    UPDATE: Thanks to everyone for the feedback. Quite some time ago I made major changes to my bettas environment. He has a much larger tank, a heater, a filter, places to hide and live plants. Fleetwood is doing very well :)
    Just a reminder to some people who I have seen comment on this video. Remember to be kind always. If you are preaching fair and proper treatment of an animal, coming on someone's video and using slurs and hateful words really detracts from the point you are trying to make. In addition, I do appreciate those who gave genuine, helpful advice.

    Hi, your betta is beautiful! Please be aware that bettas, like all pets, have a minimum set of basic care requirements. In order to thrive, bettas need a minimum of a 3.5 gallon tank with a heater and filter. This is the smallest volume of water that can effectively hold a nitrogen cycle, meaning that it can sustain a sufficiently large population of beneficial bacteria to convert ammonia released by his food and poop into nitrites, and then turn the nitrites into nitrates, which can then be removed with frequent partial water changes. I recommend considering these upgrades as many fish diseases result from improper water parameters that suppress their immune system making them more susceptible to illness and makes it harder for them to fight illnesses. Please consider researching about bettas & if you have any other questions I’d love to help! You will also need to get an API Water Test Kit to test the water weekly. The API Water Test Kit is a necessity when keeping fish. Cycling an aquarium is crucial to the health of your fish and should be done before getting your fish because it can take weeks to complete. I also don’t recommend using those feeding blocks when you go on vacation because that will cause major ammonia and nitrite spikes and will severely harm your fish. If you’re going to be gone, just have someone come feed him once a day or every other day, he will be fine. I feed my bettas 3-4 pellets, twice a day usually but that can vary from betta to betta. While you’re on vacation, you can have a friend or family member come over and feed him.
    I really like the New Life Spectrum betta pellets! They’re really healthy for bettas because they don’t have BHA or BHT which are preservatives in many betta and fish food that are known to cause tumors and cancer. ZooMed betta pellets have lots of meals in them and isn’t a very good, well rounded betta food. A bettas stomach is a little bigger than the size of their eye so 3-4 pellets is plenty for a little betta. Bettas at pet store are usually really young so I would feed him 2-3 pellets, twice a day. Just make sure you don’t over feed him. You will know if he ate too much because his stomach will be bloated. Their stomach should be slightly plump right after eating then back to normal by their next meal. And bettas always act like their hungry, if you put food in there he will eat it even if he just ate 10 pellets lol. Also, never leave food in their tanks for more than 15 minutes if they don’t eat it, it can cause ammonia spikes.
    I also really like the Seachem Prime water conditioner because you only need to use 3 drops per gallon so it lasts awhile.
    Petsmart has a 3.5 gallon aquarium for $19.99 and it’s good, basic starter kit. You still would need to buy a heater, gravel (I like Seachem Flourite), etc.
    Live plants are also ideal because they’re natural and help with taking out nitrates. Now that doesn’t mean you can skip water changes or tank cleanings if you have live plants, it’s just an extra benefit.
    And when you get a new tank, in the instructions it says to change the filter cartridges monthly... that is very bad and filter cartridges should rarely ever be changed. In the filter cartridge, there is a massive amount of beneficial bacteria that is housed there. Beneficial bacteria can grow on any surface, but the filter cartridge is where you want it to grow. If your filter cartridge gets dirty, swish it in some tank water (preferably from a water change) and make sure you test your water with the test kit so you know the nitrogen cycle didn’t “crash” from loosing too much beneficial bacteria.
    When cleaning your tank, don’t clean everything and change the water completely. You get rid of all the beneficial bacteria. I know many new fish keepers do full tank cleanings and completely take apart their tanks and clean it which is a big mistake. That can shock and stress the fish more than is necessary. It is a good idea to get an aquarium siphon to help clean your tank. It’s easy to use and makes water changes and tank cleanings so much easier. You can also gravel vacuum the gravel with it to get extra debris out of the gravel. A quick clean of the glass, a vacuuming of the gravel, and changing the water is a basic weekly tank cleaning. Every few months you might have to do a deep clean. I deep clean my tanks every 6 months and that’s when I do a big water change, really clean the gravel, clean the filter, etc. you just have to be careful not to shock the fish or “crash” the nitrogen cycle. Oh and don’t ever use soap when cleaning anything in your aquarium, it’s highly toxic and is hard to rinse it out fully. There are safer chemicals to use in the unlikely instance you would need to clean your aquarium to that extent.
    And next time your have to move your betta, please acclimate them, not acclimating fish can put them into shock. Please don’t put the first cup or bag water from the pet store into the fish’s new tank. You don’t know what is in that water or how bad the parameters are. The best thing you can do is gently pick him up with your hands and place him into his new tank. Most people aren’t comfortable using their hands so you can use a net, you just run the risk of damaging his fins and slime coat which will regenerate, it just makes them more susceptible to illness for a short period of time. But since you shouldn’t be moving him around much, using a net twice a year for major tank cleanings shouldn’t harm him.
    Going from a betta cup, just take a net and put it over a bowl then pour him into the net, lift him up and place him into his new tank. If you’re moving him from one tank to another, just scoop him up with the net and move him over.
    Fish are awesome, but they are by no means beginner, low-maintenance pets. Honestly, I would say a dog or cat is easier to care for than a single betta fish. Now I know you are allergic to them, I would just not recommend fish or classify any fish as cheap, beginner, or easy to care for. Especially because you shouldn’t get the fish the same day you setup your tank because you have to cycle it. With a cat, you get the cat, the litter box, litter, food, water, bowls, a brush, and a few toys and that will start you off with having a cat. Now you will eventually need more items for the cat, but you’re able to get the cat same day. I have spent more money on my bettas and fish’s basic care in the past 2 years than my cats’ basic care in the past 3 years tbh. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask, I’m more than willing to help!

