Nice review! As a Beambox Pro home user, also a Technology teacher, I truly love laser cutting and engraving. Our school started with 3D Printing last year and I learnt a bit of laser cutting during remote teaching and lockdown. Now my school has a Beambox Pro and I own one at home so I can experiment with different techniques and materials. In terms of the laser cutting, I think power/speed control is very important, speed is not the only concern for a laser project: longevity of laser tube (I assume we all use glass CO2 tube) can be a trade-off if you decide to use high power most of the time. You are not gonna get 8K hours on 80%+ power. For me, I don't mind the slower speed and I usually run the laser around 25%-30% of the full power. You might want to run a one-off laser engraving and cutting test pattern each time you get a new material - they provide you different gradients of darkness and reference on the depth of cut for a given material. For school, Makeblock, glowforge, or Beambox/beamo can be suitable candidates but I must stress out that safety is the most important factor to use in the classroom. The camera feature comes second. Students don't have time and patience to align the object so a camera is a must have. I think the upgrade path after these kinds of devices would be RF laser tube from Epilog with some addon - they are not cheap but the laser tube and build durability should be a lot better. Happy laser cutting/engraving everyone!
You are a great inspiration! The honesty, idias, experiments, problem solving....etc just show how bright you are + TALENT! They couldn't get anyone do a better demo than you just did! Thank you for sharing with us!
Absolutely love your casual attitude toward random pieces of this machine that costs more than my car breaking off. "...then I noticed this piece of plastic on the lid aaaand the front fell off."
I only noticed this was 45 minutes when I scrolled down to comments at the end of the video, hahaha. Great work! Looks like a lot of fun! I would like to see more wood layered artwork and eva foam sounds great!
When you said, "Laser-air" and lasers came out with you saying "pew pew!" I cracked up. Really apreciate the extra creative and funny touches you put into your videos. Congrats on the laser cutter. I used to teach laser cutting (and other tools) at Techshop in SF when it first opened. They are great to have access to. Looking forward to seeing more of what you do with it. I haven't watched the rest of the video yet, but in case you don't mention it, one of the most important things to keep in mind is never to put vinyl or many other items that are toxic when burnt by the laser. Vinyl also will rust out and ruin the machine very quickly. Now back to the rest of the video.
Such a great in depth review! Seems kinda crazy that they sent you a machine someone else used since it could be hard to know if the issues you had came from the factory or not. Overall great video.
Here's a fun fact for you, since the engraved denim blew your mind: You might have already owned or seen some without realizing it. Many Jeans factories will use lasers to pre-distress jeans. Less mess, less fuss, less machinery than using traditional methods, and you can do anything from precise patterns, to simple wear marks, with different degrees of psuedo-wear.
@@Ruboka The plastics used for phone cases are generally not laser friendly ones. They would likely burn, yellow, or even release toxic fumes :\ Better to laser a phone case for those!
I keep coming and browsing my Subscriptions and forget that you're doing super cool work. I've been 3D Printing on and off these last few years and just wanted to say I'm happy to see you're doing some cool stuff especially when it's something you love. Hope all is well, Devin!
Hey there I used to watch your videos all the time in middle school (it's been a few years) your actually the one who inspired me to get into 3d printing it's a shame that your view count isn't what it used to be but I'm glad your continuing to put content out!
To this day I still have no idea why Chinese products use male-male usb so often... I get sometimes they want to have a shorter profile like for drive enclosures (though in this case the machine is huge and that’s no excuse), but even then, that’s what mini/micro-b and usb-c are for...
Power connectors and data/power connectors. They seem to be oblivious to standardization. Pretty soon alligator/croc clips will be the norm. See!! Can't even agree what to call a toothy reptile! :-)
@@einsteinx2 It's sometimes done when the main use of the port is to insert USB flash drives, but you want to use the same port in target mode for device setup.
I wonder what a firmware hacker could do with this machine. Honestly, the hardware seems to be spot on, with the exception of the alignment issue you so bravely tackled.
