Sounds like my father, giving everything to a woman much younger than him, and nothing for his kids. He was a serial cheater and whipped me a lot and could be very cold/mean. Most freeing thing is to not be beholden to some ahole who thinks they can control you with money. It was my mom for me. I had heard interviews when I was a kid, & I thought he was attempting to be funny, but as I got older I realized he was either under the influence or had a serious personality disorder.
It's always so sad to see children that were so badly treated by a parent then beat themselves up about not having a chance to make things right, when they did nothing wrong, totally heartbreaking
I’ve been there. A long story, but I once thought I was daddy’s little girl until he woke me up from sleep when I was 10 and said he’s leaving. I thought he was leaving on a railroad run, but he was literally leaving. His mistress was waiting across town and he moved out of town with her and never lived in the house again. Also, right before Christmas. He never apologized. I tried all of my life to try to be close and ‘fix’ things even until he died. We never once discussed it and even when he died at 88, he never cared that that was the most life changing and traumatic moment of my life. Once he died, I did find some peace though in knowing there is no more effort needed to do so. Ours was exactly like the Lewis family. You never knew what mood he’d be in when he drove up. Most of the time, never a good one. I feel for them.
Rubbish! His sons sponged off their mother’s $450,000 per year alimony to such a degree that she wound up broke. His children grew up enjoying every luxury. They attended the best schools. Not one of them has ever accomplished anything or worked a steady job - choosing instead to sponge off their elderly mother.
You cannot make it right with a parent like this!! Say “I love you” as much as you like-it changes nothing-they will still leave you nothing because to them you were always nothing-accept it! Move on, enjoy your life and be thankful they can now do nothing else to hurt you! You’re free!

I calmly replied that I had a good job and was paying my own bills and then some and that I didn’t need any outside help and was there anything else I could help her with while she was on the phone. I’ve never heard my mother’s voice so evil sounding. Thankfully I had done work around her for years in the way that she treated me growing up but I have to admit I was numb for the rest of the evening. When I was younger I spent countless nights trying to figure out why she was the way that she is but having me when she was 18 years old I would say she really wasn’t mature enough to be a mom and at the end of the day some people just aren’t supposed to be parents and today I’m OK with that.
So sorry. It was her personality defect. Having you older probably wouldn't have made a difference. My mom was always mean and jealous of me so I know how it feels.
Jerry Lewis was clearly a man of little integrity, with a closed mind and cold heart. His true legacy is the pain he left for his family, not the laughter he thought he left for the world.
I can say with no exaggeration that I have NEVER laughed at a single Jerry Lewis "bit" in my life, having endured countless hundreds of them. Patently unfunny man. Great humor comes from deep suffering and compassion -- if you leave out the compassion part, it's not funny. It's just mean.

It takes two to tango and when one of the dancers doesn't want to dance, there's nothing you can do about it. I waited on Jerry Lewis way back in the 70's in San Diego when I worked in a restaurant there. He was totally obnoxious. He wasn't made the center of attention, so he started acting up like hurling butter patties at the ceiling, dancing and calling out for a waiter or cocktail waitress in the middle of the busiest time for the restaurant. I have waited on or been on duty when other celebrities came in and all of them behaved very graciously. I feel so sorry for his children he treated them so horribly. I find it incredible in retrospect to how Dean Martina’s family adored him, and Jerry’s was the polar opposite. And as far as I know, Dean and his wife remained together. Which just proves Dean had values that he wouldn’t dispose of.
Dean Martin was also generous. In one story, a man and his wife wanted to see Dean at a nightclub, but he couldn't get in because he didn't have a tie, which was required. Dean heard about it and gave the man his tie, and the man and his wife were able to see Dean.
I never liked Jerry Lewis - I never thought he was funny, just goofy. Good for his son in standing up for his mother. Sad that Jerry Lewis was such a jerk!
His goofy, slapstick shtick was funny for about two years early into his career. The next 50 years was spent as an old circus clown begging for laughs.
So sad for his son, but he handled it like a man. Good for him, the son, not Jerry. Goes to show, someone can be a fine Entertainer and a rotten person. Probably more than we'd like to know.
How do you know he lost his soul? We know nothing of the family dynamics. People on all sides were likely selfish. It wasn't just Jerry, I would bet on it. It is very sad though & my heart breaks for all concerned.
Jerry Lewis was the same kind of father as Bing Crosby was to his “first” family. Neither one wanted anything to do with their children with their first wives. My heart goes out to them and may their mothers Rest In Peace.
Same thing will Peter Sellers who left his 3 children (both from his first and second marriage) nothing when he died (they received £800 each in 1980 currency). He left his money to his last wife (but was in the process of cutting her out of his will weeks before he died), they had no children together. She remarried twice after his death, had a daughter during her second marriage and died in 1994. Her daughter who was born years after Peter Sellers died, and has no connection to Peter Sellers, inherited his Estate from her mother. All his hurts and disappointments would surface when drinking. When he'd come home from the bar we'd see the headlights coming down the dirt road and we'd scramble to our bedrooms regardless if it was bed time or not to avoid him at all costs. His alcoholism and self hatred had a negative affect on all us kids well into adulthood and beyond. Hearing how Jerry's own kids would purposely avoid him after coming home reminded me so much of my own childhood.

