Hi Des, you have blocked all air circulation by putting those top and bottom horizontal lats in. If you use horizontals, they must be counterbattened to allow free air flow. You have just made it pointless battening the cladding off the breather membrane and may aswell have cladded straight onto the osb. Definitely dont put bottom and top horizontals in. Only verticals. Unless you're counter battening for vertical cladding of course
Hi there. In theory you are absolutely right. In practice, however, this is not the case at all and I must respectfully disagree. Have you ever looked at featheredged boards close up when fixed like this? It is a fact that they bend and warp slightly and do not form a tight fit against one another. Thus, there is plenty of opportunity for air to enter and leave and flow around the structure. Timber expands and contracts and sometimes the gaps will be smaller - sometimes slightly bigger. Knots also fall out and leave holes as well as adding character. Also, if there isn't some sort of barrier top and bottom then the areas in between will simply become infested with all sorts of critters. I am, of course, not sn expert by any stretch, but I did consider the very points you have made. May I also thank you for your valuable feedback. Best wishes, Des
@@21stcenturycaveman33 Technically the OP is correct, leaving the horizontals open or fitting a mesh edge allows airflow and prevents any water ingress from sitting at the bottom. Having said that its classed as a demountable structure so does not need to adhere to building regs. You should be good. Just browsing YT this morning and found your project interesting as I'm currently building my own garden office/man cave. Look forward to watching the series through, good job
Im really enjoying this mini series. Thanks for the uploads. May i ask what happen to the house you was renovating? I think the last video i saw was you plastering the kitchen ceiling.
Hi there and thanks for watching. That project is taking a back seat at the moment. Haven't been there in @ 3 months as I'm sick of the sight of it to be honest. Will pick up again in the New Year when I've got other priorities out of the way. Thanks very much for your support. Des
Ive just done what youve done by accident. I put a length of batten accross the bottom. Wont this prevent any water ingress past the cladding to just sit there instead of using vertical battens only Des?
That's a really good question and I understand why you're asking. However, if your timber is treated and properly maintained I wouldn't have thought it would become that saturated tbh. You would, of course, also need to ensure that there's an adequate overhang to avoid creepage of moisture back up to the battens. Also, if you chose to fix just vertical battens and no horizontal ones can you imagine how many creatures would take up residence in their new home? It would become absolutely infested in no time at all with anything that crawls, flys or slithers. Put the horizontals in Squats lol. Best wishes, Des
@@kyearsenal1232 Absolutely not true. There are loads of small gaps where the edges of the boards overlap and the timbers also expand and contract. Plenty of air circulation. Absolutely NOT a problem at all. ATB, Des
Putting the feather boards directly against the membrane is and has been done, but the gap allows air to get behind the boards allowing even drying tho, there should be gap top and bottom to allow a chimney effect behind the boards I don’t know why he put the horizontal batons top and bottom as the stops any air from entering behind the cladding.
Give u credit you are very through with what you are doing. And good videos. But instead of spending needless money on certain things for the shed. I’m a joiner for work. U could of upgraded your tools and saved a lot of money. But very good watch and time taken
Hi there. I'm not sure what you mean by 'spending needless money on certain things for the shed' . Every thing I used and bought was exactly what I needed. Please explain. Stay safe and well. Des
Another excellent entry to this series Des. Again, I love that you upload the full process. Can’t wait to see your future projects!
Thanks Marcus. Appreciate your kind words and support. Des

Great job!
I really like the cladding a lot, another bonus is it leaves a air gap which is a good thing for any building.
Thanks very much for your support. I like this type of cladding for the rustic 'cabin' style look. ATB, Des
is all coming together nicely.
Thanks very much. Slowly but surely ....
Nice one des, i can see a sneak peek as to the finished product feather edge cladding is very strong and durable.
;?) The cladding should hold up great my friend. Have a good week where you are. Des
2:26 holy shit that is a lot of felting nails around the perimeter of your roof haha.
their is a lot more work to building a shed than you would think at the start of the job.
That much is true G. There's me thinking I could knock this one out in a few weekends. ATB, Des

What a fantastic job! You are a chippy now! What size is it? I'm thinking 12 x 8 feet?
Correct. Thanks for your support. The next one I build will be bigger. I quickly ran out of space. Best wishes, Des
Looking good des! What are you planning to use the shed for? Summer house? Workshop? Ect...
Hi there and thanks for watching. It will be used to store tools, for working on projects and vlogs, etc. ATB, Des
Bet you can't wait to get inside and start fitting it out. Was that a copper based preservative you used?
Hi Ade. Hoping to get it sorted for Christmas my friend. ATB, Des
Im presuming its creocote.
Hi what size buttons did you use to nail the cladding to?
2 x 1" mate treated timber. ATB, Des

@@21stcenturycaveman33 The air can not circulate because of the bottom battens

hi , thanks for your videos. do you need planning premition for this , thanks
I've already covered this in the first episodes. Thanks, Des
can you explain the purpose of the battens ? wouldnt it be possible to put the feather boards directly to the membrane ?

Plse see cpmments section for explanation. Thanks, Des
Plse see answer in comments section below. Des
Is there any reason you didn't tape the joins in the breather membrane?
Not necessary mate. ATB, Des
where do you live?
Manchester area.
