    In todays episode we are repairing this 17 year old 2006 BMW X3 with a M54 engine and a 5 speed GM transmission.
    We are fixing the hemorrhaging oil leak at the dipstick tube O ring, doing a fresh oil service, resealing the oil filter housing with a new gasket and vanos oil line, servicing the transmission with all new fluid, filter, additive, and selector shaft seal. Were also replacing both belts and two of the pulleys, replacing the thermostat and the expansion tank, with the transmission thermostat too. We are flushing the power steering system with a new bottle, and replacing the mass air flow sensor. Shes also getting a full engine clean and degrease.
    Hunter is pumped on his new ride and so am I!

      @@DayOffDIY I actually thought that was pretty smooth, the voiceover with music to cover the lost audio segment. turned out very professional - you kept the tunes at a nice background level for the narration, which was on point. also, that music would not be out of place in a home depot or autozone commercial, so it definitely fits the DIY theme. I still prefer the 'live' audio on your videos, but definitely don't be afraid to do more of this to include more segments where the audio might not be up to par.

    Fantastic job on this x3. Got a lot of the common M54 repairs done. Love these engines too - modern enough to feel ok in traffic and the highway and still relatively easy to work on.
    Just picked up my second $500 non-running 325i. Had it running the next day. Still need to bring it in the garage and give it a good look over. Unfortunately has a pretty bad whiskey-lick in the rear quarter. But likely will make someone a good cheap beater that still has cold ac and every thing seems to work.

I changed all the spark plugs and the #5 coil but code came back again. Any ideas ? Also I wasn’t able to get the #4 spark plug out either it came out 4 -5 turns then gets hung up. I don’t want to force it so still in there. I appreciate any help or advice you could share. Thanks again for the great content. I subscribed 👍

    • @DayOffDIY

      Could be the fuel injector, for misfires I swap plugs and coils, mark where I moved them to, clear codes, drive til it misfires and check to see if it follows. You can do the same thing for injectors. For the plug id spray some lubricant in there and keep working it back and forth until it finally frees up, that’s the best thing you can hope for I think

    Very nice video and work done Alec! I figured that a SUV would have more space under the hood, but it looks as tight as a normal 3-series.
    When removing hoses of the cooling system, is that coolant dripping over all components actually harmful? Do you need to place some bucket or something under the car to catch it?

    • @DayOffDIY
      @DayOffDIY  Год назад +1

      Thank you Edgar! yeah if anything the X3s and X5s are less roomy to work on because of the higher fenders so its a bit less comfortable. as far as the coolant goes, i always rinse the engine off with water or pressure wash it, so never had an issue

      Hi Ella! Great question! the sil glyde works really well but is a bit sticky almost by itself. ive found that using both just makes the O rings extra slippery and allows less of a chance of rolling an O ring. How would you “rectify” excessive oil burning on these M54s? About a quart every 900mi is what mine does.

    • @DayOffDIY
      @DayOffDIY  Год назад

      Depends on where it’s coming from. First thing I’d do is check to see if the breather is working properly or if there is excess vacuum in the engine, see if the oil cap is difficult to remove with the engine running. If it’s not that, could be piston rings or cylinder head, I’d decide to rebuild the engine or not

    • @ivos.1494
      @ivos.1494 Год назад +1

      @@DayOffDIY I’ve changed the PCV system before, hoping it would improve on the oil burning situation. That didn’t help! Obviously I’ve had tons of oil leaks when I first bought it, I’ve replaced all old gaskets/seals/o-rings. Only small one left coming from the oil pan, but there is no way I’m dropping the subframe and bunch of other parts just to get to the oil pan. Looked in the piston cylinders with the camera, and of course they are wet with oil. Tried treating the bottom end with Liqui Moly engine flush few times, still burning excessive amount of oil.

    • @DayOffDIY
      @DayOffDIY  Год назад

      @@ivos.1494 sounds like it either needs piston rings or the cylinder head gone through. have you tried running a thicker viscosity of engine oil? or a supplement?

    When I turn the steering wheel on my E46 the revs go down quite a lot, down to around 500 rpm till the "car" is able to rev them up... I'm guessing ICV, what do you think?

    • @DayOffDIY
      @DayOffDIY  Год назад +1

      sometimes the extra stress of the pressure in the power steering system can bog down the engine at idle. i dont know if its severe enough to actaully be caused by something. might be normal. when im pulling out my E46 today ill turn it to max lock and see where the RPMs end up.

    • @basesperanca
      @basesperanca Год назад

      @@DayOffDIY it's bad enough that the car will stall when I'm parking if I don't rev it up, also the idle is sometimes unstable... if it's not the ICV, I'm thinking maybe a bad PS pump... or both...