He came to my town when I was 8 years old. Barely 8. My brother was seven. Jerry Lewis was doing the telethon and comedian stuff. We loved him so much. We watched every thing he did. It was the only happy thing in our lives. We went to see him. My brother sweetly asked him for his autograph. Jerry Lewis screamed and swore at my brother. Made him cry. Telling him to go away. It hit the local papers and further. My opinion of him is not a good one. The only exciting thing to ever happen for my brother. Who had just been burnt from catching on fire and still healing. Having to hold my brother and calm him down. He was terrified. Afraid of Lewis. Yes.....I feel sorry for his children. They may have needed a father. But, they sure didn't need him.
Makes me wonder how they got approval to be foster parents. People that abuse others (I am not talking about proper discipline--discipline is a necessary thing) just aren't worthy of having children.

We continued to exchanged pleasantries and then I asked if he wouldn't mind a photo with me, in which he obliged. Very nice man, I shall never forget that moment meeting such a legend on a given day.

So thankful for my daddy. He was an amazing dad and taught my brothers and I so much. I am very mich a daddys girl. I kust lost him in Feb. No amount of money or material things could ever replace him. I am lost without him. I wish all kids could have a daddy and childhood like mine.
He was FINALLY a good father to his children, but treated his first wife and children abysmally. He left Betty Martin for Jeannie who was very young and she descended into alcoholism, eventually losing her house and being incapable of looking after her kids. Ironically, it was only Jeannie taking them in a providing them with a home that kept things together. Betty finally died alone and heartbroken, of alcoholism. Jeannie was a very good young woman, in the end, and kept the family together remarkably, but Martin was unfaithful to her as he was to all four of his wives. I LOVE Martin and Lewis together, they brought joy to the world and still do, but neither were perfect. Indeed, Martin taught the much younger Lewis all about gambling and womanising in a way he never forgot!! I know full well that Lewis was incredibly difficult, but I feel he was terribly emotionally damaged from being left alone whilst his parents worked as vaudevillians and was very probably bi-polar. I feel sorrowful that his sons were so badly treated. I do distinctly feel, however, that Lewis estate was in financial trouble and this was why so much of it and the house was sold so quickly after his death. He was 91, after all, and maybe his sons should have learnt how to support themselves! Nonetheless, I feel that his son DID love him and was denied that final chance to make reparation. What sadness and what a tragic waste.
@Les Brown Yes, Les, and a typical Italian away from home - womanising relentlessly! Look, I LOVE Dean Martin - he was irresistible when on stage and screen , but he was not perfect and neither was Lewis. But it is Lewis who catches all the vitriol. Unfair in so many ways.
Dean Martin, had a love for people,,can understand him being a good father,,he oozed love and charisma .R.I.P Dean..,Jerry Lewis paid the price for Stardom, for sure,, nothing is perfect in the real world.
Such is at least in part why Dino split with Jerry after 10 yrs of putting up with Much... Though Jerry was a comic genius in his own right 'I suspect He was nasty to work with... As a young boy growing up in Los Angeles in the '50s I did relish all the Martin & Lewis Movies & other films Dean & Jerry did independent of one another
I was left out of my mother's will too. There was not millions of dollars but to be left out was hurtful. I have 3 sisters who convinced my mother that I was bad. They got everything. I don't care that one of my sisters took Mother's house and the other two took possession of all of her possessions. What bothers me is that they hate me for no reason and they convinced my mother that I didn't deserve her love. My only brother died 3 months after our mother did and my sisters didn't tell me. Greed is a horrible thing.
Just live a happy, prosperous and caring life. Never count on inheriting anything and make your own way. My folks had a great deal of money and left it to colleges and hospitals. Fine with me; I can take care of myself. Inherited money has ruined many a life and broken up families. We don't play that game.

