Watched the entire video. Man, it’s like therapeutic watching you work so effortlessly on the e46. You make me more confident in doing some of these repairs myself…..like the belts and pulleys I emailed you about haha :)
Thanks Cohn! always love seeing you in the comment section. Happy new year to you brotha! Watch out for the Gain Goblins ;)

Dude I’m loving the channel. Big E46 fan here. I’ve got a 330ci 6 speed manual. Love working on it. Just sold my 330ci auto. Big love from the uk❤️👍
Thanks for the love! Awesome to have viewers in the UK. Appreciate the support
Thank God you are making these videos. I am retired and they give me something to do other than watching reruns of the Andy Griffith show! Well done!
Thanks Rick! Glad I could mix up the entertainment for ya. More comin very soon
Absolutely loving every single one of your videos. Honestly the craftsmanship your showing and all your efforts is mega
Hope your well!
that means a lot, thank you!!!
I have a 09 328i with 44k miles. It was abandoned due to repairs wasn’t being done and hasn’t moved since 2017 from previous owner. Compared to what you’ve done with that E46 I’m going to have some stressful fun to get my car running again
Its probably got the N51 engine, its one of my favorites! Those E90s are pretty solid cars, you might get lucky! Id love to tear into an E90 thats sat for that long. would make an epic video lol
love your style vids, just watched the whole build just this morning man keep it up 💪🏽
That’s so cool to hear! Thanks for watching Martin! You’re a real one
Watching from Scotland 🏴 enjoying the content 👍🏻 Have a great new year!
love hearing where my content is being watched! happy new year to you too Colin!
Great video, have fun driving it around, you totally deserve it! Also good that you admit mistakes made - it happens to all of us, but not everybody talks that easy about it.
Thanks Edgar, I’m pumped to get some new tires on it, might work on that today. Appreciate the comment
Equally fun, interesting, informative, & inspiring. Been wanting something with an M54 or an N52 for a while now. Every day I see cheap E46's & want to do exactly this so bad!
Also, when I heard the "O'Reilly Auto Farts", I knew I was in the right place.
Keep it up man!!
Thanks Roth!

Just did the oil filter housing gasket on my e36 yesterday, thing was just like yours, hard as a rock, yours was definitely worse than mine, im surprised yours wasnt leaking! Mine was definitely leaking like crazy, whole driver side kept becoming drenched in oil. I've owned (,and therefore worked on,) E36 and E46 since 2004. Shit if I didn't learn me something from this video. #1, use lots of lube. Those hoses are a bitch and now they will be less of one. #2 That bit about the alternator nut is freaking gold. I have spent many a minute (or hour) struggling with reseating the alternator after removal... Now I know. Thanks man!
Glad you enjoyed it partner! I’ll do the best I can at trying to identify the tips and tricks on the E46 platform I’ve learned over the years
Yeeeee good shit dude

Awesome video and a very cool E46 330i. The 330i sedans are quite difficult to find in Europe especially one that is in great condition but we get a lot of the 320i/325i models. You should also look into replacing the expansion tank itself at some point to be on the safe side. Keep up the good work 👍
Couldn't agree more! The expansion tank definitely needs replacing at some point, water pipes too. Awesome to have viewers in Europe. Thanks for stopping by!
In europe this car is closer to 5k than 500$ :D You can't even get the M Tech (ZHP) bumpers for 500 and the engine is much more expensive

Phantom youre the realest! Thank you for the most thoughtful comment ive received so far! It means a lot and is very helpful to have the feedback. I remember the names i see regularly, you being one of em. Cheers and Happy New YEAR! thanks for being an awesome viewer and supporter.
Also! I didnt get fired for it, boss was really cool with it, as long as I learned. We could tell thats what happened because there was rust on the inside rib of the crank pulley meaning it was exposed and didnt have belt on it, thus proving it was off a rib. Worked there for several successful years afterwards!
@@DayOffDIY thanks for that backstory. Glad it worked out and you kept your job. 👍
I wish I'd known that trick with the nut on the alternator when I had to replace the regulator in the one on my E60. I distinctly remember that *not* being fun to put back in 🤣

Great job brotha! Glad that RUclips recommended this video to me and I have subscribed. The only thing I recommend is never try mating Chinese parts to a German vehicle. You make it look so easy. I would be going through my progression of swear words.
Hahah very rarely do i throw a wrench, although sometimes I feel like it lol. I think eventually i figured out if i get pissed off or angry, it just makes the job more difficult and longer haha. Sometimes i just have to calm down and say "please" and the bolt or piece just falls off afterwards
I never thought that I would live to see the day when Craftsman sockets were made in Taiwan.
yeah its a real shame. craftsman used to be the BOMB! now its chinese garbage
Excellent work. I will be moving to the US next year and I was thinking about placing my name in line in case you decide to flip a good E46 or e91 wagon. Preferably manual. Danke schön!

