code possible. That and possibly some Geneva Convention lines.
Then how will they handle Gamma-1 and Dr. Hedo making peace with Dr. Briefs after Cell Max, as they obviously make peace at that point? Would it be something like “we both committed war crimes, you have no moral ground, Dr. Hedo” or something like that and then they drop it?

Nah, Dr. Hedo is aware of Dr. Briefs' experiments and thinks Bulma is using her alien friends as test subjects for her own and wants to try to save them.
Dr. Briefs is more terrifying when you realize he's untouchable because his daughter is friends with/married to the world's most terrifyingly strong people. Like Goku literally prevented two major regime changes on earth, as a child. King Furry is in charge of society but only because Dr. Briefs allows it.
I don't think Goku or Piccolo would overthrow the world government just because Dr Briefs asked them to

@@noahkarpinski1824 He doesn't need to ask them to overthrow the world government. He just has to convince them to not stop him.
My theory is that Dr. Briefs was former RR Army, but either Retired or had a falling out. He worked on the engineering for the androids, but when he figured out the capsule technology that’s where he left.

Trunks whole expedition into the past is the definition of “Never meet your heroes”.

My favorite part of these episodes is rapidly becoming where Scott casually mentions itty bitty little background edits he did that even the rest of the team never knew about and the other two being shocked then seeing it.
It is well done I doubt even the audience manage to catch them
8:22 I like that theory as it adds a positive spin to Yamcha’s suicide joke - since he did NOT kill himself in this universe, he contributed in preventing everyone else’s downfall.
I like to think that the reason Kami and Nail know about drugs while piccolo doesn't is because of the time they spent with Mr. Popo and Guru respectively.
The whole humor around Dr. Briefs is some of my favorite stuff, it takes the idea of an amoral omnidisciplinary scientist to its most logical extreme while still tying him to the heroes' side. It's only the fact that Dr. Briefs has no ambition (since he already has everything he wants) that keeps him from becoming a villain, and I love that characterization,
also love how out of all people, fucking Yajerobe is the one that gets under his skin.

I don't think that's how athmospheric drag works, though. If anything, she would've went up in flames as soon as Goku let her go and as the air gets thinner and friction reduces, the flames go off.
Anyway, I think she's alive because the Ki Goku accidentally transferred to her that speed her up, also kept her alive.
Here's a way to explain it, Scott: if you know what the Mafuba is, you are Kami and Piccolo. If you don't, you're Nail.
For awhile, I was Nail, but now I am Kami in this instance.
My favorite thing about Nail not knowing about the Mafuba is that if he did know about it, he'd probably constantly berate Piccolo for not using it. Constantly bringing it up during times of crisis while also being a little bitter about them not using it on Frieza.
Kami: "Any last _last_ ditch efforts?"
Piccolo: "Yeah."
Nail: "Yeah, wha about the Mafu-"
Piccolo: "NAIL GUN!"
Nail: "Of course not."

I always felt like 17 took to 16 instantly as some combination of pet and little brother, but 18 didn't really care that much about him. But between 17's treatment of him and his own adorableness, she starts to warm up to him bit by bit. By the time they lose 17, 18 is now genuinely fond of him and is all "I'm not leaving without you", having come to care about him and kinda redeeming her in the process. She took longer to come around, but she still ultimately did.
I love yamcha’s “dude, don’t worry, I still have the bunker” idk why it just makes me laugh
He probably got the doomsday bunker after he was revived in the Freeza arc because not only he’s heart broken when Bulma broke up with him but also he felt like he’s the team punching bag so when danger comes he can just hide away.

The least horrible Bikini clone theory is that when the current clone dies, he doesn't bother doing some kind of mind or brain transfer and straight up tells the new clone that she is the new wife and mother...
Her name is Panchy.
That's...somehow even worse I think because it means he kill his new wife every time. At least if he mind/brain transfer he's trying to save/keep his original wife (which makes him slightly less horrible)

I love that Cell disappears in this episode, it almost makes you forget about him and then he just shows up and drops "Enough" and you're like oooooohhhhhhhhhh he's been BUSY
And it adds so well to the horror movie monster tropes they used to build his character! In all the slasher and monster type flicks the monster appears, murders a character or five, and then disappears for a good 15 minutes of screen time or more until their next move. Cell is doing that. And, as you say, getting stronger while offscreen…
@@electricbluetiramisu3713 I love the first form Imperfect Cell. Definitely the best form of Cell, which ironically Toriyama wanted to keep him as until Yu Kondo his editor at the time wanted him to transform.
The entire episode has us thinking, "where's Imperfect Cell?"

In a later episode where Briefs is chasing Yajirobi for eating the "eggs" in the basement. It goes:
"They weren't even that good!"
"Most of them weren't even supposed to be eaten that way!"
Which implies more on Brief's wife feeds off the baby clones to stay young. That is my headcanon.

I feel like it's more of a spoiled child situation, where they know they're in the wrong, but they also know they'll get away with it as long as it's not TOO bad.
When you realize Piccolo Tien and Yamcha we’re the only ones who didn’t actively make the situation worse.
Yamcha taking Goku home and not doing anything for the rest of the arc helped more than Krillin and Vegeta.