      Hi! I was just wondering if it's ok if I keep my betta in a 2 gallon i just got a male betta 4 days ago and he looks way more better now.. he has a filter and plants and hideouts is that ok? Or do I have to upgrade ♡

    • @sophiawitman9931
      @sophiawitman9931 3 года назад +10

      Traci Sam A 2 gallon would work well for now! Ideally you would get a 3.5 gallon tank or larger, but as long as you’re keeping up with water changes (and not over feeding or leaving leftover food in the tank), your betta should do okay. I would personally do 2 water changes a week or more because less water volume means less room for error and a higher chance of ammonia spikes. Just make sure his tank is very clean and water parameters are stable! Eventually I would look into getting a bigger setup, but I know aquariums can be pricey so you have a little time to plan for it and save up!

    • @sophiawitman9931
      @sophiawitman9931 3 года назад +4

      Traci Sam If it’s getting dirty, I would do a large water change (50-75%) and clean the gravel (or sand) if you have a siphon. Take an old rag and rinse it with really warm water to remove any extra soap then clean the glass(inside and out). If you need to, rinse the hides and any fake plants to remove debris or algae(don’t use soap!). Test the water parameters every 2-3 days for a week or so to make sure you didn’t shock the nitrogen cycle. A deep clean like that should be done every month or two in a 2 gallon tank because small tanks get dirty, faster. Twice weekly water changes of 25-30%, cleaning the glass (inside and out), and a weekly gravel vacuuming should do! Also, I would highly recommend an aquarium siphon if you don’t already have one. You can use it to just change water or to vacuum the debris out of the gravel.

  • @0pul3nce49
    @0pul3nce49 3 года назад +26

    Please do your research, the minimum size tank is 3 gallons, although I recommend five, you should NEVER put a fish into a tank the day you get the tank, you have to cycle it. I recommend using bacteria in a bottle but food works too. I also always recommend live plants, it isn’t something that you HAVE TO get, but I really recommend it. With regards to food a recommend changing the food you feed your fish every once in a while, so the fish doesn’t get bored of it, although I think it’s only the case with some fish. the best foods are pellets and bloodworms, you must be very careful when feeding as it’s easy for your fish to get overweight. And those are just the basics but please do your research before buying any pet. You wouldn’t put a Chihuahua in a tiny cage because it fits inside of it, right? It’s the same for fish. I’m not hating I just think people really need to understand that a fish is also a live animal, you must treat it like one :) good luck! ;)

    when getting a betta make sure to do research. they need atleast 5 gallons w/ a filter and heater, the water needs to be cycled for about a week or 2 before putting the fish in. i recommended safe tetra, and a good water conditioner for cycling. they also need hiding places and plants ( atleast one alive plant also moss balls are great for fish) live plants and moss balls produce oxygen for the tank so they don’t have to go to the top as their only source of oxygen. bowls aren’t good for bettas especially bc they can easily get stressed out by constantly being surrounded by their reflection. (they are fighting fish so they’ll most likely mistaken for another betta)

    So cute:) Can I give a suggestion for food? Some food pellets can be big for betta to eat, I buy my betta's food called Northfin betta bites. You can get them online. The food does not make water dirty and it is easy for your fish to eat:)

    Make sure the water is warm and don’t put him near loud noises because he’s very sensitive to big noises and give him a lot of hiding places when it’s night time turn the lights off so he knows when he supposed to go to sleep 😊

