Toyota Safety Features: Can I lock my Smart Key inside my Car?

- Welcome to Belleville Toyota!
Today we are answering the question: "So, can I accidentally lock my smart key inside my car?".
In this video, I will demonstrate a few different scenarios for you that involve locking the smart key in the vehicle. Please note that this feature is specifically for smart keys and therefore is not applicable to all Toyota vehicles.
As long as your smart key's battery is not depleted and you are not in battery saving mode, your vehicle will not allow you to lock the smart key inside the cabin. This is a great feature for those who are getting used to the smart key system or who prefer to keep the smart key in the cupholder while driving than in their pocket or purse.
Love the smart key system and looking for an upgrade? Call our sales team at Belleville Toyota (613-968-4538) to book an appointment or test drive.

Today I put my 3 year old nephew in the car seat of my 2013 Toyota
Avalon after we had finished shopping. I threw my purse in the front seat with the key fob in my purse. I shut the door and everything locked!
I immediately called 911 from the store because my phone was also in the car. The firemen came within 6 minutes and used a slim Jim to open the drivers door.
The fireman took my 3 year old nephew out of the backseat baby seat and he was already drenched in sweat and whimpering.
I don’t know why my car would lock immediately like that but I’m going to find out.
Thank God for the wonderful firemen response team in my town.
Thank you for posting this! This video was a big help for me this morning when I accidentally hit the lock button and didn’t close the door all the way with the car on. I thought I was locked out and called a locksmith which is an hour away from me but saw this and as soon as I closed the door all the way it unlocked 🙏❤️ edited to include I have the car in video so it worked for me
We're glad to hear that our video saved your day! Have a wonderful weekend!
@@belletoyota thank you! You as well
I have a 2018 rav4 xle. Twice it has locked the keys in the car. My purse with the key in it was on the front passenger seat. I now always make sure to leave the window down some so I can reach in and unlock it.
Just got locked out too. Forgot my keys inside the 2018 Toyota Camry xse and closed the drivers side. It automatically locked when I tried to open drivers side. And I just changed the battery on the FOB. Idk this is the 2nd time.
So this just happened to me and I was locked out 😭. We have a 2017 Highlander.
Excellent.
more helpful thanks
My 2013 Toyota Camry XLE Hybrid autolocks with walking away WITH my key fob in the cup holder (for a fact, I'm waiting on AAA as I write this). It will also auto lock with me in the car if I haven't started the car quick enough and if I touch anything (door, brake pedal) it'll set off the panic alarm. And it will pop the trunk with the key fob button but simultaneously set off the panic alarm because it doesn't disarm the security system. I can't find ANY help online or in the manual (just bought it last month) on how to remedy these backwards settings...
I actually locked both my keys in my car 2022 RAV4 last night.
My 2021 Toyota let me lock the key in the trunk today. When i tried to start the car it said key not detected. Good thing i wasn’t trying to lock the door because it appears it would have let me. 😮
Is there a way to lock a 2018 Toyota Tundra with the spare key fob with the truck running?
William you can but not using the lock button. With the vehicle running you would need to lock doors from the inside. Then manually unlock the driver’s door from inside the car, exit the vehicle and use the key that pops out of your fob to lock the door manually. This will lock the driver’s door while the vehicle is running.
Well I'm currently sitting outside my vehicle while the key fob is in the backseat with a full battery so this was unhelpful
Hmm.
Well our 2009 Highlander Limited USED to work like that. Also would not let you manually lock doors WITHOUT fob present. (Never liked that feature.)
Recently the door lock sensor is about 50/50 whether it senses you (fob) at the driver or passenger doors. Today my wife locked the doors (door lock button) with fob inside and left the vehicle. The doors and hatch all locked and she could not get it to open.
The fob batteries were both replaced only about two weeks ago.
Any thoughts?
If the fob batteries were replaced recently and the vehicle is still not sensing the remote key fobs as strongly as before, it's best to speak to your local Toyota Service department to best advise you on the next steps.
@@belletoyota B/S - your local mechanic can access it for you, via the burglar method, or you could do it by smashing your own driver's window.
Any method works, if you desperately wish to re-enter (and have the cash to replace broken windows), although I would ring a local locksmith 1st to let them "have a go".
@greghudson1489
When you get back in and grab the keyfobs, I'd suggest you re-replace their batteries and CORRECTLY follow the re-verification method, explained to you in your vehicle's owners manual (or grab one from online) - to ensure that they are "mated" correctly, with your vehicle's onboard CPU.
That way, their signal codes between fobs and vehicle, will be correctly set so that the sensor recognises them.
