If you’ve ever studied film or advertising, you’ll know that colors are not just randomly chosen. There’s a good reason why many personal care products come in white packaging, and that’s because white symbolizes purity and cleanliness. If we want to denote that something is natural, we might use the colors green or brown. Things that are mysterious or wicked might be painted black, while sensuality will almost always come in red. If we are trying to make a scene look happy, we’ll use bright colors such as yellow or orange, and if we want something to exude femininity, we might think about using the color pink. While different cultures give different meanings to some colors, the meanings also cross cultures at times. Today we’ll look at mostly one color, in this episode of the Infographics Show, Why Is Blue A Boys Color.

In my mother language, the words for pink and roses are the same. I always thought that pink for girls had to do with the fact that roses are pink, and flowers were a symbol of delicacy in a lot of cultures.

According to Smithsonian, the shift toward pink and blue happened gradually. For centuries, all children had worn practical white dresses, which could easily be pulled up to change diapers, and bleached when said diapers inevitably exploded. Pastel baby clothes were introduced in the mid-19th century, but according to University of Maryland historian Jo B. Paoletti, author of Pink and Blue: Telling the Girls From the Boys in America, the colors weren't gender-specific at first.
Ladies' Home Journal article in June 1918 said, "The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the girls. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger color, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl." Other sources said blue was flattering for blonds, pink for brunettes; or blue was for blue-eyed babies, pink for brown-eyed babies, according to Paoletti.
In 1927, Time magazine printed a chart showing sex-appropriate colors for girls and boys according to leading U.S. stores. In Boston, Filene's told parents to dress boys in pink. So did Best & Co. in New York City, Halle's in Cleveland and Marshall Field in Chicago.

I used to love purple and then I got pregnant and fell in love with the colour pink 🙈
At home we only follow the colour "rules" to a huge bare minimum. Once my kids are old enough to decide what they prefer for themselves, I'll respect that. I'd also let my toddler (a boy) wear more pink, especially since he has a slight fondness for that colour, but at least where I'm from, pink for boys is usually only sold around Spring/Easter time. 😑 I wish it was more yearly available.

in kindergarten i always found it weird that there were only 2 “girl” colors, pink and purple and there were like 16 “boy” colors.

It’s dye was rare so only rich people, generally nobles and royals bought it. Making it become associated with royalty. Also it seems to be the price of the dye (back in those times) that flags don’t have purple. I love the color (colour) though.

I like green because it's the color of life and acceptance.
I dress my boys in pink when it's a special occasion. My girls wear blue all the time. We only have a finite number of colors we can see and wear so why limit that as it is? Besides, color as we know it doesn't even exist.

I live in the Philippines, and most of the male children in the island pick randomly in favor of clothing color, and lots choose pink as well. Indeed, my cousin, who is twenty-four, prefers pink to others because he says it makes him look magnetic and bright. But in urban Philippines, the color dictation is more defined and males rarely don pink at all for awareness of norms.

On the pink versus blue debate, I am blind, so color doesn’t mean much to me, but whenever I was young at one point I asked what each color represented, and it was all described to me, I chose blue because of how it was described, and I have more appreciation now thanks to this video for what it indicates as well. So thank you. I have a crafting set an a game called alter Aeon, based on varying shades of blue, and my weapon of choice was a blue steel Claymore, I have a blue steel shovel which I use for mining. The blue steel isn’t as cool as it sounds, it’s more grayish color? Which isn’t that cool to me, but it’s Blue? Or as close as I can get with a shovel. I have Scalera shields downstairs that were crystal blue. They were my very first Scalera shields. They match the color of my mothers eyes. My final set is my original eyecolor and that of Hazel. The Scalera shields look like a actual eye when you remove them, but they actually fit on over the eyeball itself? I hope I have described this well.
