here's a perspective from someone who likes his eng voice: while i do enjoy the calmness of JP, CN, and (new) KR voices, i think ENG really fits his character because it reflects xiao who suffered years of endless pain and as someone who survived countless battles. I especially like his voices during battle when he gets hit or uses his burst. Of course people have their own preferences and i can respect that :)
i think for the english voice, the va just don't get the right directing.. i think? the chinese is undoubtedly the perfect one since it's the original, but the japanese definitely took some notes from the chinese. xiao is not an angry feral dude like most people interpret him. sure, he's agitated, cold, harsh, but he also carries air of you know.. a person who has live for thousands of years, it's not tired but the kind of feeling that he's seen everything. and he also has gentleness hidden inside of him
yeah exactly! xiao is a reticent, cold and quiet immortal who is also very wise as he is immortal, and he is also someone who has gone through a lot of pain and demons in him, and is very tired as seen through his jp and cn voices. and i agree, the cn voice gives him the perfect balance of cold, pain, wisdom and exhaustion, in the words he says and how he executes those lines. the eng voice has a gorgeous voice but the way they made him speak---they make him sound like an immature, feral, aggressive, kind of dumb, tsundere emo boy lol. Like the annoying main rival of a shoujo anime character lol. so unfitting.
I wonder why the EN director feels like they have to stick to an archetype with the voices. Razor’s EN voice is so “unique” that idk what to say. Zhongli’s is literally perfect, but I feel like the EN genshin voice director needs to do a lot better. In this case I feel like there’s no way it’s the actor’s fault. If you go on her RUclips channel you’ll find a vid of xiao speaking a lot more calmly, and tbh that sounds way much better

I KNOW it’s like watching a Chinese historical drama but then with twice the poems 😂 Chinese historical drama’s have made a little modern but will often contain many poems but Xiao’s every line is very elegant.

I agree. Korean VAs are bad for the most part, overly intense, formal and lack of emotion. English is next which is completely normal cuz it's an Asian otaku animated game.
It doesn't apply to all characters. For exemple, Paimon, I think her voice is perfect in English. Edit: I forgot to mention Albedo, his voice in English is the best. Recently I changed to cn and now eng Paimon sounds annoying, maybe I just got used to the soft voices in chinese
i mean with chinese it will ofc synchronizes with the movement because its the original version but with japanese, its the language that's the most similar to chinese, the hanzi and kanji are quite similar at times, so some words may synchronize with the mouth movement in the japanese version too.

Although the Japanese writing system is based on the Chinese system, the two languages are barely similar when spoken. They have completely different sounds AND syntax... you know, the English syntax can be considered pretty close to the Chinese one, never Japanese.... also, Japanese sentences are way longer than Chinese ones. It's actually pretty coincidental that this scene fits the movements well. Most of the time in the game, the characters speak longer in the Japanese dub - the mouths are already closed. This just happens to be a good example.. Chinese sentences can be super short, while Japanese is actually THE language or one of the languages that has the most syllables per sentence when conveying a certain amount of information, especially formal Japanese.

I have studied both of the languages. I am talking the very basic and common words and some inflections used. I am talking about how both languages use the CN writing system because around more than 50% of Japanese vocab is borrowed from Chinese words. Both also make a high use of function words. Also both languages make words using Chinese roots-> which is why CN/JPN people can tell what words are in the other language, which is relevant to what I’m arguing about, mouth shape. Now, this is why if you look at many of the words voiced in Japanese Vs Chinese in games, you can see huge similarities when Kanji is used, which is exactly my point. Just one very common example is 愛, same mouth shape, basically same word but with different tonal execution (and literally how many times do games use this particular word? A countless number of times.) Similarly 三 and 三 just have different execution. 乾杯 and 干杯 is another one that is very similar in mouth shape but has different tonal execution. 単身 and 单身 is another one. 運動 and 运动. 昆虫 and 昆虫. 時間 and 时间. 山 and 山. 的 and の, basically i can go on. There is a reason why when speaking, many JPN and CN people can recognize some of the words from the other language solely based on the mouth shape, pronunciation and similarity of the same word to their own language. This is also why, the JPN, and even KOR dubs to a limited extent will occasionally synchronize with the words that are designed for the CN version. In games and particularly my topic of mouth synchronization, it doesn’t matter how fundamentally different the languages, or how different the execution and pronunciation is, all that matters is the pronunciation and phonetics of common words. And the fact that such commonly used words are already so similar means that the mouths will obviously visually and audibly synchronize with these words. There are just so many common words that are similar in these languages. Also, I don't care about likes. Next time you disagree, you should do so without bringing likes into the conversation lol.
I'm so so glad people actually find out and trying out other languages in Genshin (especially Chinese since Liyue is basically Genshin China). It hurts me so much that most players think Xiao is just green sasuke, when he's a total opposite. Don't get me wrong the eng VA did a great job but whatever the hell happened in the voice directing just made it worse.

