They're meaning fresh as in keeping it soft and preserving the oxygen from breaking down the flavor. If you leave a gum out of the wrapper over time, it will harden, make it hard to chew especially people with sensitive teeth and it will break into pieces. They're keeping it from going STALE, not rotten. Same goes with potato chips and other snacks.

@@charliebaker3230 Especially if it gets exposed to oxygen over time breaking down the rubber molecules and it turns brown in result of the oxidation process. You know if a rubber band is left outside in the elements over time, it starts to get brittle and loses its elasticity and breaks.
They're meaning fresh as in keeping it soft and preserving the oxygen from breaking down the flavor. If you leave a gum out of the wrapper over time, it will harden, make it hard to chew especially people with sensitive teeth and it will break into pieces. They're keeping it from going STALE, not rotten. Same goes with potato chips and other snacks.