My brother worked for a guy Jerry Cutler who owned a marine supply shop in Bayside, Queens NY in the mid 70s. My brother was about 15. His boss always talked about Jerry Lewis and said he was his childhood friend growing up. He only had nice things to say about him.
Never liked him. Never trusted him. Everything he did for charity was about his ego. Nothing else. He wanted adoration. A complete narcissist like Joan Crawford.
Joan and Jerry did a telethon on 1967. Both were a bit inebriated and very much a like. You can see Joan hurriedly grabbing Christina by the hand making her do what Mommie wanted her to do. No time for small talk get on the phone Christina.
He did adopt 2 kids (each in each marriage)and treated them as his own. And he wanted to adopt a girl with muscular dystrophy back in the 50s but the girl died before the process of adoption was over. So he did this with honesty.
Almost everyone I know despised Mr. J. Lewis for doing that to his children. My mom was a hardworking, successful, no nonsense woman born during The Great Depression and as long as I knew her she hated his movies. She would ask us to change the channel when he came on. And there were others like Mr. Lewis. Look at what happened to John Lennon’s son by his first wife. There ought to be a law. Children should not be victims here. Best revenge is for these kids to forget him and go on to live a productive and happy life of their own.
Kelly York Lennon and Lewis can not be compared as parents. Lennon literally abandoned his son, never took care of him nor raised him. Lewis' kids worked with him even as an adults, their entire lives, on telethons. Said he was 'strict but fair'. They only changed the tune when he left them no money in the will. But they had no problem to literally earn by his side their entire lives. Julian never had that contact with Lennon.
Fascinating post. My Mom also was about your Mom's age & never was a fan, tho she laughed at some of his shtick. Mothers just know about those things, talent or lack of & character
Sounds to me like Jerry tried to keep everything in the divorce that was acquired during his first marriage & leave his ex destitute which isn't cool either, that's why the kids sued him on her behalf. Sadly they never should've had to get involved but they did the right thing in helping their mother. Jerry would've been fine financially even had he split things with his ex as in most divorces especially those ending from long term marriages. The kids helped their mother sue him for what was truthfully right but that didn't mean they didn't love their father & Jerry didn't see it that way. Sad
He did not walk away from them as if they never happened. All 6 of them were grown up when divorce happened. And they worked with him until the end, Gary even performed at his dad's telethon in 2010
Not true at all- his kids said in their mom's memoir 'I laffed till I cried' he was strict but fair. Then changed their tune only when he died. And if he was that bad, why did they work with him ALL their lives? Who does that if their parent is that bad? I certainly do not-speaking from experience. And his kids never mention that they refused to pay their mom's nursing home, Jerry paid it until the day he died. The poor lady was almost evicted when he died- go fund me, saved her. How would you qualify the kids who do that to their mom? Maybe Jerry left them out of his will because of that. All those kids and grandkids- she was almost evicted. As for Jerry, he admitted his faults and being an egomaniac. But he was not as heartless as all of you want to paint him.

