This is such a great topic! When you mentioned the look and smell, the first thing I thought was how different Target smells from Walmart.
I've always felt disappointed by the lack of ambiance in the Black Beauty Supply Store (BBSS) but I couldn't quite articulate what I was feeling because I never put much thought into it but, you explained it so well!
I laughed when you said "the Care part" when referring to self-care being a low priority. Healthcare is such a fundamental component of beauty yet it's neglected in BBSS culture.
Also when I compare Ulta to a BBSS, I realized there's a difference in openness in the interior design. The 3 Ulta's I go to in my city have many windows. So the atmosphere is bright and sunny. The shelves are displayed diagonally near the entrance to create a more open and inviting space. You almost feel like you're walking down a runaway or red carpet.
Most BBSS lack of natural sunlight, the shelves tend to be cramped together or just arranged like a warehouse.
And in certain neighborhoods there's security guards at the door and plexiglass separating the cashiers.
It's giving "hurry up and buy" and get out. Not inviting at all 😂
I could go on but I just wanted to let you know you've touched on something I've never seen discussed before. This video was so needed and is greatly appreciated. 👏🏽💐💕

Exactly girl! I've been feeling this way for a while but now, since we have the Exotical community, I have the words. As an Exotical and a mixed- Black woman I want better for all of us (mixed and UBW). Some of the sentiments UBW hold about their beauty needs to change for this dynamic to also change. So happy this resonated with you

Yes! How we feel when shopping matters. When the products are in a closed off cramped space with barriers everywhere, I leave the store. I love open spaces and natural light with friendly staff. I’ll pay the extra the higher end stores charge to feel like a valued customer. Most of shopping is how the customer is made to feel.

BW do not own these stores. These stores, just like most nail shops, are owned by Asians. All of what you say is true but this is the ambiance Asians created. Not sure what black women have to do with the ambiance of beauty supply stores. It’s giving “blame them for everything”.

So I live in Japan and I haven’t been back to a beauty supply store in over 5 years- but I used to live in NYC and I distinctly remember the…not good vibes of going to a beauty supply store. Even when the asian owned ones employed other black women over by the hair counters, I got awful customer service. I’ve been to one beauty supply store in Tokyo to get some braiding hair and it was such a happy and sweet environment. Listening to this reminded me of how just going to the BBS could give me anxiety! Wow! This is such a good conversation.

It’s okay to switch up your look, but take care of your own hair, skin and nails underneath the enhancements. I can pull off a wig of various styles and color, makeup, etc but when I take it all off, my skin is clear from my skincare routine, my hair is long with edges in tact, because my hair is long and healthy.

Beauty Supply stores are literally dirty. You can see dust and out-dated products left and right. And many of the items they carry (lipgloss and makeup) are dollar store quality right next to cheap jewlery.

I guess they are only used to catering to a certain type of woman.

I’m glad you’re talking about this. It’s a real problem. It’s important to look at the reasons why women buy beauty enhancers. If it’s coming from self-hatred, that’s a huge issue. I recently purchased a curly ponytail with bangs. It looks cute on me and it matches my actual hair. It’s even a style I’ve worn before naturally. These stores are capitalizing off women’s insecurities.

Exactly 5:34 ! Last week I needed to restock on some hair products at my local beauty supply store. Just for the heck of it, I asked the owners ( who’s Korean btw) if they had Afro textured hair extensions ( for future styles). he told me no and proceeded to try to sell me something 3x looser than my hair texture ( which is 4 type btw). I shouldn’t have been shocked at this but I was lol. Unfortunately the black community did this to themselves, they put everyone else beauty on a pedestal but leave our own beauty outside smh. Its sad. I still rock with beauty supply stores, I just know that if I ever want to enhance my Afro, I’m not gonna find it at the beauty supply store 🤷🏽‍♀️.

I hope these Asian bss go out of business, they are profiting off of bw insecurities for way too long. They don’t sell type 4 hair because they sell their own Asian hair and that’s a completely different texture. It may take more processing and therefore money to make their Asian hair into a type 4 texture. They need for bw to not want their own texture because otherwise they cannot profit.

You are completely right about how our culture buys products to cover up our beauty. I will say however, that even if you as a black woman love your phenotype, we aren’t always able to work around folks that accept our hair. Getting correct quality hair care for our own hair isn’t always available. Think of celebrities who must wear wigs because stylists on movie and tv sets don’t do black hair right. I live in a very white rural area and actually love just being in the beauty supply cause it’s the only place I feel like I not an outsider and can hear something besides country.

I think of the beauty supply store as a total mindf*ck! Especially their abundance in impoverished neighborhoods owned by people look nothing like the customers who patronize them. How else can you treat your customer base like criminals and have a careless store presentation unless you knew they had no where else to shop or knew they felt that way about themselves. You hit the nail on the head of toxic products being sold (often overpriced) and sometimes counterfeits of the hair care brands they are supposed to represent. There is also historical precedent to play into the insecurities of Black people by selling them the products to look “desirable” or opposite of their phenotype. I live in a majority black city (from the highest elected officials to the custodians) and you can feel the difference in energy of the beauty supply stores in the lower SES neighborhoods to the more affluent ones. We had a black owned shop open recently and the experience is a breath of fresh air, I’m sure in part because those owners may have had their own negative experiences. I’m all for every woman embracing their natural beauty (no harm in trying new looks 😉) and spending their hard earned money where they are respected!

Historically there were zero hair products for “mixed” hair or curly hair. Black women were relaxing/straightening or Jerry Curling their hair in the past and had a slew of products designed for their styles. So mixed women like (Mixed Chicks) started making many of the known natural higher end hair care products that many black and mixed women and men love.