@@The_One_In_Blackyeah but they needed stronger fighters with goku out of commission. Plus piccolo knew they could get another guardian from namek to make a new set but he miscalculated because he wasn't aware of cell's existence.
Cell making the jab about Yamcha contributing more than Vegeta always felt like a commentary more on the whole saga, not just the Cell Games.

I do like that Mr Popo is never really rude to either Kami or Piccolo and they're always very polite to him in conversation. which really establishes a whole "let's be real here, neither of us have any friends besides each other"

6:06 Actually, it is possible for objects to burn when exiting the atmosphere if they're moving fast enough while in the lower atmosphere. Goku yeeted Chichi so hard she reached the escape velocity and then some.
Taka weirdly hovering his hand over Scott's shoulder like he hasn't decided whether to actually touch him or not shouldn't be as consistent as it is.

When this ep first aired I thought "Hype Ebonics Rhyme Chamber" was the most absurd and funniest thing I had ever heard. I couldn't help but picture them in a room dedicated to freestyling and breakdancing while Popo Dj'd.
I wish Slick Goku/Otaku D Freaku wasn't dead. Him collabing with TFS would have been hype.
Also abbreviates to HERC... but less Mr Satan in dub and more like Olibu.
And thus Goku receives another Zenkai boost from his lastest near death experience.

@s0meguy09 It was pretty vague how that works. Was it if he's *beaten* to near death, or if he's just close to dying? The only actual reference for this would be Vegeta, since most of the other Saiyans just died and were never brought back, and I'm pretty sure Goku is the only saiyan in the known lore to suffer the heart virus, but im pretty sure he did end up getting stronger after recovering. But idk, maybe someone else can fill us in.
@@toxicdemon1315 To be fair, he did suffer the heart attack when he was fighting 19, which the senzu bean only accelerated.
@@toxicdemon1315 my guess is it did work, partly because the virus is beating him up on a cellular level, but looking back to his time in the pod on Namek, where he keeps flexing whilst healing (or in DBZA, haha-ow), was him purposefully damaging himself to re-heal and get even more boost
@glebglub if thats the case, then I think it's only fair to assume that the virus *absolutely* gave him a Zenkai boost. So, as always, the margin of strength grows ever wider
Love how a 1/3rd of the dialogue in this episode is just "Hmmm" in various moods. Totally works for both the story development and character motivation.
I don't know why Roshi saying "K bye!" is so funny but it gets me every time
Taka's "truck commercial narrator" voice is astounding.
I legit watch this version of this season instead of the official one, because the quality leapt so far ahead that it’s on par and honestly a way tighter execution of the material
That is the ability of hindsight to write things tighter, dbz does it with dbz kia, some things became more streamlined with video games, fanfiction, these guys clearly hold their own, original IPs and love for the work
I like the running gag in these commentaries of Lani uncensoring every single bleeped word
Lani needs to record a cover of “voices in my head - falling in reverse” as piccolo... *it would be perfect* We haven’t heard piccolo sing since “make a man out of you”.
I like to imagine that the reason Nail knows about pot and Piccolo doesn't is either Kame's been teaching Nail about Earth while Piccolo 'meditates' or Nail's been using the internet in Piccolo's brain to read up on all sorts of things.
I love the implication of Roshi also saying “K, bye” after goku does it the same because it implies its his go to too and that Goku learned that response from roshi
It is weird how both Goku and Gohan have had prophetic dreams in the anime. Almost like they inherited something from Bardock...

The reason the "Eat that Horse" line lasts so well, after the fact, is that it was called back to in such a pivotal moment at the end. Otherwise it'd just be a funny one-off Goku-ism.

Fun Fact: Goku being able to read minds on Namek actually has a canon explanation. In the original series, Muten Roshi is also able to read minds and does so the first time he meets Goku (that's how he learns that Goku has a good heart and that he is the adopted grandson of Gohan). He explains to Goku that if someone has enough experience and keeps training to strengthen one's body _and_ mind you will eventually just be able to do it.
It took Muten Roshi literal centuries to learn it himself, but Goku's Saiyan DNA and the fact that he's been fighting his entire life enabled him to learn it in just a few years.
You can't tell my Toei didn't see this and made 17 want a boat in super because of it.
I could actually see that one being a coincidence, but I do not and will not EVER accept the idea of the scary PoPo scene in Super being a coincidence
Seeing that flash of Kami from Popo’s perspective was such an immediate knife to the heart. For all the bravado he puts on to make everyone feel beneath his notice, having to say goodbye to Kami permanently really stuck with him.

This episode has my most used quote from the series. Many, possibly most hugs I get are accompanied by a “aww, hugs are nice”. I enjoy the variety of reactions I get to that.

I've always thought Goku respects Chi-Chi so much he EXPECTS her to be able to handle his "weak" attacks. The Abridged Goku only understands respect in a fight or by strength. I do love how different people can interpret meanings in media. Also Krillin is both perfectly written and voiced. By far the best character throughout the entire series.
Also also, when Goku and Gohan teleport to Trunks and Goku says to Gohan quietly and quickly "I'll fill you in later" then INSTANTLY jumps back to his "Oh heyyyyy trunks! How's training?" What if Goku secretly is insanely smart or is a higher power above the Kais and secretly makes everything run his way... But just PLAYS stupid? I cracked the code! Lol I love this show