Pardon me, English is my second language and I could have worded my opinion better. I'm a Chinese who grown in a Chinese family and I adore my own culture. I play Genshin in Chinese all the time and I sincerely hoped more players play Genshin in its original language.

Really liked the japanese and chinese voices! The Japanese version makes Xiao melancholy and soft, while the Chinese actor emphasized the tragedy of Xiao Chinese voice makes it clear that the adept is terribly tired of life 😞
Chinese, original, no question it was great acting and great performance from the va Japanese, took many notes, a hint of their own interpretation, added a bit more of *annoyed at humans and their lack of direction to the mix, but it still coincides with his personality fairly well English, took the interpretation a little too far and made him sound harsh/ as if he couldn't be bothered, but the attempt is there and commendable Korean, I literally don't even know what they were doing here
btw, Xiao in chinese is speaking in a way that we call “文言文” or “成语/成語". 成語is a kind of vocab but mostly in four words while 文言文 is how Chinese ancestors used to talk in the past. More about 文言文, its more like a simplified version of a long sentence, but in a more elegant way
i love his chinese voice and has been playing it with chinese og voice for a while. i usually choose the jpn dub to match the anime-ish vibe in the game lol and some of my fav seiyuus take some parts in the game, but the cn voice is that good and shows his character the best!!!

I think part of it is because without that harsh edge to his voice it becomes a little more obvious that the VA is a woman. Maybe they were worried about him sounding too feminine or too young in the beginning. I think they found a good balance for the Lantern Rite though.
Yeah, even his words in the English version have traces of care in them as well. He spared Dusky Ming, told the traveler to leave because he is aware that mortals should not come in contact with adeptal power, and does not want to come into contact with others because he fears that his karma will affect them too.
when i first met xiao, i was plaiyng it on english, wich made REALLY dislike him for some time, since he sounded like just some annoiyng guy who would be just rude all the time, so i changed to japanese and now im a xiao simp
When I heard his voice lines on the trailer and actual game, JP dub became an instant favorite. How can he still sound so badass when it feels like he's almost about to cry? For example, when he voiced the line "Their voices...I can always hear them" on the 1.3 trailer, you can almost hear a slight crack in his voice at the end. So much emotion put on the single line. It's just amazing. Side note: I'm a bit shocked with the Korean dub. I feel like I could close my eyes and imagine a middle-aged woman instead of Xiao and it would have fit perfectly :(
Yep, the Korean voice actor itself have an unique voice, but it's still off for Xiao's voice. I believe that's Elsword voice actor, fitting for Elsword character but not Xiao
Japanese did a really good job at getting his tone right(of the Chinese). I feel the same character from them, even if the voices are different. English... Idk what happened there. Why is English VA's answer always "let's make em edgier, that will solve it!" It's like they do it cause they think it's an easy way out or something. And... I have no idea what the Korean did, he sounds like an old lady??
It's so crazy how less aggressive he sounds in Japanese and Chinese. I've never really had a problem with any of the english voice actors I just wanted to see what he sounded like
To be honest, I never really liked the English voice. If anything, it actually made me liked Xiao a lot less, and he's my favorite character. Kudos to the va for doing great for a character with a deeper range, but I always imagined Xiao to be more calm and less harsh than straight out annoyed with everything. Yeah he finds things meddlesome and becomes exasperated, but he is more detached than anything. He was supposed to have this graceful aura around him that expressed all the experiences he been through. In the English version, the tone and fluctuation is ear-grating to the point where I want him to shut up. I think the Chinese voice fit him best (love Kinsen, did an excellent job!) and second would have to be the Japanese voice.

