Do you need to keep holding it down when pushing the car ? I know you need to hold the button to shift into Neutral but once shifting into N do you need someone to continue holding it down or be hands free and push down again when ready to shift back into Park?
Hi Damian! Awesome question. You are correct that the button needs to be held down to shift to Neutral. Once the vehicle is in Neutral, you do not need to hold the button down. Of course, best practice would be to have a second person in the vehicle to apply brakes while you are pushing, but if you are alone and can move the vehicle off the road, you can do so once the vehicle has been shifted to Neutral. Hi Angela! Thanks for your comment. The Toyota Starlet is a vehicle that is not sold in Canada, so I am hoping the instructions I am giving will still work on yours! Press SETUP (or settings) then VEHICLE then DOOR LOCK SETTINGS. In this menu, you can set the doors to lock/unlock automatically, set the relock timer, adjust the feedback tones, etc. I sincerely hope this works!
If the vehicle is running, you should be able to change the shifter from park without needing to press the shift lock release. If you are having issues with the shifter while the vehicle is running, it's best to have your local Toyota service department look at your vehicle.

Hi Savad! This is working normally. Typically, you are able to shift from D to N without pressing the brake pedal, which is why you do not need to activate the shift lock release in this case. The release is used to shift into Neutral in cases where you would not be able to operate the gear shift (ie. if the vehicle has a dead battery and cannot be turned on). Most people would use this feature to shift to Neutral so they can push the car into a safe spot off the road! Hope this helps :)

I was concerned something was wrong, because I thought I needed to press the release shift release button to shift into all gears. I checked when I got home and was in the garage with the car running, and found I need to push the shift release to go from Park to Reverse, but *not* from Reverse to Neutral, and *not* from Neutral to Drive, or from Drive back to Neutral. If I am understanding correctly, this is all normal. If I am missing anything, please advise. Thank you for your time (and for the video).

The shift lock always engages every time the vehicle is put into park and turned off to ensure the shift gear can't get accidentally shifted/moved causing the vehicle to roll/move. If a vehicle does not get driven or turned on for a while, the battery will drain, and if the vehicle can't be turned on the car will not disengage the shift lock. The only way to release the shift lock if the vehicle can't be turned on is to either boost your battery, or if that's not possible to follow along the video showing how to release the shift lock manually.

Yes same in my Toyota RAV4 2010. It is a push button, no screwdriver necessary. Same function.
