    Performance Notes
This venerable country blues about a legendary Dallas neighborhood dates back to the 1930's and has been recorded many times by a diverse range of artists including Doc Watson, Jerry Lee Lewis and even a pre-electric Les Paul (under the pseudonym “Rhubarb Red”). It also turned up very early in Grateful Dead history - or pre-history, as there are recordings of Jerry Garcia performing it in his days as a budding folkie, in a duo with his first wife, Sara Ruppenthal - and was frequently included in the Dead’s acoustic sets in 1970 and the early 80's. This performance in Detroit was Dead & Company’s first live shot at the tune, and they nailed it, with Bob Weir, Oteil Burbridge and John Mayer each taking a turn at lead vocal. - Gary Lambert

Dead & Company was formed in 2015 when the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir joined forces with artist and musician John Mayer, Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Fare Thee Well and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. The result was one of the most successful touring bands of the decade. The inaugural tour kicked off in the fall of 2015 with two sold-out shows at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City and ended with two sold-out performances at the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in Inglewood, California.
Since then, the band has completed five tours, playing to more than 1.5 million fans, and has become a record-breaking stadium act. Dead & Company has headlined iconic stadiums across the country including Folsom Field, Autzen Stadium, Citi Field, Fenway Park and Dodger Stadium. Additionally, the band broke Wrigley Field’s all-time concert attendance record in 2017. Dead & Company’s 2018 Summer Tour ranked in the top 25 of the Top 100 Worldwide Tours and for the past two years, their Summer Tours ranked in the top 15 of the Top Global Concert Tours.

A fine rendition. I sang this in an acoustic 3 piece called "Slaves Like You." A great song that will stand the test of time.

Listen at 1.25 speed for about a minute then go back to normal. Shows how painfully slow they play some of these songs

@@owennandkylie2379I agree with you wholeheartedly. I see where some of these people are coming from. On the other hand, they aren't the grateful dead. They're an off shoot, free to make this their own.

Pretty sure the Grateful Dead (or Jerry for that matter) said they hoped future bands would play their music but never wanted anyone to feel they had to play it the same way. I’ve been to more than a handful of these shows and they are a VIBE.

@@Stanimal62 I am constantly amazed at how delusional deadheads are. Overall I’m a bigger fan of Jerry than John, but Johnny Salami’s technical abilities far surpass anything Jerry was able to achieve