They put so much pathos into it that hearing it 10, 20 , 50 times in that highly emotional tone grates way too badly to use the EN dub as a Zhongli main. Of all the lines to screw up, why did it have to be that.
I’m probably one of the only ones that hate English Zhongli. He sounds like an old man documentary narrator 💀 I’m Chinese and find Chinese and Japanese to be best 🤧 Korean is too high pitched in an awkward way and English just nah. Though to be fair if this was only in English I wouldn’t be too fussed but one you get to compare 🥴 but each to their own. Everyone has different preferences depending on what language you’re familiar with.
All of them sound great (The Korean one has been changed, still sound great) but I have a bias for Matsuoka's voice so I'm sticking to the Japanese version.
Western fans end up misunderstanding Xiao's character because of the English voice acting. The VA with better directing would definitely do good. They simply weren't directed in the right way regarding his character. An exhausted, annoyed but quite and calm immortal, that's what his character is. The Chinese one is the most fitting, well it is the original version, so it makes sense.
I initially switched to Chinese dub because I didn't want to forget my mother language now that I'm not in Taiwan anymore, but honestly I'm glad I did it before I met Xiao because his voice is much calmer, and while his English VA does her job quite well, I do think that the aggressive voice was kind of misleading, making it harder to see that he is in fact quite gentle and calm, not someone who uses harsh words to protect
I don't know if this is because I'm Japanese, but for me, JP Xiao doesn't sound like Kirito at all. I think it's the word choice, completely different than Kirito, but if I didn't understand Japanese I might think its Kirito as well.
As someone who has watched lots of anime that has characters with the same VA as JP Xiao(Matsuoka Yoshitsugu) his voice is much easier to recognize and literally every time I hear his voice I just think of Kirito. Although yes the way he speaks here is different from kirito.

Yeah, so I feel that Chinese fits his personality the most. English VA sounds too rough, Korean VA sounds, uh, kinda like an old lady While Japanese still retains his calm personality, he sounds a little cocky. It’s especially evident in his notorious “growling” voice line, where after he remembers something bad, he just goes “heh” Chinese wins! :D

It never grew on me because it never fits his lore. In the official genshin release about his character, he’s reticent, aloof, and polite. His English voice puts him at the trope of some edgy teenager with temperament issues. For someone who’s gone through 2 thousand years of knowing nothing but the battlefield and pain from his karmic debt, he would’ve grown wiser and have learned from the experience instead of remaining angry for so long. He’s probably more exhausted than anything else. I have nothing against the VA herself and think it’s amazing how she achieves such a low tone but the English voice just doesn’t fit him, it’s too aggressive.
It might be because it’s the original, or maybe the va just got the best instructions/casting, but I’m in love with all the Chinese voice actors, like it’s all just pretty perfect. Also, I know this is terrible, but I didn’t love zhonglis English voice, but I loved his Chinese one and thought it fit his character really well.

Ya I kinda like the edginess in the eng version. It gives him a personality that's more unique since there's already a lot of calm and melancholic characters in the game. A lot of people said that made them like him less but it made me like him more. Especially when you get to see his soft side in contrast.
One year ago but I found my people! Ican barely find any comments that appreciate English Xiao! YES, as someone who LOVES English dub in Genshin, I agree that people constantly shit on it for no good reason. They took a different direction for a lot of characters, and I'd say, for the better!
Laila Berzins is a great VA, and her calmer Xiao voice fits the character perfectly, but the sorta... aggressive edge it has in this scene just doesn’t quite sound right. The director’s definitely at fault here
Played mond and Liyue in cn so I never really noticed the difference. I just know that Liyue Characters fit CN so much. As expected because it is inspired from Chinese Culture. Whenever there's a Liyue quest with voice lines, I change always to CN. Other than that, I mostly use JP. Hearing the KR and ENG very makes me feel awkward playing the game myself even though I downloaded everything XD. Someday maybe I'll try playing in KR. Watching vids in EN is more than enough for me.

Man Japanese and Chinese sound so smooth, soft, low and nice tone. Korean was too but instead of low it's high, still it was smooth, soft and nice sounding (albeit like an elder woman as others have mentioned) but the English however does not. I have nothing against the English VA (I have my game set to it and I don't hate it) but I kinda wish they gave him a similar voice in terms of the above I mentioned. I suppose that could be said for everyone else who has different tones in their respective language tho this is the first time I've heard him or anyone else in other languages but that's just me.. I hope this doesn't come across as rude qmq

I agree. Korean VAs are bad for the most part, overly intense, formal and lack of emotion. English is next which is completely normal cuz it's an Asian otaku animated game.
It doesn't apply to all characters. For exemple, Paimon, I think her voice is perfect in English.
Edit: I forgot to mention Albedo, his voice in English is the best. Recently I changed to cn and now eng Paimon sounds annoying, maybe I just got used to the soft voices in chinese

i mean with chinese it will ofc synchronizes with the movement because its the original version but with japanese, its the language that's the most similar to chinese, the hanzi and kanji are quite similar at times, so some words may synchronize with the mouth movement in the japanese version too.
English also does it I think. Idk what happened with Korean

