    I love that Peterson has the same passage in his first 12 rules for life. Which is funny, because it means he didn't check his resources, and he quote it like this normally

    I think there is a simpler explanation. Ockham's Razor applies:
    Hitler had two goals. One was winning the war and the other was exterminating all unwanted people. Both goals were considered to be of about the same importance. The nazis were obsessed with purity and disgusted by deviations from their norm. Once Hitler believed he could not win the war, he knew he had limited time to reach his other goal of purity through extermination, so he increased the efforts.
