  • Almost four years since 72 people died in the Grenfell Tower fire, a decision looms about what should be done with the structure itself - in a way that honours those who lost their lives.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
Some of the survivors and bereaved from the Grenfell Next of Kin group are clear about their vision; transforming the tower into a living vertical garden, that stands as a national monument to the tragedy.
But they're worried the government has already made up its mind to pull the building down. Fatima Manji has been to meet Marcio Gomes who came up with the idea.

If structurally possible and with a low maintenance cost, this would be great.

Great idea. The garden might be modest, but keeping the tower as a memorial in a new form is creative.

Considering the plastic cladding essentially killed the victims, covering the ruins with flowers as a permanent memorial makes sense. Hoping that's the way they do it.

It’s very telling how more than four years on nothing has been done to memorialise all those people lost . It needs to be kept as a reminder of what happens when council cut corners to save money . It cost lives

The survivors should be able to choose the memorial they think best. I am sure if the Tories don't pay, public subscription will. On a personal note, I think it's a great idea; imposing & beautiful

They can so can the victims family they all have to agree fully on it by 2022 or it’s getting pulled down and then they will have decided what happens with the site

  • @obg6446

It needs to be removed, regardless of what people want. The structure is damaged and adding more weight will do it no good

For one thing, to pull the building down due to "safety concerns" is so incredibly insensitive to the victims and survivors who raised safety concerns for years prior to that tragedy. If viable, the survivors should decide and if this is what they all agree to, the council must do it ASAP. No more pandering to the rich. Grenfell survivors have not been looked after before or since the inferno, anyone can see how preventable it was and Kensington Chelsea didn't care about these tenants. This is the very least that should be done to perhaps help to ease their trauma. I think it's a brilliant idea

These feel good stories are insulting as they stir-up false hope. The residents were given a settlement to avoid future lawsuits. Those in power are not interested in what they would like. At some point the land will be reclaimed for market-rate housing with some sort of plaque and event commemorating the deaths on the site. How many people have gone to jail for the poor management of the facility and the sub-standard cladding - NONE? Despite the overwhelming evidence, the former owners can't get justice.

I still can't believe they only had two pathetic fire hoses trying to put out a towering inferno. There needed to be at least 8 hoses on each side of the burning tower. How the Fire Service got away without any punnishment for their incompetence just shows how corrupt the system is - they will always defend themselves first even when they fail so miserably. They had so much time and resources to put it out yet they just deployed two pathetic hoses - TWO!!!!

Please have some respect for the survivors of this tragedy, this video is here to highlight and remind people of the detrimental failings of a council that in turn killed 72 innocent people. The survivors continue to fight for justice for the loved ones they’ve lost so its very insensitive for you to spam the comments in order to condemn a woman’s interviewing techniques from 2018. Please be more mindful and put a complaint in to channel 4 or ofcom if your that bothered.

I am probably the only one in the USA that even remembers that tragedy and will not forget it. I wish it would generally in our sense be torn down and then above and below ground memorial similar to what we did at the world trade center be built as a memorial