Although the Japanese writing system is based on the Chinese system, the two languages are barely similar when spoken. They have completely different sounds AND syntax... you know, the English syntax can be considered pretty close to the Chinese one, never Japanese.... also, Japanese sentences are way longer than Chinese ones. It's actually pretty coincidental that this scene fits the movements well. Most of the time in the game, the characters speak longer in the Japanese dub - the mouths are already closed. This just happens to be a good example.. Chinese sentences can be super short, while Japanese is actually THE language or one of the languages that has the most syllables per sentence when conveying a certain amount of information, especially formal Japanese.
@@akikisa lol of course i’m not talking about huge similarities, like grammatical structure or anything, because they couldn’t be more different, multisyllabic vs short, nor am I talking about the tonal vs non-tonal nature because that couldn’t be more different either. I have studied both of the languages. I am talking the very basic and common words and some inflections used. I am talking about how both languages use the CN writing system because around more than 50% of Japanese vocab is borrowed from Chinese words. Both also make a high use of function words. Also both languages make words using Chinese roots-> which is why CN/JPN people can tell what words are in the other language, which is relevant to what I’m arguing about, mouth shape. Now, this is why if you look at many of the words voiced in Japanese Vs Chinese in games, you can see huge similarities when Kanji is used, which is exactly my point. Just one very common example is 愛, same mouth shape, basically same word but with different tonal execution (and literally how many times do games use this particular word? A countless number of times.) Similarly 三 and 三 just have different execution. 乾杯 and 干杯 is another one that is very similar in mouth shape but has different tonal execution. 単身 and 单身 is another one. 運動 and 运动. 昆虫 and 昆虫. 時間 and 时间. 山 and 山. 的 and の, basically i can go on. There is a reason why when speaking, many JPN and CN people can recognize some of the words from the other language solely based on the mouth shape, pronunciation and similarity of the same word to their own language. This is also why, the JPN, and even KOR dubs to a limited extent will occasionally synchronize with the words that are designed for the CN version. In games and particularly my topic of mouth synchronization, it doesn’t matter how fundamentally different the languages, or how different the execution and pronunciation is, all that matters is the pronunciation and phonetics of common words. And the fact that such commonly used words are already so similar means that the mouths will obviously visually and audibly synchronize with these words. There are just so many common words that are similar in these languages. Also, I don't care about likes. Next time you disagree, you should do so without bringing likes into the conversation lol.
I'm so so glad people actually find out and trying out other languages in Genshin (especially Chinese since Liyue is basically Genshin China). It hurts me so much that most players think Xiao is just green sasuke, when he's a total opposite. Don't get me wrong the eng VA did a great job but whatever the hell happened in the voice directing just made it worse.
Other languages? Chinese? Are you forgetting that Chinese is the ORIGINAL language for Genshin and that all other are translated dubs? I sware this fandom just ignores the fact that this game is f-ing Chinese.
Pardon me, English is my second language and I could have worded my opinion better. I'm a Chinese who grown in a Chinese family and I adore my own culture. I play Genshin in Chinese all the time and I sincerely hoped more players play Genshin in its original language.

Chinese, original, no question it was great acting and great performance from the va
Japanese, took many notes, a hint of their own interpretation, added a bit more of *annoyed at humans and their lack of direction to the mix, but it still coincides with his personality fairly well
English, took the interpretation a little too far and made him sound harsh/ as if he couldn't be bothered, but the attempt is there and commendable

btw, Xiao in chinese is speaking in a way that we call “文言文” or “成语/成語". 成語is a kind of vocab but mostly in four words while 文言文 is how Chinese ancestors used to talk in the past. More about 文言文, its more like a simplified version of a long sentence, but in a more elegant way

i love his chinese voice and has been playing it with chinese og voice for a while. i usually choose the jpn dub to match the anime-ish vibe in the game lol and some of my fav seiyuus take some parts in the game, but the cn voice is that good and shows his character the best!!!

I think part of it is because without that harsh edge to his voice it becomes a little more obvious that the VA is a woman. Maybe they were worried about him sounding too feminine or too young in the beginning. I think they found a good balance for the Lantern Rite though.
Yeah, even his words in the English version have traces of care in them as well. He spared Dusky Ming, told the traveler to leave because he is aware that mortals should not come in contact with adeptal power, and does not want to come into contact with others because he fears that his karma will affect them too.