Just a heads up this is a ZSP (sport package car with MTech 1 bumpers and style 68 wheels). ZHP came out in 2003 and had MTech 2 bumpers with style 135 wheels. ZSPs are still nice

This is my favorite car nothing better than e46, I have a w205, I think the car I have now will age as fine as the e46...
Always wanted to own a Mercedes! They know how to make a gasket :)
Hello,
I heard that BMW will stop manual transmission on newer 3 series. I would love to hear your opinion on such decision.
You did great work on restoring this awesome E46! 👍🥳
Thanks Mehdi! Thats a shame, first ive heard of it, although i dont stay up with the times very well. That would be a real bummer. Driving a manual trans makes me feel more connected to the car. It makes sense though with the complexity of the new automatic or semi-auto transmissions, theyve come a long way but they can be so expensive and problematic. There is a beauty to the simplicity of a manual compared to auto.
“Look at that spider!”
*reaches for it*
Lol
Lolol
I have an E46 Touring with the M47N engine that is supposed to reach 88C or preferably more, but it never gets past 80C. There are 2 thermostats in this car. One for the engine and another for the EGR. I do not want to guess and throw parts at it. DO you think replacing both thermostats fix this problem, or could it be more probably that there is some deeper problem???
hard to say.. not familiar with that engine, we dont have it here, you could check with a temperature gun around the thermostat areas to see if theres a temp difference, theres also different temp thermostats you can install
Could you do a cost breakdown and what you should spend more money on when doing repairs and such?
No doubt! ill try to include more of pricing for parts and what not in the future :)
M50/52/54 pumps come out easily but four cylinder M40/42/43/44 pumps can be a real bastard,
Rarely seen the 4 cylinders... Ill keep my eye out! thanks for the comment
Great vídeo again! I’d love to see a chain tensioner maintenance video, the one with the spring. Do you have any video showing it ? Cheers from Spain
Thank you! I’ve done the job before, I’m my mechanic says, however I do not have a video. Do you have any questions on that piece?
Awesome to have a viewer from Spain, thanks for stopping by! 🇪🇸
@@DayOffDIY I have a M52tu with 235k miles. So I guess is time to do some maintenance on the chain. But I’m not sure if I should do a full rebuild with internal tensioners or I can get away with the external tensioner.
The furthest I went with my engine is replacing vanos seals and bearings
@@bigcln87 is the chain making any noise? IMO I never really did timing chain preventative maintanence on M52 or M54. We would renew if we were doing head gaskets maybe or had the heads off, but in my opinion they don’t fail or wear out like the M62s do
@@DayOffDIY if I get close to the vanos area during idle I can hear a subtle rattle but I guess this is normal.
I’m more concerned about the plastic chain tensioner and guide rail inside the engine than the chain as they’re 23 yo plastic parts😂 I also heard that the tensioner spring tend to lose tension hence making the chain lose with horrible effects haha
@@bigcln87 if there’s noise it might be worth looking into! The exterior spring tensioner is pretty easy to replace so that might be a good place to start! Easy enough to see if it improves the noise, but you are correct, the plastics don’t age well…
Love the video! I have a question tho, what’s that tool called you used to check for leaking on the coolant? Thank you!
That’s a cooling system pressure tester, used with a bmw adapter for that model of car. Hope that helps!
@@DayOffDIY Great thank you and congrats on the successful project can't wait to fix up a used 2002 330ci convertible in the next month your videos help a lot!

The UK-made DISA kits are really good. The cost could be a problem. Not sure if it will be worth it.
ill have to give that a try, wasnt happy with these kits. one of em didnt work
Hey love your videos, I performed on my m54b30 all the repairs you did here and many more but still have a problem. When I start from standstill with only the clutch and minimal gas pedal, the rpm drops under 500 for a while before coming right up. Did you ever encountered something like this? Thanks and keep it up bro!
O2 sensors, mass air sensor, vacuum leaks, camshaft
Thanks for the comment! The viewer down below had some good suggestions, any codes currently present in the computer? i would suspect a potential vacuum leak maybe.
Mine has camshaft position sensor issue. I ve got new sensor but it didnt solve the problem
interesting... what code are you showing?
Fcp euro sells a metal disa kit that I’ve heard amazing things about
Im going to have to look into that, thanks for the tip
The plastic box he pulled with the flap. Did he say desa? I can't find that thing anywhere. I have a vacuum leak I believe that's my issue.
That’s correct, it’s a DISA Valve. Sometimes can leak at the gasket or the mechanism can fail causing noise and rough running
I find it funny, my civic blew a head gasket similar to theirs.
From the belt hanging off a rib? crazy, yeah it can happen to anyone!
So what makes you think it's a ZHP? Just curious if you know the differences or just saying it is?
I misspoke, I believe it is a ZSP sport package, I wasn’t educated on the differences but speaking to viewers I know the differences now 👍🏻
Nice video bro, you mentioned you were a bmw mechanic in the past, what do you do now for a living?
I worked as a firefighter for the last 4 years but am trying to do RUclips full time!

