In the US basically to keep children out of factories during the 1800s. From around that time they realize the youth have to be taught along with to give jobs to adults who are not getting paid due to cheap child labor.
You're a legal adult at 18, a social and financial adult at 21, and a biological adult at 25. The reason the age of majority is 18 (in most cases) is because the legal line has to be drawn somewhere. You can't just view maturity on a case-by-case basis all the time, and that's why it exists. Many people have this strange notion in their head that, when you turn 18 you instantly metamorphosize into a competent, mature individual who knows how to consider their decisions, or that at 18 you're fully mature because "the law says so", and I think that's beyond absurd.

I know it sounds a little out there, but why can't we have some sort of test to determine if a person can legally be considered an adult (like a driving test for adulthood)? The test can ask them questions on some fundamental Constitutional laws, how the American government works, rights and responsibilities, and whatever else they need to know about becoming a legally-recognised adult. If they pass the test, they are now an adult! I realise that there may be some problems with actually implementing this (e.g. possibility of cheating); but if we already think the risks are manageable enough to do it with driving, why not also do it with adulthood?
Saeed Baig That might seem like a good idea in a way, but at the same time you have to consider the fact that not everyone who is already a legal adult will be declared that they are a MATURE adult, simply because of a test. At the same time that there’s the notion of participating in a labor force of sorts, getting a college education, or any other sort of responsibility, there’s also the fact that many adults have habits and hobbies that don’t necessarily define them as being a fully responsible and mature person.

It always bugged me that it's either 18 or 21. Why those? 18 is still technically a teenager, and 21 is just kinda random. 20 feels right to me, not for any ethical reason, jsut because it's the start of your third decade alive, and you are no longer a teen.

Driving should be 18 and the rest 20. @@pyeltd.5457 Yeah I kept the driving age at 16 because I feel like it is a useful thing for teens to learn how to do before they graduate from high school, so then when they graduate they'll have done it enough that they can comfortably drive themselves to places if they move away from their parents after that for college and/or a job. Like you said in America it is much more necessary particularly if you're from a more rural area or a small town like I am. Maybe it's not as needed in bigger cities where there are more alternative transportation options.
In my opinion, adulthood is a mentality not a number. When you have been exposed to lifes hardships and responsibilities and can handle them, that to me is an adult. Unfortunately There are many people much older than 18 years of age that I would still consider to be a child and not an adult. Short answer: 18 was a number pulled from a hat when we started running out of soldiers for vietnam and needed to lower the draft age, the new drafted 18 year olds then protested for the right to vote because they want a say in the political process that could send them to war. and it just stayed that way.

In the Netherlands you can do all these things at 18 but you can ride at 17 but you do need to ride next to someone that has a minimum of 5 year riding experience until you’re 18

Yeah but they need to update it soon because when I was there ( Seattle) pretty much every teen would have a house party with unbelievable drinking and then still drive to and from, because they can't go to a bar and or a club. When I went to America a few weeks before turning 21, I could not drink when in Britain I was drinking since 18, so I felt that your county hold me back or I was 3 years younger again. Tho I had my first drunk night at 13.

I'm 17, and I would say that I'm a adult and teenager at the same time, I'm very responsible, like I can go to places on my own, ask strangers for directions, help people out and buy my own stuff but I can also be very immature and sensitive sometimes.
Adult means you are responsible financially for your own wellbeing. Going to places and asking for directions are things many age ranges do. Adult also means that if you make a legal mistake you are fully responsible and could be sentenced with in the parameters of the law. That said, adult is a very loosely defined concept and in my opinion an archaic idea that doesn't really fit humans. I do think there is a difference from a mental standpoint of a 18 year old vs 25, mainly because the brain stops going through the unmitigated chaos that happens when hormone fluxes occur. In the Millennial and Zoomer generations, I've seen more and more people say that they don't feel adult, regardless of adult age and that the concept was a relic from the 1950's and doesn't really exist in the way people think it does. People aren't more mature unless they actually learn lessons from life and become more well rounded. I've met plenty of teens or even prepubescent persons who are much more mature than people in their 40's and 50's. I think generational divides also caused this. I remember growing up thinking that adults have it together, they don't. Lastly I think the truly defining factor for most people is if you have kids of your own, which makes sense because that's the evolutionary drive and we think of adults as having kids not of kids having kids. Since there are a lot of Millennials and Zoomers who don't have kids, this magical "adultness" doesn't get reached as it has in the past 70 years.
Um, I am fairly sure that process only begins at your decomposition. While that may sound like a joke, and to some extent, it is, what I mean is that in your dying age you seek to return to your glory days, and that you will attempt to return to being a child until you perish.