When I heard his voice lines on the trailer and actual game, JP dub became an instant favorite. How can he still sound so badass when it feels like he's almost about to cry? For example, when he voiced the line "Their voices...I can always hear them" on the 1.3 trailer, you can almost hear a slight crack in his voice at the end. So much emotion put on the single line. It's just amazing.
Side note: I'm a bit shocked with the Korean dub. I feel like I could close my eyes and imagine a middle-aged woman instead of Xiao and it would have fit perfectly :(

It's so crazy how less aggressive he sounds in Japanese and Chinese. I've never really had a problem with any of the english voice actors I just wanted to see what he sounded like
To be honest, I never really liked the English voice. If anything, it actually made me liked Xiao a lot less, and he's my favorite character. Kudos to the va for doing great for a character with a deeper range, but I always imagined Xiao to be more calm and less harsh than straight out annoyed with everything. Yeah he finds things meddlesome and becomes exasperated, but he is more detached than anything. He was supposed to have this graceful aura around him that expressed all the experiences he been through. In the English version, the tone and fluctuation is ear-grating to the point where I want him to shut up. I think the Chinese voice fit him best (love Kinsen, did an excellent job!) and second would have to be the Japanese voice.

@@therattrap1997 Agree, but with Zhongli they sort of screwed up one line. Just one line. THE ONE HE SAYS EVERY TIME, about sharing wine with friends. They put so much pathos into it that hearing it 10, 20 , 50 times in that highly emotional tone grates way too badly to use the EN dub as a Zhongli main.

I’m probably one of the only ones that hate English Zhongli. He sounds like an old man documentary narrator 💀 I’m Chinese and find Chinese and Japanese to be best 🤧 Korean is too high pitched in an awkward way and English just nah. Though to be fair if this was only in English I wouldn’t be too fussed but one you get to compare 🥴 but each to their own. Everyone has different preferences depending on what language you’re familiar with.
All of them sound great (The Korean one has been changed, still sound great) but I have a bias for Matsuoka's voice so I'm sticking to the Japanese version.

The Chinese va sounds soo calm and soothing, definitely my fav.
Western fans end up misunderstanding Xiao's character because of the English voice acting. The VA with better directing would definitely do good. They simply weren't directed in the right way regarding his character. An exhausted, annoyed but quite and calm immortal, that's what his character is. The Chinese one is the most fitting, well it is the original version, so it makes sense.

I initially switched to Chinese dub because I didn't want to forget my mother language now that I'm not in Taiwan anymore, but honestly I'm glad I did it before I met Xiao because his voice is much calmer, and while his English VA does her job quite well, I do think that the aggressive voice was kind of misleading, making it harder to see that he is in fact quite gentle and calm, not someone who uses harsh words to protect

It never grew on me because it never fits his lore. In the official genshin release about his character, he’s reticent, aloof, and polite. His English voice puts him at the trope of some edgy teenager with temperament issues. For someone who’s gone through 2 thousand years of knowing nothing but the battlefield and pain from his karmic debt, he would’ve grown wiser and have learned from the experience instead of remaining angry for so long. He’s probably more exhausted than anything else. I have nothing against the VA herself and think it’s amazing how she achieves such a low tone but the English voice just doesn’t fit him, it’s too aggressive.
It might be because it’s the original, or maybe the va just got the best instructions/casting, but I’m in love with all the Chinese voice actors, like it’s all just pretty perfect. Also, I know this is terrible, but I didn’t love zhonglis English voice, but I loved his Chinese one and thought it fit his character really well.

Ya I kinda like the edginess in the eng version. It gives him a personality that's more unique since there's already a lot of calm and melancholic characters in the game. A lot of people said that made them like him less but it made me like him more. Especially when you get to see his soft side in contrast.

Played mond and Liyue in cn so I never really noticed the difference. I just know that Liyue Characters fit CN so much. As expected because it is inspired from Chinese Culture. Whenever there's a Liyue quest with voice lines, I change always to CN. Other than that, I mostly use JP. Hearing the KR and ENG very makes me feel awkward playing the game myself even though I downloaded everything XD. Someday maybe I'll try playing in KR. Watching vids in EN is more than enough for me.

Man Japanese and Chinese sound so smooth, soft, low and nice tone. Korean was too but instead of low it's high, still it was smooth, soft and nice sounding (albeit like an elder woman as others have mentioned) but the English however does not. I have nothing against the English VA (I have my game set to it and I don't hate it) but I kinda wish they gave him a similar voice in terms of the above I mentioned. I suppose that could be said for everyone else who has different tones in their respective language tho this is the first time I've heard him or anyone else in other languages but that's just me.. I hope this doesn't come across as rude qmq