I presume (possibly correctly or incorrectly) that when you replaced the batteries, you thought that was all you needed to do, when in fact - the "newly" re-livened fobs need to be re-verified to the vehicle each and every time you "replace" (take out an old one, for a few seconds, before replacing that with a new one, thereby killing the fob along with it's verifications to the vehicle) ...
I would also hazard a guess, that you are lucky they work 50% of the time - as they should default completely, to no recognition, requiring the use of the emergency metal key, to gain entry into the vehicle, to then be able to have a mechanic handy, with his laptop, to re-verify the fobs to the car the OEM electronic way).
Hi. Question.i have 2021 platinum highlander. I've had my car beep when I was getting everyone out but somehow my key ended up inside car. Thankfully it wouldn't lock. My husband is very forgetful, and when tired he leaves everything anywhere. It was in kids carseat cup holder. It took us a minute to locate it. Sigh.
However, my question is about when we are in car and lock the door, can intruder tough the door handle and unlock the door when fob is inside with us?
Example, camping and I put my kids inside with 1 responsible teen or me when traveling. I always worry that someone can walk up and unlock it by touch because fob is nearby. Is it possible?
A person(s) with the key inside the vehicle can certainly lock the vehicle by ensuring all the doors are closed, and by manually pressing the lock button on either the driver or front passenger door panel.
The doors does not unlock unless the unlock button is pressed on the inside, or the key fob unlock button is pressed, or is near the outside of the door and the door handle outside is opened.
My 2021 Camry will lock the key in the car. I do not have the push button start.
You can accidentally lock your smart key "inside" your car, overriding this safety feature. My wife had placed her purse with the smart key inside, had placed both her laptop and purse, back of our Rav4. Guess what, we found out this safety feature only works if your fob is near the driver seat.
Same thing happened to me recently while my keys on the passenger seat. I think what you’re saying is probably true or as she was saying, my key fob battery might have been depleted.
Hi Danny! This is interesting as it will only lock itself in if the smart key's battery is depleting or if you use the second smart key to manually lock the original key inside the vehicle. The key fob needs to be somewhere in the vehicle, not only near the driver seat. This leads me to believe that your battery is depleting as the sensors for the smart key are typically near the steering wheel. I will make a video shortly showing how the feature should work.
@@dimuthhettiarachchi6056 Exactly Dimuth! If the battery is depleting, the sensors will not reach as far (sensors located at front of vehicle). I will make another video demonstrating how the system should work shortly. Thank you so much for commenting!
Interesting…. I just loaded my keys into the boot along with my groceries. I’m now sitting in the hot Pilbara sun whilst waiting for my sister in law to bring me the spare set.
Me to I was able to lock my car with the smart key inside. My other ley was at home and luckily it was my new car and I had à 1 year free subscription with the toyota app.
I wanna know if I locked my Toyota rav4 and then someone come to try to break the windows did the alarm going to scream out?
A Toyota rav4 2020 XLE AWD
What if you forget the car unlocked and walk away with the key. Does the car lock itself for safety reasons as well?
At this time no Toyota vehicle locks on it's own when walking away. However, there is an auto relock timer you can set up, learn about it here: ruclips.net/video/xFpnQ4l29ns/видео.html
Can you show us how to lock the doors while idling so we don't get car jacked?
Would you be more specific in regards to what you mean locking while idling? Because with newer vehicles, that is equipped with smart start keys, the doors are kept locked while the engine is started remotely, until you open the doors when you're getting in the vehicle. Also, would you be able to let us know which year and model you have?
Today, my 2014 Toyota Avensis locked my key inside the car! I put my jacket with my phone and keys on the passenger seat, closed the door, walked around the car and it just locked right in front of me. I will never leave the key inside the car anymore.
Susanna I am sorry to hear this. Unfortunately I am not familiar with that model as it is not sold in Canada so cannot offer any assistance on this.
This just happened to me tonight with my Prius. Same exact scenario.
This just happened with me this morning, same cenário. Toyota venza
This video is very inspiring but not true. My wife’s 2021 Highlander has locked it’s keys inside three times so far. All auto locks and her phone isn’t allowed to unlock it anymore 😅 A little embarrassing for her when I get to use my remote start on my 2011 truck while her fancy-schmancy app takes a password authentication, load up screen, and maybe… start up IF the connection to the car doesn’t drop, 20 ft away
My corolla 2022 it locked the other day I forgot the key in the car it made the noise but i was in a rush that I left when I returned car was locked thanks God i have a second key
It may be a sign to check and replace the key fob battery if it hasn't been recently.
