Thanks for doing a review on it! This dashcam uses the 2K Sony IMX675 sensor, not an actual 4K sensor like the A139 Pro with an IMX678. (All of Rove’s R2-4K models are fake 4K dashcams.) I also find that in addition to up upscaling and interpolating 2K footage to 4K, it also captures at just 25 fps. If you put its “30 fps” footage in a 30 fps timeline, you’ll see duplicate a frame every 5 frames or so as it tries to stretch a 25 fps video into a 30 fps container. Interestingly its video quality also looks worse than other dashcams that share the same sensor, for example the Viofo A229 Plus, so their processing has something to do with the reduced video quality you saw too. It’s more than just fake 4K footage captured at a reduced frame rate.
@@LifeHackster For real. Yeah their R2-4K and R2-4K Pro also use 2K sensors as well, the Sony Starvis IMX335. It's a very popular sensor and unfortunately there's lots of manufacturers who stick lower res sensors into their dashcams and then sell them to customers as 4K options nowadays.
yes it is very disappointing the resolution looks really bad and blocky... I would say this video looks more like 720p, sadly. I bought one and looking at the videos, it's very sad...
@@zahinrabbi2743 If you can't even read the license plate number of the car in front of you, what's even the point of having a dash camera? I'm watching this clip in 4k resolution and I can't even make out the license plate numbers in this video. I don't know if Viofo is any better, but if this "STARVIS 2" sensor is the best on the market, it's still not good enough to record license plates. Sad.
Trying to decide on a dashcam and this seems like a good all in 1 package. Front, rear, and card for a decent price. Others I'm considering are Viofo VS1 and the Viofo a119 mini 2. All of these cameras have the IMX675 sensor. The Viofo seem to have better picture quality but for the same price you are getting a decent sized card and rear camera. Might be a good option to get a full ready to go setup in the car.
I guess for the starvis 2 sensor, rear cam and 128gb memory card all for $129 on sale and $145 not on sale, I can put up with a little lower quality compared to the more expensive ones.
I got two of these last july 2024 on prime days during the discount. Just installed one with the hardwire install kit(not fun).(is letting the battery drain to 12.4 volts a good idea? I turn mine off when not driving. I didn't do a firmware update. I'm seeing a lot of artifacts at night. I have the hdr on with the brightness at negative three at 1440p front 30 and 1080p rear(what happened to 60fps front at 1440?). I also have the cpL filter. I know rove doesn't have the viofo quality but it has a suction cup(front cam only, humph!) and I'm familiar with it. Its a cheaper set up than the viofo dual channel and it works. I still need to put it through the paces, but for the price I thought it was ok. The power cable and rear camera cable can be easily mis-plugged on the main unit. One more thing, if you use a third party hard wire kit(most provide the 5v 2a same as rove. Do get a usb c power connection), the security mode won't detect the hard wire kit for some reason, and security mode fails to engage. I had purchased the viofo hk4 hardwire kit because it was a little cheaper.
My VIOFO mini 2 looks great and has the right time on video stamp (GMT -5) but doesn’t factor in time zone when creating a file on memory card (GMT -0). Support said that’s how it is, so I’m thinking about trying out Rove. Have you experienced that with VIOFO? Thanks.
I am shopping for a dashcam/ rear camera. So just wondering if there is a solution for tinted rear windows? Do they make a combo of starvis2 dash and outside mounted rear camera to bypass dark tint? Thanks
Hi. I have this camera and the only issue I have experienced is when I connect to Rove's wi-fi it overrides my phone's connection to my stereo so I can't use Google Maps. Any suggestions on what settings I need to change?
It can depending on the distance which you will need it especially when someone hits you and drives off… so they have to be close to you either before they hit you or after.
I'd say the only thing that matters is the video quality. I think dash cams have a very long way to go still. My phones camera blows these out of the water, and considering you're only getting a camera it's pretty lame. Dash Cams feel like using RUclips in 2008 when all you had was 480p
your phones camera? come on man your phone is $1200 with an extreme processor and these dash cams are $140 operating on micro sd cards. Have some sense, please.
Not impressed with Rove products. I have one unit but after 2 years its starting to fall apart. Most of the time it keeps saying "not recording". Even if I reset it it doesn't turn on consistently. If I manually turn on the recording it will start recording then after a minute it stops again. If the SD card is full it's supposed to loop over previous recordings so I don't know why it doesn't want to start recording.
What kind of sd card are you using? I had a Cobra dashcam with gps years ago and it started glitching in a similar way. I ultimately learned that the Samsung sd card I was using would fail in dashcams when it failed in a replacement cam.
@@joethetrucker6834 I'm using the Rove SD card that came with the camera. I erased all the files on there and cleaned it up but it still stops recording. I'll have to try a different card.

Thanks for the info. Wow, so this is basically a 2K dash camera and not 4K. Rove needs to do better. Funny thing, they are pretty popular.

Thanks for watching!
Extremelly helpful, thank you! Short video that provided everything I was looking for.
Thanks for this review. I'm just starting my research for a dash cam.
What is the dongar adapter you use? Thats pretty cool
What is donglar adapter you are using? Quick mount! Appears around 3:30 in video.........
Was the windshield possibly dirty for the rove view area?
Looks like Viofo for the win!
True..
Viofo a139 pro $319 and rove dual $125.

I really haven’t noticed it.

Most have the same sensor so really purchase based on warranty, and price
You obviously didnt watch the entire video, he stated and showed the Viofo has a much sharper image,
@@myusernames1967 fair but I'd assume that's from a software issue, but I suppose it could also be bad implementation of the sensor

I have a light tint in our cars and no issues.
I have A229 pro with dark tint, no problems at all.
Hi, I like your videos.!
what dash camera did you recommend for really hot weather, I'm in Las Vegas, NV.
I use VIOFO and a good high endurance SD card.
Hard to beat Viofo for price and quality of image.
I see that this camera can be adjusted up or down. But can it be adjusted left or right?
I have a wyze V3 in my car it works great and it's always recording.
That’s genius !
How does the Viofo A119 mini v2 compare? Like in video quality etc.
A119 Mini 2 is better.
I want a dash cam, but I have no idea how to install.

Turn off WiFi and just enable Bluetooth. I would know LOL
I was considering selling my Rove R3 (with the cabin camera) but the video quality is definitely better on the R3 than the new Rover dual dash. Yikes!
What is parking mode 😅 because that's what I am looking to record when it is park, now is that parking mode or something else
Does this have an app to go with?
So which one you prefer?
license plate can't really be read while moving, just need the right conditions while stopped.