I was born in 1952, and in a sense I got "cheated"--when I was 18, the age of majority was 21, but by the time I reached 21, the age of majority had been changed to 18. When I reached 21, an uncle sent me a birthday card, and when my grandmother saw it she said "Oh, you should save this one" and I said "Why? The age of majority is 18, so 21 is no big deal."

I can officially confirm that you don’t get treated like a adult when you're 18 lol the only difference is that you're seen as a teenager with more responsibilities, more benefits and you get charged more money with certain things, nothing really changed for me, my family still tell me what to do and still look at me the same as when I was 17 or even younger. Actually being an adult, and being a "legal adult" are two different subjective things. Being 18 doesn't make you a fully grown and developed adult, you are a teenager/young adult.
I don’t understand why we’re considered an adult at 18, but can’t buy alcohol or gamble in a casino until we’re 21. Other parts of the world have the drinking and gambling age at 18. A side note about the gambling age: the casino near me cards (asks for photo ID) anyone who looks like they could be under 21 at the door. But when I entered casinos in Atlantic City, I wasn’t carded at all, except when one of my friends ordered an alcoholic beverage for himself and all three of us got carded. Also, the Dave and Busters in my area will deny entry to anyone under 21 unless they have a parent or guardian over 21 with them, which is weird because, even though Dave and Busters has a bar in their restaurant, they also have family-friendly activities such as bowling, laser tag, and an arcade which are all separate and far from the bar. The bar also takes up only about 15% of the facility. Don’t think you can circumvent the “nobody under 21 policy” because, just like the casino I mentioned earlier, they card at the door. So if you’re under 21 and not with a parent or guardian over 21, you’re better off going to a place like Brunswick Zone.
Honestly I think 18 being the legal adult age is if you commit a crime they can try you in court as an adult. You should know by 18 that what you were going to do was wrong. We are no way adults at 18. In fact the age to vote used to be 21 but it was lowered after the government start sending highschoolers to the Vietnam war despite not by able to vote in support or against the war.

I was 13 when I opened my first bank account. Things used to be different. Age of consent and age of marriage are different. In Finland one can have sex at 16 but one has to be 18 to get married without a special permission from the state. 18 has been the threshold in things like military age for centuries.

Life is weird like that. When I was 16 I wanted out of my parents house and be my own man. Legally I was not allowed to do anything 😤 I joined the military the second I graduated High School. Adults made the 18 law, because they do want their "baby" to leave.

You're a legal adult at 18, a social and financial adult at 21, and a biological adult at 25. The reason the age of majority is 18 (in most cases) is because the legal line has to be drawn somewhere. You can't just view maturity on a case-by-case basis all the time, and that's why it exists. Many people have this strange notion in their head that, when you turn 18 you instantly metamorphosize into a competent, mature individual who knows how to consider their decisions, or that at 18 you're fully mature because "the law says so", and I think that's beyond absurd.

Why not though? I know it sounds a little out there, but why can't we have some sort of test to determine if a person can legally be considered an adult (like a driving test for adulthood)? The test can ask them questions on some fundamental Constitutional laws, how the American government works, rights and responsibilities, and whatever else they need to know about becoming a legally-recognised adult. If they pass the test, they are now an adult!
I realise that there may be some problems with actually implementing this (e.g. possibility of cheating); but if we already think the risks are manageable enough to do it with driving, why not also do it with adulthood?

At the same time that there’s the notion of participating in a labor force of sorts, getting a college education, or any other sort of responsibility, there’s also the fact that many adults have habits and hobbies that don’t necessarily define them as being a fully responsible and mature person.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people can sincerely believe 18 as adulthood has a basis in biology. It always bugged me that it's either 18 or 21. Why those? 18 is still technically a teenager, and 21 is just kinda random. 20 feels right to me, not for any ethical reason, jsut because it's the start of your third decade alive, and you are no longer a teen.

@@pyeltd.5457 Yeah I kept the driving age at 16 because I feel like it is a useful thing for teens to learn how to do before they graduate from high school, so then when they graduate they'll have done it enough that they can comfortably drive themselves to places if they move away from their parents after that for college and/or a job. Like you said in America it is much more necessary particularly if you're from a more rural area or a small town like I am. Maybe it's not as needed in bigger cities where there are more alternative transportation options.