    PLEASE READ THIS
    This is just so wrong.
    I hate to break it to you but normally a betta is happiest in a tank 10 gallon or more. Do never use large gravel as bettas are extremely curious fish who try to fit into tiny gaps. He will probably get stuck. Use sand or small pieces of gravel. You need to add live plants to reduce the nitrates and nitrites and ammonia. If you want to put in artificial plants in, never use plastic, use silk plants. The betta will be happy with a tank which looks more like it’s natural habitat though you can search google for pictures. Also add in lots of places and hiding spots for the betta to play with.
    If you consider using a mirror to play with your betta, never do it for more than 10 minutes a day as any more will cause stress in your betta.
    Please slowly let the water in when adding new fish so they can slowly get used to their new tanks water. (Only do this if you bought the fish from a fish shop where he was in a clean tank before) Let some water in every 5-10 minutes and after around 3 times of doing this, let him swim out of the cup by turning it sideways, making it possible for him to come out at his own will.
    Bettas need water at 74-79 degrees which means you need to move him to a proper tank and install a heater and it is also best to get a filter. Change 25% of your water every week and test your water parameters every 2 weeks. Ammonia, nitrate and nitrite should stay at 0 ppm whilst pH should be 6.8-7.5, you want your dH to be under 25. The API test master kit is recommended.
    Remember to cycle your new tank for a few weeks before adding the fish as this lets the beneficial bacteria grow. Don’t put the tank in front of a window. Also search for diseases, symptoms fir them and the treatment which occur in bettas including cloudy eye, pop eye, itch, fin/ tail rot, dropsy and a lot more!Also don’t feed your betta the same food it’s whole lifetime.
    If you decide your bettas main meals will be pellets, soak them in water first before putting them in the tank as the pellets expand and the betta will normally eat it too quickly which means the pellet will expand in its belly and will lead to constipation. Feed you betta 3-4 pellets twice a day. If your betta does get constipated, boil a pea for it. You need to peel the skin off of the pea and feed it half of the pea. If you don’t want to use the pea method, try giving your betta food high in fibre. You can also feed him flakes but remember to add some things like bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia. You can buy it live, frozen or freeze dried. Do not worry if your betta doesn’t eat in the first few days, he if probably quite stressed so give him time. Try feeding him everyday, if he doesn’t respond to the food in 5 minutes, remove it. Normally I wouldn’t feed my new betta the first day I got it. Do not be alarmed if your betta spits out it’s food. It just means that he needs to chew it again. Also your bettas head will sometimes move up and down when chewing. And if it holds the food in its mouth, it’s nothing to worry about. My betta always holds his food in his mouth for a bit before eating it. Also, petsmart don’t really care about the fish. They just sit it there.
    Also spend time with your betta and get to know it’s personality. The signs of a happy betta are bright colours, open held out fins (not taut) and responding to food quickly. You may want to consider adding tank mates if you know his personality. If he is quite a peaceful fish and doesn’t flare much, neon tetras, rasboras, mollies, guppies, catfish and many more can be good choices. If your betta is aggressive, it is best not to give it tank mates as although bettas get bored, normally they don’t get lonely. Remember, NEVER put a betta with another betta unless you have a large enough tank for a female community tank. Remember that most people who work at the fish shops don’t know a lot about betta needs.
    Also NEVER use soap whilst dealing with the tank as even only a small amount of those toxins in the soap can kill you fish. That’s the basics to keeping a betta but you still need to do your own research. Also if you have clue what your doing RESEARCH. I dedicated around an hour and a half a day of research so my betta could live as long as possible.
    Btw the betta you bought is beautiful! He looks like mine if mine was half moon lol mine is veil tail. Also my betta was 20.52 so your lucky

    That his living don't mean he is thriving. You need to clean the rocks or any decorations before you put the water to then put the betta in, you need to acclimate the betta before putting him in, then you need to put him in, when you give him food is only like 3 balls don't give him a lot, he also needs a heater, also you don't need to put a big amount of drops of the condition to the bowl because is little I would say that bowl only needs like 3 drops cause is not that big.

  • @chickenalfredo4032
    @chickenalfredo4032 3 года назад

    I know bettas can be a pain to take care of but please consider buying him a 5-10 gal tank atleast, he wont last very long in that tiny thing
    Also never just add your betta into a boul like that, make sure you alclanate him or he can die from the shock of sudden temp. Change.
    Betta also really need a filter and a heater, filter to keep clean and a heater to keep him alive and moving, bettas organs will slow down in cold waters and can become sick.
    Last thing
    Bettas need to eat something better then that, they beed bloodworm, brineshrimp,wingless fruitflies and other stuff (flake food not recommended)
    Also your fish is a male, you can tell from the longer fins and no egg spot (small white spot close to under its head)
    Edit:sorry for bad english I hope this helps

    Ok so I’m happy for you and all, but that tank is way to small. The minimum is 3.5 gallons, but you should probably 5 gallons. Also, where is the filter, heater, and all the plants and hideouts. Finally, those pellets are so big, and maybe add a little variety. Just tying to help :)

  • @mayaanicholas
    @mayaanicholas 3 года назад +1

    I’m sorry (actually I’m not sorry) but this is abuse. Bettas should be in a 5 gallon tank minimum. Not only do they need a decent size tank, but they need a heater, a filter, and a proper diet. For a heater I would just get a heater that goes up to 85 degrees. For the filter, a sponge filter is the best way to go since bettas are bothered by flow. As food goes they don’t have that difficult of a diet. I would get Fluval Bug Bites (protein) and just any old tropical fish food. I would also try and get a lid for the tank since bettas are known for jumping. I couldn’t find an update, but I really hope he is still alive and doing well. I really hope that you learn from your mistakes and changer your care. I heard you say that you don’t have much experience with bettas. Always try and do your research before getting a new pet. There are always ways to improve your care. And it is in fact a male betta. You can tell by the size of the fins and the coloration. I hope you improve. Thanks!!!