I live in Scotland. Our probate laws will not allow spouse and children to be ignored or left out in a Will. They get one third, between them, of all the 'moveable' estate - (money and goods, not property or real estate) It may be unfair in a few cases, but it saves some of the heartache and practical problems such as described here.
@@TheSpiritOfTheTimeshow about informing yourself instead of hating and judging? His kids refused to pay their mom's nursing home after Jerry died. He was paying it until he died. He gave the money to his son and he stole it and did not pay the home. They were on good terms with him and praised him for being strict but fair, yet they changed the tune when he died. So what does that say about them? Not to mention that one of his sons molested the youngest.
Yes, he gave to others and neglected his own family. I haven't heard many say that they loved or respected him. Jerry Lewis was about as bad as they come. I do think that he had some real psychological faults. Like, say narcissistic faults or other worse ones.

@@buzzbuzz132 sounds about right, when I was very young, my dad was a part of MDA, my dad asked Jerry to do his show locally, he said no, and if he were to do it, he required 20% of the take..this was way back in the late 50s
My mom was like this. I see so much of my mom in my sisters. It finally took me 62 years to finally figure that out about my 1 sister. I guess I knew it was there, just was blinded by it cause didn’t want to admit it. Just 2 weeks ago when she said something to me which struck a deep wound of how my mom treated me. I was out of my mind in shock that she said something like that to me. The ghost of my mom coming out of her mouth, mind. So sad to separate yourself from family especially a sibling. ✝️🙏
Jerry Lewis was so mean, he could not even control it in interviews. Everyone says yeah, but look what he did for the MD foundation. I know people who dealt with him during those telethons and they say he was mean to everyone around him and they think it was a big ego trip because let's face it he had nothing else going on. My parents witnessed him yelling at a kid for asking for his autograph. He really was one miserable person. No one disowns their kids. How miserable must one be.
No one disowns their own kids?? Not true. And many kids aren't deserving of a single dime. How about Charles Manson, was he deserving of an inheritance ? I think not!
Tim mcCaffrey yeah it was rumored back when he was doing movies with comedy he might have been dangling on the end of Dean Martin's extended member if you get what I mean
Being one miserable old bastard is a sin. I'm getting old and realize, especially in this day of hyper media, one must make a real conscious effort NOT to be like the Jerry Lewis' of the world.
tlg tlg I’m sorry, but I really can’t believe that. Although it’s easy to see where those stories came from when you watch how Jerry always behaved around Dean, Dean himself was not that way not that way inclined at all as he was always well-known to be much more of a ladies man.
Wow, so glad I had a wonderful father , he would have given us the clothes off his back , so glad I had the childhood I did , no amount of money can beat that , rip Dad I love you always ❤️
Same here, all the money in the world can't replace that. BTW, my dad's name really was Robin Hood Try and cash a check with that name, saw him do it once. He had to show his driver's license, in the 60's! May God bless.
Jerry Lewis like many "comics" was a creep! Most people who knew him say Lewis was the worst father in Hollywood history, right up there with Bing Crosby, who beat his sons mercilessly. StocktonRob
One of Bing Crosby's sons wrote a book talking against his dad, "Going My Own Way." But his other brother defended Bing Crosby and said he was a very good father and that his brother wrote the book, because he was just too lazy to get a job. Can't always believe what you hear.
@The Cawd Squad And he drove his wife Dixie to an early alcoholic death. Vile man. Great talent. Great actor, great singer. Under-rated even. I actually think Robert Mitchum picked up a lot of his acting technique from Crosby. But he was a vile person.
@The Cawd Squad Gary Took the Brunt of it, Later Appeared in a Lot of T.V. Shows, was a Contract Player with Universal Studios, was Best Known as Ed Wells On & Off Adam 12 During its Series Run.