@@DayOffDIY You've got a great tone and you share your thought process. That's 100% ligit! I'm excited for you and many people dig it!! There are sooo many e46 fans every where and they all have 100k mi. cars and want help. I'm only at 89k. I think my car is really doing well. I just need a little bit of resto/refresh on some things. Do you think I could drive it 3 mi. to a lift. or if my buddy can jack it up with me to check the parts you suggested and the trans fluid either safer than the other?
e
Thanks for the comment Bogusie! sorry for the late reply. I mean if its not shimmying too bad while driving it or making horrific noise you could take the gamble, or just get a tow to play it safe.
I would focus on the Guibo or the Flex disc that connects the driveshaft to the tail of the trans, also the center support bearing which holds the driveshaft up and supports it in the center, as well as the differential bushing that mounts the rear differential to the rear sub frame. Theyre notorious for failing and make a horrific clunk shifting from P to D to R or any real order. when you shift the movement from forward to reverse its the worst. Then i would check trans fluid. Good luck! and thanks for being a great supporter
My daughter’s 2004 bmw 330i broke down on the highway. When I went to get her the car was overhead. It was one of the hard plastic coolant lines that you said you will replace later…
So I took the car home and replaced the whole cooling system and when I cranked it up to bleed the system I realized that the head gasket was gone. It was blowing compression out through the overflow tank.😢
So I was going to let her borrow my weekend 2005 bmw 330ci but I first wanted to make sure those coolant lines were okay. So when I removed the intake manifold I realized that they were already beginning to deteriorate and the car has just passed 100k miles and always been garage kept. Please don’t gamble with your car and change those lines asap because they are made of biodegradable plastic…
Youre absolutely right, ive replaced quite a few water pipes and have seen many fail. Im definitely going to replace these in the coming weeks.
Thanks for the comment and your experience!
My BMW had a bad head gasket leak, I just dumped a $20 bottle of K seal in and it's been fine for about a month now. I mean I wouldn't take it on any long trips but it's been fine so far for driving around town 🤷♂️
I just replaced both of my belts and my idler Pulley is missig (it wasn,t installed) is that bad or ist that normal i have a M54b22
Definitely interesting! never seen one without an idler... might be worth looking into
@Jan Sadrijaj That's quite normal for a UK/EU spec model. Not all of them came with an Idler pulley. Not too sure on the reason behind it.
interesting!
Hello there. You should avoid filming EPA/CARB regulation gray areas before the EPA/CARB goes after you.
hopefully they wont! everything is on my property
Are you in Georgia? I wish you could work on my e39. I have so many parts I need to install. Currently I’m waiting on an alternator to arrive. I guess I rather watch ppl work on their cars instead of actually working on mine sometimes lol 😂
Im in Northern CA, wish i was closer, maybe you can tackle it yourself after some videos!
thanks for the comment
Headgasket, Oilsump gasket, Camshaft gasket, ODMA/Oil separator, steering rack sealant, all the ball joints in the control arm, inner & outer tie rods, ok the Lower control arms were good but how about anti roll bar bushings, engine mounts, wheel bushings too not to talk of the entire rear suspension bushings. Bleeding the brakes and rebuilding its pistons. Fuel filter, fuel pump, injector service, complete coolant flush, spark plugs & coils. I'm not a mechanic but, don't ask me about making my own video but, I don't have to be a drug dealer to know what drugs look like. There is no difference between a drug dealer and a junkie they both know their drugs very well. Trust me, I know BMW, it's the only car I've ever owned. This was great for RUclips content but, this is a shallow fix as it gets, I wouldn't attempt fixing this car if I wasn't going to do it properly. Sorry but, you can buy a $3 BMW but their initial cost is not what makes them money pit, it's the maintenance and cheaping out that gives the brand the bad name it has. It's really not a poor man's car.
This is just one of many videos I have on this car, I’ve done lots of other repairs but money is the issue, don’t have all the funds available to fix everything so far.
Thanks for the comment :)