On a glowforge I've been using, the camera alignment is great in the middle, and a bit off in the corners. When doing any camera work (using scraps to cut new things, scanning drawings,) i've been just trying to keep it close to the center as much as possible. :) One thing I didn't think of before lasering (Pew pew!) was that the harmful fumes from some plastics aren't necessarily harmful to just us humans... they can also leave residues, ash, smoke, etc on the lenses, which decreases performance, but also could absorb some of the laser energy, damaging the lenses.
Those 'quirks' are simply unacceptable for a machine of this price. Especially that white lid that had it's plastic basically disintegrate, dropping screw after screw onto the work area. Even with the machine being second hand, that is just unacceptable. I was seriously considering recommending we purchase this specific laser cutter to my faculty, but after watching this I will have to reconsider and look for other options. I'm very, very glad I came across this video; thank you!
Great review!!!! Makeblock should give a brand new one! ...I'm a little confuse on the air filter. Does the exhaust goes to the air filter and the air filter unit has to be vented out a window too? ...can you try 3M 1080 or 2080 films to cut skins for a MacBook Air? ...and have you try the Muse laser cutter? Thanks. again great review.
For backlighting the mirrors, how about using a sheet of white paper as a difuser, or maybe two, with a bit of spacing between them compensate a bit for the proximity of the LED at the back?
Thanks for the overview mate. Just a heads up for you/everyone. I ordered this laser 3 weeks ago (post Lunar New Year), and still hasn't been shipped. I also read in a forum thread of a Makeblock rep advising they can't send/replace any laser tubes due to logistic reasons/complications (hence the reason you can't purchase the tube on their website). I'm sure it's a great product, but just wanted everyone to be aware of this.
I have been on the fence teetering on whether to purchase it or not. Being in Florida and my "workshop" being the garage it is almost always HOT so it sounds like it would not be very workable for me. Thank You for saving me over $3k!
The reason you got more accuracy with cloth is because the math of making a fisheye camera look flat makes a huge difference by the distance from the camera. I work with a Glowforge which may be a bit more extreme on the point, but without an accurate height setting what you see in alignment of image to material is useless but with it I get sub-millimeter errors at worst. As long as rotation is accurate I have even flipped an image and come back on the backside where a cut did not make it through. Also by making the design bilaterally symmetrical I can flip it in the hole in the material and engrave it on both sides.
I am surprised there is not a separate layer for vector engrave. Software I've used in the past had Blue for vector engrave and Red for vector cut in combination with the BW raster. I could even run the machine "open and disabled" such that it would emit a low intensity laser pointer type red dot and you could run the just the cut or engrave lines to see if the output lines up to expectations.
I get better shadowing results from my $200 desktop laser. I'm impressed at some of the cutting but the fact that they shipped you a machine that could not do everything it promised is disappointing for $3,500. I'm actually in the market right now to buy a cutting laser or an SLS printer but I've seen the prices go up higher in the quality drop. I'm at a loss to which way to go. This definitely was disheartening for this product for me. I have created some amazing artwork and personal wood carvings with an neje laser. I would however be interested to see how it fuses corundum! My laser isn't quite strong enough to create a bead like I can with a torch. It might be a cool experiment because no one has tried it yet.
Can you share which machine did you get please? I'm going crazy about trying to find one that really works and not even the pricey ones seems to be reliable. I just want engrave on birchwood.
Great comprehensive test of this laser with different materials. Does this laser require the use of their cloud to work? I know the Glowforge does, and I won't consider anything that relies on something outside of my control. If a company goes under, you don't want a $5000 doorstop.
I recently purchased this machine with the smoke filter machine and boy does it smell!! I was very disappointed with the smoke purifier. How do you vent for this machine?

Hmm, this looks like a fantastic machine, however, was looking for a machine to cut through paper accurately to start. Would anyone recommend techlifer or Moracle laser cutters for that kind of job? Does anyone have experience with those? Found them on Amazon and they seem decent for that kind of a job.
Where did you get that shirt from?