After working with Jerry (and I've worked with many people over the years both famous and not-so-famous) I will tell you that Jerry went out of his way to be hurtful, mean, and treat the people around him in a truly despicable fashion - all to serve his narcissistic sick ego. People would be trapped in a subservient relationship with him, and he would torture and demean them in ways that were relentless and sadistic. I ended up pitying Jerry. People who have no kindness or compassion, and serve only themselves, end up exactly how Jerry found himself...dead on the inside.
Psychiatrists must have a name for someone who could turn his back on his first family. Turned into a sad, miserable old man. This after being a highly successful actor and comic during the Martin and Lewis years.
@lucy bond Yes, unfortunately, he was a real DOUCHEBAG to his first family! It's sad but true! He left all his money to his second wife and their daughter.
I once heard a story about a man who volunteered at one of the MD telethons. A few months after the telethon he saw Jerry Lewis on a street. The man politely approached Jerry and said, "I worked answering the phones on your last telethon." Lewis coldly replied, "What do you want? A medal?" This gives you some idea of what type of person Jerry Lewis was.
Wow and I always loved Jerry Lewis. His wife if 38yrs after raising 5 if their kids being left out if his will?? If his wife who got the 50 million had any sense she should have shared it with her and his 5 kids.
Well that’s the thing about this life- it ends one day and no one can ever escape that very real fact. What does that mean? It means that one day, every one will discover the truth for themselves and there is no escape from that truth. Whatever it is, I don’t know and neither do you. But isn’t it cool, the way we’ll all get to find out someday?
I think she's in Northeast Philadelphia. Somebody did a profile on her. She looks exactly like Jerry. I'm pretty sure I saw her once sitting next to a soda machine outside Walmart. I stopped in my tracks. Couldn't believe it. I think the rumor is she was the result of an affair he had with the wife of a Philly nightclub owner.
I'd rather grow up in poverty than in such a dysfunctional abusive home like this guy did. Jerry Lewis may have been famous, funny and good at raising money for charity, but his legacy is tarnished by the way he treated his own family.
His sons said in their mom's memoir years ago that he was strict but fair to them. Now they changed the story. So what's the truth when it comes to this subject?
@@Sunflower-cb1sk The bottom line is that Jerry Lewis did not leave any of his boys anything. That's the truth. So, whether Jerry Lewis was strict but fair when he was home with them was one thing, but in the end Jerry Lewis showed how much he really cared by giving them nothing. The boys must have sided with their mom, and Jerry Lewis resented it, so he paid them back by leaving them out of his will. He put his kids in the middle of his relationship with his wife and when he died he took out his anger on his kids by cutting them out of his estate. Jerry Lewis might have been talented and very funny but he did not have a loving heart towards his own children.
@@kimkerchner2032 not true at all, his sons Scott and Anthony sided with him post divorce, not their mom. Patti said herself she gave him permission for cheating, so what does that say about her? That being said, Jerry never spoke ill of Patti, always praised her for putting up with him for 36 years. He always claimed being egomaniac. He also gave her alimony 450000$ a year and paid her nursing home until he died.(he even declared bankrupcy in 80s because of it. His sons even refused paying that home when he died, so what does that say about them? Some people say Jerry hated Dean, while the truth is he adored him and always said so. Jerry was far from being a saint, but he was not the devil some people claim him to be. Dean Martin also was a cheating womanizer, yet nobody insults him for that. Not to mention that most shocking thing was to me the fact that one of his older sons sexually abused the youngest. That was not Jerry's fault, if it's true.
I remember Jerry Lewis. He was funny and intense as hell. I believe he has one of the strongest physiological system of any human ever. Lives to 91 with his life of self-abuse including a 4 pack a day smoking habit that he stopped at 56. Very impressive especially for his generation.