I got a toyota wigo G.
Its a bnew one , like 1 mo.
Accidentaly left the key outside, and it somehow locked it self
Unfortunately we are not familiar with that Toyota as it is not available here in Ontario, Canada. It is best to speak to your local Toyota dealer for questions regarding options, settings and features on your vehicle.
I have a 2017 Highlander and forgot my key inside and it definitely lock itself with the key in it. It also happened to my sister and she has a rav4.
Hi Doris. Sorry to hear this. The smart keys should not be able to be locked inside unless the smart key's battery is depleting or if you use the second smart key to manually lock the original key inside the vehicle. I have yet to try this out on your particular model. I am wondering if the sensors have improved since 2017. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
@@belletoyota in my case the battery is not depleted and I did not have another key to lock it. It was quite a stressfull experience. I had small children (including an infant!) with me. The smart key was on the front passegner seat.
What about if you open the trunk before you get out, lock the doors with the smart/touch lock, then rest the key down in the trunk and forget the it inside the trunk after you have finished ?
As long as the key fob battery is not depleted, and the type of key is for the push button start, the car will not lock with the key inside the vehicle, front or trunk. We have a one shot video showing this which we will be putting up soon. Stay tuned.
Thank you for this question again, this video takes you through exactly that scenario. Enjoy! ruclips.net/video/ugB7QyN4zaw/видео.htmlsi=P5W8ENG_I6tfmGSi
MY DOG locked the door with key inside on a 2024rav4, i had window open so i was able to stretch my arm and unlock it, my prius never had this happen it would not lock with key inside
My chr lock this morning I did all this but can't open 😢
Depending on when the last time your car key battery was changed, this may be the reason why the car locked with the key inside. If you do not have a spare key, it's best to contact a local and professional lock smith to open your vehicle for you, or contact your local Toyota Service department.
My 2011 RAV4 has a little cubby on the dash to the left of the steering wheel. It even looks like it is made to hold the "smart" key fab, because it wouldn't hold much else. Unfortunately, if I leave the key in that cubby, it works to lock me out when using the outside handle button. Found this out the hard way.
Many people use that for spare change storage for parking meters, etc as yes, it is a rather small storage spot.
Our 2022 Toyota Highlander just locked itself with the keys inside. So, wish this video was true.
Same. My sienna has now locked the keys in the car by itself twice! 😭 one being right now and i cant get ut unlocked😭
How about when your key FOB accidentally locked in the trunk?
If your key fob locks anywhere in the vehicle, this may mean you need to replace the key fob battery as it may be depleting and can not send a strong signal to the engine computer to detect that it is inside the vehicle. You will need your spare key to open the vehicle if your depleted key fob is locked inside the vehicle.
This is a yes or no question. Start with the answer.
Well, it did locked inside the car
Plss I have Toyota chr 2018 I can open the two back doors when am inside the car
but I can open it outside
.
@@Centralace7 thanks, I could not - had to call police
You just don’t experience enough abt cars, in fact the car works the other way around, it will lock your smart key inside.
This is not true. Locked my key fob in with just hitting the lock button on my way out of the car. Had to call a locksmith to help me “break in”.
If your key fob locks anywhere in the vehicle, this may mean the key fob battery needs to be replaced, as it may be depleting and can not send a strong signal to the engine computer to detect that the key fob is inside the vehicle. Toyota recommends the key fob battery be replaced every 2-3 years.
Eww. Ok so what if I need to leave my car running with the keys inside because I'm using the car to jump another vehicle or to power something and I need to secure the vehicle so somebody doesn't hop in and drive away with it while I'm working on the other vehicle? Normally that is very easy to do with 2 keys for the same vehicles but this seems like it's impossible and I don't think I would consider buying a car with this kind of feature. At some point, you make something some ridiculously complex, just so stupid people can't do stupid things, like lock their keys in the car and you create big problems for normal people that can't do simple things without the system getting in their way and fighting the owner. So they will refuse to buy it. There are situations where you NEED TO LOCK THE KEY IN THE CAR, WITH THE CAR RUNNING FOR GOOD REASONS!
Can’t agree more. One time there was a junkie trying to get into my car while I was waiting for my husband. As soon as I noticed him walking towards me I immediately use the lock button next to the driver seat, unfortunately it only lock the back seat doors from inside but not the front seats. So this junkie tried to force open my door while I was holding it closed, he then went to the other side of the door and I had to do the same. Imagine there were two of them then I would be totally helpless.
This is wrong and shouldn't be posted. It's absolutely incorrect information and a complete lie.