In my opinion, adulthood is a mentality not a number. When you have been exposed to lifes hardships and responsibilities and can handle them, that to me is an adult. Unfortunately There are many people much older than 18 years of age that I would still consider to be a child and not an adult. Adult means you are responsible financially for your own wellbeing. Going to places and asking for directions are things many age ranges do.
Adult also means that if you make a legal mistake you are fully responsible and could be sentenced with in the parameters of the law.
That said, adult is a very loosely defined concept and in my opinion an archaic idea that doesn't really fit humans. I do think there is a difference from a mental standpoint of a 18 year old vs 25, mainly because the brain stops going through the unmitigated chaos that happens when hormone fluxes occur.
In the Millennial and Zoomer generations, I've seen more and more people say that they don't feel adult, regardless of adult age and that the concept was a relic from the 1950's and doesn't really exist in the way people think it does.
People aren't more mature unless they actually learn lessons from life and become more well rounded. I've met plenty of teens or even prepubescent persons who are much more mature than people in their 40's and 50's. I think generational divides also caused this.
I remember growing up thinking that adults have it together, they don't.
Lastly I think the truly defining factor for most people is if you have kids of your own, which makes sense because that's the evolutionary drive and we think of adults as having kids not of kids having kids. Since there are a lot of Millennials and Zoomers who don't have kids, this magical "adultness" doesn't get reached as it has in the past 70 years.

I was born in 1952, and in a sense I got "cheated"--when I was 18, the age of majority was 21, but by the time I reached 21, the age of majority had been changed to 18.
When I reached 21, an uncle sent me a birthday card, and when my grandmother saw it she said "Oh, you should save this one" and I said "Why? The age of majority is 18, so 21 is no big deal."

I can officially confirm that you don’t get treated like a adult when you're 18 lol the only difference is that you're seen as a teenager with more responsibilities, more benefits and you get charged more money with certain things, nothing really changed for me, my family still tell me what to do and still look at me the same as when I was 17 or even younger. It's even better when you don't look your age and my mum even still does my hair. I'm coming up to being 19 now and I think its going to be the same.

I grew up in a rural area on a farm. I felt more mature than many 5 years my senior. While I certainly understand needing to have some type of legal "line in the sand", it is life's experiences that shape a person.
There's something to be said for living near a farm, it humbles a young person in a way that a city doesn't.
Actually being an adult, and being a "legal adult" are two different subjective things. Being 18 doesn't make you a fully grown and developed adult, you are a teenager/young adult.

I don’t understand why we’re considered an adult at 18, but can’t buy alcohol or gamble in a casino until we’re 21. Other parts of the world have the drinking and gambling age at 18.
A side note about the gambling age: the casino near me cards (asks for photo ID) anyone who looks like they could be under 21 at the door. But when I entered casinos in Atlantic City, I wasn’t carded at all, except when one of my friends ordered an alcoholic beverage for himself and all three of us got carded.
Also, the Dave and Busters in my area will deny entry to anyone under 21 unless they have a parent or guardian over 21 with them, which is weird because, even though Dave and Busters has a bar in their restaurant, they also have family-friendly activities such as bowling, laser tag, and an arcade which are all separate and far from the bar. The bar also takes up only about 15% of the facility. Don’t think you can circumvent the “nobody under 21 policy” because, just like the casino I mentioned earlier, they card at the door. So if you’re under 21 and not with a parent or guardian over 21, you’re better off going to a place like Brunswick Zone.

Honestly I think 18 being the legal adult age is if you commit a crime they can try you in court as an adult. You should know by 18 that what you were going to do was wrong. We are no way adults at 18. In fact the age to vote used to be 21 but it was lowered after the government start sending highschoolers to the Vietnam war despite not by able to vote in support or against the war.

Is in the Roman Empire most men in the Roman Legions would enlist at age 17 or 18 and in Roman society it was a mans duty to do military service. As a result after the Roman Empire fell in 476 AD the idea of 17 or 18 being the age of adulthood continued

its common for most countries to have the age of majority set to 18 but some countries adult ages could possibly be 16 21 or even younger depending on laws to be an adult in certain countries

I was 13 when I opened my first bank account. Things used to be different. Age of consent and age of marriage are different. In Finland one can have sex at 16 but one has to be 18 to get married without a special permission from the state. 18 has been the threshold in things like military age for centuries.

Life is weird like that. When I was 16 I wanted out of my parents house and be my own man. Legally I was not allowed to do anything 😤 I joined the military the second I graduated High School. Adults made the 18 law, because they do want their "baby" to leave.

But I've heard parents allow their children at 12 to have a glass of wine at the very least moderately.