Jerry only came to a few of his sons birthday parties. And he never stayed very long! My prayers go out to the entire Lewis family!
He was on drugs and Jerry was tired of that situation. He tried to help him get off. But he refused. So..he washed his hands of him. His choice..
You need to ask why was he on drugs? Sometimes it's what people deal with as children
Thank you for posting this. For years I had heard that Gary had served in Vietnam and it was he who came back hooked on heroin. I was never sure that was true or not.

I find it incredible in retrospect to how Dean Martina’s family adored him, and Jerry’s was the polar opposite. And as far as I know, Dean and his wife remained together. Which just proves Dean had values that he wouldn’t dispose of.
I never heard one bad story about Dean. Either by his family or professionally by actors, directors etc
Dean Martin was also generous. In one story, a man and his wife wanted to see Dean at a nightclub, but he couldn't get in because he didn't have a tie, which was required. Dean heard about it and gave the man his tie, and the man and his wife were able to see Dean.

Same thing will Peter Sellers who left his 3 children (both from his first and second marriage) nothing when he died (they received £800 each in 1980 currency). He left his money to his last wife (but was in the process of cutting her out of his will weeks before he died), they had no children together. @Eagle1 You're right, of course. I didn't see what he truly was when I was a kid. And I, too, preferred Dean's talents!
@@curtissigler1963 I couldn't believe this ! What a F&*K !
@@curtissigler1963 Jerry Lee Lewis was a different person than the comedian Jerry Lewis. . He was a singer and musician.
I bet you believe Joan Was just like she was portrayed in Mommy Dearest...… come on now, bitter broke kids. SAD!
So thankful for my daddy. He was an amazing dad and taught my brothers and I so much. I am very mich a daddys girl. I kust lost him in Feb. No amount of money or material things could ever replace him. I am lost without him. I wish all kids could have a daddy and childhood like mine.
Dean Martin was a natural comic, and very charming, he was also a great father according to his children. JL and DM were total opposites.
It was rumored that they didn't like one another off camera....
@Bart Simpson Too common!!
Just live a happy, prosperous and caring life. Never count on inheriting anything and make your own way. My folks had a great deal of money and left it to colleges and hospitals. Fine with me; I can take care of myself. Inherited money has ruined many a life and broken up families. We don't play that game.
Yup. Been there. this stuff happens more than people realize.
Gail please forgive your sisters. This will allow you to go on with life and to be happy. Please know that Jesus Christ will never leave you nor forsake you. The Lord God loves you / infinitely! Read the Psalms and get close to the One who loves you for eternity!
“For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future”- Jeremiah 29:11 KJV
That is harsh. No matter how much he hated his ex, those kids were his responsibility.
You're not responsible for GROWN children.
I Agree
She was also his responsibility.
His covenant wife...he made vows to her and to God, yet chose not to honor those vows by becoming a serial adulterer.
He hated everyone he could not use for his own benefit , and disregarded everyone else...Lewis was a nasty , ingrate ..
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. There's way more to this story. We've heard one side.
Yep
like looking in a mirror huh
Had the misfortune of meeting Joan Crawford, i did get the last word in though, "I don't work for you" on the way out.
I had a Dad like that. It's sad to think about our childhoods, so I try not to.
~Life is Good~
There is a reason in the WATCHMEN, the comedian is the most vicious.
Sad
How is a grown man a victim because his daddy didn’t leave him a fortune? Get a grip
Yet the commie-pinko-narcissist (Imagine) is a hero to billions of sheeple. Can't stand him myself.
AND HE SPENT YEARS BEGGING THE PUBLIC TO DONATE MONEY WHILE HE HAD 50 MILLION, SOME NERVE !
It always amazes me how men can just walk away like his children never happened?
He did not walk away from them as if they never happened. All 6 of them were grown up when divorce happened. And they worked with him until the end, Gary even performed at his dad's telethon in 2010
It's because he was a narcissist. He was so arrogant and so self-involved that this kids didn't matter to him. That's not a real man.
My wife did she left our kids still hasn't talked to our son in over 3years my mother took care of us kids my father died when I was 7 my mom did everything for us sacerficed so much made sure we ate first we were poor but she was rich in heart
It's not just men that walk away. It amazes me how anyone can do that.
I met Jerry once and once was enough, not a nice man.

Yay Scotland. Nemo me impune lacessit. I'm an American with some Scottish ancestry.
You can always tell a man's true character by the way they treat their family. And judging by this, Jerry Lewis was an appalling human being.

Why wouldn't his 2nd wife share the inheritance with all of his children? She is just as heartless.
Jerry was one miserable old bastard, which is not a sin, but he made sure his family was miserable as well which is unforgivable.

tlg tlg I’m sorry, but I really can’t believe that. Although it’s easy to see where those stories came from when you watch how Jerry always behaved around Dean, Dean himself was not that way not that way inclined at all as he was always well-known to be much more of a ladies man.

He also gave her alimony 450000$ a year and paid her nursing home until he died.(he even declared bankrupcy in 80s because of it. His sons even refused paying that home when he died, so what does that say about them? Some people say Jerry hated Dean, while the truth is he adored him and always said so.
