This was one of Peter Gabriel's 1st socially conscious songs. Every band has a 1st album that begins their "classic" period. Some say it was Foxtrot. Some say it was Trespass or Nursery Cryme. You decide. But Foxtrot I consider their 1st "perfect" album!
Exactly right my friend. Foxtrot Selling England and the Lamb are 1 2 and 3 for me. Suppers ready takes Foxtrot beyond Masterpiece. I'm 56 now and I only discovered these albums like 3 years ago 😆👍
@@bhdctnsame here. I’m 52 and have been a music lover my whole life but genesis has always been a “back burner band” I never got around to until right now. This is fantastic and I regret that I could have known this for the last 35 years. @@kenmusicman7061 In my opinion they overtook Yes with the Wind and Wuthering album. Yes' material from 1974(Relayer, Going for the One, etc) was terrible.
What I love about this is the lyric. So many people remark - usually in a derogatory fashion - that Genesis lyrics are fantasy or 'airy-fairy' fiction. This is one of the grittiest social commentaries you could find (and way ahead of its time). And you just know that if the Tories could find a way to do it, they WOULD restrict humanoid height to squeeze more people in the same building site.
Wow, if you find this the best. This is a political delirium by Gabriel. We can turn things round and say if Labourists could, they'd squeeze us by paying taxes or even worse they'd deliver ration cards to avoid "exhausting the planet's resources" as he still says. In Cuba or Venezuela know very well. The kind of nonsense, you guys often say, those who demonize the others. Resources "keep exhausting" for decades but finally they don't 🤔. Talking about intelligent issues, this song is a masterpiece, very complex to play, full of different passages etc.
@@EloyGijon67 My comments are related to the political environment in the UK. Our current government aids cynical schemes to push money to the already rich, such as the VIP lane for PPE contracts during the pandemic. Yes, Peter's lyric is an exaggeration and while this one won't come true, many other past schemes that have seemed exaggerations have actually been enacted here. The sharp political comedy "The Thick Of It" by Armando Iannucci, included many tongue-in-cheek outlandish policies, yet Iannucci has stated that the Tory government has actually put some into their own policies. Hence my own rather tongue-in-cheek (with an element of truth) comment.
The UK is a lost cause. It's in the grip of far left ideology (cultural Marxism) and on its "planned" way to fulfil the neo communist great reset agenda. Doesn't matter which party dominates, it won't make a difference. Bottom up the youth is being brainwashed through "social-emotional learning" and prepared to be state dependent conformists for the communist cause while companies are being forced to be ESG conforming in the upcoming "stakeholder" capitalist system. This top down approach will allow the state to control the populace through corporations and a semi social credit score. Dissenters will be punished through loss of access much like it is happening to public figures that aren't towing the line already. Brave new world, literally. Essentially, the UN and WEF want to turn Europe and the Anglo-American countries into a neo-communist utopia and use the mass surveillance and credit score system of China as a blueprint. What they did during the pandemic was just a taste of what's to come. In the future K. Schwab and his ilk will be spoken of like we speak of A. Hitler, Stalin and Mao. The same calibre of depraved, truly evil people with delusions grandeur that lead people into very dark times.

Get 'em out by Friday
You don't get paid
Till the last one's well on his way
Get 'em out by Friday
It's important that we keep to schedule
There 's be no delay
I represent a firm of gentlemen
Who recently purchased this house
And all the others in the road
In the interest of humanity
We've found a better place for you
To go, go, oh, go, oh
Oh no, this I can't believe
Oh Mary, they're asking us to leave
Get 'em out by Friday
I've told you before
It's good many gone if we let them stay
And if it isn't easy
You can squeeze a little grease
And our troubles will soon run away
After all this time, they ask us to leave
And I told them we could pay double the rent
I don't know why it seems so funny
Seeing as how they'd take more money
The winkler called again, he came here this morning
With four hundred pounds and a photograph of the place
He has found a block of flats with central heating
I think we're going to find it hard
Now we've got them
I've always said that cash
Cash, cash can do anything well
Work can be rewarding
When a flash of intuition
Is a gift that helps you excel, sell, sell, sell
Here we are in Harlow New Town
Did you recognize your block
Across the square, over there?
Sadly since last time we spoke
We've found we've had to raise
The rent again, just a bit
Oh no, this I can't believe
Oh Mary , how we' ve agreed to leave..

In the interest of humanity, they've been told they must go
Told they must go, go, go, go
I think I've fixed a new deal, a dozen properties
